We measured the central ($1/2\leftrightarrow -1/2$) and first satellite ($\pm3/2\leftrightarrow \pm1/2$) lines of the \la\ NMR spectra as a function of temperature in LaAgSb$_2$, in order to elucidate the origin and nature of the charge-density-wave (CDW) transitions at $T_\text{CDW1}=207$ K and $T_\text{CDW2}=186$ K. In the normal state, the Knight shift K reveals a fairly linear relationship with decreasing temperature, which is ascribed to a pseudogap in the spin excitation spectrum, pointing towards the material being an unconventional metal. Upon further cooling, K decreases more steeply below $T_\text{CDW1}$, indicative of the partial Fermi surface gap opening on top of the pseudogap. The most remarkable finding in our study is a clear splitting of the satellite lines at $T_\text{CDW1}$ observed for $H\parallel c$, whose temperature dependence behaves as the BCS order parameter in the weak-coupling limit, evidencing that the CDW transition induces the periodic lattice distortion. Our NMR findings therefore demonstrate that the CDW transition in LaAgSb$_2$ is of Peierls type, being driven by the electronic instability in the vicinity of the Fermi level.

We report on thermodynamic, magnetization, and muon spin relaxation measurements of the strong spin-orbit coupled iridate Ba$_3$IrTi$_2$O$_9$, which constitutes a new frustration motif made up a mixture of edge- and corner-sharing triangles. In spite of strong antiferromagnetic exchange interaction of the order of 100~K, we find no hint for long-range magnetic order down to 23 mK. The magnetic specific heat data unveil the $T$-linear and -squared dependences at low temperatures below 1~K. At the respective temperatures, the zero-field muon spin relaxation features a persistent spin dynamics, indicative of unconventional low-energy excitations. A comparison to the $4d$ isostructural compound Ba$_3$RuTi$_2$O$_9$ suggests that a concerted interplay of compass-like magnetic interactions and frustrated geometry promotes a dynamically fluctuating state in a triangle-based iridate.

The temperature dependence of the 139La NMR spectra in all the structural phases (HTT -> LTO -> LTT) reveals the non-vanishing tilt angle of the CuO6 octahedra in the HTT phase, opposed to the case of La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4} where the tilt angle disappears immediately above the transition. Since 139La relaxation data provide evidence of the thermodynamic critical fluctuations associated with the structural phase transitions, HTT -> LTO and LTO -> LTT, we conclude that the structural transitions in Eu-doped La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4} should be of the order-disorder type rather than of the displacive type observed in La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4}. The change of the nature of the structural transitions caused by do** Eu appears to be consistent with the LTO -> LTT transition that is absent in La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4}.

$^{51}$V NMR studies on CaV2O4 single crystals and $^{17}$O NMR studies on $^{17}$O-enriched powder samples are reported. The temperature dependences of the $^{17}$O NMR line width and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate give strong evidence for a long-range antiferromagnetic transition at Tn = 78 K in the powder. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show that Tn = 69 K in the crystals. A zero-field $^{51}$V NMR signal was observed at low temperatures (f $\approx$ 237 MHz at 4.2 K) in the crystals. The field swept spectra with the field in different directions suggest the presence of two antiferromagnetic substructures. Each substructure is collinear, with the easy axes of the two substructures separated by an angle of 19(1) degree, and with their average direction pointing approximately along the b-axis of the crystal structure. The two spin substructures contain equal number of spins. The temperature dependence of the ordered moment, measured up to 45 K, shows the presence of an energy gap Eg in the antiferromagnetic spin wave excitation spectrum. Antiferromagnetic spin wave theory suggests that Eg lies between 64 and 98 K.

Abstract:
Electronic structures of Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O have been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Co 3d states are found to lie near the top of the O $2p$ valence band, with a peak around $\sim 3$ eV binding energy. The Co $2p$ XAS spectrum provides evidence that the Co ions in Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O are in the divalent Co$^{2+}$ ($d^7$) states under the tetrahedral symmetry. Our finding indicates that the properly substituted Co ions for Zn sites will not produce the diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor property.

$^{11}$B NMR measurements have been performed in $^{11}$B enriched MgB$_2$ powder samples in external fields of 0.813, 1.55, 4.7 and 7.2 T both in the normal phase and in the superconducting phase. A previously unreported dipolar Pake doublet has been observed in the quadrupole perturbed NMR spectrum. The Knight shift can thus be accurately determined by narrowing the line with the Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) technique. Results of Knight shift ($K$) and relaxation rates ($1/T_1$) for both $^{11}$B and $^{27}$Al nuclei are reported also for AlB$_2$. The comparison of the data in the two compounds shows the dramatic drop of the density of states at the boron site in AlB$_2$ with respect to MgB$_2$. The experimental values for $K$ and $1/T_1$ are in most cases in good agreement with the theoretical values obtained from first principles calculations. The recovery of the nuclear magnetization below $T_c$ in random powder samples is non-exponential due to the anisotropy of the upper critical field. The exponential drop of $1/T_1$ in the superconducting phase observed by Kotegawa et al. is confirmed here but not the coherence peak.

Surprisingly, it simultaneously suppresses the extrapolated zero temperature sub-lattice magnetization. 139La NQR results in lightly Li-doped lanthanum cuprate have demonstrated that these effects are independent of the details of the mobility of the added holes. We propose a model in which doped holes phase separate into charged domain walls that surround ``anti-phase'' domains. These domains are mobile down to ~30 K where they either become pinned to the lattice or evaporate as their constituent holes become pinned to dopant impurities.
