Abstract:
A new theoretical method, referred to as Generalized Langevin Mode Analysis (GLMA), is proposed to analyze the mode of structural fluctuations of a biomolecule in solution. The method combines the two theories in the statistical mechanics, or the Generalized Langevin theory and the RISM/3D-RISM theory, to calculate the second derivative, or the Hessian matrix, of the free energy surface of a biomo…

A new theoretical method, referred to as Generalized Langevin Mode Analysis (GLMA), is proposed to analyze the mode of structural fluctuations of a biomolecule in solution. The method combines the two theories in the statistical mechanics, or the Generalized Langevin theory and the RISM/3D-RISM theory, to calculate the second derivative, or the Hessian matrix, of the free energy surface of a biomolecule in aqueous solution, which consists of the intramolecular interaction among atoms in the biomolecule and the solvation free energy. The method is applied to calculate the wave-number spectrum of an alanine dipeptide in water for which the optical heterodyne-detected Raman-induced spectroscopy (RIKES) spectrum is available to compare with. The theoretical analysis reproduced the main features of the experimental spectrum with respect to the peak positions of the four bands around ~90 cm-1, ~240 cm-1, ~370 cm-1, and 400 cm-1, observed in the experimental spectrum, in spite that the physics involved in the two spectrum was not exactly the same: the experimental spectrum includes the contributions from the dipeptide and the water molecules interacting with the solute, while the theoretical one is just concerned with the solute molecule, influenced by solvation. Two major discrepancies between the theoretical and experimental spectra, one in the band intensity around ~100 cm-1, and the other in the peak positions around ~370 cm-1, are discussed in terms of the fluctuation mode of water molecules interacting with the dipeptide, which is not taken explicitly into account in the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:
Magnetization versus field measurements were performed on single crystals of [(Pc)2TbIII0.02YIII0.98]^TBA+ and [(Pc)2DyIII0.02YIII0.98]^TBA+ (Pc: phthalocyaninato, TBA: tetrabutylammonium) at 0.04 K. The first measurements of magnetization hysteresis loops on diluted single crystal of [(Pc)2Ho]-TBA+ (Pc: phthalocyaninato, TBA: tetrabutylammonium) in the subkelvin temperature range are reported. Characteristic staircase-like structure was observed, indicating the occurrence of the quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM), which is a characteristic feature of SMMs. The quantum process in the n…

The quantum process in the new lanthanide SMMs is due to resonant quantum tunneling between entangled states of the electronic and nuclear spin systems, which is an essentially different mechanism from those of the known transition-metal-cluster SMMs. Evidence of the two-body quantum process was also observed for the first time in lanthanide complex systems.

Quantum nondemolition measurement of a single electron spin in a quantum dot

Abstract:
We propose a scheme for the quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of a single electron spin in a single quantum dot (QD). Analytical expressions are obtained for the optical Faraday effect between a quantum dot exciton and microcavity field. The feasibility of the QND measurement of a single electron spin is discussed for a GaAs/AlAs microcavity with an InAs QD.

The method is used to study the spin dependence of shape variables in the $sd$ and $sdg$ boson models. When realistic sets of parameters are used, both models lead to similar results: axial shape is retained with increasing cranking frequency while fluctuations in the shape variable $γ$ are slightly reduced.

Abstract:
The B(E2:0_1^+ -> 2_1^+) values of the Ba isotopes (Z=56) exhibit a sharp increase in deformation as the neutron numbers approach the mid-shell value of N=66. This behavior is anomalous because the 2_1^+ level energies are very similar to those of the neighboring isotopes. By means of the axially-symmetric deformed Woods-Saxon (WS) hamiltonian plus the BCS method, we investigated the systematics of B(E2) of the Ba isotopes. We showed that 15% of the B(E2) values at N=66 was due to the level crossing, occurring at the deformation with beta being nearly 0.3, between the proton orbits originating from the orbits Omega=1/2^-(h11/2) and 9/2^+(g9/2) at zero deformation. The latter of these two was an intruder orbit originating from below the energy gap at Z=50, rising higher in energy with the deformation and intruding the Z=50-82 shell. These two orbits have the largest magnitude of the quadrupole moment with a different sign among the orbits near and below the Fermi surface. Occupancy and non-occupancy of these orbits by protons thus affect B(E2:0_1^+ -> 2_1^+) significantly.
