A material's electronic topology, which is generally described via its Bloch states and the associated bandstructure, will be enriched by the presence of interactions. In metallic settings, the interactions are usually treated through the concept of quasiparticles. Using the genuinely quantum critical heavy fermion compound CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$, we investigate what happens if no well-defined quasiparticles are present. Surprisingly, we discover a topological semimetal phase that emerges from the material's quantum critical state and exhibits a dome structure as a function of magnetic field and pressure. To understand these results, we study a Weyl-Kondo semimetal model at a Kondo destruction quantum critical point. Indeed, it exhibits features in the spectral function that can define topological crossings beyond the quasiparticle picture. We expect our work to stimulate the search for other emergent topological phases.

Frustration-induced strong quantum fluctuations accompanied by spin-orbit coupling and crystal electric field can give rise to rich and diverse magnetic phenomena associated with unconventional low-energy excitations in rare-earth based quantum magnets. Herein, we present crystal structure, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, muon spin relaxation(muSR), and electron spin resonance (ESR) studies on the polycrystalline samples of Ba6Yb2Ti4O17 in which Yb3+ ions constitute a perfect triangular lattice in ab-plane without detectable anti-site disorder between atomic sites. The Curie-Weiss fit of low-temperature magnetic susceptibility data suggest the spin-orbit entangled Jeff = 1/2 degrees of freedom of Yb3+ spin with weak antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in the Kramers doublet ground state. The zero-field specific heat data reveal the presence of long-range magnetic order at TN = 77 mK which is suppressed in a magnetic field 1 T. The broad maximum in specific heat is attributed to the Schottky anomaly implying the Zeeman splitting of the Kramers doublet ground state. The ESR measurements suggest the presence of anisotropic exchange interaction between the moments of Yb3+ spins and the well separated Kramers doublet state. muSR experiments reveal a fluctuating state of Yb3+ spins in the temperature range 0.1 K-100 K owing to depopulation of crystal electric field levels, which suggests that the Kramers doublets are well separated consistent with thermodynamic and ESR results. In addition to the intraplane nearest-neighbor superexchange interaction, the interplane exchange interaction and anisotropy are expected to stabilize the long-range ordered state in this triangular lattice antiferromagnet.

We present a detailed investigation of the stoichiometric CeRh$_4$Al$_{15}$ single crystal compound using the temperature dependence of the heat capacity [$C_{\text{P}}$($T$)], electrical resistivity [$ρ$($T$)], magnetic susceptibility [$χ$($T$)], and magnetization [$M$($H$)] measurements for a magnetic field ($H$) applied in the basal plane and along the $c$-axis. The low temperature power-law behavior of $C$/$T$ $\propto$ $χ$ $\propto$ $T^{-1+α}$, the isotherm magnetization, $M \sim H^α$ with the exponent $α$ = 0.45 - 0.55, and the $T$-linear resistivity $Δρ$ $\sim$ $T^ε$ with $ε\sim$ 1 are found to be consistent with the formation of quantum Griffiths singularities in the non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) regime. We further investigated the spin dynamics of a polycrystalline sample of CeRh$_4$Al$_{15}$, using zero-field (ZF) and longitudinal-field (LF) muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. ZF-$μ$SR measurements do not reveal any sign of long-range magnetic ordering down to 70~mK. The electronic relaxation rate ($λ$) below 0.5~K increases rapidly and shows a thermal activation-like characteristic [$T$log($λ$)$\sim$ $T$] over the entire measured temperature range between 70~mK to 4~K, indicating the presence of low energy spin fluctuations in CeRh$_4$Al$_{15}$. LF-$μ$SR measurements show a time-field ($t/H^η$) scaling of the $μ$SR asymmetry indicating a quantum critical behavior of this compound. Furthermore, inelastic neutron scattering study on the polycrystalline sample reveals two crystal field excitations near 19 and 33~meV. These features collectively provide strong evidence of NFL behavior in CeRh$_4$Al$_{15}$ due to the formation of Griffiths phase close to a $T$ $\rightarrow$ 0~K quantum critical point.

We present the results of muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and neutron scattering on the Ce-based quasikagome lattice CeRh$_{1-x}$Pd$_{x}$Sn ($x=0.1$ to 0.75). Our ZF-$μ$SR results reveal the absence of static long-range magnetic order down to 0.05~K in $x = 0.1$ single crystals. The weak temperature-dependent plateaus of the dynamic spin fluctuations below 0.2~K in ZF-$μ$SR together with its longitudinal-field (LF) dependence between 0 and 3~kG indicate the presence of dynamic spin fluctuations persisting even at $T$ = 0.05~K without static magnetic order. On the other hand, $C_{\text{4f}}$/$T$ increases as --log $T$ on cooling below 0.9~K, passes through a broad maximum at 0.13~K and slightly decreases on further cooling. The ac-susceptibility also exhibits a frequency independent broad peak at 0.16~K, which is prominent with an applied field $H$ along $c$-direction. We, therefore, argue that such a behavior for $x=0.1$ (namely, a plateau in spin relaxation rate ($λ$) below 0.2~K and a linear $T$ dependence in $C_{\text{4f}}$ below 0.13~K) can be attributed to a metallic spin-liquid (SL) ground state near the quantum critical point in the frustrated Kondo lattice. The LF-$μ$SR study suggests that the out of kagome plane spin fluctuations are responsible for the SL behavior. Low energy inelastic neutron scattering (INS) of $x$ = 0.1 reveals gapless magnetic excitations, which are also supported by the behavior of $C_{\text{4f}}$ proportional to $T^{1.1}$ down to 0.06~K.

We have studied the microscopic magnetic properties, the nature of the 130-K phase transition, and the ground state in the recently synthesized compound Ce$_2$Rh$_2$Ga by use of $^{69,71}$Ga nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR). The NQR spectra clearly show an unusual phase transition at $T_t$ $\sim$ 130 K yielding a splitting of the high-temperature single NQR line into two clearly resolved NQR lines, providing evidence for two crystallographically inequivalent Ga sites. The NQR frequencies are in good agreement with fully-relativistic calculations of the band structure. Our NQR results indicate the absence of magnetic or charge order down to 0.3 K. The temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate, 1/$T_1$, shows three distinct regimes, with onset temperatures at $T_t$ and 2 K. The temperature-independent 1/$T_1$, observed between $T_t$ and 2 K, crosses over to a Korringa process, 1/$T_1$ $\propto$ $T$, below $\sim$ 2 K, which evidences a rare two-ion Kondo scenario: the system goes into a dense Kondo coherent state at 2.0 and 0.8 K for the two different Ga sites.

Quantum fluctuations enhanced by frustration and subtle interplay between competing degrees of freedom offer an ideal ground to realize novel states with fractional quantum numbers in quantum materials that defy standard theoretical paradigms. Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a highly entangled state wherein frustration induced strong quantum fluctuations preclude symmetry breaking phase transitions down to zero temperature without any order parameter. Experimental realizations of QSL in quantum materials with spin dimensionality greater than one is very rare. Here, we present our thermodynamic, nuclear magnetic resonance, muon spin relaxation and inelastic neutron scattering studies of a new rare-earth hyperkagome compound Li3Yb3Te2O12 in which Yb3+ ions constitute a three dimensional spin-lattice without any detectable disorder. Our comprehensive experiments evince neither signature of magnetic ordering nor spin freezing down to 38 mK that suggest the realization of dynamic liquid-like ground state in this antiferromagnet. The ground state of this material is interpreted by a low energy Jeff = 1/2 degrees of freedom with short range spin correlations. The present results demonstrate a viable basis to explore spin-orbit driven enigmatic correlated quantum states in a new class of rare-earth based three dimensional frustrated magnets that may open new avenues in theoretical and experimental search for spin liquids.

We investigate the magnetic and crystal electric field (CEF) states of the Kondo lattice system CeCuGa3 by muon spin relaxation (muSR), neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. A noncentrosymmetric BaNiSn3-type tetragonal crystal structure (space group I4mm) is inferred from x-ray as well as from neutron powder diffraction. The low-temperature magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data show an anomaly near 2.3 - 2.5~K associated with long range magnetic ordering, which is further confirmed by muSR and neutron diffraction data. The neutron powder diffraction collected at 1.7 K shows the presence of magnetic Bragg peaks indexed by an incommensurate magnetic propagation vector k = (0.148, 0.148, 0) and the magnetic structure is best described by a longitudinal spin density wave with ordered moments lying in ab-plane. An analysis of the INS data based on a CEF model reveals the presence of two magnetic excitations near 4.5 meV and 6.9 meV. The magnetic heat capacity data suggest an overall CEF splitting of 20.7 meV, however the excitation between 20 and 30 meV is very broad and weak in our INS data, but could provide an evidence of CEF level in this energy range in agreement with the magnetic entropy. Our analysis of INS data based on the CEF-phonon model indicates that the two excitations at 4.5 meV and 6.9 meV have their origin in CEF-phonon coupling (i.e. splitting of one CEF peak into two peaks, called vibron), with an overall splitting of 28.16 meV, similar to the case of CeCuAl3 and CeAuAl3.

Polycrystalline $\mathrm{Er_2Rh_3Si}$ compound with $\mathrm{Mg_2Ni_3Si}$-type of rhombohedral Laves phases (space group $R\overline{3}m$, hR18) structure was synthesized by arc-melting method. The obtained isothermal magnetic entropy changes ($ΔS_m$), and relative power cooling for a change of magnetic field 0-9 T are 10.1~$\mathrm{J.~kg^{-1}.~K^{-1}}$, and 255 J. kg$^{-1}$ respectively. Arrott plots and also the universal scaling plot by rescaled temperature axis and normalized $ΔS_m$ collapse onto a one curve for independent of magnetic fields, confirming a second-order ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition in $\mathrm{Er_2Rh_3Si}$.

The polycrystalline compound of $\mathrm{Sm_2AgSi_3}$ crystallizes in the $\mathrm{ThSi_2}$-type tetragonal structure (space group ${I_{4_1}/amd}$). The temperature-dependent dc-magnetization and heat capacity results demonstrate that the compound undergoes ferromagnetic behaviour with a Curie temperature ($T_C$) of 14 K. The large coercive field in hysteresis loops and the thermomagnetic irreversibility in the ferromagnetic region revealed that the compound exhibits a large magnetic anisotropy. The magnitude of the applied field and the coercivity obtained from the M-H loops corroborate with the thermomagnetic irreversibility in the magnetization data. The magnetic contribution of the heat capacity reveals a broad Schottky-type anomaly above $T_C$, due to the presence of the crystal electric field effect of $\mathrm{Sm^{3+}}$ in $\mathrm{Sm_2AgSi_3}$.

Collective behaviour of electrons, frustration induced quantum fluctuations and entanglement in quantum materials underlie some of the emergent quantum phenomena with exotic quasi-particle excitations that are highly relevant for technological applications. Herein, we present our thermodynamic and muon spin relaxation measurements, complemented by ab initio density functional theory and exact diagonalization results, on the recently synthesized frustrated antiferromagnet Li4CuTeO6, in which Cu2+ ions (S = 1/2) constitute disordered spin chains and ladders along the crystallographic [101] direction with weak random inter-chain couplings. Our thermodynamic experiments detect neither long-range magnetic ordering nor spin freezing down to 45 mK despite the presence of strong antiferromagnetic interaction between Cu2+ moments leading to a large effective Curie-Weiss temperature of -154 K. Muon spin relaxation results are consistent with thermodynamic results. The temperature and magnetic field scaling of magnetization and specific heat reveal a data collapse pointing towards the presence of random-singlets within a disorder-driven correlated and dynamic ground-state in this frustrated antiferromagnet.

We report the signatures of dynamic spin fluctuations in the layered honeycomb Li$_3$Cu$_2$SbO$_6$ compound, with a 3$d$ S = 1/2 $d^9$ Cu$^{2+}$ configuration, through muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) and neutron scattering studies. Our zero-field (ZF) and longitudinal-field (LF)-$μ$SR results demonstrate the slowing down of the Cu$^{2+}$ spin fluctuations below 4.0 K. The saturation of the ZF relaxation rate at low temperature, together with its weak dependence on the longitudinal field between 0 and 3.2 kG, indicates the presence of dynamic spin fluctuations persisting even at 80 mK without static order. Neutron scattering study reveals the gaped magnetic excitations with three modes at 7.7, 13.5 and 33 meV. Our DFT calculations reveal that the next nearest neighbors (NNN) AFM exchange ($J_{AFM}$ = 31 meV) is stronger than the NN FM exchange ($J_{FM}$ = -21 meV) indicating the importance of the orbital degrees of freedom. Our results suggest that the physics of Li$_3$Cu$_2$SbO$_6$ can be explained by an alternating AFM chain rather than the honeycomb lattice.

The temperature variation dc-magnetization exhibits a ferromagnetic behavior with Curie temperature $T_C$ = 32.5 K. The zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) magnetic curves show a thermomagnetic irreversible behavior below $T_C$. The field dependence of irreversible temperature follows Almeida-Thouless line. CeIrSn with a quasikagome Ce lattice in the hexagonal basal plane is a strongly valence fluctuating compound, as we confirm by hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and inelastic neutron scattering, with a high Kondo temperature of $T_{\mathrm{K}}\sim 480$\,K. We report a negative in-plane thermal expansion $α/T$ below 2\,K, which passes through a broad minimum near 0.75\,K. Volume and $a$-axis magnetostriction for $B \parallel a$ are markedly negative at low fields and change sign before a sharp metamagnetic anomaly at 6\,T. These behaviors are unexpected for Ce-based intermediate valence systems, which should feature positive expansivity. Rather they point towards antiferromagnetic correlations at very low temperatures. This is supported by muon spin relaxation measurements down to 0.1\,K, which provide microscopic evidence for a broad distribution of internal magnetic fields. Comparison with isostructural CeRhSn suggests that these antiferromagnetic correlations emerging at $T\ll T_{\mathrm{K}}$ result from geometrical frustration.

Pr$_3$Ir$_4$Ge$_{13}$ does not show any phase transition down to 1.9 K. Magnetic, and specific measurements show that the system possesses a crystal electric field singlet ground state that is separated from the first excited state by about 37 K. $ρ(T)$ shows a negative temperature coefficient of resistance for the whole temperature range studied and which can be explained in terms of Mott's impurity band conduction mechanism. $R_\mathrm{H}(T)$ measurements show that Pr$_3$Ir$_4$Ge$_{13}$ is a low-carrier density semimetal and its transport properties indicate a metallic-non metallic cross over behaviour. Large Seebeck values were observed for the entire temperature range of investigation, and the analysis of temperature variation of $S$ and $S/T$ showed no sign of strong correlation between the Pr 4$f^2$ and conduction electron states near Fermi level. A large Sommerfeld coefficient, $γ= 150$~mJ/(mol K$^2$) indicates the formation of a moderate heavy-fermion state emerging from the dynamical crystal field fluctuations.

We report on the synthesis and physical properties of the new ternary intermetallic Ce$_2$Rh$_2$Ga. Its formation and dimorphism have been investigated by powder and single crystal X-ray diffractometry, as well as by differential thermal analyses. LT- and HT-Ce$_2$Rh$_2$Ga can be obtained by the chosen respective thermal treatment. The high-temperature form (HT-Ce$_2$Rh$_2$Ga), stable above 864(5)°C, is orthorhombic La2Ni3-type [Cmce, oS20, a=5.851(2) Å, b=9.618 (2) Å, c=7.487 (2) Å, V=421.3(2) Å3]; the low-temperature form (LT-Ce$_2$Rh$_2$Ga), stable below this temperature, is monoclinic Pr2Co2Al- (Ca2Ir2Si-) type [C2/c, mS20, a=10.0903(6) A, b=5.6041(3) A, c=7.8153(4) A, beta=104.995(3) degrees, V=426.88(4) A3]. The magnetic measurements were conducted on two different samples, namely on the LT-Ce$_2$Rh$_2$Ga and the other on the HT-Ce$_2$Rh$_2$Ga sample. The HT-Ce$_2$Rh$_2$Ga compound is found to exhibit a phase transition at 128.5 K. By virtue of the sharp peak anomaly in the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility this phase transition is plausibly of antiferromagnetic origin, but occurs at a remarkably high temperature compared to what is typical for Ce binary and ternary compounds. LT- Ce$_2$Rh$_2$Gaa has a ground state of ferromagnetic nature which sets in at a paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition at 5.2 K.

Reduced dimensionality offers a crucial information in deciding the type of the quantum ground state in heavy fermion materials. Here we have examined stoichiometric CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$ compound, which crystallizes in a quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure with Ga-Ce-Co chains along the $c$-axis. The low-temperature behavior of magnetic susceptibility ($χ\sim-\ln T$), heat capacity ($C_p/T\sim-\ln T$), and resistivity ($ρ\sim T^{n}$) firmly confirm the non-Fermi liquid ground state of CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$. We studied the low-energy spin dynamics of CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$ compound utilizing zero field (ZF-) and longitudinal field (LF-) muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. ZF-$μ$SR measurement reveals the absence of long-range magnetic ordering down to 70 mK, and interestingly below 1 K, the electronic relaxation rate sharply rises, intimating the appearance of low energy quantum spin fluctuations in CeCo$_{2}$Ga$_{8}$.

High-quality single crystals of NaYbSe$_2$, which resembles a perfect triangular-lattice antiferromagnet without the intrinsic disorder, are investigated by magnetization and specific heat, as well as the local probe techniques nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron spin resonance (ESR). The low-field measurements confirm the absence of any spin freezing or long-range magnetic order down to 50~mK, which suggests a quantum spin liquid ground (QSL) state with gapless excitations. The instability of the QSL state is observed upon applying magnetic fields. For the $H\bot c$ direction, a field-induced magnetic phase transition is observed above 2~T from the $C_{\rm p}(T)$ data, agreeing with a clear $\frac{M_s}{3}$ plateau of $M(H)$, which is associated with an up-up-down (uud) spin arrangement. For the $H\|c$ direction, a field-induced transition could be evidenced at a much higher field range (9 - 21~T). The $^{23}$Na NMR measurements provide microscopic evidence for field-induced ordering for both directions. A reentrant behavior of $T_{\rm N}$, originating from the thermal and quantum spin fluctuations, is observed for both directions. The anisotropic exchange interactions $J_{\perp}\simeq$ 4.7~K and $J_z\simeq$2.33~K are extracted from the modified bond-dependent XXZ model for the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet. The absence of magnetic long-range order at zero fields is assigned to the effect of strong bond-frustration, arising from the complex spin-orbit entangled $4f$ ground state. Finally, we derive the highly anisotropic magnetic phase diagram, which is discussed in comparison with the existing theoretical models for spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnets.

Features of low dimensional magnetism resulting from a square-net arrangement of Co atoms in trirutile CoTa$_2$O$_6$ is studied in the present work by means of density functional theory and is compared with the experimental results of specific heat and neutron diffraction. The small total energy differences between the ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) configuration of CoTa$_2$O$_6$ shows that competing magnetic ground states exist, with the possibility of transition from FM to AFM phase at low temperature. Our calculation further suggests the semi-conducting behavior for CoTa$_2$O$_6$ with a band gap of $\sim$0.41 eV. The calculated magnetic anisotropy energy is $\sim$2.5 meV with its easy axis along the [100] (in-plane) direction. Studying the evolution of magnetism in Co$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$Ta$_2$O$_6$ (x = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 1). it is found that the sharp AFM transition exhibited by CoTa$_2$O$_6$ at $T_N$ = 6.2 K in its heat capacity vanishes with Mg-dilution, indicating the obvious effect of weakening the superexchange pathways of Co. The current specific heat study reveals the robust nature of $T_N$ for CoTa$_2$O$_6$ in applied magnetic fields. Clear indication of short-range magnetism is obtained from the magnetic entropy, however, diffuse components are absent in neutron diffraction data. At $T_N$, CoTa$_2$O$_6$ enters a long-range ordered magnetic state which can be described using a propagation vector, (1/4, 1/4, 0). Upon Mg-dilution at $x \geq$0.1, the long-range ordered magnetism is destroyed. The present results should motivate an investigation of magnetic excitations in this low-dimensional anisotropic magnet.

In this structure, the Pr atom fills the void formed by the octahedral Ru$_4$Sn$_6$ units which results in a tetragonal body-centred arrangement. Here we present reports on the physical and magnetic properties of PrRu$_4$Sn$_6$. The temperature dependences of specific heat, $C_p(T)$, electrical resistivity, $ρ(T)$, and magnetic susceptibility, $χ(T)$, reveal the absence of a long-range magnetic ordering down to 2 K. $χ(T)$ follows a Curie-Weiss behaviour above 100 K with an effective magnetic moment, $μ_\mathrm{eff}$ = 3.34 $μ_B$/Pr and paramagnetic Weiss temperature, $θ_p$ = $-$19.47 K indicating a dominant antiferromagnetic interaction. The magnetization at 2 K is quasi-linear in nature and attains a value of 0.86 $μ_B$/Pr at 7 T which is well reduced compared to the calculated value of 3.32 $μ_B$/Pr expected for a free Pr$^{3+}$ ion. This is attributed to possible magneto-crystalline anisotropy in the system. $C_p(T)$ indicates the presence of a optical-phonon mode which is supported by a glass-like thermal conductivity above $\sim$45 K. This observation is associated with caged structured compounds where the low-frequency optical-phonon mode of the guest atom interacts with the host lattice, resulting in the scattering of heat-carrying quasiparticles.

The Pr$^{3+}$ ion has a site symmetry of $C_s$ which predicts a crystal electric field (CEF) level splitting into 9 singlets for $J$ = 4. However, a phase transition at $T_m$ = 1.28~K is observed in electrical resistivity and specific heat results and is reported in this paper. The electrical resistivity shows an upturn below $T_m$ due to the superzone-gap formation. This transition is tuneable in fields and is suppressed to lower temperatures with applied magnetic fields. The electronic specific heat $C_{p}(T)/T$ increases below $T_m$ and reaches a value of 7.37 J/(mol K$^2$) at 0.4~K. The Sommerfeld coefficient, $γ$ extracted from the low temperature analysis of $C_\mathrm{4f}(T)/T$ is 637 mJ/(mol K$^2$) indicating a possible mass enhancement of the quasiparticles. The calculated entropy value of 3.05 J/(mol K) is recovered around $T_m$ exhibiting almost 53% of Rln2, where R is the universal gas constant. Magnetic susceptibility results obeys the Curie-Weiss law for data above 100 K with an estimated effective magnetic moment, $μ_\mathrm{eff}$ = 3.37 $μ_B$/Pr and Weiss temperature, $θ_p$ = $-$124 K.

We have investigated the ground state properties of the orthorhombic structure compound PrRu$_2$Ga$_8$ through electronic and magnetic properties studies. The compound crystallizes in the CaCo$_2$Al$_8$-type structure, belonging to space group $Pbam$ (No. 55). The temperature dependence specific heat shows a $λ$-type anomaly at $T_N$ = 3.3 K, indicating a bulk phase transition probably of antiferromagnetic origin. At the Néel temperature $T_N$, the entropy approaches the value of 4.66~J/mol.K which is about 0.8Rln(2), where R is the universal gas constant. The analysis of the low temperature specific heat gives $γ$ = 46 mJ/mol.K$^2$. The temperature dependence DC magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ confirms the anomaly at 3.3 K and follows the Curie-Weiss law for temperatures above 50~K, with the calculated effective magnetic moment, $μ_\mathrm{eff}$ = 3.47(2)~$μ_B$/Pr and Weiss temperature $θ_p$ = --7.80(1)~K. This effective magnetic moment value is in good agreement with the Hund$^\prime$s rule theoretical free-ion value of 3.58~$μ_B$ for Pr$^{3+}$. The electrical resistivity data also shows an anomaly at $T_N$ and a broad curvature at intermediate temperatures probably due to crystalline electric field (CEF) effects. The Pr$^{3+}$ in this structure type has a site symmetry of $C_s$ which predicts a CEF splitting of the $J$ = 4 multiplet into 9 singlets and thus rule out in principle the occurrence of spontaneous magnetic order. In this article we discuss the magnetic order in PrRu$_2$Ga$_8$ in line with an induced type of magnetism resulting from the admixture of the lowest CEF level with the first excited state.

We have synthesized PrPt$_4$Ag and PrPt$_4$Au compounds for the first time and report their crystal structure, as well as magnetic and physical properties in the temperature range of 1.9~K to 300~K. Both compounds are derived from the substitution of Pt with Ag and Au, respectively in the parent compound PrPt$_5$ which crystallizes in the hexagonal CaCu$_5$-type structure. Here we observed the preservation of the hexagonal CaCu$_5$-type structure under such substitutions, which is in contrast to the observations in PrCu$_4$Ag and PrCu$_4$Au adopting the cubic MgCu$_4$Sn-type structure upon substitution on parent hexagonal PrCu$_5$. The temperature dependences of specific heat $C_p(T)$, and electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$ of PrPt$_4$Ag show an anomaly at 7.6~K. This is absent in the magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, thus suggesting a possible multipolar ordering of the Pr$^{3+}$ moment. PrPt$_4$Au on the other hand does not show any anomaly but an upturn in $C_p(T)/T$ below about 10~K and attains 1.23~J/(mol K$^2$) at 1.9~K. In addition, $ρ(T)$ $\sim T$ for nearly a decade in temperature. These observations for PrPt$_4$Au are the hallmark of a non-Fermi liquid (nFL) behavior and is characteristic of a system near a quantum critical point. The analyses of the low-temperature $C_p(T)$ for PrPt$_4$Ag and PrPt$_4$Au give values of the Sommerfeld coefficient, $γ= 728.5~$mJ/(mol K$^2$) and 509.1~mJ/(mol K$^2$), respectively, indicating a significant enhancement of the quasiparticle mass in the two compounds.

We have examined the superconducting ground state properties of the caged type compound Sc$_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$ using magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin relaxation or rotation ($μ$SR) measurements. Magnetization measurements indicate type-II superconductivity with an upper critical field $μ_0H_{c2}(0)$ = 7.24 T. The zero-field cooled and field cooled susceptibility measurements unveil an onset of diamagnetic signal below $T_{\bf c}$ = 4.4 K. The interpretation of the heat capacity results below $T_{\bf c}$ using the $α-$BCS model unveils the value of $α$ = 2.65, which gives the dimensionless ratio 2$Δ(0)/k_B T_{\bf c}$ = 5.3, intimating that Sc$_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$ is a strong-coupling BCS superconductor. The zero-field $μ$SR measurements in the longitudinal geometry exhibit a signature of a spontaneous appearance of the internal magnetic field below the superconducting transition temperature, indicating that the superconducting state is characterized by the broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS). We have compared the results of broken TRS in Sc$_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$ with that observed in R$_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$ (R = Lu and Y).

The physical properties of the very heavy fermion YbCu$_4$Ni were characterized through structural, magnetic, thermal and transport studies along nearly four decades of temperature ranging between 50 milikelvin and 300 K. At high temperature, the crystal electric field levels splitting was determined with $Δ_1 (Γ_6)= 85$ K and $Δ_2 (Γ_8) \approx 200$ K, the latter being a quartet in this cubic symmetry. An effective magnetic moment $μ_{eff} \approx 3μ_B$ is evaluated for the $Γ_7$ ground state, while at high temperature the value for a Yb$^{3+}$ ion is observed. At low temperature this compounds shows the typical behavior of a magnetically frustrated system undergoing a change of regime at a characteristic temperature $T^*\approx 200$ mK into a sort of Fermi-liquid type 'plateau'of the specific heat: $C_m/T|_{T\to 0}$ = const. The change in the temperature dependence of the specific heat coincides with a maximum and a discontinuity in respective inductive and dissipative components of the ac-susceptibility. More details from the nature of this ground state are revealed by the specific heat behavior under applied magnetic field.

The maximum entropy change ($ΔS_m$) and adiabatic temperature change ($ΔT_{ad}$) for the field value of 7 T were observed to be 13.8 J/kg.K and 6.5 K respectively. We have employed modified Arrott plot (MAP), Kouvel-Fisher (KF) procedures to estimate the critical exponents near the FM-PM phase transition. Critical exponents $β$ = 0.312(2), $γ$ = 1.080(5) are self-consistently estimated from the non-linear fitting. The $β$ value is close to the three dimensional (3D) Ising model where as $γ$ and $δ$ values are close to mean field model. The estimated critical exponents for Gd$_2$Cu$_2$In suggest that the system may belong to different universal class. All the three critical exponent obey Widom scale and collapse the scaled magnetic isotherms into two distinct branches below and above $T_C$ in accordance with single scaling equation. Specific heat measurements show a $λ$ type peak near 94 K confirming the bulk magnetic ordering. The data near $T_C$ was fitted using the non-linear function $C_{P} = B + Cε+ A^{\pm}|ε|^{-α}(1 + E^{\pm} |ε|^{0.5})$ between -0.025$<ε<$0.025 which yielded the fourth critical exponent $α$ value to be 0.11 (3). The value indicates possible 3D-Ising behavior where Gd$^{3+}$ moments arranged uniaxially along long tetragonel axis 'c' as reported in literature.

Complex and correlated quantum systems with promise for new functionality often involve entwined electronic degrees of freedom. In such materials, highly unusual properties emerge and could be the result of electron localization. Here, a cubic heavy fermion metal governed by spins and orbitals is chosen as a model system for this physics. Its properties are found to originate from surprisingly simple low-energy behavior, with two distinct localization transitions driven by a single degree of freedom at a time. This result is unexpected, but we are able to understand it by advancing the notion of sequential destruction of an SU(4) spin-orbital-coupled Kondo entanglement. Our results implicate electron localization as a unified framework for strongly correlated materials and suggest ways to exploit multiple degrees of freedom for quantum engineering.

We present magnetization measurements on Sr4Ru3O10 as a function of temperature and magnetic field applied perpendicular to the magnetic easy $c$-axis inside the ferromagnetic phase. Peculiar metamagnetism evolves in Sr4Ru3O10 below the ferromagnetic transition $T_{C}$ as a double step in the magnetization at two critical fields $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$. We map the $H-T$ phase diagram with special focus on the temperature range 50\,K $\le T \le T_{C}$. We find that the critical field $H_{c1}(T)$ connects the field and temperature axes of the phase diagram, whereas the $H_{c2}$ boundary starts at 2.8\,T for the lowest temperatures and ends in a critical endpoint at (1\,T; 80\,K). We conclude from the temperature dependence of the ratio $\frac{Hc1}{Hc2}(T)$ that the double metamagnetic transition is an intrinisc effect of the material and it is not caused by sample stacking faults such as twinning or partial in-plane rotation between layers.

The intermetallic compound \PFA\ that possesses a three-dimensional network structure of Al polyhedra centered at the transition metal element Fe and the rare earth Pr is investigated through neutron powder diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering in order to elucidate the magnetic ground state of Pr and Fe and the crystal field effects of Pr. Our neutron diffraction study confirms long-range magnetic order of Pr below $T_N $ = 4.5~K in this compound. Subsequent magnetic structure estimation reveals a magnetic propagation vector $k$ = ($\frac{1}{2}$~0~$\frac{1}{2}$) with a magnetic moment value of 2.5~$μ_\mathrm{B}$/Pr along the orthorhombic $c$-axis and evidence the lack of ordering in the Fe sublattice. The inelastic neutron scattering study reveals one crystalline electric field excitation near 19~meV at 5~K in \PFA. The energy-integrated intensity of the 19~meV excitation as a function of |$Q$| $(A^{-1})$ follows the square of the magnetic form factor of Pr$^{3+}$ thereby confirming that the inelastic excitation belongs to the Pr sublattice. The second sum rule applied to the dynamic structure factor indicates only 1.6(2)~$μ_\mathrm{B}$ evolving at the 19~meV peak compared to the 3.58~$μ_\mathrm{B}$ for free Pr$^{3+}$, indicating that the crystal field ground state is magnetic and the missing moment is associated with the resolution limited quasi-elastic line. The magnetic order occurring in Pr in \PFA\ is counter-intuitive to the symmetry-allowed crystal field level scheme, hence, is suggestive of exchange-mediated mechanisms of ordering stemming from the magnetic ground state of the crystal field levels.

We report a detailed study of the magnetization modulus as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field under varying angle in Sr$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$ close to the metamagnetic transition at $H_{c}\backsimeq 2.5\,$T for $H \perp c$. We confirm that the double-feature at $H_{c}$ is robust without further splitting for temperatures below 1.8 K down to 0.48 K. The metamagnetism in Sr$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$ is accompanied by a reduction of the magnetic moment in the plane of rotation and large field-hysteretic behavior. The double anomaly shifts to higher fields by rotating the field from $H\,\perp \,c$ to $H\,\parallel\,c$. We compare our experimental findings with numerical simulations based on spin reorientation models caused by intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy and Zeeman effect. Crystal anisotropy is able to explain a metamagnetic transition in the ferromagnetic ordered system Sr$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$, but a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term is crucial to account for a reduction of the magnetic moment as discovered in the experiments.

The double perovskite Y_2NiMnO_6 displays ferromagnetic transition at Tc = 81 K. The ferromagnetic order at low temperature is confirmed by the saturation value of magnetization (M_s) and also, validated by the refined ordered magnetic moment values extracted from neutron powder diffraction data at 10 K. This way, the dominant Mn4+ and Ni2+ cationic ordering is confirmed. The cation-ordered P 21/n nuclear structure is revealed by neutron powder diffraction studies at 300 and 10 K. Analysis of frequency dependent dielectric constant and equivalent circuit analysis of impedance data takes into account the bulk contribution to total dielectric constant. This reveals an anomaly which coincides with the ferromagnetic transition temperature (T_c). Pyrocurrent measurements register a current flow with onset near Tc and a peak at 57 K that shifts with temperature ramp rate. The extrinsic nature of the observed pyrocurrent is established by employing a special protocol measurement. It is realized that the origin is due to re-orientation of electric dipoles created by the free charge carriers and not by spontaneous electric polarization at variance with recently reported magnetism-driven ferroelectricity in this material

Single crystals of Frank-Kasper compounds RTM$_2$Al$_{20}$ (R = Eu, Gd and La; TM = V and Ti) were grown by self-flux method and their physical properties were investigated through magnetization ($M$), magnetic susceptibility ($χ$), specific heat ($C_P$) and electrical resistivity ($ρ$) measurements. Powder x-ray diffraction studies and structural analysis showed that these compounds crystallize in the cubic crystal structure with the space group $Fd\overline{3}m$. The magnetic susceptibility for the compounds EuTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ and GdTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ showed a sudden jump below the N{é}el temperature $T_N$ indicative of plausible double magnetic transition. Specific heat ($C_P$) and electrical resistivity ($ρ$) measurements also confirm the first-order magnetic transition (FOMT) and possible double magnetic transitions. Temperature variation of heat capacity showed a sharp phase transition and huge $C_P$ value for the (Eu/Gd)Ti$_2$Al$_{20}$ compounds Full width at half-maximum (FWHM) $<$ 0.2 K) which is reminiscent of a first-order phase transition and a unique attribute among RTM$_2$Al$_{20}$ compounds. We observed clear anomaly between heating and cooling cycle in temperature-time relaxation curve for the compounds GdTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ (2.38 $K$) and EuTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ (3.2 $K$) which is indicating a thermal arrest due to the latent heat. The temperature variation of $S_{mag}$ for GdTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ saturates to a value $0.95R\ln8$ while the other magnetic systems exhibited still lower entropy saturation values in the high temperature limit. Resistivity measurements showed that all the samples behave as normal Fermi liquid type compounds and $ρ(T)$ due to electron-phonon scattering follows Bloch-Gr$\ddot{\textrm u}$neisen-Mott relation in the paramagnetic region.

The temperature dependence of exchange bias properties are studied in polycrystalline $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} / \mathrm{Ni_{81}Fe_{19}} $ bilayers, for different $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} $ thicknesses. Using a field cooling protocol, a non-monotonic behavior of the exchange bias field is shown in the exchange-biased bilayers. Another thermal protocol, the Soeya protocol, related to the $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} $ thermal activation energies was carried out and reveals a two-step evolution of the exchange bias field. The results of these two different protocols are similar to the ones obtained for measurements previously reported on epitaxial $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} $, indicating a driving mechanism independent of the long-range crystalline arrangement (i.e., epitaxial or polycrystalline). An intrinsic property of $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} $ is proposed as being the driving mechanism for the thermal dependent magnetization reversal: the canting of the $ \mathrm{BiFeO_3} $ spins leading to a biquadratic contribution to the exchange coupling. The temperature dependence of the magnetization reversal angular behavior agrees with the presence of such a biquadratic contribution for exchange biased bilayers studied here.

We report on magneto-transport properties of the Kondo semiconducting compound CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$, focusing on its exotic phase below $T_0$ = 27 K. In this phase, an excess thermal conductivity $κ$ emerges and is gradually suppressed by magnetic field, strikingly resembling those observed in the hidden-order phase of URu$_2$Si$_2$. Our analysis indicates that low-energy magnetic excitation is the most likely origin, as was also proposed for URu$_2$Si$_2$ recently, despite the largely reduced magnetic moments. Likewise, other transport properties such as resistivity, thermopower and Nernst effect exhibit distinct features characterizing the very different charge dynamics above and below $T_0$, sharing similarities to URu$_2$Si$_2$, too. Given the exotic nature of the ordered phases in both compounds, whether a unified interpretation to all these observations exists appears to be extremely interesting.

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been carried out to determine the crystal field states of the Kondo lattice heavy fermions CeRuSn3 and CeRhSn3. Both the compounds crystallize in LaRuSn3-type cubic structure (space group Pm-3n) in which the Ce atoms occupy two distinct crystallographic sites with cubic (m-3) and tetragonal (-4m.2) point symmetries. The INS data of CeRuSn3 reveal the presence of a broad excitation centered around 6-8 meV which is accounted by a model based on crystal electric field (CEF) excitations. On the other hand, the INS data of isostructural CeRhSn3 reveal three CEF excitations around 7.0, 12.2 and 37.2 meV. The neutron intensity sum rule indicates that the Ce ions at both cubic and tetragonal Ce sites are in Ce3+ state in both CeRuSn3 and CeRhSn3. The CEF level schemes for both the compounds are deduced. We estimate the Kondo temperature T_K = 3.1(2) K for CeRuSn3 from neutron quasielastic linewidth in excellent agreement with that determined from the scaling of magnetoresistance which gives T_K = 3.2(1) K. For CeRhSn3 the neutron quasielastic linewidth gives T_K = 4.6 K. For both CeRuSn3 and CeRhSn3, the ground state of Ce3+ turns out to be a quartet for the cubic site and a doublet for the tetragonal site.

Exchange bias-like effect observed in the intermetallic compound TbFeAl, which displays a magnetic phase transition at $T^h_c \approx$ 198~K and a second one at $T^l_c \approx$ 154~K, is reported. {\em Jump}-like features are observed in the isothermal magnetization, $M (H)$, at 2~K which disappear above 8~K. The field-cooled magnetization isotherms below 10~K show loop-shifts that are reminiscent of exchange bias, also supported by {\em training effect}. Significant coercive field, $H_c \approx$ 1.5~T at 2~K is observed in TbFeAl which, after an initial increase, shows subsequent decrease with temperature. The exchange bias field, $H_{eb}$, shows a slight increase and subsequent leveling off with temperature. It is argued that the inherent crystallographic disorder among Fe and Al and the high magnetocrystalline anisotropy related to Tb$^{3+}$ lead to the exchange bias effect. TbFeAl is recently reported to show magnetocaloric effect and the present discovery of exchange bias makes this compound a multifunctional one. The result obtained on TbFeAl generalizes the observation of exchange bias in crystallographically disordered materials and gives impetus for the search for materials with {\em exchange bias induced by atomic disorder.}

The antiferromagnetic transition is also visible in the thermal transport data, thereby suggesting a close connection between the electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in this Sn-based quasi-skutterudite. The temperature dependence of $ρ(T)$ is analyzed in terms of a power-law for resistivity pertinent to Fermi liquid picture. Giant, positive magnetoresistance (MR) $\approx$ 80$\%$ is observed in Gd$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$ at 2~K with the application of 9~T. The giant MR and the double magnetic transition can be attributed to the quasi-cages and layered antiferromagnetic structure of Gd$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$ vulnerable to structural distortions and/or dipolar or spin-reorientation effects. The giant value of MR observed in this class of 3:4:13 type alloys, especially in a Gd-compound, is the highlight of this work.

Here we report on the effects of pressure as additional tuning parameter. Specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements reveal a converse effect of pressure on the two transitions, leading to the merging of both transitions at 6.2 kbar. The superconducting ground state of the newly discovered superconductor Cs$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ with a quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure ($T_{\bf c}\sim$ 2.1(1) K) has been investigated using magnetization and muon-spin relaxation or rotation ($μ$SR), both zero-field (ZF) and transverse-field (TF), measurements. Our ZF $μ$SR measurements reveal the presence of spin fluctuations below 4 K and the ZF relaxation rate ($λ$) shows enhancement below $T_{\bf c}\sim$ 2.1 K, which might indicate that the superconducting state is unconventional. This observation suggests that the electrons are paired via unconventional channels such as spin fluctuations, as proposed on the basis of theoretical models. Our analysis of the TF $μ$SR results shows that the temperature dependence of the superfluid density is fitted better with a nodal gap structure than an isotropic s-wave model for the superconducting gap. The observation of a nodal gap in Cs$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ is consistent with that observed in the isostructural K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ compound through TF $μ$SR measurements. Furthermore, from our TF $μ$SR study we have estimated the magnetic penetration depth $λ_{\mathrm{L}}$$(0)$ = 954 nm, superconducting carrier density $n_s = 4.98 \times 10^{26}~ $m$^{-3}$, and carrier's effective-mass enhancement $m^*$ = 1.61m$_{e}$.

The average crystal structure of Sm$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ conforms to the cubic space group $Pm\bar{3}n$ however, signatures of subtle structural distortions are obtained from the x ray data. The magnetic susceptibility, $χ(T)$, follows a modified Curie-Weiss law indicating the presence of crystal fields of Sm$^{3+}$ and the significance of van Vleck terms. No sign of ferromagnetism is observed in $M(H)$ of Sm$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ which yields only 0.025~$μ_\mathrm{B}$/f.u.-Sm at 2~K, 7~T. The Sommerfeld coefficient, $γ\approx$ 220~mJ/mol-Sm K$^2$, estimated from the analysis of low temperature specific heat suggests the formation of heavy quasi particles at low temperature. Though a ln$T$ dependence of $ρ(T)$ is observed till 60~K, the resistivity behavior is accounted for by assuming a two-band model for activated behavior of charge carriers. The field scans of resistivity, $ρ(H)$, below $T_N$ display significant nonlinearity while those above the $T_N$ are more metal-like. Low values of thermal conductivity, $κ_T(T)$, are observed in Sm$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ however, displaying an anomaly at $T_N$ which signifies magnetoelastic coupling. A fairly high value of Seebeck coefficient, $S \approx$ 40~$μ$V/K is observed at 300~K. We identify Sm$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ as a low charge carrier density system with unusual field-insensitive heavy fermion features very similar to the filled skutterudites.

The magnetic structures and the magnetic phase transitions in the Mn-doped orthoferrite TbFeO$_3$ studied using neutron powder diffraction are reported. Magnetic phase transitions are identified at $T^\mathrm{Fe/Mn}_N \approx$ 295~K where a paramagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic transition occurs in the Fe/Mn sublattice, $T^\mathrm{Fe/Mn}_{SR} \approx$ 26~K where a spin-reorientation transition occurs in the Fe/Mn sublattice and $T^\mathrm{R}_N \approx$ 2~K where Tb-ordering starts to manifest. At 295~K, the magnetic structure of the Fe/Mn sublattice in TbFe$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.5}$O$_3$ belongs to the irreducible representation $Γ_4$ ($G_xA_yF_z$ or $Pb'n'm$). A mixed-domain structure of ($Γ_1 + Γ_4$) is found at 250~K which remains stable down to the spin re-orientation transition at $T^\mathrm{Fe/Mn}_{SR}\approx$ 26~K. Below 26~K and above 250~K, the majority phase ($> 80\%$) is that of $Γ_4$. Below 10~K the high-temperature phase $Γ_4$ remains stable till 2~K. At 2~K, Tb develops a magnetic moment value of 0.6(2)~$μ_\mathrm{B}/$f.u. and orders long-range in $F_z$ compatible with the $Γ_4$ representation. Our study confirms the magnetic phase transitions reported already in a single crystal of TbFe$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.5}$O$_3$ and, in addition, reveals the presence of mixed magnetic domains. The ratio of these magnetic domains as a function of temperature is estimated from Rietveld refinement of neutron diffraction data. Indications of short-range magnetic correlations are present in the low-$Q$ region of the neutron diffraction patterns at $T < T^\mathrm{Fe/Mn}_{SR}$. These results should motivate further experimental work devoted to measure electric polarization and magnetocapacitance of TbFe$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.5}$O$_3$.

The newly discovered Ising-type ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Al$_2$B exhibits an additional phase transition at $T_\textrm{N}$ = 14.2 K before entering the ferromagnetic ground state at $T_\textrm{C}$ = 12.8 K. We clarify the nature of this transition through high resolution neutron diffraction measurements. The data reveal the presence of a longitudinal incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) in the temperature range of $T_\textrm{C}<T<T_\textrm{N}$. The propagation vector ${\bf q} \sim (0,0,0.148)$ is nearly temperature independent in this region and discontinuously locks into ${\bf q} = 0$ at $T_\textrm{C}$. Mean-field calculations of an effective Ising model indicate that the modulated SDW phase is stabilized by a strong competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. This makes CeRu$_2$Al$_2$B a particularly attractive model system to study the global phase diagram of ferromagnetic heavy-fermion metals under influence of magnetic frustration.

Strong spin-lattice coupling and prominent frustration effects observed in the 50$\%$ Fe-doped frustrated hexagonal ($h$)LuMnO$_3$ are reported. A Néel transition at $T_{\mathrm N} \approx$ 112~K and a possible spin re-orientation transition at $T_{\mathrm {SR}} \approx$ 55~K are observed in the magnetization data. From neutron powder diffraction data, the nuclear structure at and below 300~K was refined in polar $P6_3cm$ space group. While the magnetic structure of LuMnO$_3$ belongs to the $Γ_4$ ($P6'_3c'm$) representation, that of LuFe$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.5}$O$_3$ belongs to $Γ_1$ ($P6_3cm$) which is supported by the strong intensity for the $\mathbf{(100)}$ reflection and also judging by the presence of spin-lattice coupling. The refined atomic positions for Lu and Mn/Fe indicate significant atomic displacements at $T_{\mathrm N}$ and $T_{\mathrm {SR}}$ which confirms strong spin-lattice coupling. Our results complement the discovery of room temperature multiferroicity in thin films of $h$LuFeO$_3$ and would give impetus to study LuFe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$O$_3$ systems as potential multiferroics where electric polarization is linked to giant atomic displacements.

The compound PrFe$_2$Al$_8$ possesses a three-dimensional network structure resulting from the packing of Al polyhedra centered at the transition metal element Fe and the rare earth Pr. Along the $c$-axis, Fe and Pr form {\em chains} which are separated from each other by the Al-network. In this paper, the magnetism and crystalline electric field effects in PrFe$_2$Al$_8$ are investigated through the analysis of magnetization and specific heat data. A magnetic phase transition in the Pr lattice is identified at $T^{Pr}_{N}\approx$ 4~K in dc magnetization and ac susceptibility data. At 2~K, the magnetization isotherm presents a ferromagnetic saturation, however, failing to reach full spin-only ferromagnetic moment of Pr$^{3+}$. Metamagnetic step-like low-field features are present in the magnetization curve at 2~K which is shown to shift upon field-cooling the material. Arrott plots centered around $T^{Pr}_{N}$ display "S"-like features suggestive of an inhomogeneous magnetic state. The magnetic entropy, $S_m$, estimated from specific heat outputs a value of $R$ ln(2) at $T_{N2}$ suggesting a doublet state for Pr$^{3+}$. The magnetic specific heat is modeled by using a 9-level Schottky equation pertinent to the Pr$^{3+}$ ion with $J$ = 4. Given the crystalline electric field situation of Pr$^{3+}$, the inference of a doublet state from specific heat and consequent long-range magnetic order is an unexpected result.

Conventional superconductors are robust diamagnets that expels magnetic fields through the Meissner effect. It would therefore be unexpected if a superconducting ground state would support spontaneous magnetics fields. Such broken time-reversal symmetry states have been suggested for the high$-$temperature superconductors, but their identification remains experimentally controversial. We present magnetization, heat capacity, zero field and transverse field muon spin relaxation experiments on the recently discovered caged type superconductor \yrhsn\ ($T_{\bf c}$ = 3.0 K). The electronic heat capacity of \yrhsn\ shows a $T^3$ dependence below $T_{\bf c}$ indicating an anisotropic superconducting gap with a point node. This result is in sharp contrast to that observed in the isostructural Lu$_5$Rh$_6$Sn$_{18}$ which is a strong coupling $s-$wave superconductor. The temperature dependence of the deduced superfluid density \yrhsn\ is consistent with a BCS $s-$wave gap function, while the zero-field muon spin relaxation measurements strongly evidences unconventional superconductivity through a spontaneous appearance of an internal magnetic field below the superconducting transition temperature, signifying that the superconducting state is categorized by the broken time-reversal symmetry.

The superconducting state of the newly discovered superconductor K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ with a quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure ($T_{\bf c}\sim$ 6 K) has been investigated by using magnetization and muon-spin relaxation or rotation ($μ$SR) measurements. Our analysis of the temperature dependence of the superfluid density obtained from the transverse field (TF) $μ$SR measurements fit very well to an isotropic $s$-wave character for the superconducting gap. Furthermore a similarly good fit can also be obtained using a $d$-wave model with line nodes. Our zero-field $μ$SR measurements do reveal very weak evidence of the spontaneous appearance of an internal magnetic field near the transition temperature, which might indicate that the superconducting state is not conventional. This observation suggests that the electrons are paired via unconventional channels such as spin fluctuations, as proposed on the basis of theoretical models of K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. Furthermore, from our TF $μ$SR study the magnetic penetration depth $λ_L$, superconducting carrier density $n_s$, and effective-mass enhancement $m^*$ have been estimated to be $λ_L(0)$ = 454(4) nm, $n_s$ = 2.4$\times$10$^{27}$ carriers/m$^3$, and $m^*$ = 1.75 $m_e$, respectively.

Orthorhombic single crystals of TbMn0.5Fe0.5O3 are found to exhibit spin-reorientation, magnetization reversal and weak ferromagnetism. Strong anisotropy effects are evident in the temperature dependent magnetization measurements along the three crystallographic axes a, b and c. A broad magnetic transition is visible at T_N (Fe/Mn) = 286 K due to paramagnetic to AxGyCz ordering. A sharp transition is observed at T_SR (Fe/Mn) = 28 K, which is pronounced along c axis in the form of a sharp jump in magnetization where the spins reorient to GxAyFz configuration. The negative magnetization observed below TSR Fe/Mn along c axis is explained in terms of domain wall pinning. A component of weak ferromagnetism is observed in field-scans along c-axis but below 28 K. Field-induced steps-like transitions are observed in hysteresis measurement along b axis below 28 K. It is noted that no sign of Tb-order is discernible down to 2 K. TbMn0.5Fe0.5O3 could be highlighted as a potential candidate to evaluate its magneto-dielectric effects across the magnetic transitions.

The Seebeck effect describes the generation of an electric potential in a conducting solid exposed to a temperature gradient. Besides fundamental relevance in solid state physics, it serves as a key quantity to determine the performance of functional thermoelectric materials. In most cases, it is dominated by an energy-dependent electronic density of states at the Fermi level, in line with the prevalent efforts toward superior thermoelectrics through the engineering of electronic structure. Here, we demonstrate an alternative source for the Seebeck effect based on charge-carrier relaxation: A charge mobility that changes rapidly with temperature can result in a sizeable addition to the Seebeck coefficient. This new Seebeck source is demonstrated explicitly for Ni-doped CoSb3, where a dramatic mobility change occurs due to the crossover between two different charge-relaxation regimes. Our findings unveil the origin of pronounced features in the Seebeck coefficient of many other elusive materials characterized by a significant mobility mismatch. As the physical origin for the latter can vary greatly, our proposal provides a unifying framework for the understanding of a large panoply of thermoelectric phenomena. When utilized appropriately, this effect can also provide a novel route to the design of improved thermoelectric materials for applications in solid-state cooling or power generation.

Spin freezing in the $A$-site spinel FeAl$_2$O$_4$ which is a spin liquid candidate is studied using remnant magnetization and nonlinear magnetic susceptibility and isofield cooling and heating protocols. The remnant magnetization behavior of FeAl$_2$O$_4$ differs significantly from that of a canonical spin glass which is also supported by analysis of the nonlinear magnetic susceptibility term $χ_3 (T)$. Through the power-law analysis of $χ_3 (T)$, a spin-freezing temperature, $T_g$ = 11.4$\pm$0.9~K and critical exponent, $γ$ = 1.48$\pm$0.59 are obtained. Cole-Cole analysis of magnetic susceptibility shows the presence of broad spin relaxation times in FeAl$_2$O$_4$, however, the irreversible dc susceptibility plot discourages an interpretation based on conventional spin glass features. The magnetization measured using the cooling-and-heating-in-unequal-fields protocol brings more insight to the magnetic nature of this frustrated magnet and reveals unconventional glassy behaviour. Combining our results, we arrive at the conclusion that the present sample of FeAl$_2$O$_4$ consists of a majority spin liquid phase with "glassy" regions embedded.
