Abstract: We compute amplitude of deeply virtual Compton scattering in the parton model. We found that the amplitude up to the accuracy O(1/Q) depends on new skewed parton distributions (SPD's). Unitarity and the QCD-improved dipole picture

Abstract: As a consequence of QCD factorization theorems, a wide variety of inclusive and exclusive cross sections may be formulated in terms of a universal colour dipole cross section at small $x$. It is well known that for small transverse size dipoles this cross section is related to the leading-log gluon density. Using the measured pion-proton cross section as a guide, we suggest a reasonable extrapol… ▽ More As a consequence of QCD factorization theorems, a wide variety of inclusive and exclusive cross sections may be formulated in terms of a universal colour dipole cross section at small $x$. It is well known that for small transverse size dipoles this cross section is related to the leading-log gluon density. Using the measured pion-proton cross section as a guide, we suggest a reasonable extrapolation of the dipole cross section to the large transverse size region. We point out that the observed magnitude and small $x$ rise of the gluon density from conventional fits implies that the DGLAP approximation has a restricted region of applicability. We found that `higher twist' or unitarity corrections are required in, or close to, the HERA kinematic region, even for small `perturbative' dipoles for scattering at central impact parameters. This means that the usual perturbative leading twist description, for moderate virtualities, $1 < Q^2 < 10$ GeV$^2$, has rather large `higher twist' corrections at small $x$. In addition, for these virtualities, we also find sizeable contributions from large non-perturbative dipoles ($b \gsim 0.4$ fm) to $F_2$, and also to $F_L$. This also leads to deviations from the standard leading twist DGLAP results, at small $x$ and moderate $Q^2$. Our model also describes the low $Q^2$ data very well without any further tuning. We generalize the Gribov unitarity limit for the structure functions of a hadron target to account for the blackening of the interaction at central impact parameters and to include scattering at peripheral impact parameters which dominate at extremely large energies. △ Less

Hard exclusive electroproduction of decuplet baryons in the large N_c limit

Charmonium Suppression - Interplay of Hadronic and Partonic Degrees of Freedom

Abstract: Last year the E866-group of the Fermilab measured the $x_F$ dependence of $J/Ψ$ and $Ψ'$ suppression in $pA$ collisions. We discuss two of the effects found in that experiment with regard to color coherence effects: the different suppression of the $J/Ψ$ and the $Ψ'$ at $x_F<0$ and the significant suppression of both at large $x_F$. Future Small x Physics with ep and eA Colliders

Abstract: The interaction of spatially small dipoles with nucleons, nuclei is calculated in the DGLAP approximation at the top of HERA energies and found to be close to the $S$-channel unitarity limit in the case of the color octet dipoles. The DGLAP analyses of the current diffractive data appear to support this conclusion as they indicate a $\sim 30-40%$ probability of the gluon induced diffraction for $Q^2\sim 4 $GeV$^2$. The need for the high-precision measurements of the $t$-dependence of inclusive and exclusive diffraction for pinpointing higher twist effects in the gluon sector is emphasized.The $eA$ collisions at HERA would provide a strong amplification of the gluon densities allowing to reach deep into the regime of nonlinear QCD evolution. Connection between the leading twist nuclear shadowing and leading twist diffraction in $ep$ scattering is explained. The presented model independent results for the nuclear shadowing for light nuclei indicate much larger shadowing for the gluon sector than for the sea quark sector.It is argued that HERA in $eA$ mode would be able to discover a number of new phenomena including large gluon shadowing, large nonlinearities in parton evolution, small $x$ color transparency in the vector meson production followed by color opacity at $x\le .005$, large probability of inclusive diffraction. Implications for the nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC are discussed as well. △ Less

Color Coherent Phenomena with Hadron Beams

We point out that the recent advances in calculating cross sections of hard exclusive processes off light nuclei allow to use the lightest nuclei for sensitive tests of CCP. The Transparency of 12C for Protons

Abstract: Existing cross-section data for 1p-shell knockout in the reaction 12C(e,e'p) - as obtained under different kinematic conditions - are shown to be mutually consistent, apart from a recent measurement performed in Mainz. New data have been collected at the Amsterdam Pulse Stretcher that confirm the normalization of the older measurements. An analysis of the world's 12C(e,e'p) data has yielded prec… ▽ More Existing cross-section data for 1p-shell knockout in the reaction 12C(e,e'p) - as obtained under different kinematic conditions - are shown to be mutually consistent, apart from a recent measurement performed in Mainz. New data have been collected at the Amsterdam Pulse Stretcher that confirm the normalization of the older measurements. An analysis of the world's 12C(e,e'p) data has yielded precise values of the spectroscopic factor for 1p-shell and 1s-shell knockout from 12C. These values have been used to evaluate the transparency of the 12C nucleus for 1p-shell and 1s-shell protons separately on the basis of recent high-energy 12C(e,e'p) data taken at a four-momentum transfer squared of 1.1 GeV/c^2. As the resulting average value of the nuclear transparency, 0.81(0.04), is considerably higher than the value obtained from previous analyses and theoretical estimates, the high Q^2 data were used instead for an independent determination of the spectroscopic strength for 1p + 1s knockout. Combining these results with the low Q^2 data the spectroscopic factors appear to be momentum-transfer dependent. Possible explanations of these surprising results in terms of reaction-mechanism effects or a possible breakdown of the quasi-particle concept at high Q^2 are discussed as well. △ Less

Nuclear effects in $g_{1A}(x,Q^2)$ at small $x$ in deep inelastic scattering on $^7$Li and $^3$He

Abstract: We suggest to use polarized nuclear targets of $^7$Li and $^3$He to study nuclear effects in the spin dependent structure functions $g_{1A}(x,Q^2)$. These effects are expected to be enhanced by a factor of two as compared to the unpolarized targets. We predict a significant $x$ dependence at $10^{-4} ÷10^{-3} \leq x \leq 0.2$ of $g_{1A}(x,Q^2)/g_{1N}(x,Q^2)$ due to nuclear shadowing and nuclea… ▽ More We suggest to use polarized nuclear targets of $^7$Li and $^3$He to study nuclear effects in the spin dependent structure functions $g_{1A}(x,Q^2)$. These effects are expected to be enhanced by a factor of two as compared to the unpolarized targets. We predict a significant $x$ dependence at $10^{-4} ÷10^{-3} \leq x \leq 0.2$ of $g_{1A}(x,Q^2)/g_{1N}(x,Q^2)$ due to nuclear shadowing and nuclear enhancement. The effect of nuclear shadowing at $x \approx 10^{-3}$ is of an order of 16% for $g_{1A=7}^{n.s. 3/2}(x,Q^2)/g_{1N}^{n.s.}(x,Q^2)$ and 10% for $g_{1A=3}^{n.s}(x,Q^2)/g_{1N}^{n.s.}(x,Q^2)$. By imposing the requirement that the Bjorken sum rule is satisfied we model the effect of enhancement. We find the effect of enhancement at $x \approx 0.125 (0.15)$ to be of an order of $20 (55)%$ for $g_{1A=7}^{n.s. 3/2}(x,Q^2)/g_{1N}^{n.s.}(x,Q^2)$ and $14 (40)%$ for $g_{1A=3}^{n.s}(x,Q^2)/g_{1N}^{n.s.}(x,Q^2)$, if enhancement occupies the region $0.05 \leq x \leq 0.2$ ($0.1 \leq x \leq 0.2$). We predict a 2% effect in the difference of the scattering cross sections of deep inelastic scattering of an unpolarized projectile off $^7$Li with $M_{J}$=3/2 and $M_{J}$=1/2. We also show explicitly that the many-nucleon description of deep inelastic scattering off $^7$Li becomes invalid in the enhancement region $0.05 < x \leq 0.2$. △ Less

Hard exclusive pseudoscalar meson electroproduction and spin structure of a nucleon

Abstract: The amplitude for hard exclusive pseudoscalar meson electroproduction off nucleon (nuclear) targets is computed in QCD within the leading $α_s \ln {Q^2/λ_{QCD}^{2}}$ approximation. We show that the distribution of recoil nucleons depends strongly on the angle between the momentum of the recoil nucleon and the polarization vector of the target (or outgoing nucleon). This dependence is especially… ▽ More The amplitude for hard exclusive pseudoscalar meson electroproduction off nucleon (nuclear) targets is computed in QCD within the leading $α_s \ln {Q^2/λ_{QCD}^{2}}$ approximation. We show that the distribution of recoil nucleons depends strongly on the angle between the momentum of the recoil nucleon and the polarization vector of the target (or outgoing nucleon). This dependence is especially sensitive to the spin flip skewed parton distribution (SPD) $\widetilde E$. We argue also that the scaling for this spin asymmetry sets in at lower Q^2 than that for the absolute cross section. Basing on the chiral quark-soliton model of the nucleon we estimate quantitatively the spin asymmetry. In the case of pi+ production this asymmetry is dominated at small t by the contribution of the pion pole in the isovector SPD $\widetilde E$ as required by PCAC. In the case of K0 production off a proton we find a large enhancement of the cross section as compared to the case of pi0 production. For the forward production of neutral pseudoscalar mesons off a deuteron target we find the cross section should be zero for the zero deuteron helicity (along the $γ^*D$ direction). We consider also cross sections of quasielastic processes off nuclei including the feasibility to implant K+,rho-mesons into nuclear volume. △ Less

Diffraction at HERA, Color Opacity and Nuclear Shadowing

Based on the current analyzes of diffraction at HERA we find that the average strength of the interactions which govern diffraction in the gluon sector at $x \le 10^{-3}, Q_0=2 GeV$ is ~50 mb. Thi… ▽ More The QCD factorization theorem for diffractive processes in DIS is used to derive formulae for the leading twist contribution to the nuclear shadowing of parton distributions in the low thickness limit. Based on the current analyzes of diffraction at HERA we find that the average strength of the interactions which govern diffraction in the gluon sector at $x \le 10^{-3}, Q_0=2 GeV$ is ~50 mb. This is 3 times larger than in the quark sector and suggests that applicability of DGLAP approximation requires significantly larger $Q_0$ in the gluon sector. We use this information to estimate quark and gluon shadowing for heavy nuclei and to calculate its$Q^2$ depen- dence. For A~200 the amount of the gluon shadowing: $G_A/AG_N\sim 0.25-0.4$ at $x<10^{-3},Q=2GeV$ is sensitive to the probability of the small size configurations within wave function of the gluon "partonometer" at the $Q_0$ scale. At this scale for $A\sim 200$ the nonperturbative contribution to the gluon density is reduced by a factor of 4-5 at $x \le 10^{-3}$ unmasking PQCD physics in the gluon distribution of heavy nuclei. Such shadowing would strongly modify the first stage of the heavy ion collisions at LHC, and would lead to large color opacity effects in $eA$ collisions at x<0.001. The leading twist contribution to the cross section of the coherent $J/ψ$ production off $A\ge 12$ nuclei at $\sqrt s \ge 70$ GeV is strongly reduced as compared to the naive color transparency expectations. The Gribov black body limit for $F_{2A}(x,Q^2)$ is extended to the case of the gluon distributions in nuclei and shown to be relevant for the HERA kinematics of $eA$ collisions. Diffractive production of charm and gluon nuclear shadowing

N -> Delta DVCS, exclusive DIS processes and skewed quark distributions in large N_c limit

Abstract: We evaluate the amplitude of Bethe-Heitler process: γ^* p -> γΔ^+ -electron bremsstrahlung of photon accompanied by the excitation of Δ… ▽ More We evaluate the amplitude of Bethe-Heitler process: γ^* p -> γΔ^+ -electron bremsstrahlung of photon accompanied by the excitation of Δ$ isobar. We show that this background is suppressed at small momentum transfer squared t to a proton relative to that for γ^* p -> γp and γ^* p\to -> Δ^+ - DVCS processes. From experimental point of view, this means that N -> N and N -> Δskewed quark distributions (SQD's) might be measurable at small momentum transfer. Several implications and applications of the QCD factorization theorem for the processes γ_{L}^* + p -> h_f +h_s are discussed where h_f - the particle produced along photon momentum $\vec q$ maybe either a meson or a baryon. We discuss also t dependence of DVCS and exclusive meson production as the practical criteria to distinguish between soft and hard regime. Basing on the large-N_c picture of the nucleon as a soliton of the effective chiral Lagrangian we derive relations between N -> N and N ->ΔSQD's which can be used to estimate amplitude of N -> ΔDVCS . △ Less

We consider the scattering from unpolarized and polarized targets as well as processes where the polarization of the recoil deuteron is measured. Our main motivation results from the need for a quantitative analysis of the space-time structure of photon-induced processes. In this respect we suggest several possibilities to explore the characteristic longitudinal interaction length in coherent vector meson production. Furthermore, we outline methods for an investigation of color coherence effects. In addition to the presentation of benchmark values for the maximal possible color coherence effect in various kinematic regions, we illustrate the anticipated phenomena within the color diffusion model. Finally we recall that the determination of vector meson-nucleon cross sections is not a closed issue. Cross Section Fluctuations of Photon Projectile in Generalized Vector Meson Dominance Model

We find that within the GVMD model the virtual photon has two main components: the ''hard'' one with the small cross section of the order of $1/Q^2$ and the high probability and the ''soft'' one with a typical hadronic cross section with the probability suppressed by the factor of $1/Q^2$. Thus the GVDM model produces $P_γ(σ,Q^2)$ similar to that within the parton model and suggests the conspiracy between hard and soft QCD at $Q^2 > 1$ GeV$^2$. We study the limit $σ\to 0$ and show, that $P_γ(σ,Q^2) \propto 1/ σ$ in both GVMD model and QCD. Thus similarly to the parton model the GVMD model predicts the Color Transparency phenomenon. This is an indirect indication that Bjorken scaling, Color Transparency and shadowing in nuclei in DIS are closely related. △ Less

Nondiagonal Parton Distributions in the Leading Logarithmic Approximation

Diffractive Heavy Quarkonium Photo- and Electroproduction in QCD

Abstract: Hard diffractive photo- and electroproduction of heavy vector mesons ($J/ψ$ and $Υ$) is evaluated within the leading $α_s\ln{Q^2 \overΛ_{QCD}^2}$ approximation of QCD. In difference from our earlier work on that subject, also the production of transversely polarized vector mesons is calculated. In difference from our earlier work on that subject, also the production of transversely polarized vector mesons is calculated. Special emphasis is placed on the role of the vector meson's $q\bar q$ light-cone wave function. In that context, conventional non-relativistic quarkonium models and a light-front QCD bound state calculation are critically examined and confronted with QCD expectations. Our numerical analysis finds a significant high momentum tail in the latter wave functions and a deviation from the expected asymptotic behavior of $φ_V(z,b=0)\propto z(1-z)$. We then design an interpolation to match the quarkonium models at large inter-quark separations with QCD expectations at small distances. We use these results to compare our predictions for the forward differential cross section of $J/ψ$ photo- and electroproduction with recent experimental results from HERA. In addition, our earlier discussion of $ρ^o$ electroproduction is updated in light of recent experimental and theoretical enhancements. △ Less

Abstract: We formulate and prove a QCD factorization theorem for hard exclusive electroproduction of mesons in QCD. The proof is valid for the leading power in Q and all logarithms. This generalizes previous work on vector meson production in the diffractive region of small x. The amplitude is expressed in terms of off-diagonal generalizations of the usual parton densities. Interaction of small size wave packet with hadron target

Soft Neutron Productions - a Window to the Final State Interactions in DIS

Abstract: We analyze production of soft neutrons ($E_n\le 10MeV$) in deep inelastic scattering and conclude that the recent E-665 data indicate strong suppression of the final state interactions in DIS at high energies. Hence we suggest that studies of the energy dependence of the soft neutrons yields would provide a sensitive probe of the dynamics of the final state interactions in DIS. Probing the Origin of the EMC Effect via Tagged Structure Functions of the Deuteron

Abstract: We demonstrate that measurement of tagged structure functions of the deuteron in (e,e'N) semi-inclusive reactions can discriminate between different hypotheses on the origin of the nuclear EMC effect. Nearthreshold Large $Q^2$ Electroproduction off Polarized Deuteron

Abstract: The exclusive and inclusive electroproduction off the polarized deuteron is considered at large $Q^2$ and $x \ge 0.5$. It is shown that the use of a polarized target will allow to emphasize smaller than average internucleon distances in the deuteron. Chiral Transparency

On the Possibility to Study Color Transparency in the Large Momentum Transfer Exclusive $d(p,2p)n$ Reaction

Feynman Graphs and Generalized Eikonal Approach to High Energy Knock-Out Processes

A new, more stringent kinematic restriction on the region where the contribution of short-range nucleon correlations is enhanced in semi-exclusive knock-out processes is derived.
