The fluctuations of the small-x gluon density are related to the ratio of inelastic and elastic vector meson production in e-p scattering. A simple dynamical model explains the HERA data and predicts the x- and Q^2-dependence of the ratio. In p-p/pbar-p scattering, fluctuations enhance multiple hard processes (but cannot explain the Tevatron CDF data), and reduce gap survival in central exclusive diffraction.

We evaluate the large momentum transfer $J/ψ$ photoproduction with rapidity gaps in ultraperipheral proton-ion collisions at the LHC which provides an effective method of probing dynamics of large t elastic hard QCD Pomeron interactions. It is shown that the experimental studies of this process would allow to investigate the energy dependence of cross section of elastic scattering of a small $c\bar c$ dipole off the gluon over a wide range of invariant energies 10^3 < s_{c\bar c - gluon} < 10^6 GeV^2. The accessible energy range exceeds the one reached in γp at HERA by a factor of 10 and allows the kinematic cuts which improve greatly sensitivity to the Pomeron dynamics as compared to the HERA measurements. The cross section is expected to change by a factor \ge 20 throughout this interval and our estimates predict quite reasonable counting rates for this process with the several of the LHC detectors.

Novel processes probing the decay of nucleus after removal of a nucleon with momentum larger than Fermi momentum by hard probes finally proved unambiguously the evidence for long sought presence of short-range correlations (SRCs) in nuclei. In combination with the analysis of large $Q^2$, A(e,e')X processes at $x>1$ they allow us to conclude that (i) practically all nucleons with momenta $\ge$ 300 MeV/c belong to SRCs, consisting mostly of two nucleons, ii) probability of such SRCs in medium and heavy nuclei is $\sim 25%$, iii) a fast removal of such nucleon practically always leads to emission of correlated nucleon with approximately opposite momentum, iv) proton removal from two-nucleon SRCs in 90% of cases is accompanied by a removal of a neutron and only in 10% by a removal of another proton. We explain that observed absolute probabilities and the isospin structure of two nucleon SRCs confirm the important role that tensor forces play in internucleon interactions. We find also that the presence of SRCs requires modifications of the Landau Fermi liquid approach to highly asymmetric nuclear matter and leads to a significantly faster cooling of cold neutron stars with neutrino cooling operational even for $N_p/N_n \le 0.1$. The effect is even stronger for the hyperon stars. Theoretical challenges raised by the discovered dominance of nucleon degrees of freedom in SRCs and important role of the spontaneously broken chiral symmetry in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) in resolving them are considered. We also outline directions for future theoretical and experimental studies of the physics relevant for SRCs.

We summarize the physics topics which can be addressed by measurements of high-Q^2 exclusive electroproduction of strange mesons, gamma* N -> phi N, K* Lambda, K Lambda, K Sigma, at Jefferson Lab with 11 GeV beam energy. The proposed investigations are aimed both at exploring the reaction mechanism (dominance of point-like configurations) and extracting information about baryon structure from the data (generalized parton distributions, or GPDs). They include (a) probing the t-dependence of the nucleon's gluon GPD (transverse spatial distribution of gluons) in phi meson production; (b) separating the nucleon helicity-flip and nonflip quark GPDs in K* Lambda production with measurement of the Lambda recoil polarization; (c) probing strangeness polarization in the nucleon in K Lambda and K Sigma production. These studies rely only on the analysis of cross section ratios, which are less affected by the theoretical uncertainties of present GPD-based calculations than absolute cross sections.

We study the electroproduction of rho mesons in nuclei at intermediate energies, deriving a treatment of the energy lost by the rho in each step of multiple-scattering. This enables a close match between calculations and the experimental kinematic conditions. A standard Glauber calculation is presented, and then the effects of color-transparency are included. The influence of poor experimental resolution on the extracted transparency is assessed. The effects of $ρ$ meson decay inside the nucleus are examined, and are typically about 5 percent at most. This effect disappears rapidly as $Q^2$ increases from about 1 to 3 GeV$^2$, causing a rise in the transparency that is not attributable to color transparency. The size of color transparency effects for C and Fe nuclei is studied for values of $Q^2$ up to 10 GeV$^2$. The detailed results depend strongly on the assumed value of the $ρN$ cross section. The overall effects of color transparency are greater than about 10 % for both nuclear targets if $Q^2$ is greater than about 5 GeV$^2$.

The perturbative QCD formula for minijet production consitutes an important ingredient in models describing the total cross section and multiparticle production in hadron-hadron scattering at high energies. Using arguments based on s-channel unitarity we set bounds on the minimum value of p_T for which the leading twist minijet formula can be used. For large impact parameters where correlations between partons appear to be small we find that the minimum value of p_T should be greater than 2.5 GeV for LHC energies and greater than 3.5 GeV for cosmic ray energies of about 50 TeV. We also argue that for collisions with values of impact parameters typical for heavy particle production the values of minimum p_T are likely to be considerably larger. We also analyze and quantify the potential role of saturation effects in the gluon density. We find that although saturation effects alone are not sufficient to restore unitarity, they are likely to play an important role at LHC energies.

We investigate the impact of very strong small x gluon fields in colliding nucleons at LHC energies on the interaction of valence quarks. We find that in the range of small impact parameters, which contribute significantly to the production of heavy new particles, several of the valence quarks receive large transverse momenta, exceeding 1 GeV/c. This results in a suppression of leading baryon production and consequently in an additional energy flow to smaller rapidities. We suggest several triggers for centrality in pp collisions which allow one to study the propagation of partons through gluon fields of a strength comparable to the ones encountered in heavy ion collisions at the LHC.

Inclusive DIS with unpolarized beam exhibits a subtle dependence on the transverse target spin, arising from the interference of one-photon and two-photon exchange amplitudes in the cross section. We argue that this observable probes mainly the quark helicity-flip amplitudes induced by the non-perturbative vacuum structure of QCD (spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking). This conjecture is based on (a) the absence of significant Sudakov suppression of the helicity-flip process if soft gluon emission in the quark subprocess is limited by the chiral symmetry-breaking scale mu_chiral^2 >> Lambda_QCD^2; (b) the expectation that the quark helicity-conserving twist-3 contribution is small. The normal target spin asymmetry is estimated to be of the order 10^{-4} in the kinematics of the planned Jefferson Lab Hall A experiment.

We study the transverse target spin dependence of the cross section for inclusive electron-nucleon scattering with unpolarized beam. Such dependence is absent in the one-photon exchange approximation (Christ-Lee theorem) and arises only in higher orders of the QED expansion, from the interference of one-photon and absorptive two-photon exchange amplitudes as well as from real photon emission (bremsstrahlung). We demonstrate that the transverse spin-dependent two-photon exchange cross section is free of QED infrared and collinear divergences. We argue that in DIS kinematics the transverse spin dependence should be governed by a "parton-like" mechanism in which the two-photon exchange couples mainly to a single quark. We calculate the normal spin asymmetry in an approximation where the dominant contribution arises from quark helicity flip due to interactions with non-perturbative vacuum fields (constituent quark picture) and is proportional to the quark transversity distribution in the nucleon. Such helicity-flip processes are not significantly Sudakov-suppressed if the infrared scale for gluon emission in the photon-quark subprocess is of the order of the chiral symmetry breaking scale, mu_chiral^2 >> Lambda_QCD^2. We estimate the asymmetry in the kinematics of the planned Jefferson Lab Hall A experiment to be of the order 10^{-4}, with different sign for proton and neutron. We also comment on the spin dependence in the limit of soft high-energy scattering.

We discuss the physics of large impact parameter interactions at the LHC: ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs). The dominant processes in UPCs are photon-nucleon (nucleus) interactions. The current LHC detector configurations can explore small $x$ hard phenomena with nuclei and nucleons at photon-nucleon center-of-mass energies above 1 TeV, extending the $x$ range of HERA by a factor of ten. In particular, it will be possible to probe diffractive and inclusive parton densities in nuclei using several processes. The interaction of small dipoles with protons and nuclei can be investigated in elastic and quasi-elastic $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ production as well as in high $t$ $ρ^0$ production accompanied by a rapidity gap. Several of these phenomena provide clean signatures of the onset of the new high gluon density QCD regime. The LHC is in the kinematic range where nonlinear effects are several times larger than at HERA. Two-photon processes in UPCs are also studied. In addition, while UPCs play a role in limiting the maximum beam luminosity, they can also be used a luminosity monitor by measuring mutual electromagnetic dissociation of the beam nuclei. We also review similar studies at HERA and RHIC as well as describe the potential use of the LHC detectors for UPC measurements.

It is widely discussed in the literature that the wave function of the nucleon bound in a nucleus is modified due to the interaction with the surrounding medium. We argue that the modification should strongly depend on the momentum of the nucleon. We study such an effect in the case of the point-like configuration component of the wave function of a nucleon bound in a nucleus A, considering the case of arbitrary final state of the spectator A-1 system. We show that for non relativistic values of the nucleon momentum, the momentum dependence of the nucleon deformation appears to follow from rather general considerations and discuss the implications of our theoretical observation for two different phenomena: i) the search for medium induced modifications of the nucleon radius of a bound nucleon through the measurement of the electromagnetic nucleon form factors via the A(e,e'p)X process, and ii) the A-dependence of the EMC effect; in this latter case we also present a new method of estimating the fraction of the nucleus light-cone momentum carried by the photons and find that in a heavy nuclei protons loose about 2% of their momentum.

It is based on the idea that hard and soft interactions are approximately independent (QCD factorization), and allows us to calculate the RGS probability in a model-independent way in terms of the gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in the colliding protons and the pp elastic scattering amplitude. Here we focus on the transverse momentum dependence of the cross section. We propose a new approach to the problem of rapidity gap survival (RGS) in the production of high-mass systems (H = dijet, heavy quarkonium, Higgs boson) in double-gap exclusive diffractive pp scattering, pp -> p + (gap) + H + (gap) + p. It is based on the idea that hard and soft interactions proceed over widely different time- and distance scales and are thus approximately independent. The high-mass system is produced in a hard scattering process with exchange of two gluons between the protons. Its amplitude is calculable in terms of the gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in the protons, which can be measured in J/psi production in exclusive ep scattering. The hard scattering process is modified by soft spectator interactions, which we calculate in a model-independent way in terms of the pp elastic scattering amplitude. Contributions from inelastic intermediate states are suppressed. A simple geometric picture of the interplay of hard and soft interactions in diffraction is obtained. The onset of the black-disk limit in pp scattering at TeV energies strongly suppresses diffraction at small impact parameters and is the main factor in determining the RGS probability. Correlations between hard and soft interactions (e.g. due to scattering from the long-range pion field of the proton, or due to possible short-range transverse correlations between partons) further decrease the RGS probability. We also investigate the dependence of the diffractive cross section on the transverse momenta of the final-state protons ("diffraction pattern"). By measuring this dependence one can perform detailed tests of the interplay of hard and soft interactions, and even extract information about the gluon GPD in the proton. Such studies appear to be feasible with the planned forward detectors at the LHC.

We evaluate the cross sections for the production of vector mesons in exclusive ultraperipheral proton-ion collisions at LHC. We find that the rates are high enough to study the energy and momentum transfer dependence of vector mesons - rho, phi, J/psi, Upsilon photoproduction in gamma p scattering in a wide energy range extending the measurements which were performed at HERA, providing new information about interplay of soft and hard physics in diffraction. Also, we calculate the contributions to the vector meson yield due to production of vector mesons off nuclear target by photons emitted by proton. We find, that least in the case of Upsilon production it is feasible to observe simultaneously both these processes. Such measurements would increase the precision with which the A-dependence of exclusive onium production can be determined. This would also enable one to estimate the amount of nuclear gluon shadowing of generalized gluon distributions at much smaller x than that is possible in AA collisions and to measure the cross sections for photoproduction processes in a significantly wider energy range than that achieved in experiments with fixed nuclear targets. We also present the cross section for vector meson production in pA collisions at RHIC. In addition, we consider production of vector mesons off protons with large rapidity gaps and large t. These processes probe small x dynamics of the elastic interaction of small dipoles at high energies and large but finite t, that is in the kinematics where DGLAP evolution is strongly suppressed. We estimate that this process could be studied at LHC up to W ~1 TeV with detectors which will be available at LHC.

We analyze recent data from high-momentum-transfer $(p,pp)$ and $(p,ppn)$ reactions on Carbon. For this analysis, the two-nucleon short-range correlation (NN-SRC) model for backward nucleon emission is extended to include the motion of the NN-pair in the mean field. The model is found to describe major characteristics of the data. Our analysis demonstrates that the removal of a proton from the nucleus with initial momentum 275-550 MeV/c is $92^{+8}_{-18}%$ of the time accompanied by the emission of a correlated neutron that carries momentum roughly equal and opposite to the initial proton momentum. Within the NN-SRC dominance assumption the data indicate that the probabilities of $pp$ or $nn$ SRCs in the nucleus are at least a factor of six smaller than that of $pn$ SRCs. Our result is the first estimate of the isospin structure of NN-SRCs in nuclei, and may have important implication for modeling the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter.

We argue that in the small x processes, in the black disc QCD regime (BDR) a very forward parton propagating through the nuclear matter should loose a significant and increasing with energy and atomic number fraction of its initial energy as a result of dominance of inelastic interactions, causality and energy-momentum conservation. We evaluate these energy losses and find them to lead to the significant suppression of the forward jet production in the central NA collisions at collider energies with a moderate suppression of recoiling jet at central rapidities. We confront our expectations with the recent RHIC data of the STAR collaboration on the probability, $P$, for emission of at least one fast hadron at a central rapidity in association with production of a very forward high $p_t$ neutral pion in $pp$ and $dAu$ collisions. We calculate the A-dependence of $P$, and find that the data imply a strong suppression of leading pion production at central impact parameters. We also conclude that production of recoil jets in the hard subprocess is not suppressed providing further evidence for the dominance of peripheral collisions. Both features of the data are consistent with the onset of BDR. We suggest new phenomena and new observables to investigate BDR at RHIC and LHC.

We review a recently proposed framework for studying the approach to the unitarity limit in small-x processes in ep and pp scattering within the DGLAP approximation. Our formulation is based on the correspondence between the standard QCD factorization theorems for hard processes and the dipole picture of small-x scattering in the leading logarithmic approximation. It allows us to incorporate information about the transverse spatial distribution of gluons in the proton (GPD) from exclusive vector meson production at HERA. We show that the interaction of small-size color singlet configurations with the proton approaches the "black-disk limit" (BDL) due to the growth of the DGLAP gluon density at small x. This new dynamical regime is marginally visible in diffractive DIS at HERA, and will be fully reached in central pp collisions at LHC.

We suggest several strategies to address the extraction of F_2^n and to measure at the same time the effect of nuclear shadowing via the measurement of the distortion of the proton spectator spectrum in the semi-inclusive e D \to e^{\prime}NX process. We address the issue of the final state interactions in the e D \to e^{\prime}NX process and examine how they affect the extraction of F_2^n.

We apply the dipole formalism that has been developed to describe low-x deep inelastic scattering to the case of ultra-high energy real photons with nucleon and nuclear targets. We hope that there will be future modeling applications in high-energy particle astrophysics. We modify the dipole model of McDermott, Frankfurt, Guzey, and Strikman (MFGS) by fixing the cross section at the maximum value allowed by the unitarity constraint whenever the dipole model would otherwise predict a unitarity violation. We observe that, under reasonable assumptions, a significant fraction of the real photon cross section results from dipole interactions where the QCD coupling constant is small, and that the MFGS model is consistent with the Froissart bound. The resulting model predicts a rise of the cross section of about a factor of 12 when the the photon energy is increased from $10^{3}$ GeV to $10^{12}$ GeV. We extend the analysis to the case of scattering off a $^{12}$C target. We find that, due to the low thickness of the light nuclei, unitarity for the scattering off individual nucleons plays a larger role than for the scattering off the nucleus as a whole. At the same time the proximity to the black disk limit results in a substantial increase of the amount of nuclear shadowing. This, in turn, slows down the rate of increase of the total cross section with energy as compared to the proton case. As a result we find that the $^{12}$C nuclear cross section rises by about a factor of 7 when the photon energy is increased from $10^{3}$ GeV to $10^{12}$ GeV. We also find that the fraction of the cross section due to production of charm reaches 30% for the highest considered energies with a $^{12}$C target.

We present a model independent procedure for extracting deep-inelastic structure function of "free'' neutron from the electron - deuteron scattering with protons produced in the target fragmentation region of the reaction. This procedure is based on the extrapolation of t, which describes the invariant momentum transfered to the proton, to the unphysical region corresponding to the mass of the struck neutron. We demonstrate that the impulse approximation diagram of the reaction has a pole at this limit with a residue being proportional to the "free" neutron structure function. The method is analogous to that of Chew and Low for extraction of the ``free'' pion-pion and neutron-neutron cross sections from p(pion,p)X and d(n,n)pn reactions respectively. We demonstrate that in the extrapolation the final state interaction amplitudes are smooth functions of $t$ and have negligible contribution in the extracted ``free'' nucleon structure function. We also estimate the range of the recoil nucleon momenta which could be used for successful extrapolation procedure.

We analyze the cross section for vector meson photo-production off a deuteron for the intermediate range of photon energies starting at a few GeVs above the threshold and higher. We reproduce the steps in the derivation of the conventional non-relativistic Glauber expression based on an effective diagrammatic method while making corrections for Fermi motion and intermediate energy kinematic effects. We show that, for intermediate energy vector meson production, the usual Glauber factorization breaks down and we derive corrections to the usual Glauber method to linear order in longitudinal nucleon momentum. The purpose of our analysis is to establish methods for probing interesting physics in the production mechanism for phi-mesons and heavier vector mesons. We demonstrate how neglecting the breakdown of Glauber factorization can lead to errors in measurements of basic cross sections extracted from nuclear data.

We demonstrate that soft multiple rescatterings lead to the factorization breaking of hard diffraction in proton-nucleus scattering, which is larger than in hadron-nucleon scattering. At the LHC and RHIC kinematics, we compare the hard diffractive to e.m.~mechanisms of hard coherent production of two jets in proton-nucleus scattering. We study the x_{\Pomeron}, βand A-dependence of the ratio of the dijet production cross sections due to the two effects, R. We demonstrate that in proton-heavy nucleus hard coherent diffraction at the LHC, R is small, which offers a clean method to study hard photon-proton scattering at the energies exceeding the HERA energies by the factor of ten. On the other hand, the use of lighter nuclei, such as Ca-40, will allow to study the screened nuclear diffractive parton distribution. Moreover, a comparison of the dijet diffractive production to the heavy-quark-jet diffractive production will estimate the screened nuclear diffractive gluon PDF, which will be measured in nucleus-nucleus ultraperipheral collisions at the LHC.

We summarize the lessons learned from studies of hard scattering processes in high-energy electron-proton collisions at HERA and antiproton-proton collisions at the Tevatron, with the aim of predicting new strong interaction phenomena observable in next-generation experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Processes reviewed include inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) at small x, exclusive and diffractive processes in DIS and hadron-hadron scattering, as well as color transparency and nuclear shadowing effects. A unified treatment of these processes is outlined, based on factorization theorems of quantum chromodynamics, and using the correspondence between the "parton" picture in the infinite-momentum frame and the "dipole" picture of high-energy processes in the target rest frame. The crucial role of the three-dimensional quark and gluon structure of the nucleon is emphasized. A new dynamical effect predicted at high energies is the unitarity, or black disk, limit (BDL) in the interaction of small dipoles with hadronic matter, due to the increase of the gluon density at small x. This effect is marginally visible in diffractive DIS at HERA and will lead to the complete disappearance of Bjorken scaling at higher energies. In hadron-hadron scattering at LHC energies and beyond (cosmic ray physics), the BDL will be a standard feature of the dynamics, with implications for (a) hadron production at forward and central rapidities in central proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions, in particular events with heavy particle production (Higgs), (b) proton-proton elastic scattering, (c) heavy-ion collisions. We also outline the possibilities for studies of diffractive processes and photon-induced reactions (ultraperipheral collisions) at LHC, as well as possible measurements with a future electron-ion collider.

Fixing parameters of the model for cross section fluctuations by the available data, we make predictions for the total, elastic and coherent diffractive dissociation proton-nucleus cross sections for the RHIC and LHC energy range. We extract the total $J/ψ$ nucleon cross section from photon-nucleon collisions by accounting for the color transparency phenomenon within the frame of the GVDM (Generalized Vector meson Dominance Model). Main aim is to investigate those features of the reaction which can be unambiguously identified with the short range properties of the ground state nuclear wave function. To evaluate the differential cross section we work in the formalism of the decay function which characterizes the property of the ground state wave function as well as the decay properties of final two nucleon spectator system. Our main motivation here is to explore the accessibility of two-- and three--nucleon short range correlations in $^3$He as well as to isolate unambiguously single and double rescattering processes in the reaction dynamics. We discuss that hadron-induced atmospheric air showers from ultra-high energy cosmic rays are sensitive to QCD interactions at very small momentum fractions x where nonlinear effects should become important. The leading partons from the projectile acquire large random transverse momenta as they pass through the strong field of the target nucleus, which breaks up their coherence. This leads to a steeper x_F-distribution of leading hadrons as compared to low energy collisions, which in turn reduces the position of the shower maximum Xmax. We argue that high-energy hadronic interaction models should account for this effect, caused by the approach to the black-body limit, which may shift fits of the composition of the cosmic ray spectrum near the GZK cutoff towards lighter elements. We further show that present data on Xmax(E) exclude that the rapid ~ 1/x^0.3 growth of the saturation boundary (which is compatible with RHIC and HERA data) persists up to GZK cutoff energies. Measurements of pA collisions at LHC could further test the small-x regime and advance our understanding of high density QCD significantly.

We discuss the global structure of pp events at LHC with hard processes (particle production in two-parton collisions) on the basis of the transverse spatial characteristics of the partonic initial state. Studies of hard exclusive processes in ep scattering have shown that the transverse area occupied by partons with x >= 10^{-2} is much smaller than the size of the nucleon as it appears in generic inelastic pp collisions at high energies ("two-scale picture"). We show that this is consistent with the observation that the elastic pp amplitude at the Tevatron energy is close to the black body limit at small impact parameters. Our picture implies that inclusive heavy particle production (Higgs, SUSY) happens only in central pp collisions. At LHC energies, the final state characteristics of such events are strongly influenced by the approach to the black body limit, and thus may differ substantially from what one expects based on the extrapolation of Tevatron results. Our two-scale picture also allows us to analyze several types of hard diffractive processes observable at LHC: i) Diffractive proton dissociation into three jets, which probes small-size configurations in the proton wave function; ii) exclusive diffractive Higgs production, in which we estimate the rapidity gap survival probability; iii) inclusive diffractive processes.

We analyze the pattern of the onset of complete absorption (the black limit) in the high energy hadron-hadron collisions. The black limit arises due to the hard and soft interaction dynamics as a function of the impact parameters b. Both hard and soft mechanisms provide universal dependence of the partial amplitude of the high energy elastic hadron- hadron scattering on the impact parameter ${\bf b}$ and result in the radius of interaction proportional to $\ln (s/s_0)$. We find that with increase of the collision energies hard interactions lead to a faster increase of the impact parameter range where the partial wave amplitudes are approaching the unitarity limit. Consequently, we argue that at super high energies whenthe radius of hadronic interactions significantly exceeds static radii of the interacting hadrons(nuclei) the ratio of total cross sections of nucleon-nucleon, meson-nucleon, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus collisions becomes equal to one. The same universality is also expected for the structure functions of nuclei: $F_{2 A}(x,Q^2)/F_{2 N}(x,Q^2)> \to 1$, at very small $x$, and for the ratio $>σ_{gamma A}/>σ_{>γp}\to 1$ at superhigh energies. We analyze how accounting for the energy dependence of the interaction radii changes the geometry of hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, the energy dependence of total, absorption and inelastic cross sections, the distribution over the number of wounded nucleons in proton-nucleus collisions and find that these effects are noticeable already for the LHC energies and even more so close to the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin limit.

We discuss several examples of how the transverse spatial distribution of partons in the nucleon, as well as multiparton correlations, can be probed by observing hard processes (dijets) in high-energy pp (pbar p) and pA (dA) collisions. Such studies can complement the information gained from measurements of hard exclusive processes in ep scattering. The transverse spatial distribution of partons determines the distribution over pp impact parameters of events with hard dijet production. Correlations in the transverse positions of partons can be studied in multiple dijet production. We find that the correlation cross section measured by the CDF Collaboration, sigma_eff = 14.5 +/- 1.7^{+ 1.7}_{-2.3} mb, can be explained by "constituent quark" type quark-gluon correlations with r_q ~ r_N / 3, as suggested by the instanton liquid model of the QCD vacuum. Longitudinal and transverse multiparton correlations can be separated in a model-independent way by comparing multiple dijet production in pp and pA collisions. Finally, we estimate the cross section for exclusive diffractive Higgs production in pp collisions at LHC (rapidity gap survival probability), by combining the impact parameter distribution implied by the hard partonic process with information about soft interactions gained in pp elastic scattering.

Abstract:
We use information from DIS and the two gluon nucleon form factor to estimate the impact parameter amplitude of hadronic configurations in the dipole model of DIS. We demonstrate that only a small fraction of the total $γ^{\ast}N$ cross section at $x\sim 10^{-4}$ is due to scattering that occurs near the black body limit. Strong modifications of the phase-space distribution of produced particles as compared to leading-twist models are predicted which reflect in the properties of cosmic ray induced air showers in the atmosphere. Assuming hadronic primaries, our results suggest a light composition near GZK cutoff energies. We also show that cosmic ray data discriminate among various QCD evolution scenarios for the rate of increase of the gluon density at small x, such as fixed-coupling and running-coupling BFKL evolution. There are clear indications for a slower growth of the gluon density as compared to RHIC and HERA, due e.g. to running-coupling effects.

We find that x_Au > 0.02 dominate in the cross section.

We develop a theoretical framework for calculation of high $Q^2$ exclusive electro-disintegration of A=3 systems. The main result of this work is the calculation of the final state interaction of the struck energetic nucleon with recoil nucleons within the generalized eikonal approximation (GEA) which allows us to account for the finite and relatively large momenta of the bound nucleons in the nucleus. The important advantage of this approach is the possibility to study in a self-consistent way the short range correlations in nuclei. This is due to the fact that GEA does not require a stationary condition for recoil nucleons as conventional Glauber approximation does. As a result GEA treats explicitly the Fermi motion of recoil nucleons in the nucleus.
