This work is the seventh study in a series dedicated to investigating degeneracies of simultaneous age, mass, extinction, and metallicity determinations of partially resolved or unresolved star clusters with Hubble Space Telescope broadband aperture photometry. In the sixth work (hereafter, Paper I), it was demonstrated that the adaptive aperture photometry, performed to avoid the majority of the projected foreground and background stars falling within the apertures, gives more consistent colour indices for star clusters. In this study, we aim to supplement the homogeneous multi-colour aperture photometry results published in Paper~I and provide a complete M31 Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT) survey star cluster photometry catalogue for further analysis. Following Paper I, we used a two-aperture approach for photometry. The first aperture is the standard one used to measure total cluster fluxes. The second (smaller) aperture is introduced to avoid the bright foreground and background stars projecting onto the clusters. We selected the radii of smaller apertures to be larger than the half-light radii of the clusters. We present the second part of the star cluster aperture photometry catalogues for a sample of 1477 star clusters from the M31 PHAT survey not covered in Paper I. Compared to the M31 PHAT star cluster aperture photometry catalogue published by Johnson et al., adjustments were made to the cluster centre coordinates, aperture sizes, and sky background levels.

Ages of the stellar populations in Leo A range from $\sim$10 Myr to $\sim$10 Gyr. So far, only one star cluster has been discovered in this galaxy. Our aim is to search for star cluster candidates in the Leo A galaxy. We performed photometry of star-like objects on HST ACS archive observation frames in the $F475W$ and $F814W$ passbands and studied the spatial clustering of the Leo A stars down to the turn-off point of the old stellar populations. We report the discovery of four star clusters in the Leo A galaxy. This means that now a sample of five star clusters is known in Leo A. Two clusters are of a young age ($\sim$20 Myr; overlap** with HII regions) and low in mass ($\gtrsim$400 M$_\odot$ and $\gtrsim$150 M$_\odot$), the other three clusters are older ($\gtrsim$100 Myr) and also of low mass ($\gtrsim$300 M$_\odot$). These rough estimates are made assuming the isochrones of a metallicity derived for HII regions ($Z=0.0007$). Colour-magnitude diagrams of the stars residing in the circular areas of a 2.5arcsec radius around the clusters and integrated aperture photometry results of the clusters are presented.

The analysis of the main sequence (MS) and blue supergiant (BSG - "blue loop") stars enabled us to study the star formation history in the Leo A galaxy during the last $\sim$200 Myr. Also, we have discovered 5 low-mass ($\lesssim$400 M$_\odot$) star clusters within the ACS field. This finding, taking into account a low metallicity environment and a yet-undetected molecular gas in Leo A, constrains star formation efficiency estimates and scenarios. Inside the well known "hole" in the HI column density map (Hunter et al. 2012) we found a shock front (prominent in $Hα$), implying an unseen progenitor and reminding the "hole" problems widely discussed by Warren et al. (2011).

In order to separate the Milky Way (MW) and Leo A populations of red stars, we developed a photometric method, which enabled us to study the spatial distribution of BR stars within the Leo A galaxy. We found a significant difference in the scale-length (S-L) of radial distributions of the "young" and "old" red giant branch (RGB) stars -- $0.'82 \pm 0.'04$ and $1.'53 \pm 0.'03$, respectively. Also, we determined the S-L of BR stars of $0.'85 \pm 0.'05$, which closely matches that of the "young" RGB stars. Additionally, we found a sequence of peculiar RGB stars and 8 dust-enshrouded stars in the Leo A galaxy.

Stochasticity of bright stars introduces uncertainty and bias into derived structural parameters of star clusters. We have simulated a grid of cluster $V$-band images, observed with Subaru Suprime-Cam with age, mass, and size representing a cluster population in the M31 galaxy and derived their structural parameters by fitting King model to the surface brightness distribution. We have found that clusters less massive than $10^4 M_\odot$ show significant uncertainty in their core and tidal radii for all ages, while clusters younger than 10 Myr have their sizes systematically underestimated for all masses. This emphasizes the importance of stochastic simulations to asses the true uncertainty of structural parameters in studies of semi-resolved and unresolved clusters.

Context. An automatic tool to derive structural parameters of semi-resolved star clusters located in crowded stellar fields in nearby galaxies is needed for homogeneous processing of archival frames.
Aims. We have developed a program that automatically derives the structural parameters of star clusters and estimates errors by accounting for individual stars and variable sky background.
Methods. Models of observed frames consist of the cluster's surface brightness distribution, convolved with a point spread function; the stars, represented by the same point spread function; and a smoothly variable sky background. The cluster's model is fitted within a large radius by using the Levenberg-Marquardt and Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms to derive structural parameters, the flux of the cluster, and individual fluxes of all well-resolved stars.
Results. FitClust, a program to derive structural parameters of semi-resolved clusters in crowded stellar fields, was developed and is available for free use. The program was tested on simulated cluster frames, and was used to measure clusters of the M31 galaxy in Subaru Suprime-Cam frames.
Conclusions. Accounting for bright resolved stars and variable sky background significantly improves the accuracy of derived structural parameters of star clusters. However, their uncertainty remains dominated by the stochastic noise of unresolved stars.

We have carried out a survey of compact star clusters (apparent size <3 arcsec) in the southwest part of the M31 galaxy, based on the high-resolution Suprime-Cam images (17.5 arcmin x 28.5 arcmin), covering ~15% of the deprojected galaxy disk area. The UBVRI photometry of 285 cluster candidates (V < 20.5 mag) was performed using frames of the Local Group Galaxies Survey. The final sample, containing 238 high probability star cluster candidates (typical half-light radius r_h ~ 1.5 pc), was selected by specifying a lower limit of r_h > 0.15 arcsec (>0.6 pc). We derived cluster parameters based on the photometric data and multiband images by employing simple stellar population models. The clusters have a wide range of ages from ~5 Myr (young objects associated with 24 um and/or Ha emission) to ~10 Gyr (globular cluster candidates), and possess mass in a range of 3.0 < log(m/M_sol) < 4.3 peaking at m ~ 4000 M_sol. Typical age of these intermediate-mass clusters is in the range of 30 Myr < t < 3 Gyr, with a prominent peak at ~70 Myr. These findings suggest a rich intermediate-mass star cluster population in M31, which appears to be scarce in the Milky Way galaxy.

We present a program tool, SimClust, designed for Monte-Carlo modeling of star clusters. It populates the available stellar isochrones with stars according to the initial mass function and distributes stars randomly following the analytical surface number density profile. The tool is aimed at simulating realistic images of extragalactic star clusters and can be used to: (i) optimize object detection algorithms, (ii) perform artificial cluster tests for the analysis of star cluster surveys, and (iii) assess the stochastic effects introduced into photometric and structural parameters of clusters due to random distribution of luminous stars and non-uniform interstellar extinction. By applying SimClust, we have demonstrated a significant influence of stochastic effects on the determined photometric and structural parameters of low-mass star clusters in the M31 galaxy disk. We investigate the capability of the UBVRIJHK photometric system to quantify star clusters in terms of age, metallicity and color excess by their integrated photometry in the framework of PEGASE single stellar population (SSP) models. The age-metallicity-extinction degeneracy was analyzed for various parameter combinations, assuming different levels of photometric accuracy. We conclude, that most of the parameter degeneracies, typical to the UBVRI photometric system, are broken in the case when the photometry data are supplemented with at least one infrared magnitude of the JHK passbands, with an accuracy better than ~0.05 mag. The presented analysis with no preassumptions on the distribution of photometric errors of star cluster models, provides estimate of the intrinsic capability of any photometric system to determine star cluster parameters from integrated photometry.

Cluster's luminosity (M_V = -6.6) and half-light radius (r_h = 20.3 pc) are comparable to those of the extended globular clusters, discovered in more luminous Local Group galaxies, the Milky Way and M31. Extended globular clusters are suspected to be remnants of accreted dwarf galaxies, and the finding of such a cluster in the late-type dwarf spiral galaxy M33 would imply a complex merging history in the past.

In the majority of cases the derived UBVRI photometry errors represent the accuracy of cluster colors well, however, for faint objects, residing in crowded environments, uncertainties of colors could be underestimated. Therefore, prior to deriving cluster parameters via a comparison of measured colors with SSP models, biases of colors, arising due to background crowding, must be taken into account.
