We revisit optimization of functional renormalization group flows by analyzing regularized loop integrals. This leads us to a principle, the Principle of Strongest Singularity, and a corresponding order relation which allows to order existing regularization schemes with respect to the stability of renormalization group flows. Moreover, the order relation can be used to construct new regulators in a systematic fashion. For studies of critical behavior, which require to follow renormalization group flows down to the deep infrared regime, such new regulators may turn out to be particularly useful. The general application of this principle is demonstrated with the aid of a scalar field theory which is solved over a wide range of scales with novel methods borrowed from numerical fluid dynamics.

Visual analytics tools can help illustrate the spread of infectious diseases and enable informed decisions on epidemiological and public health issues. To create visualisation tools that are intuitive, easy to use, and effective in communicating information, continued research and development focusing on user-centric and methodological design models is extremely important. As a contribution to this topic, this paper presents the design and development process of the visual analytics application ESID (Epidemiological Scenarios for Infectious Diseases). ESID is a visual analytics tool aimed at projecting the future developments of infectious disease spread using reported and simulated data based on sound mathematical-epidemiological models. The development process involved a collaborative and participatory design approach with project partners from diverse scientific fields. The findings from these studies, along with the guidelines derived from them, played a pivotal role in sha** the visualisation tool.

Using analogies between flow equations from the Functional Renormalization Group and flow equations from (numerical) fluid dynamics we investigate the effects of bosonic fluctuations in a bosonized Gross-Neveu model -- namely the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa model. We study this model for finite numbers of fermions at varying chemical potential and temperature in the local potential approximation. Thereby we numerically demonstrate that for any finite number of fermions and as long as the temperature is non-zero, there is no $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry breaking for arbitrary chemical potentials.

Abstract:
We investigate the phase structure of the 2+1-dimensional Gross-Neveu model in the large-Nf limit, where Nf denotes the number of fermion flavors. We discuss two different fermion representations and their implication on the interpretation of a discrete symmetry of the action. We present numerical results, which indicate the existence of an inhomogeneous phase similar as in the 1+1-dimensional Gro…

Due to its ultrahigh electron transmissivity in a wide electron energy range, molecular impermeability, high electrical conductivity and excellent mechanical stiffness the suspended graphene membranes appear to be a nearly ideal window material for in situ (in vivo) environmental electron microscopy of nano- and mesoscopic objects (including bio-medical samples) immersed in liquids and/or in dense…

Due to its ultrahigh electron transmissivity in a wide electron energy range, molecular impermeability, high electrical conductivity and excellent mechanical stiffness the suspended graphene membranes appear to be a nearly ideal window material for in situ (in vivo) environmental electron microscopy of nano- and mesoscopic objects (including bio-medical samples) immersed in liquids and/or in dense gaseous media. In this communication, taking advantage of little modification of the graphene transfer protocol on to metallic and SiN supporting orifices, the reusable environmental cells with exchangeable graphene windows have been designed. Using colloidal gold nanoparticles (50 nm) dispersed in water as model objects for scanning electron microscopy in liquids, the different imaging conditions through graphene membrane have been tested. The limiting factors for electron microscopy in liquids such as electron beam induced water radiolysis and damage of graphene membrane at high electron doses were discussed.

Abstract:
Results of a systematic investigation of the vapour-liquid equilibria (VLE) of 30 individual two-centre Lennard-Jones plus pointquadrupole model fluids (2CLJQ) are reported over a range of reduced quadrupolar momentum $0 \le Q^{*2} \le 4$ and of reduced elongation $0 \le L^* \le 0.8$. Temperatures investigated are from about 55 % to about 95 % of the critical temperature of each fluid. Uniformly…

Temperatures investigated are from about 55 % to about 95 % of the critical temperature of each fluid. Uniformly the $NpT$+Test Particle Method based on molecular dynamics simulations is used for the generation of vapour pressures, saturated densities, and saturated enthalpies. Critical temperatures $T^*_{\rm c}$ and densities $ρ^*_{\rm c}$ are obtained from Guggenheim's equations. Empirical correlations for critical data $T^*_{\rm c}$ and $ρ^*_{\rm c}$ as well as for saturated densities $ρ'^*$, $ρ''^*$, and vapour pressures $p^*_σ$ are developed as global functions of the model parameters. In most cases they describe the simulation data within their statistical uncertainties. Critical pressures and acentric factors of the 2CLJQ fluid can be calculated from present correlations. The present simulations are a sound basis for adjustments of the model parameters $Q^{*2}$, $L^*$, $σ$, and $ε$ to experimental VLE data of real fluids.

Temperatures investigated are from about 55 % to about 95 % of the critical temperature of each fluid. The NpT+Test Particle Method is used for the generation of vapour pressures, saturated densities, and saturated enthalpies. For the lowest temperatures, these data are calculated with highly accurate chemical potentials obtained from the gradual insertion method. Critical temperatures $T*_c$ and densities $ρ*_c$ are obtained from Guggenheim's equations. Empirical correlations for critical data $T*_c$ and $ρ*_c$ as well as for saturated densities $ρ'*$, $ρ''*$, and vapour pressures $p*_σ$ are developed as global functions of the model parameters. They describe the simulation data generally within their statistical uncertainties. Critical pressures and acentric factors of the 2CLJD fluid can be calculated from these correlations. The present results are a sound basis for adjustments of the model parameters $μ^{*2}$, $L*$, $σ$, and $ε$ to experimental VLE data of real fluids.
