The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb${}^{-1}$ collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the LHCb detector. The CP-violation parameters are measured to be \begin{align*} S_{ψK^0_S} &= 0.717 \pm 0.013 (\text{stat}) \pm 0.008 (\text{syst}), \\ C_{ψK^0_S} &= 0.008 \pm 0.012 (\text{stat}) \pm 0.003 (\text{syst}). \end{align*} This measurement of $S_{ψK^0_S}$ represents the most precise single measurement of the CKM angle $β$ to date and is more precise than the current world average. In addition, measurements of the CP-violation parameters of the individual channels are reported and a combination with the LHCb Run 1 measurements is performed.

Observables related to CP violation are measured and the angle $γ$ is determined to be $γ=(49^{+ 22}_{-19})^\circ$. Measurements of the amplitude ratio and strong-phase difference between the favoured and suppressed $B^0$ decays are also presented.

The first measurement of the $Z$ boson production cross-section at centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 5.02\,$TeV in the forward region is reported, using $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment in year 2017, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $100 \pm 2\,\rm{pb^{-1}}$. The production cross-section is measured for final-state muons in the pseudorapidity range $2.0<η<4.5$ with transverse momentum $p_{\rm{T}}> 20\,\rm{GeV/}\it{c}$. The integrated cross-section is determined to be \[
σ_{Z \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-}} = 39.6 \pm 0.7\,(\rm{stat}) \pm 0.6\,(\rm{syst}) \pm 0.8\,(\rm{lumi}) \ \rm{pb} \] for the di-muon invariant mass in the range $60<M_{μμ}<120\,\rm{GeV/}\it{c^{2}}$. This result and the differential cross-section results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling.
Based on a previous LHCb measurement of the $Z$ boson production cross-section in $p$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV, the nuclear modification factor $R_{p\rm{Pb}}$ is measured for the first time at this energy. The measured values are $1.2^{+0.5}_{-0.3}\,(\rm{stat}) \pm 0.1\,(\rm{syst})$ in the forward region ($1.53<y^*_μ<4.03$) and $3.6^{+1.6}_{-0.9}\,(\rm{stat}) \pm 0.2\,(\rm{syst})$ in the backward region ($-4.97<y^*_μ<-2.47$), where $y^*_μ$ represents the muon rapidity in the centre-of-mass frame.

We study how environment regulates the star formation cycle of 33 Virgo Cluster satellite galaxies on 720 parsec scales. We present the first resolved star-forming main sequence for cluster galaxies, dividing the sample based on their global HI properties and comparing to a control sample of field galaxies. HI-poor cluster galaxies have reduced star formation rate (SFR) surface densities with respect to both HI-normal cluster and field galaxies (0.5 dex), suggesting that mechanisms regulating the global HI content are responsible for quenching local star formation. We demonstrate that the observed quenching in HI-poor galaxies is caused by environmental processes such as ram pressure strip** (RPS) simultaneously reducing molecular gas surface density and star formation efficiency (SFE), compared to regions in HI-normal systems (by 0.38 and 0.22 dex, respectively). We observe systematically elevated SFRs that are driven by increased molecular gas surface densities at fixed stellar mass surface density in the outskirts of early-stage RPS galaxies, while SFE remains unchanged with respect to the field sample. We quantify how RPS and starvation affect the star formation cycle of inner and outer galaxy discs as they are processed by the cluster. We show both are effective quenching mechanisms with the key difference being that RPS acts upon the galaxy outskirts while starvation regulates the star formation cycle throughout disc, including within the truncation radius. For both processes, the quenching is caused by a simultaneous reduction in molecular gas surface densities and SFE at fixed stellar mass surface density.

No significant signals are observed in the non-resonant $μ^+μ^-$ modes, and upper limits of $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow \overline{D}^0 μ^+ μ^-) < 5.1 \times 10^{-8}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \rightarrow D_s^+ μ^+ μ^-) < 3.2 \times 10^{-8}$, $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow \overline{D}^0 μ^+ μ^-) < 1.6 \times 10^{-7}$ and $f_c/f_u \cdot \mathcal{B}(B_c^+ \rightarrow D_s^+ μ^+ μ^-) < 9.6 \times 10^{-8}$ are set at the 95\% confidence level, where $f_c$ and $f_u$ are the fragmentation fractions of a $B$ meson with a $c$ and $u$ quark respectively in proton-proton collisions. Each result is either the first such measurement or an improvement by three orders of magnitude on an existing limit. Separate upper limits are calculated when the muon pair originates from a $J/ψ\rightarrow μ^+ μ^-$ decay. The branching fraction of $B_c^+ \rightarrow D_s^+ J/ψ$ multiplied by the fragmentation-fraction ratio is measured to be $f_c/f_u \cdot \mathcal{B}(B_c^+ \rightarrow D_s^+ J/ψ) = (1.63 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-5}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

More precise measurements of galaxy clustering will be provided by the next generation of galaxy surveys such as DESI, WALLABY and SKA. To utilize this information to improve our understanding of the Universe, we need to accurately model the distribution of galaxies in their host dark matter halos. In this work we present a new galaxy number density profile of haloes, which makes predictions for the positions of galaxies in the host halo, different to the widely adopted Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile, since galaxies tend to be found more in the outskirts of halos (nearer the virial radius) than an NFW profile. The parameterised galaxy number density profile model of haloes is fit and tested using the DARKSAGE semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. We find that our galaxy number density profile model of haloes can accurately reproduce the halo occupation distribution and galaxy two-point correlation function of the DARKSAGE simulation. We also derive the analytic expressions for the circular velocity and gravitational potential energy for this profile model. We use the SDSS DR10 galaxy group catalogue to validate this galaxy number density profile model of haloes. Compared to the NFW profile, we find that our model more accurately predicts the positions of galaxies in their host halo and the galaxy two-point correlation function.

Using a sample of approximately 349 000 $B^{0}_{s}$ signal decays with an invariant $K^{+}K^{-}$ mass in the vicinity of the $φ(1020)$ resonance, the $CP$-violating phase $φ_s$ is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the $B^0_s$-$\bar{B}^0_s$ system, $ΔΓ_s$, and the difference of the average $B^0_s$ and $B^0$ meson decay widths, $Γ_s-Γ_d$. The values obtained are $φ_s = \ -0.039 \pm 0.022 \pm 0.006$ rad, $ΔΓ_s = 0.0845 \pm 0.0044 \pm 0.0024 $ ps$^{-1}$ and $Γ_s-Γ_d = -0.0056 ^{+ 0.0013}_{-0.0015} \pm 0.0014$ ps$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard Model and with the previous LHCb analyses of this decay. These results are combined with previous independent LHCb measurements. The phase $φ_s$ is also measured independently for each polarization state of the $K^{+}K^{-}$ system and shows no evidence for polarization dependence.

This paper reports the observation of the decays $B_{(s)}^{0}\to D_{s1}(2536)^{\mp}K^{\pm}$ using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. The branching fractions of these decays are measured relative to the normalisation channel $B^{0}\to \overline{D}^{0}K^{+}K^{-}$. The $D_{s1}(2536)^{-}$ meson is reconstructed in the $\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-}$ decay channel and the products of branching fractions are measured to be $$\mathcal{B}(B_{s}^{0}\to D_{s1}(2536)^{\mp}K^{\pm})\times\mathcal{B}(D_{s1}(2536)^{-}\to\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-})=(2.49\pm0.11\pm0.12\pm0.25\pm0.06)\times 10^{-5}, $$ $$\mathcal{B}(B^{0}\to D_{s1}(2536)^{\mp}K^{\pm})\times\mathcal{B}(D_{s1}(2536)^{-}\to\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-}) = (0.510\pm0.021\pm0.036\pm0.050)\times 10^{-5}.$$ The first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third arises from the uncertainty of the branching fraction of the $B^{0}\to \overline{D}^{0}K^{+}K^{-}$ normalisation channel. The last uncertainty in the $B_{s}^{0}$ result is due to the limited knowledge of the fragmentation fraction ratio, $f_{s}/f_{d}$. The significance for the $B_{s}^{0}$ and $B^{0}$ signals is larger than $10\,σ$. The ratio of the helicity amplitudes which governs the angular distribution of the $D_{s1}(2536)^{-}\to\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-}$ decay is determined from the data. The ratio of the $S$- and $D$-wave amplitudes is found to be $1.11\pm0.15\pm 0.06$ and its phase $0.70\pm0.09\pm 0.04$ rad, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

The decay $Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-$ is observed using a proton-proton collision data sample collected at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5 fb$^{-1}$. This process is mediated by the $s\to u\bar{u}d$ quark-level transition, where the $b$ quark in the $Ξ_b^-$ baryon is a spectator in the decay. Averaging the results obtained using the two $Λ_b^0$ decay modes, $Λ_b^0\toΛ_c^+π^-$ and $Λ_b^0\toΛ_c^+π^-π^+π^-$, the relative production ratio is measured to be $(f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0}){\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-)=(7.3\pm0.8\pm0.6)\times10^{-4}$. Here the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, and $f_{Ξ_b^-}(f_{Λ_b^0})$ is the fragmentation fraction for a $b$ quark into a $Ξ_b^-$ ($Λ_b^0$) baryon. Using an independent measurement of $f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0}$, the branching fraction ${\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-)=(0.89\pm0.10\pm0.07\pm0.29)\%$ is obtained, where the last uncertainty is due to the assumed SU(3) flavor symmetry in the determination of $f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0}$.

We use the EAGLE (Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments) and IllustrisTNG (The Next Generation) cosmological simulations to investigate the properties of the baryonic specific angular momentum (j), baryonic mass (M) and atomic gas fraction ($f_{\rm{atm}}$) plane for nearby galaxies. We find EAGLE and TNG to be in excellent agreement with each other. These simulations are also consistent with the results obtained with xGASS (eXtended GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey) for gas fractions greater than 0.01. This implies that the disagreements previously identified between xGASS and predictions from simple analytical disc stability arguments also holds true for EAGLE and TNG. For lower gas fraction (the regime currently unconstrained by observations), both simulations deviate from the plane but still maintain good agreement with each other. Despite the challenges posed by resolution limits at low gas fractions, our findings suggest a potential disconnect between angular momentum and gas fraction in the gas-poor regime, implying that not all gas-poor galaxies have low specific angular momentum.

This paper presents the first measurement of $\mathcal{A}^{CP}(B^- \rightarrow D^{*-}_s D^0)$ and $\mathcal{A}^{CP}(B^- \rightarrow D^{-}_s D^{*0})$, and the most precise measurement of the other five $CP$ asymmetries. There is no evidence of $CP$ violation in any of the analysed decays. Additionally, two ratios between branching fractions of selected decays are measured.

Correlations of same-sign charged particles are analysed using proton-lead collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.06 nb-1. Bose-Einstein correlations are observed in the form of an enhancement of pair production for same-sign charged pions with a small four-momentum difference squared. The dependence of the correlation radius and the intercept parameter on the reconstructed charged-particle multiplicity is investigated. The measured correlation radii scale linearly with the cube root of the reconstructed charged-particle multiplicity, being compatible with predictions of hydrodynamic models on the collision system evolution.

The measurement is performed for $J/ψ$ ($\mathitΥ$) mesons with a transverse momentum $p_{\mathrm{T}}<10\,(30)\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$ in the rapidity range $2.0<y<4.5$. In this kinematic range, the cross-section of the associated production of prompt $J/ψ$ and $\mathitΥ(1S)$ mesons is measured to be $133 \pm 22 \pm 7 \pm 3 \, \mathrm{pb}$, with a significance of $7.9\,σ$, and that of prompt $J/ψ$ and $\mathitΥ(2S)$ mesons to be $76\pm 21 \pm 4 \pm 7 \, \mathrm{pb}$, with a significance of $4.9\,σ$. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to uncertainties on the used branching fractions. This is the first observation of the associated production of $J/ψ$ and $\mathitΥ(1S)$ in proton-proton collisions. Differential cross-sections are measured as functions of variables that are sensitive to kinematic correlations between the $J/ψ$ and $\mathitΥ(1S)$ mesons. The effective cross-sections of the associated production of prompt $J/ψ$ and $\mathitΥ$ mesons are obtained and found to be compatible with measurements using other particle productions.

We analyze cold-gas distributions in Virgo cluster galaxies using resolved CO(2-1) (tracing molecular hydrogen, H2) and HI observations from the Virgo Environment Traced In CO (VERTICO) and the VLA Imaging of Virgo in Atomic Gas (VIVA) surveys. From a theoretical perspective, it is expected that environmental processes in clusters will have a stronger influence on diffuse atomic gas compared to the relatively dense molecular gas component, and that these environmental perturbations can compress the cold interstellar medium in cluster galaxies leading to elevated star formation. In this work we observationally test these predictions for star-forming satellite galaxies within the Virgo cluster. We divide our Virgo galaxy sample into HI-normal, HI-tailed, and HI-truncated classes and show, unsurprisingly, that the HI-tailed galaxies have the largest quantitative HI asymmetries. We also compare to a control sample of non-cluster galaxies and find that Virgo galaxies, on average, have HI asymmetries that are 40 +/- 10 per cent larger than the control. There is less separation between control, HI-normal, HI-tailed, and HI-truncated galaxies in terms of H2 asymmetries, and on average, Virgo galaxies have H2 asymmetries that are only marginally (20 +/- 10 per cent) larger than the control sample. We find a weak correlation between HI and H2 asymmetries over our entire sample, but a stronger correlation for those specific galaxies being strongly impacted by environmental perturbations. Finally, we divide the discs of the HI-tailed Virgo galaxies into a leading half and trailing half according to the observed tail direction. We find evidence for excess molecular gas mass on the leading halves of the disc. This excess molecular gas on the leading half is accompanied by an excess in star formation rate such that the depletion time is, on average, unchanged.

We determine the atomic hydrogen (HI) to halo mass relation (HIHM) using Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey HI data at the location of optically selected groups from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. We make direct HI detections for 37 GAMA groups. Using HI group spectral stacking of 345 groups, we study the group HI content as function of halo mass across a halo mass range of $10^{11} - 10^{14.7}\text{ M}_\odot$. We also correct our results for Eddington bias. We find that the group HI mass generally rises as a function of halo mass from $1.3\%$ of the halo mass at $10^{11.6} \text{M}_\odot$ to $0.4\%$ at $10^{13.7} \text{M}_\odot$ with some indication of flattening towards the high-mass end. Despite the differences in optical survey limits, group catalogues, and halo mass estimation methods, our results are consistent with previous group HI-stacking studies. Our results are also consistent with mock observations from SHARK and IllustrisTNG.

The LHCb upgrade represents a major change of the experiment. The detectors have been almost completely renewed to allow running at an instantaneous luminosity five times larger than that of the previous running periods. Readout of all detectors into an all-software trigger is central to the new design, facilitating the reconstruction of events at the maximum LHC interaction rate, and their selection in real time. The experiment's tracking system has been completely upgraded with a new pixel vertex detector, a silicon tracker upstream of the dipole magnet and three scintillating fibre tracking stations downstream of the magnet. The whole photon detection system of the RICH detectors has been renewed and the readout electronics of the calorimeter and muon systems have been fully overhauled. The first stage of the all-software trigger is implemented on a GPU farm. The output of the trigger provides a combination of totally reconstructed physics objects, such as tracks and vertices, ready for final analysis, and of entire events which need further offline reprocessing. This scheme required a complete revision of the computing model and rewriting of the experiment's software.

The measured ratio is $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^{*-}τ^+ν_τ)/\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^{*-}π^+π^-π^+) = 1.79 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.11$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is related to systematic effects. Using established branching fractions for the $B^0 \to D^{*-}π^+π^-π^+$ and $B^0 \to D^{*-}μ^+ν_μ$ modes, the lepton universality test, $\mathcal{R}(D^{*-}) \equiv \mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^{*-}τ^+ν_τ)/\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^{*-}μ^+ν_μ)$ is calculated, $$ \mathcal{R}(D^{*-}) = 0.260 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.016 \pm 0.012\, , $$ where the third uncertainty is due to the uncertainties on the external branching fractions. This result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction and with previous measurements.

The $K^0_SK π$ invariant mass spectra from both decay modes reveal a rich content of charmonium resonances. New precise measurements of the $η_c$ and $η_c(2S)$ resonance parameters are performed and branching fraction measurements are obtained for $B^+$ decays to $η_c$, $J/ψ$, $η_c(2S)$ and $χ_{c1}$ resonances. In particular, the first observation and branching fraction measurement of $B^+ \to χ_{c0} K^0 π^+$ is reported as well as first measurements of the $B^+\to K^0K^+K^-π^+$ and $B^+\to K^0K^+K^+π^-$ branching fractions. Dalitz plot analyses of $η_c \to K^0_SKπ$ and $η_c(2S) \to K^0_SKπ$ decays are performed. A new measurement of the amplitude and phase of the $K π$ $S$-wave as functions of the $K π$ mass is performed, together with measurements of the $K^*_0(1430)$, $K^*_0(1950)$ and $a_0(1700)$ parameters. Finally, the branching fractions of $χ_{c1}$ decays to $K^*$ resonances are also measured.

A flavor-tagged time-dependent angular analysis of the decay $B_s^{0}\rightarrowφφ$ is performed using $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, the center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb^{-1}. The $\it{CP}$-violating phase and direct $\it{CP}$-violation parameter are measured to be $φ_{s\bar{s}s} = -0.042 \pm 0.075 \pm 0.009 $ rad and $|λ|=1.004\pm 0.030 \pm 0.009 $, respectively, assuming the same values for all polarization states of the $φφ$ system. In these results, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These parameters are also determined separately for each polarization state, showing no evidence for polarization dependence. The results are combined with previous LHCb measurements using $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding $φ_{s\bar{s}s} = -0.074 \pm 0.069 $ rad and $|λ|=1.009 \pm 0.030$. This is the most precise study of time-dependent $\it{CP} $ violation in a penguin-dominated $B$ meson decay. The results are consistent with $\it{CP} $ symmetry and with the Standard Model predictions.

The analysis uses a sample of beauty mesons produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$. The signal signature corresponds to simultaneous peaks in the $μ^+μ^-$ and $π^-μ^+μ^-$ invariant masses. No evidence for an excess of events over background is observed and an upper limit is set on the branching fraction of the decay at ${\cal B}(D^{*}(2007)^0\toμ^+μ^-) < 2.6\times 10^{-8}$ at $90\%$ confidence level. This is the first limit on the branching fraction of $D^{*}(2007)^0\toμ^+μ^-$ decays and the most stringent limit on $D^{*}(2007)^0$ decays to leptonic final states. The analysis is the first search for a rare charm-meson decay exploiting production via beauty decays.

The quenching of cluster satellite galaxies is inextricably linked to the suppression of their cold interstellar medium (ISM) by environmental mechanisms. While the removal of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) at large radii is well studied, how the environment impacts the remaining gas in the centres of galaxies, which are dominated by molecular gas, is less clear. Using new observations from the Virgo Environment traced in CO survey (VERTICO) and archival HI data, we study the HI and molecular gas within the optical discs of Virgo cluster galaxies on 1.2-kpc scales with spatially resolved scaling relations between stellar ($Σ_{\star}$), HI ($Σ_\mathrm{HI}$), and molecular gas ($Σ_\mathrm{mol}$) surface densities. Adopting HI deficiency as a measure of environmental impact, we find evidence that, in addition to removing the HI at large radii, the cluster processes also lower the average $Σ_\mathrm{HI}$ of the remaining gas even in the central 1.2 kpc. The impact on molecular gas is comparatively weaker than on the HI, and we show that the lower $Σ_\mathrm{mol}$ gas is removed first. In the most HI-deficient galaxies, however, we find evidence that environmental processes reduce the typical $Σ_\mathrm{mol}$ of the remaining gas by nearly a factor of 3. We find no evidence for environment-driven elevation of $Σ_\mathrm{HI}$ or $Σ_\mathrm{mol}$ in HI-deficient galaxies. Using the ratio of $Σ_\mathrm{mol}$-to-$Σ_\mathrm{HI}$ in individual regions, we show that changes in the ISM physical conditions, estimated using the total gas surface density and midplane hydrostatic pressure, cannot explain the observed reduction in molecular gas content. Instead, we suggest that direct strip** of the molecular gas is required to explain our results.

While an astronomer's job is typically to look out from Earth, the seriousness of the climate crisis has meant a shift in many astronomers' focus. Astronomers are starting to consider how our resource requirements may contribute to this crisis and how we may better conduct our research in a more environmentally sustainable fashion. Astronomers for Planet Earth is an international organisation (more than 1,700 members from over 70 countries as of November 2022) that seeks to answer the call for sustainability to be at the heart of astronomers' practices. In this article, we review the organisation's history, summarising the proactive, collaborative efforts and research into astronomy sustainability conducted by its members. We update the state of affairs with respect to the carbon footprint of astronomy research, noting an improvement in renewable energy powering supercomputing facilities in Australia, reducing that component of our footprint by a factor of 2--3. We discuss how, despite accelerated changes made throughout the pandemic, we still must address the format of our meetings. Using recent annual meetings of the Australian and European astronomical societies as examples, we demonstrate that the more online-focussed a meeting is, the greater its attendance and the lower its emissions.

We employ the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulation to uncover the relationship between cluster environment and $\rm H_2$ content of star-forming galaxies at redshifts spanning $0\leq z\leq 1$. To do so, we divide the star-forming sample into those that are bound to clusters and those that are not. We find that, at any given redshift, the galaxies in clusters generally have less $\rm H_2$ than their non-cluster counterparts with the same stellar mass (corresponding to an offset of $\lesssim 0.5$ dex), but this offset varies with stellar mass and is virtually absent at $M_\star\lesssim10^{9.3}~{\rm M}_\odot$. The $\rm H_2$ deficit in star-forming cluster galaxies can be traced back to a decline in their $\rm H_2$ content that commenced after first infall into a cluster, which occurred later than a typical cluster galaxy. Evolution of the full cluster population after infall is generally consistent with `slow-then-rapid' quenching, but galaxies with $M_\star\lesssim 10^{9.5}~{\rm M}_\odot$ exhibit rapid quenching. Unlike most cluster galaxies, star-forming ones were not pre-processed in groups prior to being accreted by clusters. For both of these cluster samples, the star formation efficiency remained oblivious to the infall. We track the particles associated with star-forming cluster galaxies and attribute the drop in $\rm H_2$ mass after infall to poor replenishment, depletion due to star formation, and strip** of $\rm H_2$ in cluster environments. These results provide predictions for future surveys, along with support and theoretical insights for existing molecular gas observations that suggest there is less $\rm H_2$ in cluster galaxies.

A simultaneous analysis of the $B^+\to K^+\ell^+\ell^-$ and $B^0\to K^{*0}\ell^+\ell^-$ decays is performed to test muon-electron universality in two ranges of the square of the dilepton invariant mass, $q^2$. The measurement uses a sample of beauty meson decays produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9$ $\text{fb}^{-1}$. A sequence of multivariate selections and strict particle identification requirements produce a higher signal purity and a better statistical sensitivity per unit luminosity than previous LHCb lepton universality tests using the same decay modes. Residual backgrounds due to misidentified hadronic decays are studied using data and included in the fit model. Each of the four lepton universality measurements reported is either the first in the given $q^2$ interval or supersedes previous LHCb measurements. The results are compatible with the predictions of the Standard Model.

The analysis is based on data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13$\,\rm{TeV}$. The full data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9$\,\rm{fb^{-1}}$. Two new resonant states with masses of $2.908\pm0.011\pm0.020\,\rm{GeV}$ and widths of $0.136\pm0.023\pm0.011\,\rm{GeV}$ are observed, which decay to $D^+_sπ^+$ and $D^+_sπ^-$ respectively. The former state indicates the first observation of a doubly charged open-charm tetraquark state with minimal quark content $[c\bar{s}u\bar{d}]$, and the latter state is a neutral tetraquark composed of $[c\bar{s}\bar{u}d]$ quarks. Both states are found to have spin-parity $0^+$, and their resonant parameters are consistent with each other, which suggests that they belong to an isospin triplet.

In this VERTICO science paper we aim to study how the star formation process depends on galactic environment and gravitational interactions in the context of galaxy evolution. We explore the scaling relation between the star formation rate (SFR) surface density and the molecular gas surface density, also known as the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation, in a subsample of Virgo cluster spiral galaxies. We use new ACA and TP observations from the VERTICO-ALMA Large Program at 720pc resolution to resolve the molecular gas content, as traced by the 12CO(2-1) transition, across the disks of 37 spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster. In combination with archival observations, we estimate the parameters of the KS relation for the entire ensemble of galaxies, and within individual galaxies. We find the KS slope for the entire population to be N=0.97+/-0.07, with a characteristic molecular gas depletion time of 1.86Gyr for our full sample, in agreement with previous work in isolated star-forming galaxies. In individual galaxies, we find KS slopes ranging between 0.69 and 1.40, and typical star formation efficiencies (SFE) that can vary from galaxy to galaxy by a factor of ~4. These galaxy-to-galaxy variations account for ~0.20dex in scatter in the ensemble KS relation, which is characterized by a 0.42dex scatter. We find that the HI-deficient galaxies in the Virgo cluster show a steeper resolved KS relation and lower molecular gas efficiencies than HI-normal cluster galaxies. While the molecular gas content in Virgo cluster galaxies appears to behave similarly to that in isolated galaxies, our VERTICO sample shows that cluster environments play a key role in regulating star formation. The environmental mechanisms affecting the HI galaxy content also have a direct impact in the SFE of molecular gas in cluster galaxies, leading to longer depletion times in HI-deficient members.

The production of $D^0$ mesons is studied with a beam of 2.5 TeV protons colliding on a gaseous neon target at rest, corresponding to a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 68.5 GeV. The sum of the $D^0$ and ${\overline D^0}$ production cross-section in $p$Ne collisions in the centre-of-mass rapidity range $y^{\star}\in [-2.29, 0]$ is found to be $σ_{D^{0}}^{y^\star \in [-2.29, 0]} = 48.2 \pm 0.3 \pm 4.5 \,μ\textrm{b/nucleon}$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The $D^0-{\overline D^0}$ production asymmetry is also evaluated and suggests a trend towards negative values at large negative $y^{\star}$. The considered models do not account precisely for all the features observed in the LHCb data, but theoretical predictions including 1$\%$ intrinsic charm and 10$\%$ recombination contributions better describe the data than the other models considered.

This measurement fills an experimental gap in the knowledge of the family of Cabibbo$-$favoured $\bar{b} \rightarrow \bar{c} c \bar{s}$ transitions and opens the path for unique studies of spectroscopy in future.

A near-threshold peaking structure, referred to as $X(3960)$, is observed in the $D_s^+ D_s^-$ invariant-mass spectrum with significance greater than 12 standard deviations. The mass, width and the quantum numbers of the structure are measured to be $3956\pm5\pm10$ MeV, $43\pm13\pm8$ MeV and $J^{PC}=0^{++}$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The properties of the new structure are consistent with recent theoretical predictions for a state composed of $c\bar{c}s\bar{s}$ quarks. Evidence for an additional structure is found around 4140 MeV in the $D_s^+ D_s^-$ invariant mass, which might be caused either by a new resonance with the $0^{++}$ assignment or by a $J/ψφ\leftrightarrow D_s^+ D_s^-$ coupled-channel effect.

The first observation of the $B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-}$ decay and the measurement of its branching ratio relative to the $B^0\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-}$ decay are presented. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $9\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and $13\,\text{TeV}$ between 2011 and 2018. The decay is observed with more than $10$ standard deviations and the time-integrated ratio of branching fractions is determined to be \begin{align*}
\frac{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-})}{\mathcal{B}(B^0\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-})} = 0.269 \pm 0.032 \pm 0.011 \pm 0.008\, , \end{align*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third due to the uncertainty of the fragmentation fraction ratio $f_s/f_d$. The $B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-}$ branching fraction is calculated to be \begin{align*}
\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-}) = (2.15 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.16)\times 10^{-4} \,, \end{align*} where the fourth uncertainty is due to the $B^0\!\to D^{*+}D^{*-}$branching fraction. These results are calculated using the average $B^0_s$ meson lifetime in simulation. Correction factors are reported for scenarios where either a purely heavy or a purely light $B^0_s$ eigenstate is considered.

We measure the molecular-to-atomic gas ratio, $R_{\rm mol}$, and the star formation rate (SFR) per unit molecular gas mass, SFE$_{\rm mol}$, in 38 nearby galaxies selected from the Virgo Environment Traced in CO (VERTICO) survey. We determine their scale-lengths for the molecular and stellar components and find a roughly 3:5 ratio between them compared to $\sim$1:1 in field galaxies, indicating that the CO emission is more centrally concentrated than the stars. We compute $R_{\rm mol}$ as a function of different physical quantities. While the spatially-resolved $R_{\rm mol}$ on average decreases with increasing radius, we find that the mean molecular-to-atomic gas ratio within the stellar effective radius $R_{\rm e}$, $R_{\rm mol}(r<R_{\rm e})$, shows a systematic increase with the level of H$_{\rm I}$, truncation and/or asymmetry (H$_{\rm I}$ perturbation). Analysis of the molecular- and the atomic-to-stellar mass ratios within $R_{\rm e}$, $R^{\rm mol}_{\star}(r<R_{\rm e})$ and $R^{\rm atom}_{\star}(r<R_{\rm e})$, shows that VERTICO galaxies have increasingly lower $R^{\rm atom}_{\star}(r<R_{\rm e})$ for larger levels of H$_{\rm I}$perturbation (compared to field galaxies matched in stellar mass), but no significant change in $R^{\rm mol}_{\star}(r<R_{\rm e})$. We also measure a clear systematic decrease of the SFE$_{\rm mol}$ within $R_{\rm e}$, SFE$_{\rm mol}(r<R_{\rm e})$, with increasingly perturbed H$_{\rm I}$. Therefore, compared to galaxies from the field, VERTICO galaxies are more compact in CO emission in relation to their stellar distribution, but increasingly perturbed atomic gas increases their $R_{\rm mol}$ and decreases the efficiency with which their molecular gas forms stars. The next generation of galaxy surveys will provide more precise measurements of galaxy clustering than have previously been possible. The 21-cm radio signals that are emitted from neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) gas will be detected by large-area radio surveys such as WALLABY and the SKA, and deliver galaxy positions and velocities that can be used to measure galaxy clustering statistics. But, to harness this information to improve our cosmological understanding, and learn about the physics of dark matter and dark energy, we need to accurately model the manner in which galaxies detected in HI trace the underlying matter distribution of the Universe. For this purpose, we develop a new HI-based Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) model, which makes predictions for the number of galaxies present in dark matter halos conditional on their HI mass. The parameterised HOD model is fit and validated using the Dark Sage semi-analytic model, where we show that the HOD parameters can be modelled by simple linear and quadratic functions of HI mass. However, we also find that the clustering predicted by the HOD depends sensitively on the radial distributions of the HI galaxies within their host dark matter halos, which does not follow the NFW profile in the Dark Sage simulation. As such, this work enables -- for the first time -- a simple prescription for placing galaxies of different HI mass within dark matter halos in a way that is able to reproduce the HI mass-dependent galaxy clustering and HI mass function simultaneously and without requiring knowledge of the optical properties of the galaxies. Further efforts are required to demonstrate that this model can be used to produce large ensembles of mock galaxy catalogues for upcoming surveys.

We present a rest-frame optical morphological analysis of galaxies observed with the NIRCam imager on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) as part of the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science program. We select 388 sources at redshifts \(0.8 < z < 5.4\) and use the seven 0.9--5\micron\ NIRCam filters to generate rest-frame $gri$ composite color images, and conduct visual morphological classification. Compared to HST-based work we find a higher incidence of disks and bulges than expected at $z>1.5$, revealed by rest frame optical imaging. We detect 123 clear disks (58 at $z>1.5$) of which 76 have bulges. No evolution of bulge fraction with redshift is evident: 61\% at \(z<2\) (\(N=110\)) versus 60\% at \(z\geq2\) (\(N=13\)). A stellar mass dependence is evident, with bulges visible in 80\% of all disk galaxies with mass \(> 10^{9.5}\, {\rm M}_{\odot}\) (\(N=41\)) but only 52\% at \(M < 10^{9.5}\, {\rm M}_{\odot}\) (\(N=82\)). We supplement visual morphologies with non-parametric measurements of Gini and Asymmetry coefficients in the rest-frame $i$-band. Our sources are more asymmetric than local galaxies, with slightly higher Gini values. When compared to high-z rest-frame ultraviolet measurements with Hubble Space Telescope, JWST shows more regular morphological types such as disks, bulges and spiral arms at $z>1.5$, with smoother (i.e. lower Gini) and more symmetrical light distributions.

These results constitute the world's most stringent limits to date, with the limit on the decay $B_s^0 \to φμ^\pm e^\mp$ the first being set. In addition, limits are reported for scalar and left-handed lepton-flavour violating New Physics scenarios.

Using the EAGLE suite of simulations, we demonstrate that both cold gas strip** {\it and} starvation of gas inflow play an important role in quenching satellite galaxies across a range of stellar and halo masses, $M_{\star}$ and $M_{200}$. By quantifying the balance between gas inflows, outflows, and star formation rates, we show that even at $z=2$, only $\approx30\%$ of satellite galaxies are able to maintain equilibrium or grow their reservoir of cool gas - compared to $\approx50\%$ of central galaxies at this redshift. We find that the number of orbits completed by a satellite is a very good predictor of its quenching, even more so than the time since infall. On average, we show that intermediate-mass satellites with $M_{\star}$ between $10^{9}{\rm M}_{\odot}-10^{10}{\rm M}_{\odot}$ will be quenched at first pericenter in massive group environments, $M_{200}>10^{13.5}{\rm M}_{\odot}$; and will be quenched at second pericenter in less massive group environments, $M_{200}<10^{13.5}{\rm M}_{\odot}$. On average, more massive satellites ($M_{\star}>10^{10}{\rm M}_{\odot}$) experience longer depletion time-scales, being quenched between first and second pericenters in massive groups; while in smaller group environments, just $\approx30\%$ will be quenched even after two orbits. Our results suggest that while starvation alone may be enough to slowly quench satellite galaxies, direct gas strip**, particularly at pericenters, is required to produce the short quenching time-scales exhibited in the simulation.

In this VERTICO early science paper we explore in detail how environmental mechanisms, identified in HI, affect the resolved properties of molecular gas reservoirs in cluster galaxies. The molecular gas is probed using ALMA ACA (+TP) observations of 12CO(2-1) in 51 spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster (of which 49 are detected), all of which are included in the VIVA HI survey. The sample spans a stellar mass range of 9 < log M*/Msol < 11. We study molecular gas radial profiles, isodensity radii, and surface densities as a function of galaxy HI deficiency and morphology. There is a weak correlation between global HI and H2 deficiencies, and resolved properties of molecular gas correlate with HI deficiency: galaxies that have large HI deficiencies have relatively steep and truncated molecular gas radial profiles, which is due to the removal of low-surface density molecular gas on the outskirts. Therefore, while the environmental mechanisms observed in HI also affect molecular gas reservoirs, there is only a moderate reduction of the total amount of molecular gas.
