We report on the first successful growth of single crystals of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo$_3$Al$_2$C obtained by means of a cubic-anvil, high-pressure and high-temperature technique. Composition, structure, and normal-state transport properties of the crystals were studied by means of X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility and resistivity measurements as a function of temperature. Variations in critical temperature ($T_c$) between 8.6 and 9.3 K were observed, probably due to the slightly different carbon stoichiometry of the samples. Single-crystal X-ray refinement confirmed the high structural perfection of the grown crystals. Remarkably, the refined Flack parameter values for all the measured crystals using a $P4_132$ space-group model were consistently close to either 0 or 1, hence indicating that the considered crystals belong to two enantiomorphic space groups, $P4_132$ and $P4_332$. An anomaly in the resistivity is observed at about 130 K, most likely associated with the onset of a charge-density-wave phase. The superconducting properties (and in particular the symmetry, the amplitude and the temperature dependence of the superconducting gap) were studied by using - for the first time in this compound - point contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy. The results confirm that Mo$_3$Al$_2$C is a moderately strongly-coupled superconductor with $2Δ/k_BT_c \simeq 4$ and unambiguously prove that the order parameter has an s-wave symmetry despite the asymmetric spin-orbit coupling arising from the lack of inversion symmetry.

We present theory of dc Josephson effect in contacts between Fe-based and spin-singlet $s$-wave superconductors. The method is based on the calculation of temperature Green's function in the junction within the tight-binding model. We calculate the phase dependencies of the Josephson current for different orientations of the junction relative to the crystallographic axes of Fe-based superconductor. Further, we consider the dependence of the Josephson current on the thickness of an insulating layer and on temperature. Experimental data for PbIn/Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(FeAs)$_2$ point-contact Josephson junctions are consistent with theoretical predictions for $s_{\pm}$ symmetry of an order parameter in this material. The proposed method can be further applied to calculations of the dc Josephson current in contacts with other new unconventional multiorbital superconductors, such as $Sr_2RuO_4$ and superconducting topological insulator $Cu_xBi_2Se_3$.

The PCAR spectra are analyzed within the two-band 3D version of the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model for Andreev reflection we recently developed, and that makes use of an analytical expression for the Fermi surface that mimics the one calculated within the density-functional theory (DFT). The spectra in Ca(Fe_{0.94}Co_{0.06})2As2 unambiguously demonstrate the presence of nodes or zeros in the small gap. In Ba(Fe_{0.92}Co_{0.08})2As2, the ab-plane spectra in single crystals can be fitted by assuming two nodeless gaps, but this model fails to fit the c-axis ones in epitaxial films. All these results are discussed in comparison with recent theoretical predictions about the occurrence of accidental 3D nodes and the presence of "hot spots" in the gaps of 122 compounds.

The results show that the SmFe_{1-x}Ru_{x}AsO_{0.85}F_{0.15} system keeps a multigap character at least up to x=0.50, and that the gap amplitudes Delta_1 and Delta_2 scale almost linearly with the local critical temperature TcA. The gap ratios 2Delta_i/(kB Tc) remain approximately constant only as long as Tc > 30 K, but increase dramatically when Tc decreases further. This trend seems to be common to many Fe-based superconductors, irrespective of their family. Based on first-principle calculations of the bandstructure and of the density of states projected on the different bands, we show that this trend, as well as the Tc dependence of the gaps and the reduction of Tc upon Ru do**, can be explained within an effective three-band Eliashberg model as being due to a suppression of the superfluid density at finite temperature that, in turns, modifies the temperature dependence of the characteristic spin-fluctuation energy.

A deep understanding of the character of superconductivity in the recently discovered Fe-based oxypnictides ReFeAsO1-xFx (Re = rare-earth) necessarily requires the determination of the number of the gaps and their symmetry in k space, which are fundamental ingredients of any model for the pairing mechanism in these new superconductors. In the present paper, we show that point-contact Andreev-reflection experiments performed on LaFeAsO1-xFx (La-1111) polycrystals with Tc ~ 27 K and SmFeAsO0.8F0.2 (Sm-1111) ones with Tc ~ 53 K gave differential conductance curves exhibiting two peaks at low bias and two additional structures (peaks or shoulders) at higher bias, an experimental situation quite similar to that observed by the same technique in pure and doped MgB2. The single-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model is totally unable to properly fit the conductance curves, while the two-gap one accounts remarkably well for the shape of the whole experimental dI/dV vs. V curves. These results give direct evidence of two nodeless gaps in the superconducting state of ReFeAsO1-xFx (Re = La, Sm): a small gap, Delta1, smaller than the BCS value (2Delta1/kBTc ~ 2.2 - 3.2) and a much larger gap Delta2 which gives a ratio 2Delta2/kBTc ~ 6.5 - 9. In Sm-1111 both gaps close at the same temperature, very similar to the bulk Tc, and follow a BCS-like behaviour, while in La-1111 the situation is more complex, the temperature dependence of the gaps showing remarkable deviations from the BCS behaviour at T close to Tc. The normal-state conductance reproducibly shows an unusual, but different, shape in La-1111 and Sm-1111 with a depression or a hump at zero bias, respectively. These structures survive up to T* ~ 140 K, close to the temperatures at which structural and magnetic transitions occur in the parent, undoped compound.

The nature and value of the order parameters (OPs) in the superconducting Fe-based oxypnictides REFeAsO_(1-x)F_x (RE = rare earth) are a matter of intense debate, also connected to the pairing mechanism which is probably unconventional. Point-contact Andreev-reflection experiments on LaFeAsO_(1-x)F_x gave us direct evidence of three energy scales in the superconducting state: a nodeless superconducting OP, Delta1 = 2.8-4.6 meV, which scales with the local Tc of the contact; a larger unconventional OP that gives conductance peaks at 9.8-12 meV, apparently closes below Tc and decreases on increasing the Tc of the contact; a pseudogaplike feature (i.e. a depression in the conductance around zero bias), that survives in the normal state up to T* ~ 140 K (close to the Neel temperature of the undoped compound), which we associate to antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations (AF SF) coexisting with superconductivity. These findings point toward a complex, unconventional nature of superconductivity in LaFeAsO_(1-x)F_x.

We present new results of point-contact Andreev-reflection (PCAR) spectroscopy in single-phase Mg_{1-x}Al_{x}B_{2} single crystals with x up to 0.32. Fitting the conductance curves of our point contacts with the two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model allowed us to extract the gap amplitudes Delta_{sigma} and Delta_{pi}. The gap values agree rather well with other PCAR results in Al-doped crystals and polycrystals up to x=0.2 reported in literature, and extend them to higher Al contents. In the low-do** regime, however, we observed an increase in the small gap Delta_{pi} on increasing x (or decreasing the local critical temperature of the junctions, T_{c}^{A}) which is not as clearly found in other samples. On further decreasing T_{c}^{A} below 30 K, both the gaps decrease and, up to the highest do** level x=0.32 and down to T_{c}^{A}= 12 K, no gap merging is observed. A detailed analysis of the data within the two-band Eliashberg theory shows that this gap trend can be explained as being mainly due to the band filling and to an increase in the interband scattering which is necessary to account for the increase in Delta_{pi} at low Al contents (x < 0.1). We suggest to interpret the following decrease of Delta_{pi} for T_{c}^{A} < 30 K as being governed by the onset of inhomogeneity and disorder in the Al distribution that partly mask the intrinsic effects of do** and is not taken into account in standard theoretical approaches.

We report on recent results of point-contact spectroscopy measurements in Mg^{11}B_2 polycrystals irradiated at different neutron fluences up to 1.4 x 10^{20} cm^{-2}. The point contacts were made by putting a small drop of Ag paint -- acting as the counterelectrode -- on the cleaved surface of the samples. The gap amplitudes were extracted from the experimental conductance curves, showing Andreev-reflection features, through a two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk fit and reported as a function of the Andreev critical temperature of the junctions, TcA. The resulting Delta_sigma(TcA) and Delta_pi(TcA) curves show a clear merging of the gaps when TcA ~ 9K that perfectly confirms the findings of specific-heat measurements in the same samples. Anomalous contacts with TcA > Tc (being Tc the bulk critical temperature) were often obtained, particularly in samples irradiated at very high fluences. Their fit gave a different dependence of Delta_pi on TcA. The possible origin of these contacts is discussed in terms of local current-induced annealing and/or nanoscale inhomogeneities observed by STM in the most irradiated samples.

Single crystals of Mg1-xAlxB2 have been grown at a pressure of 30 kbar using the cubic anvil technique. Precipitation free crystals with x < 0.1 were obtained as a result of optimization of already developed MgB2 crystal growth procedure. Systematic decrease of the c-axis lattice constant with increasing Al content, when the a-axis lattice constant is practically unchanged, was observed. Variation of the critical temperature on Al content in Mg1-xAlxB2 crystals was found to be slightly different than that one observed for polycrystalline samples since, even a very small substitution of 1-2% of Al leads to the decrease of Tc by about 2-3 K. X-ray and high resolution transmission electron microscopy investigations indicate on the appearance of second precipitation phase in the crystals with x > 0.1. This is in a form of non-superconducting MgAlB4 domains in the structure of superconducting Mg1-xAlxB2 matrix. Resistivity and magnetic investigations show the slight increase of the upper critical field, Hc2, for H//c for the samples with small x, significant reduction of the Hc2 anisotropy at lower temperatures, and decrease of the residual resistance ratio value for Al substituted samples as compared to those of unsubstituted crystals. Superconducting gaps variation as a function of Al content, investigated with point contact spectroscopy for the series of the crystals with Tc in the range from 20 to 37 K, does not indicate on the merging of the gaps with decreasing Tc down to 20 K. It may be related to an appearance of the precipitation phase in the Mg1-xAlxB2 structure.

In this region, the values of the gaps Delta_{sigma} and Delta_{pi} were determined by fitting the Andreev-reflection conductance curves with a two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) model, and confirmed by the single-band BTK fit of the sigma- and pi-band conductances, separated by means of a magnetic field. At x=0.132, when T_{c}=19 K, we clearly observed for the first time the merging of the two gaps into one of amplitude Delta~3 meV.

We present the results of point-contact spectroscopy measurements in polycrystalline RuSr_2GdCu_2O_8 samples previously characterized from both the structural and the electrical point of view. AC susceptibility and resistivity measurements, as well as SEM and optical microscopy, indicate that the polycrystalline material is made up of small, weakly connected grains. Possibly because of this morphology, point-contact measurements turned out to be rather difficult. Best reproducibility of the conductance curves was achieved in point contacts obtained by pressing Au or Pt-Ir tips on the surface of the samples. The low-temperature conductance curves reproducibly show a clear zero-bias cusp that might be interpreted as due to Andreev reflection at the normal metal-superconductor interface in the case where the superconducting order parameter has a pure d-wave symmetry - even though alternative explanations cannot be ruled out. In this paper we show that these curves can indeed be fitted, in the framework of the generalised BTK model, by using pure d-wave symmetry and a gap of the order of 6 meV. Finally, we present the temperature dependence of the conductance curves from 4.2 K up to the critical temperature of the junctions.

In this paper we highlight the advantages of using point-contact spectroscopy (PCS) in multigap superconductors like MgB_2, both as a fundamental research tool and as a non-destructive diagnostic technique for the optimization of thin-film characteristics. We first present some results of crucial fundamental interest obtained by directional PCS in MgB_2 single crystals, for example the temperature dependence of the gaps and of the critical fields and the effect of a magnetic field on the gap amplitudes. Then, we show how PCS can provide useful information about the surface properties of MgB_2 thin films (e.g. Tc, gap amplitude(s), clean or dirty-limit conditions) in view of their optimization for the fabrication of tunnel and Josephson junctions for applications in superconducting electronics.

The results of the first directional point-contact measurements in MgB2 single crystals, in the presence of magnetic fields up to 9 T either parallel or perpendicular to the ab planes, are presented. By applying suitable magnetic fields, we separated the partial contributions of the sigma and pi bands to the total Andreev-reflection conductance. Their fit with the BTK model allowed a very accurate determination of the temperature dependency of the gaps (Delta_sigma and Delta_pi), that resulted in close agreement with the predictions of the two-band models for MgB2. We also obtained, for the first time with point-contact spectroscopy, the temperature dependence of the (anisotropic) upper critical field of the sigma band and of the (isotropic) upper critical field of the pi band.

We present the results of a spectroscopic study of state-of-the-art MgB2 single crystals, carried out by using a modified point-contact technique. The use of single crystals allowed us to obtain point contacts with current injection either parallel or perpendicular to the ab planes. The effect of magnetic fields up to 9 T on the conductance spectra of these contacts is here thoroughly studied, for both B parallel and perpendicular to the ab planes. The complete thermal evolution of the upper critical field of the "pi" band is determined for the first time, and quantitative information about the upper critical field of the "sigma" band and its anisotropy is obtained. Finally, by exploiting the different effect of a magnetic field applied parallel to the ab planes on the two band systems, the partial contributions of the "sigma" and "pi" bands to the total conductance are obtained separately. Fitting each of them with the standard BTK model yields a great reduction of the uncertainty on Delta_sigma and Delta_pi, whose complete temperature dependence is obtained with the greatest accuracy.

Due to the directionality of the current injection into the samples, the application of a magnetic field allowed us to separate the contributions of the sigma and pi bands to the total conductance of our point contacts. By using this technique, we were able to obtain the temperature dependency of each gap independent of the other. The consequent, strong reduction of the error on the value of the gap amplitude as function of temperature allows a stricter test of the predictions of the two-band model for MgB_2.

We obtained junctions whose conductance curves presented typical Andreev reflection features at all temperatures from 4.2 K up to T_c^A close to the bulk T_c. Their fit with the BTK-Tanaka-Kashiwaya model gives good results if a (s+d)-wave gap symmetry is used. The do** dependence of the low temperature dominant isotropic gap component Delta_{s} follows very well the T_{c} vs. x curve. These results support the separation between the superconducting (Andreev) gap and the pseudogap measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and tunneling.

We studied the voltage and temperature dependency of the dynamic conductance of normal metal-MgB2 junctions obtained either with the point-contact technique (with Au and Pt tips) or by making Ag-paint spots on the surface of high-quality single-crystal-like MgB2 samples. The fit of the conductance curves with the generalized BTK model gives evidence of pure s-wave gap symmetry. The temperature dependency of the gap, measured in Ag-paint junctions (dirty limit), follows the standard BCS curve with 2Delta/kTc = 3.3. In out-of-plane, high-pressure point contacts we obtained almost ideal Andreev reflection characteristics showing a single small s-wave gap Delta = 2.6 +/- 0.2 (clean limit). These results support the two-gap model of superconductivity, the presence of a modified layer at the surface of the crystals and an important and non-conventional role of the impurities in MgB2.

Resistivity measurements from 4.2 K up to 300 K were made on YNi_{2}B_{2}C single crystals with Tc=15.5 K. The resulting rho(T) curve shows a perfect Bloch-Grueneisen (BG) behavior, with a very small residual resistivity which indicates the low impurity content and the high cristallographic quality of the samples. The value lambda_{tr}=0.53 for the transport electron-phonon coupling constant was obtained by using the high-temperature constant value of d(rho)/dT and the plasma frequency reported in literature. The BG expression for the phononic part of the resistivity rho_{ph}(T) was then used to fit the data in the whole temperature range, by approximating alpha^{2}_{tr}F(Omega) with the experimental phonon spectral density G(Omega) multiplied by a two-step weighting function to be determined by the fit. The resulting fitting curve perfectly agrees with the experimental points. We also solved the real-axis Eliashberg equations in both s- and d-wave symmetries under the approximation alpha^{2}F(Omega)= alpha^{2}_{tr}F(Omega). We found that the value of lambda_{tr} here determined in single-band approximation is quite compatible with Tc and the gap Delta experimentally observed. Finally, we calculated the normalized tunneling conductance, whose comparison with break-junction tunnel data gives indication of the possible s-wave symmetry for the order parameter in YNi_{2}B_{2}C.

The resistivity was obtained in the temperature range between 4.2 K and 300 K by using an AC Van der Pauw technique. When the temperature is lowered, the rho_{ab}(T) curves show a transition from a linear behaviour to a semiconducting-like one. The deviation from the linearity occurs at a do**-dependent temperature T_{ch}. This effect can be interpreted as due to a progressive pinning of preexistent charge stripes. In the same framework, the appearance of anomalous sharp peaks in the rho_{ab}(T) curves of superconducting samples just above T_{c} may be explained by a transition from a nematic to a more ordered smectic electronic stripe phase.

An intrinsic gap depression at the Superconductor-Insulator interface due to the very short value of the coherence length in High-Tc Superconductors [HTSs] is considered, in the framework of a mixed (s+id)-wave pair symmetry for the order parameter ranging from pure s to pure d-wave. This gap depression acts as the main physical agent causing the relevant reduction of IcRn(T) values with respect to BCS expectations in HTS SIS Josephson junctions. Good agreement with various experimental data is obtained with both pure s-wave and pure d-wave symmetries of the order parameter, but with amounts of gap depression depending on the pair symmetry adopted. Regardless of the pair symmetry considered, these results prove the importance of the surface order-parameter depression in the correct interpretation of the Ic(T)Rn(T) data in HTS SIS junctions. In a case of planar YBCO-based junction the use of the de Gennes condition allowed us to tentatively obtain an upper limit for the amount of d-wave present in the order parameter of YBCO.

Most of the observed differences between theoretical and experimental curves at energy greater than gap can be explained by a smooth energy dependence of the normal density of states that we introduced in the direct solution of the Eliashberg equations. The electron-phonon coupling constant determined in a self-consistent way is equal to 2.69, giving evidence for a strong electron-phonon interaction in BSCCO. Similar results have been obtained in 7 break-junction tunneling curves measured on the same BSCCO single crystals.
