We study the electron-phonon relaxation in the model of a granular metal film, where the grains are formed by regularly arranged potential barriers of arbitrary transparency. The relaxation rate of Debye acoustic phonons is calculated, taking into account two mechanisms of electron-phonon scattering: the standard Fröhlich interaction of the lattice deformation with the electron density and the interaction mediated by the displacement of grain boundaries dragged by the lattice vibration. At the lowest temperatures, the electron-phonon cooling power follows the power-law temperature dependence typical for clean systems but with the prefactor growing as the transparency of the grain boundaries decreases.

Spontaneous optical emission of graphene irradiated by intense single-cycle terahertz pulses was investigated experimentally and explained theoretically. We found that emitted photons are polarized predominantly perpendicular to the electric field of the terahertz pulse, which proves that the terahertz field not only heats the electrons, but also creates a strongly nonequilibrium momentum distribution. Comparison of the measured optical spectrum and polarization anisotropy with the results of numerical modeling allowed us to estimate a momentum isotropization time for electrons in graphene to be ~25 fs and roughly reconstruct the distribution function evolution in k-space.

Additive manufacturing (AM) allows printing parts of complex geometries that cannot be produced by standard technologies. Besides, AM provides the possibility to create gradient materials with different structural and physical properties. We, for the first time, printed gradient soft magnetic materials from paramagnetic powders (316L steel and Cu-12Al-2Fe (in wt.%) aluminium bronze)). The magnetic properties can be adjusted during the in-situ printing process. The saturated magnetization value of alloys reaches 49 emu g^{-1}. The changes in the magnetic properties have been attributed to the formation of the BCC phase after mixing two FCC-dominated powders. Moreover, the phase composition of the obtained gradient materials can be predicted with reasonable accuracy by the CALPHAD approach, thus providing efficient optimization of the performance. The obtained results provide new prospects for printing gradient magnetic alloys.

We consider the statistical properties of a non-falling trajectory in the Whitney problem of an inverted pendulum excited by an external force. In the case when the external force is white noise, we recently found the instantaneous distribution function of the pendulum angle and velocity over an infinite time interval using a transfer-matrix analysis of the supersymmetric field theory. Here, we generalize our approach to the case of finite time intervals and multipoint correlation functions. Using the developed formalism, we calculate the Lyapunov exponent, which determines the decay rate of correlations on a non-falling trajectory.

We study stochastic dynamics of an inverted pendulum subject to a random force in the horizontal direction (Whitney's problem). Considered on the entire time axis, the problem admits a unique solution that always remains in the upper half plane. We formulate the problem of statistical description of this never-falling trajectory and solve it by a field-theoretical technique assuming a white-noise driving. In our approach based on the supersymmetric formalism of Parisi and Sourlas, statistic properties of the never-falling trajectory are expressed in terms of the zero mode of the corresponding transfer-matrix Hamiltonian. The emerging mathematical structure is similar to that of the Fokker-Planck equation, which however is written for the "square root" of the probability distribution function. Our results for the statistics of the non-falling trajectory are in perfect agreement with direct numerical simulations of the stochastic pendulum equation. In the limit of strong driving (no gravitation), we obtain an exact analytical solution for the instantaneous joint probability distribution function of the pendulum's angle and its velocity.

This is a strongly nonperturbative regime of light-matter interaction in which particles get accelerated to energies exceeding the initial Fermi energy of 0.2 eV over a timescale of a few femtoseconds. The second-harmonic current is generated as electrons drift through the region of momenta corresponding to interband transition resonance at an optical frequency. The resulting strongly asymmetric distortion of carrier distribution in momentum space gives rise to an enhanced electric-dipole nonlinear response at the second harmonic. We develop an approximate analytic theory of this effect which accurately predicts observed intensity and polarization of the second-harmonic signal.

The paper is devoted to new modifications of recently proposed adaptive methods of Mirror Descent for convex minimization problems in the case of several convex functional constraints. Methods for problems of two classes are considered. The first type of problems with Lipschitz-continuous objective (generally speaking, nonsmooth) functional. The second one is for problems with a Lipschitz-continuous gradient of the objective smooth functional. We consider the class of problems with a non-smooth objective functional equal to the maximum of smooth functionals with a Lipschitz-continuous gradient. Note that functional constraints, generally speaking, are non-smooth and Lipschitz-contionuous. The proposed modifications allow saving the algorithm running time due to consideration of not all functional constraints on non-productive steps. Estimates for the rate of convergence of the methods under consideration are obtained. The methods proposed are optimal from the point of view of lower oracle estimates. The results of numerical experiments illustrating the advantages of the proposed procedure for some examples are given.

We study the effect of superconducting fluctuations on the conductivity of metals at arbitrary temperatures $T$ and impurity scattering rates $τ^{-1}$. Using the standard diagrammatic technique but in the Keldysh representation, we derive the general expression for the fluctuation correction to the dc conductivity applicable for any space dimensionality and analyze it the case of the film geometry. We observe that the usual classification in terms of the Aslamazov-Larkin, Maki-Thompson and density-of-states diagrams is to some extent artificial since these contributions produce similar terms, which partially cancel each other. In the diffusive limit, our results fully coincide with recent calculations in the Keldysh technique. In the ballistic limit near the transition, we demonstrate the absence of a divergent term $(Tτ)^2$ attributed previously to the density-of-states contribution. In the ballistic limit far above the transition, the temperature-dependent part of the conductivity correction is shown to scale roughly as $Tτ$.

We report on the first experimental observation of graphene optical emission induced by the intense THz pulse. P-doped CVD graphene with the initial Fermi energy of about 200 meV was used, optical photons was detected in the wavelength range of 340-600 nm. Emission started when THz field amplitude exceeded 100 kV/cm. For THz fields from 200 to 300 kV/cm the temperature of optical radiation was constant, while the number of emitted photons increased several dozen times. This fact clearly indicates multiplication of electron-hole pairs induced by an external field itself and not due to electron heating. The experimental data are in a good agreement with the theory of Landau-Zener interband transitions. It is shown theoretically that Landau-Zener transitions are possible even in the case of heavily doped graphene because the strong THz field removes quasiparticles from the region of interband transitions during several femtoseconds, which cancels the Pauli blocking effect.

This paper makes use of a one-dimensional kinetic model to investigate the nonlinear longitudinal dynamics of electron beams generated in the plasma under the influence of a self-generated electric field. It is expressed as where is a wave potential, , and charge particle distribution functions satisfy the Vlasov equation. It is proved that its correct solution is characterized by sudden change in the resonant part of the distribution function. Hence, in particular, the incorrectness of the established in the literature point of view follows that the fast, with velocities over V, and slow, with velocities under V, trapped particles are described by the same distribution function. Also for the first time it is shown that the self-generated strong electric field always produces antitropic electron beams with the velocities much larger than the value V, including the cold plasma limit. The possibility of implementing a new class of self-consistent wave structures with a nonzero average potential is shown. Maximum possible amplitude of a self-generated electric field in a stationary collisionless plasma is determined.

The electrostatic shear-flow-driven ion cyclotron instability of magnetic field aligned sheared plasma flow is investigated analytically. It is shown that the shear-flow-driven electrostatic ion cyclotron instability can be considered as a combination of three different instabilities determined by theirs own mechanism of excitation: ion-kinetic, ion-hydrodynamic and electron-kinetic. Each of these instabilities are dominant in different ranges of the wavelength along the magnetic field. The linearized dispersion equation is solved within the limits of long and short waves along the magnetic field where effects of electrons and ions, respectively, are dominant in the development of these instabilities. The general criterion of instability excitation, which couples the flow velocity shear and wave number across the magnetic field, is obtained.

The linear and renormalized nonlinear kinetic theory of drift instability of plasma shear flow across the magnetic field, which has the Kelvin's method of shearing modes or so-called non-modal approach as its foundation, is developed. The developed theory proves that the time-dependent effect of the finite ion Larmor radius is the key effect, which is responsible for the suppression of drift turbulence in an inhomogeneous electric field. This effect leads to the non-modal decrease of the frequency and growth rate of the unstable drift perturbations with time. We find that turbulent scattering of the ion gyrophase is the dominant effect, which determines extremely rapid suppression of drift turbulence in shear flow.

We discuss a possible nature of the near-threshold anomaly above 2.14 MeV in $^8$He and relate it to the population of a $1^-$ continuum (soft dipole excitation) with peak value at about 3 MeV. The lowest energy group of events in the $^{10}$He spectrum was observed at $\sim 3$ MeV with a cross section of $\sim 140$ $μ$b/sr. We argue that this result is possibly consistent with the previously reported observation of $^{10}$He, in that case providing a new g.s. position for $^{10}$He at about 3 MeV.

The Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is modelled with the help of a simple model representing a classical damped oscillator forced by external forcing. Eastern Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) and the mean equatorial Pacific thermocline depth correspond to the roles of momentum and position. The external forcing of the system is supplied by short-period meridional mass fluctuations in the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean due to the joint effect of the atmospheric variability over the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), bottom topography and coastlines, and also by the variability of westerly winds in the tropics. Under such conditions the ENSO-like oscillations arise as a result of propagation of signals due to both initial signals appeared in the Southern Ocean and the tropical westerly wind anomaly, that propagate then across the equatorial Pacific by means of fast wave processes. The external forcings are the main factor in establishing the oscillation pattern.

This article deals with the investigation of the influence of topography and coastlines on the dynamics of the depth averaged Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), driven by wind and atmospheric pressure. This is achieved with the help of a global barotropic circulation model, under idealized and real atmospheric conditions.
It is shown that the variability of meridional mass fluxes due to the atmospheric conditions over the ACC can induce short-period density anomalies in the Southern Ocean to the north in the vicinity of 47S, which can be transferred to low latitudes by the wave mechanism described by Ivchenko et al. 2004, that could have significance with respect to rapid extra-tropical oceanic links. The results of the barotropic modeling demonstrate that changes in wind strength over the ACC, together with the effect of bottom topography and coastlines, induce some meridional flow variability in the Southern Ocean, and this meridional flux variability in the Pacific Ocean is anticorrelated with the strength of the wind over the ACC. The possible link between the short-term variations of the meridional flux in the Pacific sector and the ENSO events (Southern Oscillation) is discussed.

The observed angular correlation pattern is uniquely explained by the interference of the $1/2^-$ resonance with a virtual state $1/2^+$ (limit on the scattering length is obtained as $a > -20$ fm), and with the $5/2^+$ resonance at energy $\geq 4.2$ MeV.

This work summarises the present understanding of the expected MSSM SUSY Higgs reach for CMS. Many of the studies presented here result from detailed detector simulations incorporating final CMS detector design and response. With 30 fb-1 the h -> gamma, gamma and h -> bb channels allow to cover most of the MSSM parameter space. For the massive A,H,H+ MSSM Higgs states the channels A,H -> tau,tau and H+ -> tau,nu turn out to be the most profitable ones in terms of mass reach and parameter space coverage. Consequently CMS has made a big effort to trigger efficiently on taus. Provided neutralinos and sleptons are not too heavy, there is an interesting complementarity in the reaches for A,H -> tau,tau and A,H -> chi, chi.

For most physical processes the tracks observed in the muon stations must be matched with the corresponding tracks in the inner tracker, the external muon system providing muon identification and triggering but the tracker points giving the precise momentum measurement at lower momenta. For high momenta the momentum resolution is much improved by the interconnection of inner and outer measurements. The matching of outer and inner measurements is more delicate in case of muons embedded in jets. A study of the matching procedure was carried out using samples of (b, anti b) jets at high Pt, requiring (b, anti b) -> mu decays.

It represents the status of our understanding of these subjects as of Summer 1997.
As a benchmark model we used the minimal supergravity-inspired super- symmetric standard model (mSUGRA) with a stable LSP. Discovery of SUSY at the LHC should be relatively straightforward. It may occur through the observation of a large excesses of events in missing E_T + jets, or with one or more isolated leptons. An excess of trilepton events or of isolated dileptons with E_T^miss, exhibiting a characteristic signature in the l^+l^- invariant mass distribution could also be the first manifestation of SUSY production. Squark and gluino production may represent a copious source of Higgs bosons through cascade decays. The lightest SUSY Higgs h->bbbar may be reconstructed with a signal/background ratio of order 1. The lightest supersymmetric particle of SUSY models with conserved R-parity represents a very good candidate for the cosmological dark matter. The region of parameter space where this is true is well-covered by our searches, at least for tan(beta)=2.
If supersymmetry exists at electroweak scale it could hardly escape detection in CMS, and the study of supersymmetry will form a central part of our physics program.

We conclude that this channel gives promising discovery possibilities for the Higgs boson mass range 100-140 GeV, during LHC operation at a low luminosity. With 30 fb$^{-1}$ of accumulated data and for $M_H=120$ GeV about 100 signal events could be observed with the number of background events larger by a factor of 2 only, showing a signal significance $S/\sqrt{B}\sim 7$. We use the difference of distributions in the partonic subprocess energy $\sqrt{\hat s}$ for the signal and background for a better separation of the signal.

The compact muon solenoid detector performance is adopted for a realistic study of observability. In this discovery channel, the masses of the $h$ and the $A$ can be reconstructed. The impact of supersymmetric decay modes is considered.
