We introduce a method for constructing reduced-order models directly from videos of dynamical systems. The method uses a non-intrusive tracking to isolate the motion of a user-selected part in the video of an autonomous dynamical system. In the space of delayed observations of this motion, we reconstruct a low-dimensional attracting spectral submanifold (SSM) whose internal dynamics serves as a mathematically justified reduced-order model for nearby motions of the full system. We obtain this model in a simple polynomial form that allows explicit identification of important physical system parameters, such as natural frequencies, linear and nonlinear dam** and nonlinear stiffness. Beyond faithfully reproducing attracting steady states and limit cycles, our SSM-reduced models can also uncover hidden motion not seen in the video, such as unstable fixed points and unstable limit cycles forming basin boundaries. We demonstrate all these features on experimental videos of five physical systems: a double pendulum, an inverted flag in counter-flow, water sloshing in tank, a wing exhibiting aeroelastic flutter and a shimmying wheel.

The steering control of an autonomous unicycle is considered. The underlying dynamical model of a single rolling wheel is discussed regarding the steady state motions and their stability. The unicycle model is introduced as the simplest possible extension of the rolling wheel where the location of the center of gravity is controlled. With the help of the Appellian approach, a state space representation of the controlled nonholonomic system is built in a way that the most compact nonlinear equations of motions are constructed. Based on controllability analysis, feedback controllers are designed which successfully carry out lane changing and turning maneuvers. The behavior of the closed-loop system is demonstrated by numerical simulations.

The robustness of dynamical systems against external perturbations is crucial in engineering; however, it is often overlooked for the lack of methods for rapidly computing it. This paper proposes a novel algorithm for estimating the robustness of systems subject to time delay. More precisely, the algorithm iteratively estimates the so-called local integrity measure (LIM), that is, the radius of the largest hypersphere centered at the fixed point and located within its basin of attraction. Since time-delayed systems are infinite dimensional, initial conditions are restricted to a constrained type of initial functions. The semi-discretization method is used for rapidly simulating the dynamics of the systems, while trajectories are classified as converging or diverging using a subdivision of the reduced phase space into cells. The algorithm was tested on four different mechanical systems, and in all cases it very quickly provided an accurate estimation of the LIM. Moreover, it enabled the study of LIM trends in a multi-dimensional parameter space, which would have been unfeasible with alternative methods. This breakthrough in computational efficiency has important implications for engineering design, allowing for careful consideration of dynamical integrity and enhancing the safety and reliability of engineered systems, especially in the presence of time delays.

Nonholonomic models of automobiles are developed by utilizing tools of analytical mechanics, in particular the Appellian approach that allows one to describe the vehicle dynamics with minimum number of time-dependent state variables. The models are categorized based on how they represent the wheel-ground contact, whether they incorporate the longitudinal dynamics, and whether they consider the steering dynamics. It is demonstrated that the developed models can be used to design low-complexity controllers that enable automated vehicles to execute a large variety of maneuvers with high precision.
