We investigate collective spin excitations of graphene electrons with short-ranged interactions and subject to the external Zeeman magnetic field. We find that in addition to the familiar Silin spin wave, a collective spin-flip excitation that reduces to the uniform precession when the wave's momentum approaches zero, the magnetized graphene supports another collective mode visible in the transverse spin susceptibility: a collective spin-current mode. Unlike the Silin wave, this mode is not dictated by the spin-rotational symmetry but rather owns its existence to the pseudo-spin structure of the graphene lattice. We find the new collective excitation to become sharply defined in a finite interval of wave's momenta, the range of which is determined by the interaction and the magnetization.

We use a hydrodynamic approach to investigate dynamic spin susceptibility of the antiferromagnetic spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chain with a uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in the presence of an external magnetic field. We find that transverse (with respect to the magnetic field) spin susceptibility harbors two (respectively, three) spin excitation modes when the magnetic field is parallel (respectively, orthogonal) to the DM axis. In all cases, the marginally irrelevant backscattering interaction between the spinons creates a finite energy splitting between optical branches of excitations at $k = 0$. Additionally, for the orthogonal geometry, the two lower spin branches exhibit avoided crossing at finite momentum which is determined by the total magnetic field (the sum of the external and internal molecular fields) acting on spinons. Our approximate analytical calculations compare well with numerical results obtained using matrix-product-state (MPS) techniques. Physical consequences of our findings for the electron spin resonance experiments are discussed in detail.

Novel phenomena in magnetically-intercalated graphite has been a subject of much research, pioneered and promoted by M.~S. and G.~Dresselhaus and many others in the 1980s. Among the most enigmatic findings of that era was a dramatic, roller-coaster-like behavior of the magnetoresistivity in EuC$_6$ compound, in which magnetic Eu$^{2+}$ ions form a triangular lattice that is commensurate to graphite honeycomb planes. In this study, we provide a long-awaited {\it microscopic} explanation of this behavior, demonstrating that the resistivity of EuC$_6$ is dominated by spin excitations in Eu-planes and their highly nontrivial evolution with the magnetic field. Together with our theoretical analysis, the present study showcases the power of the synthetic 2D materials as a source of potentially significant insights into the nature of exotic spin excitations.

We investigate the amplitude (Higgs) mode associated with longitudinal fluctuations of the order parameter at the continuous spontaneous symmetry breaking phase transition. In quantum magnets, due to the fast decay of the amplitude mode into low-energy Goldstone excitations, direct observation of this mode represents a challenging task. By focusing on a quasi-one-dimensional geometry, we circumvent the difficulty and investigate the amplitude mode in a system of weakly coupled spin chains with the help of quantum Monte Carlo simulations, stochastic analytic continuation, and a chain-mean field approach combined with a map** to the field-theoretic sine-Gordon model. The amplitude mode is observed to emerge in the longitudinal spin susceptibility in the presence of a weak symmetry-breaking staggered field. A conventional measure of the amplitude mode in higher dimensions, the singlet bond mode, is found to appear at a lower than the amplitude mode frequency. We identify these two excitations with the second (first) breather of the sine-Gordon theory, correspondingly. In contrast to higher-dimensional systems, the amplitude and bond order fluctuations are found to carry significant spectral weight in the quasi-1D limit.

We propose and investigate a simple one-dimensional model for a single-channel quantum wire hosting electrons that interact repulsively and are subject to a significant spin-orbit interaction. We show that an external Zeeman magnetic field, applied at the right angle to the Rashba spin-orbit axis, drives the wire into a correlated spin-density wave state with gapped spin and gapless charge excitations. By computing the ground-state degeneracies of the model with either (anti-)periodic or open boundary conditions, we conclude that the correlated spin-density state realizes a gapless symmetry-protected topological phase, as the ground state is unique in the ring geometry while it is two-fold degenerate in the wire with open boundaries. Microscopically the two-fold degeneracy is found to be protected by the conservation of the magnetization parity. Open boundaries induce localized zero-energy (midgap) states which are described, at the special Luther-Emery point of the model, by Majorana fermions. We find that spin densities at the open ends of the wire exhibit unusual long-ranged correlations despite the fact that all correlations in the bulk of the wire decay in a power-law or exponential fashion. Our study exposes the crucial importance of the long-ranged string operator needed to implement the correct commutation relations between spin densities at different points in the wire. Along the way we rederive the low-energy theory of Galilean-invariant electron systems in terms of current operators.

We study the transverse dynamical susceptibility of an antiferromagnetic spin$-1/2$ chain in presence of a longitudinal Zeeman field. In the low magnetization regime in the gapless phase, we show that the marginally irrelevant backscattering interaction between the spinons creates a non-zero gap between two branches of excitations at small momentum. We further demonstrate how this gap varies upon introducing a second neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction, vanishing in the limit of a non-interacting "spinon gas". In the high magnetization regime, as the Zeeman field approaches the saturation value, we uncover the appearance of two-magnon bound states in the transverse susceptibility. This bound state feature generalizes the one arising from string states in the Bethe ansatz solution of the integrable case. Our results are based on numerically accurate, unbiased matrix-product-state techniques as well as analytic approximations.

We study the transverse dynamical spin susceptibility of the two dimensional U(1) spinon Fermi surface spin liquid in a small applied Zeeman field. We show that both short-range interactions, present in a generic Fermi liquid, as well as gauge fluctuations, characteristic of the U(1) spin liquid, qualitatively change the result based on the frequently assumed non-interacting spinon approximation. Short-range interaction leads to a new collective mode: a "spinon spin wave" which splits off from the two-spinon continuum at small momentum and disperses downward. Gauge fluctuations renormalize the susceptibility, providing non-zero power law weight in the region outside the spinon continuum and giving the spin wave a finite lifetime, which scales as momentum squared. We also study the effect of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropy on the zero momentum susceptibility, which is measured in electron spin resonance (ESR), and obtain a resonance linewidth linear in temperature and varying as $B^{2/3}$ with magnetic field $B$ at low temperature. Our results form the basis for a theory of inelastic neutrons scattering, ESR, and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of this quantum spin liquid state.

We show that the superconducting transition follows either the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), or the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) scenarios, depending on the position of the chemical potential with respect to the bottom of the majority band, and the strength of the Coulomb repulsion between electrons. Hence, the BEC-BCS crossover in this system can be driven either by the change in the chemical potential, or the distance to a gate.

We study a $T=0$ quantum phase transition between a quantum paramagnetic state and a magnetically ordered state for a spin $S=1$ XXZ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a two-dimensional triangular lattice. The transition is induced by an easy plane single-ion anisotropy $D$. At the mean-field level, the system undergoes a direct transition at a critical $D = D_c$ between a paramagnetic state at $D > D_c$ and an ordered state with broken U(1) symmetry at $D < D_c$. We show that beyond mean field the phase diagram is very different and includes an intermediate, partially ordered chiral liquid phase. Specifically, we find that inside the paramagnetic phase the Ising ($J_z$) component of the Heisenberg exchange binds magnons into a two-particle bound state with zero total momentum and spin. This bound state condenses at $D > D_c$, before single-particle excitations become unstable, and gives rise to a chiral liquid phase, which spontaneously breaks spatial inversion symmetry, but leaves the spin-rotational U(1) and time-reversal symmetries intact. This chiral liquid phase is characterized by a finite vector chirality without long range dipolar magnetic order. In our analytical treatment, the chiral phase appears for arbitrarily small $J_z$ because the magnon-magnon attraction becomes singular near the single-magnon condensation transition. This phase exists in a finite range of $D$ and transforms into the magnetically ordered state at some $D<D_c$. We corroborate our analytic treatment with numerical density matrix renormalization group calculations.

In the experimentally relevant limit $J' \ll D \ll J$ of strong DM interaction the spins on the neighboring chains are forced to rotate in opposite directions, effectively resulting in a cancelation of the interchain interaction between components of spins in the plane normal to the vector ${\pmb D}$. This has the effect of promoting two-dimensional collinear spin density wave (SDW) state, which preserves U(1) symmetry of rotations about the $\pmb D$-axis. We also investigate response of this interesting system to an external magnetic field ${\pmb h}$ and obtain the $h-D$ phase diagrams for the two important configurations, ${\pmb h} \parallel {\pmb D}$ and ${\pmb h} \perp {\pmb D}$.

The results offer a consistent picture of the $J_d$-dominant regime in terms of three sets of spin chains weakly coupled by the ferromagnetic inter-chain interactions $J_{1,2}$. When either $J_1$ or $J_2$ is dominant, the model is found to support one of two cuboctohedral phases, cuboc1 and cuboc2. These cuboc states host non-coplanar long-ranged magnetic order and possess finite scalar spin chirality. However, in the compensated regime $J_1 \simeq J_2$, a valence bond crystal phase emerges between the two cuboc phases. We find excellent agreement between an analytical theory based on coupled spin chains and unbiased DMRG calculations, including at a very detailed level of comparison of the structure of the valence bond crystal state. To our knowledge, this is the first such comprehensive understanding of a highly frustrated two-dimensional (2d) quantum antiferromagnet. We find no evidence of either the one-dimensional (1d) gapless spin liquid or the chiral spin liquids, which were previously suggested by parton mean field theories.

Somewhat surprisingly, we find that for all field orientations, only the larger Fermi surface is superconducting. When the magnetic field is oriented out-of-plane the system realizes a topological $p+ip$ pairing state. When the field is rotated in-plane the order parameter develops nodes along the field direction and finite center-of-mass-momentum pairing is realized. We demonstrate that the pairing symmetry of the system can be easily probed experimentally due to the dependence of various thermodynamic quantities on the magnetic field geometry, and calculate the electronic specific heat as an example.

We propose a universal non-linear sigma model field theory for one dimensional frustrated ferromagnets, which applies in the vicinity of a "quantum Lifshitz point", at which the ferromagnetic state develops a spin wave instability. We investigate the phase diagram resulting from perturbations of the exchange and of magnetic field away from the Lifshitz point, and uncover a rich structure with two distinct regimes of different properties, depending upon the value of a marginal, dimensionless, parameter of the theory. In the regime relevant for one dimensional systems with low spin, we find a metamagnetic transition line to a vector chiral phase. This line terminates in a critical endpoint from which emerges a cascade of multipolar phases. We show that the field theory has the property of "asymptotic solubility", so that a particular saddle point approximation becomes asymptotically exact near the Lifshitz point. Our results provide an analytic framework for prior numerical results on frustrated ferromagnets, and can be applied much more broadly.

We show that this system possess rich phase diagram in field/anisotropy plane due to competition between classical and quantum orders: an incommensurate non-coplanar spiral state, which is favored classically, and a commensurate co-planar state, which is stabilized by quantum fluctuations. We show that the transformation between these two states is highly non-trivial and involves two intermediate phases -- the phase with co-planar incommensurate spin order and the one with non-coplanar double-${\bf Q}$ spiral order. The transition between the two co-planar states is of commensurate- incommensurate type, not accompanied by softening of spin-wave excitations. We calculate the magnetic susceptibility of the triangular-lattice quantum antiferromagnet in the correlated paramagnet regime and reveal a surprisingly accurate microscopic correspondence with its classical counterpart at all accessible temperatures. The extrapolation of the observed relation to zero temperature suggests the absence of the magnetic order in the ground state. We critically examine the implications of this unusual scenario.

We use a combination of density matrix renormalization group calculations and analytical approaches to study a simplified model for a spatially anisotropic spin-1/2 triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet: the three-leg triangular spin tube (TST). The model is described by three Heisenberg chains, with exchange constant J, coupled antiferromagnetically with exchange constant J' along the diagonals of the ladder system, with periodic boundary conditions in the shorter direction. We determine the full phase diagram of this model as a function of spatial anisotropy, J'/J, and magnetic field. We find a rich phase diagram, which is dominated by quantum states - phases corresponding to the classical ground state appears only in a small region. Among the dominant phases generated by quantum effects are commensurate and incommensurate coplanar quasi-ordered states, which appear in the vicinity of the isotropic region for most fields, and in the high field region for most anisotropies. The coplanar states, while not classical ground states, can be understood semiclassically. Even more strikingly, the largest region of phase space is occupied by a spin density wave phase, which has incommensurate collinear correlations along the field. This phase has no semiclassical analog, and may be ascribed to enhanced one-dimensional (1d) fluctuations due to frustration. Cutting across the phase diagram is a magnetization plateau, with a gap to all excitations and up up down spin order, with a quantized magnetization equal to 1/3 of the saturation value. In the TST, this plateau extends almost but not quite to the decoupled chains limit. Most of the above features are expected to carry over to the two dimensional system, which we also discuss. At low field, a dimerized phase appears, which is particular to the 1d nature of the TST, and which can be understood from quantum Berry phase arguments.

Magnetic field applied parallel to the lattice is used to tune one of the spin densities to a particular commensurate with the lattice value in which the system spontaneously `locks in' via van Hove enhanced density wave state. Electrons of opposite spin polarization retain their metallic character and provide for the half-metal state which, in addition, supports magnetization plateau in a finite interval of external magnetic field. Similar half-metal state is realized in the finite-U Hubbard model on a triangular lattice at 1/3 of the maximum magnetization.

We suggest that electron spin resonance (ESR) experiment can be used as a probe of spinon excitations of hypothetical spin-liquid state of frustrated antiferromagnet in the presence of asymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. We describe assumptions under which the ESR response is reduced to the response of 2D electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Unlike previous treatments, the spin-orbit coupling, Δ_{SO}, is not assumed small compared to the Zeeman splitting, Δ_Z. We demonstrate that ESR response diverges at the edges of the absorption spectrum for ac magnetic field perpendicular to the static field. At the compensation point, Δ_{SO}\approx Δ_Z, the broad absorption spectrum exhibits features that evolve with temperature, T, even when T is comparable to the Fermi energy.

Recent experiments on the anisotropic spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet Cs_2CuBr_4 have revealed a remarkably rich phase diagram in applied magnetic fields, consisting of an unexpectedly large number of ordered phases. Motivated by this finding, we study the role of spatial anisotropy, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and quantum fluctuations on the magnetization process of a triangular antiferromagnet, coming from the semiclassical limit. The richness of the problem stems from two key facts: 1) the classical isotropic model exhibits a large accidental ground state degeneracy, and 2) these three ingredients compete with one another and split this degeneracy in opposing ways. Using a variety of complementary approaches, including extensive Monte Carlo numerics, spin-wave theory, and an analysis of Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons at high fields, we find that their interplay gives rise to a complex phase diagram consisting of numerous incommensurate and commensurate phases. Our results shed light on the observed phase diagram for Cs_2CuBr_4 and suggest a number of future theoretical and experimental directions that will be useful for obtaining a complete understanding of this material's interesting phenomenology.

Among the broad spectrum of systems predicted to exhibit topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions, one-dimensional wires with strong spin-orbit coupling provide one of the most promising experimental candidates. Here we investigate the fate of the topological superconducting phase in such wires when repulsive interactions are present. Using a combination of Density Matrix Renormalization Group, bosonization, and Hartree-Fock techniques, we demonstrate that while interactions degrade the bulk gap -consistent with recent results of Gangadharaiah et al.- they also greatly expand the parameter range over which the topological phase arises. In particular, we show that with interactions this phase can be accessed over a broader chemical potential window, thereby leading to greater immunity against disorder-induced chemical potential fluctuations in the wire. We also suggest that in certain wires strong interactions may allow Majorana fermions to be generated without requiring a magnetic field.

Tunneling density of states of both the massless and massive (gapped) particles in metallic carbon nanotubes is known to have anomalous energy dependence. This is the result of coupling to multiple low-energy bosonic excitation (plasmons). For both kinds of particles the ensuing effect is the suppression of the density of states by electron-electron interactions. We demonstrate that the optical absorption between gapless and gapped states is affected by the many-body effects in the opposite way. The absorption probability is enhanced compared with the non-interacting value and develops a power-law frequency dependence with the exponent -0.2 for typical nanotubes.

The shift and splitting exhibit strong anisotropy with respect to the direction of the applied magnetic field and do not vanish in zero field. The low-temperature evolution of spin resonance response is a result of the specific modification of one-dimensional spinon continuum under the action of the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DM) within the spin chains. Parameters of the uniform DM interaction are derived from the experiment.

We report a thorough theoretical study of the low temperature phase diagram of Cs_2CuCl_4, a spatially anisotropic spin S=1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet, in a magnetic field. Our results, obtained in a quasi-one-dimensional limit in which the system is regarded as a set of weakly coupled Heisenberg chains, are in excellent agreement with experiment. The analysis reveals some surprising physics. First, we find that, when the magnetic field is oriented within the triangular layer, spins are actually most strongly correlated within planes perpendicular to the triangular layers. This is despite the fact that the inter-layer exchange coupling in Cs_2CuCl_4 is about an order of magnitude smaller than the weakest (diagonal) exchange in the triangular planes themselves. Second, the phase diagram in such orientations is exquisitely sensitive to tiny interactions, heretofore neglected, of order a few percent or less of the largest exchange couplings. These interactions, which we describe in detail, induce entirely new phases, and a novel commensurate-incommensurate transition, the signatures of which are identified in NMR experiments. We discuss the differences between the behavior of Cs_2CuCl_4 and an ideal two-dimensional triangular model, and in particular the occurrence of magnetization plateaux in the latter. These and other related results are presented here along with a thorough exposition of the theoretical methods, and a discussion of broader experimental consequences to Cs_2CuCl_4 and other materials.

We re-visit the phase diagram of the frustrated spin-1/2 ladder with two competing inter-chain antiferromagnetic exchanges, rung coupling J_\perp and diagonal coupling J_\times. We suggest, based on the accurate renormalization group analysis of the low-energy Hamiltonian of the ladder, that marginal inter-chain current-current interaction plays central role in destabilizing previously predicted intermediate columnar dimer phase in the vicinity of classical degeneracy line J_\perp = 2J_\times. Following this insight we then suggest that changing these competing inter-chain exchanges from the previously considered antiferromagnetic to the ferromagnetic ones eliminates the issue of the marginal interactions altogether and dramatically expands the region of stability of the columnar dimer phase. This analytical prediction is convincingly confirmed by the numerical density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization calculations as well as by the perturbative calculation in the strong rung-coupling limit. The phase diagram for ferromagnetic J_\perp and J_\times is determined.

Using one-dimensional bosonization, renormalization group methods, and current algebra techniques the ground state is determined in the limit J'<<J. We find that the dangling spins and chain spins form a spiral with O(1) and O(J'/J) static moments, respectively, atop of which the chain spins exhibit a smaller O[(J'/J)^2] antiferromagnetically ordered component along the axis perpendicular to the spiral plane.

We show that an interesting interplay of Zeeman and spin-orbit terms, facilitated by the electron-electron interaction, results in the spin-density wave (SDW) state when the magnetic field and spin-orbit axes are orthogonal. We show that this instability is enhanced in a closely related problem of Heisenberg spin chain with asymmetric uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. Magnetic field in the direction perpendicular to the DM anisotropy axis results in staggered long-range magnetic order along the orthogonal to the applied field direction. We explore consequences of the uniform DM interaction for the electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements, and point out that they provide way to probe right- and left-moving excitations of the spin chain separately.

The search for elementary excitations with fractional quantum numbers is a central challenge in modern condensed matter physics. We explore the possibility in a realistic model for several materials, the spin-1/2 spatially anisotropic frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet in two dimensions. By restricting the Hilbert space to that expressed by exact eigenstates of the Heisenberg chain, we derive an effective Schrödinger equation valid in the weak interchain-coupling regime. The dynamical spin correlations from this approach agree quantitatively with inelastic neutron measurements on the triangular antiferromagnet Cs_2CuCl_4. The spectral features in such antiferromagnets can be attributed to two types of excitations: descendents of one-dimensional spinons of individual chains, and coherently propagating "triplon" bound states of spinon pairs. We argue that triplons are generic features of spatially anisotropic frustrated antiferromagnets, and arise because the bound spinon pair lowers its kinetic energy by propagating between chains.

We show that an interesting interplay of Zeeman and spin-orbit terms, facilitated by the electron-electron interaction, results in the spin-density wave (SDW) state when the magnetic field and spin-orbit axes are orthogonal. This strongly affects charge transport through the wire: with SDW stabilized, single particle backscattering off an nonmagnetic impurity becomes irrelevant. Sensitivity of the effect to the direction of the magnetic field can be used for experimental verification of this proposal.

We study the phase diagram of two models of spin-1/2 antiferromagnets composed of corner-sharing tetrahedra, the basis of the pyrochlore structure. Primarily, we focus on the Heisenberg antiferromaget on the checkerboard lattice (also called the planar pyrochlore and crossed-chains model). This model has an anisotropic limit, when the dimensionless ratio of two exchange constants, J_\times/J << 1, in which it consists of one-dimensional spin chains coupled weakly together in a frustrated fashion. Using recently developed techniques combining renormalization group ideas and one-dimensional bosonization and current algebra methods, we show that in this limit the model enters a crossed dimer state with two-fold spontaneous symmetry breaking but no magnetic order. We complement this result by an approximate ``quadrumer triplet boson'' calculation, which qualitatively captures the physics of the ``plaquette valence bond solid'' state believed to obtain for J_\times/J = 1. Using these known points in parameter space, the instabilities pointed to by the quadrumer boson calculation, and the simple limit J_\times/J >> 1, we construct a few candidate global phase diagrams for the model, and discuss the nature of the quantum phase transitions contained therein. Finally, we apply our quasi-one-dimensional techniques to an anisotropic limit of the three-dimensional pyrochlore antiferromagnet, an approximate model for magnetism in GeCu2O4. A crossed dimer state is predicted here as well.

Using Random Phase Approximation, we show that a crossed-chains model of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg spins, with frustrated interchain couplings, has a non-dimerized spin-liquid ground state in 2D, with deconfined spinons as the elementary excitations. The results are confirmed by a bosonization study, which shows that the system is an example of a `sliding Luttinger liquid'. In an external field, the system develops an incommensurate field-induced long range order with a finite transition temperature.

Abstract:
We consider the effect of dynamical localization on the lifetimes of the resonances in open wave-chaotic dielectric cavities. We show that dynamical localization leads to a log-normal distribution of the resonance lifetimes which scales with the localization length in excellent agreement with the results of numerical calculations for open rough microcavities.

We investigate possible nontrivial phases of a two-subband quantum wire. It is found that inter- and intra-subband interactions may drive the electron system of the wire into a gapped state. If the nominal electron densities in the two subbands are sufficiently close to each other, then the leading instability is the inter-subband charge-density wave (CDW). For large density imbalance, the interaction in the inter-subband Cooper channel may lead to a superconducting instability. The total charge-density mode, responsible for the conductance of an ideal wire, always remains gapless, which enforces the two-terminal conductance to be at the universal value of 2e^2/h per occupied subband. On the contrary, the tunneling density of states (DOS) in the bulk of the wire acquires a hard gap, above which the DOS has a non-universal singularity. This singularity is weaker than the square-root divergency characteristic for non-interacting quasiparticles near a gap edge due to the "dressing" of massive modes by a gapless total charge density mode. The DOS for tunneling into the end of a wire in a CDW-gapped state preserves the power-law behavior due to the frustration the edge introduces into the CDW order. This work is related to the vast literature on coupled 1D systems, and most of all, on two-leg Hubbard ladders. Whenever possible, we give derivations of the important results by other authors, adopted for the context of our study.

Abstract:
We present an analytical result for the ratio of the physical correlation length in a 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice, and the one which is actually computed in numerical simulations. This last correlation length is deduced from the second moment of the structure factor at the antiferromagnetic momentum Q. We show that the ratio is very close to one in agreement with previously…

We show that the ratio is very close to one in agreement with previously obtained numerical result of the 1/N expansion.
