Fluorescence-guided surgery has emerged as a vital tool for tumour resection procedures. As well as intraoperative tumour visualisation, 5-ALA-induced PpIX provides an avenue for quantitative tumour identification based on ratiometric fluorescence measurement. To this end, fluorescence imaging and fibre-based probes have enabled more precise demarcation between the cancerous and healthy tissues. These sensing approaches, which rely on collecting the fluorescence light from the tumour resection site and its remote spectral sensing, introduce challenges associated with optical losses. In this work, we demonstrate the viability of tumour detection at the resection site using a miniature fluorescence measurement system. Unlike the current bulky systems, which necessitate remote measurement, we have adopted a millimetre-sized spectral sensor chip for quantitative fluorescence measurements. A reliable measurement at the resection site requires a stable optical window between the tissue and the optoelectronic system. This is achieved using an antifouling diamond window, which provides stable optical transparency. The system achieved a sensitivity of 92.3% and specificity of 98.3% in detecting a surrogate tumour at a resolution of 1 x 1 mm2. As well as addressing losses associated with collecting and coupling fluorescence light in the current remote sensing approaches, the small size of the system introduced in this work paves the way for its direct integration with the tumour resection tools with the aim of more accurate interoperative tumour identification.

In this work, we explore the eternal collapsing phenomenon of a stellar system (e.g., a star) within the framework of $f(R)$ gravity and investigate some new aspects of the continued homogeneous gravitational collapse with perfect fluid distribution. The exact solutions of field equations have been obtained in an independent way by the parameterization of the expansion scalar ($Θ$) governed by the interior spherically symmetric FLRW metric. We impose the Darmois junction condition required for the smooth matching of the interior region to the Schwarzschild exterior metric across the boundary hypersurface of the star. The junction conditions demand that the pressure is non-vanishing at the boundary and is proportional to the non-linear terms of $f(R)$ gravity, and the mass function $m(t, r)$ is equal to Schwarzschild mass $M$. The eight massive stars, namely $Westerhout 49-2, BAT99-98, R136a1, R136a2, WR 24, Pismis 24-1$, $λ- Cephei$, and $β-Canis Majoris$ with their known astrophysical data (masses and radii) are used to estimate the numerical values of the model parameters which allows us to study the solutions numerically and graphically. Here we have discussed two $f(R)$ gravity models describing the collapse phenomenon. The singularity analysis of models is discussed via the apparent horizon and we have shown that stars tend to collapse for an infinite co-moving time in order to attain the singularity (an eternal collapsing phenomenon). We have also shown that our models satisfy the energy conditions and stability requirements for stellar systems.

In this work, we have investigated a novel aspect of black hole (BH) formation during the collapse of a self-gravitating configuration. The exact solution of the Einstein field equations is obtained in a model-independent way by considering a parametrization of the expansion scalar ($Θ$) in the background of spherically symmetric space-time geometry governed by the FLRW metric. Smooth matching of the interior solution with the Schwarzschild exterior metric across the boundary hypersurface of the star, together with the condition that the mass function $m(t,r)$ is equal to Schwarzschild mass $M$, is used to obtain all the physical and geometrical parameters in terms of the stellar mass. The four known massive stars namely $R136a3$, $Melnick$, $R136c$, and $R136b$ with their known astrophysical data (mass, radius, and present age) are used to study the physics of the model both numerically and graphically. We demonstrate that the formation of the apparent horizon occurs earlier than the singular state that is, the model of massive stars would inevitably lead to the formation of a BH as their end state. We have conducted an analysis indicating that the lifespans of massive stars are closely related to their respective masses. Our findings demonstrate that more massive stars exhibit considerably shorter lifespans in comparison to their lighter counterparts. Thus, the presented model corresponds to the evolutionary stages of astrophysical stellar objects and theoretically predicts their possible lifespan. We have also shown that our model satisfies the energy conditions and stability requirements via Herrera's cracking method.

In this study, we continue our previous work (Annu et al., 2023) by introducing a novel parametrization of the expansion scalar $Θ$ as a rational function of cosmic time $t$. The paper provides a comprehensive analysis of a homogeneous gravitational collapsing system, wherein the exact solutions of the Einstein field equations (EFEs) are determined using a new parametrization of $Θ$ in a model-independent way. The model is especially significant for the astrophysical applications because we have addressed the physical and geometrical quantities of the model in terms of Schwarzschild mass $M$. We have estimated the numerical value of the model parameter involved in the functional form of $Θ$-parametrization using the masses \& radii data of some massive stars namely, Westerhout 49-2, BAT99-98, R136a1, R136a2, WR 24, Pismis 24-1, $λ$ Cephei, $α$ Camelopardalis, $β$ Canis Majoris. We have presented theoretical investigations about such astrophysical stellar systems. The formation of apparent horizon is also studied for the collapsing system, and it has been shown that our model produces a continuing collapsing scenario of star (an eternal collapsing object).

A new class of self-gravitating collapsing star models with perfect fluid distributions is discussed in this work. The paper has a comprehensive analysis of a homogeneous gravitational collapsing system wherein using a parametrization scheme for the expansion-scalar $(Θ)$, the solutions of the Einstein Field Equations (EFEs) are determined independently. The background geometry for the analysis is considered to be homogeneous and isotropic represented by a Friedmann-Leimatre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric and by employing the boundary conditions, we have discussed the solution in more detail. Further, all the physical and geometrical parameters are obtained in terms of Schwarzschild mass $(M)$ that makes the model significant in astrophysical applications. The singularity analysis of the collapsing system is also discussed by the apparent-horizon, and it has seen that the homogenous gravitational collapse turns into a new kind of scenario- Eternal collapsing object.

A new method of introducing nanopores with spongy morphology during fabrication of size and pitch controlled flexible silicon microwires (SiMWs) in wafer scale is presented using nanosphere lithography technique in addition to metal catalyzed electroless etching technique by varying concentration of oxidant and introducing surfactant or co-solvents to the etching solution. For achieving self-assembled monolayer closed-pack pattern of SiO2 microparticles in wafer-scale simple spin coating process was used. The effect of variation of the etchant, oxidant and surfactant on the morphology and optical properties of SiMWs were studied. By simply controlling the diameter of SiO2 microparticles and concentration of H2O2 the size of the MWs as well as the introduction of pores could be controlled in wafer-scale. Average reflectance suppressed to below 8% in the broad spectral range of 400-800 nm for these porous, spongy and flexible SiMW arrays in wafer scale. The mechanism behind this formation of spongy, porous and flexible nature of the SiMWs is also demonstrated for a better understanding of the etching process.

We report on Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopic studies on oxygen vacancy induced structural disorder in Gd2Ti2O7-d single crystals grown by optical floating zone technique under argon atmosphere. The oxygen vacancies in Gd2Ti2O7-d wafers decrease with thermal annealing in an air atmosphere. The full width at half maximum of X-ray diffraction rocking curve decreases from 245 to 157 arc-second and the optical transmittance increases from 23 to 87 % (at 1000 nm) upon post growth thermal annealing. Raman spectroscopic studies reveal a monotonic increase in intensity of O-Gd-O (Eg) and Ti-O (A1g) stretching modes with thermal annealing. Since these modes are associated with modulation of oxygen x parameter which is sensitive to Ti-O octahedron distortion, the increase in Raman intensity indicates an improvement in structural ordering of oxygen sub-lattice in Gd2Ti2O7-d. Moreover, the photoluminescence studies also corroborate the Raman analysis in terms of reduction of structural defects associated with oxygen vacancies as a function of thermal annealing. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of using Raman spectroscopy to probe the structural disorder in Gd2Ti2O7-d crystals.

Two dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) have their unique potential in facilitating the stacking of layers of different 2D materials for optoelectronic devices with superior characteristics at a reduced cost. However, the fabrication of large area all-2D heterostructures is still challenging towards realizing practical devices. In the present work, we have demonstrated a rapid yet simple, impurity free and highly efficient sonication-assisted chemical exfoliation approach to synthesize hybrid vdWHs based on 2D molybdenum disulphide (MoS$_2$) and tungsten disulphide (WS$_2$), with high yield. Microscopic and spectroscopic studies have confirmed the successful exfoliation of layered 2D materials and formation of their hybrid heterostructure. The co-existence of 2D MoS2 and WS2 in the vdW hybrid is established by optical absorption and Raman shift measurements along with their chemical stiochiometry determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The spectral response of the vdWH/Si (2D/3D) heterojunction photodetector fabricated using the as-synthesized material is found to show superior broadband photoresponse compared to that shown by the individual 2D MoS$_2$ and WS$_2$ based devices. The peak responsivity is found to be ~2.15 A/W at a wavelength of ~560 nm for an applied bias of -5 V. The ease of fabrication and superior performance of the chemically synthesized vdWH-based devices have revealed their potential use for large area optoelectronic applications on Si compatible CMOS platforms.

The present paper deals with the gravitational collapse of an inhomogeneous spherical star consisting of dust fluid in the background of dark energy components with linear equation of state. We discussed the development of apparent horizon to investigate the black-hole formation in gravitational collapsing process. The collapsing process is examined first separately for dust cloud and dark energy and then under the combined effect of dust interacting with dark energy. It is obtained that when only dust cloud or dark energy is present the collapse leads to the formation of black-hole under certain conditions. When both of them are present, collapsing star does not form black-hole. However when dark energy is considered as cosmological constant, the collapse leads to black hole formation.

Here, we report the synthesis and physical properties of Co2FeGe (CFG) Heusler alloy (HA) nanoparticles (NPs). The NPs of size 23 nm are prepared using the co-precipitation method. X-ray and selected area electron diffraction patterns have confirmed the cubic Heusler phase of the NPs with the A2-disorder. These NPs are soft ferromagnetic, and exhibit a high saturation magnetization (Ms) along with a very high Curie temperature (Tc) of 1060 K. The observed Tc value matches closely with the theoretically calculated one following a model provided by Wurmehl et al. [1]. The high Ms and Tc make the present system a potential candidate for magnetically activated nano-devices working at high temperatures. The near-integral value 5.9 mehoB/f.u. of Ms at low temperatures indicates that the half-metallic ferromagnetism is preserved even in the particles even on the 20 nm length scale. Additionally, we have facilitated the existing HA-NP preparation method, which can be used in synthesizing other HA-NPs. The first-principles density functional theory computations complement the experimental results.

Spherical nanoparticles (NPs) of size 14 nm, made of intermetallic Fe2CoAl (FCA) Heusler alloy, are synthesized via the co-precipitation and thermal deoxidization method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns confirm that the present nanoalloy is crystallized in A2-disordered cubic Heusler structure. Magnetic field (H) and temperature (T) dependent magnetization (M) results reveal that the NPs are soft ferromagnetic (FM) with high saturation magnetization (Ms) and Curie temperature (Tc). Fe2CoAl nanoalloy does not follow the Slater Pauling (SP) rule, possibly because of the disorder present in the system. We also investigate its magnetic phase transition (MPT) and magnetocaloric (MC) properties. The peak value of the magnetic entropy change vs T curve at a magnetic field change of 20 kOe corresponds to about 2.65 J/kg-K, and the observed value of refrigeration capacity (RCP) is as large as 44 J/kg, suggesting a large heat conversion in magnetic refrigeration cycle. The Arrott plot and the nature of the universal curve accomplish that the FM to paramagnetic (PM) phase transition in Fe2CoAl nanoalloy is of second-order. The present study suggests that the Fe2CoAl nanoscale system is proficient, useful and a good candidate for the spintronics application and opens up a window for further research on full-Heusler based magnetic refrigerants.

Polycrystalline samples of Zr1-xAgxO2 (with x=0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06 and 0.08) were prepared by solid-state reaction route. All the prepared compounds are found to crystallize in monoclinic symmetry of ZrO2. In our study, pure ZrO2 compound exhibits paramagnetic behavior. However, the Ag-doped ZrO2 compounds exhibit ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition. The Curie temperature was found to increase from 28.7 K for x=0.02 to 173.2 K for x= 0.08 doped ZrO2. Thus, the introduction of Ag in ZrO2 induces ferromagnetism with a large ThetaC. The measurements of hysteresis curves indicate that Ag doped ZrO2 compounds exhibit hysteresis loops with a coercivity of around 1350 Oe. Moreover, increase in Ag concentration resulted increase in the value of saturation magnetization (MS); the maximum value of MS was recorded as 0.01 μB/Ag ion for x= 0.06 sample. The sintering of sample at high temperature (13500C) diminishes the ferromagnetism and it leads to paramagnetic behaviour.

The X-ray diffractions (XRD) patterns of these samples indicate single phase of tetragonal rutile-structure of TiO2. The refinement of the XRD patterns reveals no change in the crystallographic lattice parameters in comparison to pure TiO2 upon Mg do** and it indicates that Mg2+ ions do not enter core grains and form core/shell structure. SEM observations reveal the uniform morphology with nanometric grains in the range of 150-200 nm. The measurement of magnetic properties of these compounds indicates that pure TiO2 and Ti0.98Mg0.02 compounds exhibit paramagnetic behavior and Ti0.96Mg0.04 compound exhibits ferromagnetic (FM) phase superimposed with the dominating paramagnetic phase. However, Ti0.94Mg0.06 compound exhibits ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition with FM transition temperature of 180.2 K. The measurements of zero field and field cooled magnetization data indicate low temperature magnetic irreversibility for x=0.06 sample and it was attributed to the competing AFM (core) and the FM (shell) interactions. The measurement of hysteresis curves at various temperatures indicates domain wall pinning and an exchange-bias behavior.

In this work, we have studied Li-doped ZnO compounds, i.e. Zn1-xLixO (x=0, 0.02, 0.04, and 0.06) samples, prepared by the solid-state reaction route method. From the study of crystal structure using X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, it is evident that the prepared materials have been formed in a single-phase of the hexagonal wurtzite structure. The refinement of the XRD patterns suggests that there are very small changes in the lattice parameters upon Li-incorporation in ZnO. The average crystallite size (SC), estimated from XRD patterns was found to be in the range of 35-50 nm. The microstructural study by scanning electron microscope reveals the uniform morphology of the grains of the order of 50-70 nm. The energy dispersive spectrum indicates that no unwanted ferromagnetic impurities have crept into the final prepared samples. The measurement of the temperature (T) variation of magnetization (M) with SQUID magnetometer indicates that undoped ZnO exhibits diamagnetic property but all Li-doped compounds exhibit room-temperature ferromagnetism and with a magnetic irreversibility behavior between zero-field cooled and field cooled M-T data. From the magnetization versus field measurements at 3 and 300 K, it is observed that Li-doped samples exhibit ferromagnetic loops with ultra-soft coercivity (~50 Oe) and with a maximum saturation magnetization of 0.10 emu/gm for x= 0.02 sample, which decreases with the increase in Li concentration.

We report on the growth, structural and optical properties of YAlO3 single crystals grown by optical floating zone technique. Powder X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic studies confirm the phase purity of the crystals. Raman analysis reveals that the intensity and line-width of Raman bands increase significantly with beta irradiation indicating the formation of structural defects in YAlO3 lattice. The optical properties are studied through UV-visible absorption, and photoluminescence emission and excitation spectroscopies under pre- and post- beta irradiation. The optical studies indicate the presence of Sm and Cr impurities by exhibiting characteristic emission lines in the orange red region. Further, a systematic study on the thermoluminescence (TL) characteristics of the crystal is also carried out at different doses of beta irradiation. The crystals exhibit a prominent TL glow peak at 239 C for less than 5 Gy doses while a weak second glow peak evolves at higher doses. Also, the crystals show a nearly linear dose response in the studied range from 0.1 to 10 Gy. The glow curve analysis reveals that the TL emission obeys the first order kinetics model. Based on the optical studies, the plausible mechanism for the TL glow curve is discussed in terms of the intrinsic defects and impurities that are present in the crystal.

This paper deals with the spherically symmetric self-gravitating star which is considered to be expansion free dissipative perfect fluids distribution. Some recent research reveals that expansion free dynamical star must be accelerating and dissipating. We adopted some conjectures to obtain the analytical solution for the dynamical model of such stars. Firstly, it has shown that density of dynamical star is homogeneous and \Lamada-dominated under quasi-static diffusion approximation. Secondly, the self-similar solution is also discussed to describe the dynamical model.

Density functional theory calculations within the generalized gradient approximation are employed to study the ground state of Co2FeAl. Various magnetic configurations are considered to find out its most stable phase. The ferromagnetic ground state of the Co2FeAl is energetically observed with an optimized lattice constant of 5.70 Å. Thereafter, the system was subjected under uniform and non-uniform strains to see their effects on spin polarization (P) and half-metallicity. The effect of spin orbit coupling is considered in the present study. Half-metallicity (and 100 % P) is only retained under uniform strains started from 0 to +4%, and dropped rapidly from 90% to 16% for the negative strains started from -1% to -6%. We find that the present system is much sensitive under tetragonal distortions as half-metallicity (and 100% P) is preserved only for the cubic case. The main reason for the loss of half-metallicity is due to the shift of the bands with respect to the Fermi level. We also discuss the influence of these results on spintronics devices.

Co2FeAl (CFA) nanoparticles (NPs) of different sizes were synthesized by chemical route. The effect of the size of NPs upon the structure and magnetization compared to its bulk counterpart was investigated. The structure and composition were determined from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron microscopy. XRD analysis shows that the samples are having single (A2-type) disordered phase. Magnetization measurements suggest that the samples are soft ferromagnetic in nature with very low coercivity. Enhanced magnetic properties like saturation magnetization, coercive force, retentivity, and Curie-temperature are observed with a decrease in particle size. The effect of particle size on hysteresis losses is also discussed. The smallest particles of size 16 nm exhibited the highest saturation magnetization and transition temperature of 180.73 emu/g and 1261 K, respectively. The origin of enhancement in the magnetization of Co2FeAl nano-alloy is attributed to the strong Co-Co exchange interaction due to disorder present in the systems.

A giant magnetocaloric effect across the ferromagnetic (FM) to paramagnetic (PM) phase transition was observed in chemically synthesized Co2FeAl Heusler alloy nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 16 nm. In our previous report, we have observed a significant enhancement in its saturation magnetization (Ms) and Curie temperature (Tc) as compared with the bulk counterpart. Motivated from those results, here, we aim to explore its magnetocaloric properties near the Tc. The magnetic entropy change shows a positive anomaly at 1252 K. Magnetic entropy change increases linearly with the magnetic field, and a large value of ~15 J/Kg-K is detected under a moderate field of 14 kOe. It leads to a net relative cooling power of 89 J/Kg for the magnetic field change of 14 kOe. To confirm the nature of magnetic phase transition, a detailed study of its magnetization is performed. The Arrott plot and nature of the universal curve conclude that FM to PM phase transition in the present system is of second-order.

The unique structural features and suitability of the SiO2 micro particles in different application areas have mobilized a worldwide interest in the last few decades. In this report a classical method known as the Stober method has been used to synthesize silica micro spheres. These microparticles have been synthesized by the reaction of tetraethyl orthosilicate (Si(OC2H5)4, TEOS) (silica precursor) with water in an alcoholic medium (e.g. ethanol) in the presence of KCl electrolyte and ammonia as a catalyst. It has been observed that the size of the microparticles closely depends on the amount of the TEOS and ammonia. A decrease in the size of micro particles from 2.1 micrometer to 1.7 micrometer has been confirmed as the amount of TEOS increases from 3.5 ml to 6.4 ml respectively. In similar way a decrease in the diameter of the micro particles from 2.1 micrometer to 1.7 micrometer has been observed with increase in the ammonia content from 3 ml to 9 ml.

In Si nanowire (SiNW) solar cells enhanced light confinement property in addition to decoupling of charge carrier collection and light absorption directions plays a significant role to resolve the draw backs of bulk Si solar cells. In this report we have studied the dependence of the phovoltaic properties of Si NW array solar cells on the SiNW length and enhanced surface defect states as a result of enhanced surface area of the NWs. The SiNW arrays have been fabricated using metal catalyzed electroless etching (MCEE) technique. p-n junction has been produced by spin-on-dopant technique followed by thermal diffusion process. Front and rear electrodes have been deposited by e-beam evaporation techniques. SiNW lengths have been controlled from ~ 320 nm to 6.4 micro meter by controlling the parameters of MCEE technique. Photovoltaic properties of the solar cells have been characterized by measuring quantum efficiency and photocurrent density vs. voltage characteristics. Morphological studies have been carried out by using scanning electron microscopy. Reduction in light trap** capability comes at the benefit of reduced surface defects. The reduction of surface defects has been proved to be more advantageous in comparison to the decrement of light trap** capability. The major contribution to the changes in cell efficiency comes from the enhancement of short circuit current density with a very weak dependence on open circuit voltage. This work is beneficial for the production commercial Si solar cell where SiNW arrays could be used as a antireflection coating instead of using separate antireflection layers and thus could reduced the production cost.

The generalized gradient approximation (GGA) scheme in the first-principles calculations are used to study the effect of L21 and XA ordering on the phase stability, half-metallicity and magnetism of Co2FeAl (CFA) Heusler alloy. Various possible hypothetical structures: L21-I, L21-II, XA-I, and XA-II were prepared under the conventional L21 and inverse XA phases by altering the atomic occupancies at their Wyckoff sites. It is found that the XA-II phase of CFA is the most stable phase energetically among all the structures. The electronic structure calculations without U show the presence of half-metallic (HM) ground state only in L21-1 structure and the other structures are found to be metallic. However, the electronic structures of CFA are significantly modified in the presence of U, although the total magnetic moments per cell remained the same and consistent with the Slater-Pauling (SP) rule. The metallic ground states of CFA in L21-II and XA-II structures are converted into the half-metallic ground states in presence of U but remained the same (metallic) in XA-I structure. The results indicate that the electronic structures are not only dependent on the L21 and XA ordering of the atoms but also depend on the choice of U values. So experiments may only verify the superiority of GGA+U to GGA.

The physical properties of Fe2CoAl (FCA) Heusler alloy are systematically investigated using the first-principles calculations within generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and GGA+U. The influence of atomic ordering with respect to the Wyckoff sites on the phase stability, magnetism and half metallicity in both the conventional L21 and XA phases of FCA is focused in this study. Various possible hypothetical structures viz., L21, XA-I, and XA-II are prepared by altering atomic occupancies at their Wyckoff sites. At first, we have determined the stable phase of FCA considering various non-magnetic (or paramagnetic), ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) configurations. Out of these, the ferromagnetic (FM) XA-I structure is found to be energetically most stable. The total magnetic moments per cell are not in agreement with the Slater-Pauling (SP) rule in any phases; therefore, the half-metallicity is not observed in any configurations. However, FM ordered XA-I type FCA shows 78% spin polarization at EF. Interestingly, the results of XA-I type FCA are closely matched with the experimental results.

Thermal spike model (TSM) is presently a widely accepted mechanism of swift heavy ion (SHI) - matter interaction. It provides explanation to various SHI induced effects including mixing across interfaces. The model involves electron-phonon (e-p) coupling to predict the evolution of lattice temperature with time. SHI mixing is considered to be a result of diffusion in transient molten state thus achieved. In this work, we assess this conception primarily via tuning the e-p coupling strength by taking a series Pd$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$ of a completely solid soluble binary, and then observing 100 MeV Au ion induced mixing across Pd$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$/Si interfaces. The extent of mixing has been parametrised by the irradiation induced change $Δσ^2$ in variances of Pd and Ni depth profiles derived from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The $x$-dependence of $Δσ^2$ follows a curve that is concave upward with a prominent minimum. Theoretically, e-p coupling strength determined using density functional theory has been used to solve the equations appropriate to TSM, and then an equivalent quantity L$^2$ proportional to $Δσ^2$ has been calculated. L$^2$, however, increases monotonically with $x$ without any minimum, bringing out a convincing disparity between experiment and theory. Perhaps some mechanisms more than the TSM plus the transient molten state diffusion are operative, which can not be foreseen at this point of time.

Good quality single crystals of Pb2Bi2Te3, PbBi2Te4 and PbBi4Te7 are grown using the modified Bridgman technique. The Raman modes show progressive blue shift with the decrease in temperature from 298 K to 93 K in Pb2Bi2Te3, PbBi2Te4 and PbBi4Te7 is due to anharmonic vibrations of the lattice as well as increasing strength of Bi-Te covalent interactions. Experimental results are complemented by extensive density functional theory calculations where a reasonable matching between experimental and computational data is found. Chemical pressure, induces by the insertion of Pb and PbTe layers in Bi2Te3, modifies the interactions at the boundaries of the quintuple-layers which is evident from the evolution of mode. The enhancement of out-of-plane Bi-Te vibrations with respect to in-plane Bi-Te vibrations are observed at low temperatures.

The width of Pd $4d$ density of states (DOS) and centroid of Ni 3$d$ DOS show peak-like anomalies in the neighbourhood of $x_c$, and so indicate a possible scenario of the existence of a definite relation between the orbital hybridization and the emergence of quantum fluctuations in the system.

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films are synthesized on Si using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The role of substrate bias and nitrogen do** on the structural evolution and local elastic modulus of DLC films are systematically investigated. Raman spectroscopic studies reveal that the amount of graphitic C=C sp2 bonding increases with substrate bias and nitrogen do**. The density and hydrogen concentration in the films are found to vary from 0.7 to 2.2 g/cm3 and 16 to 38 atomic %, respectively, depending upon the substrate bias and nitrogen concentration in the DLC films. Atomic force acoustic microscopic (AFAM) analysis shows a direct correlation between local elastic modulus and structural properties estimated by Raman spectroscopy, Rutherford back scattering and elastic recoil detection analysis. AFAM analysis further confirms the evolution of soft second phases at high substrate biases (> -150V) in undoped DLC films. Further, N do** leads to formation of such soft second phases in DLC films even at lower substrate bias of -100 V. The AFAM studies provide a direct microscopic evidence for the "sub-implantation growth model" which predicts the formation of graphitic second phases in DLC matrix at high substrate biases.

Hybridization between Ce $f$ and conduction $d$ states has been speculatively known to be one of the mechanisms responsible for magnetic instability of the ferromagnetic ground state of CeFe$_2$. Substituting Fe by small amounts of certain elements stabilizes it to an antiferromagnetic state below the Curie temperature via a first-order second phase transition. In the present work, we seek any direct relation between the $f-d$ hybridization and the second transition by measuring primarily dc magnetization and Ce M$_{4,5}$ edge x-ray absorption spectra of Ce(Fe$_{1-x}$M$_x$)$_2$ pseudobinaries, with M = Cr, Ag and Au. X-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements are also performed essentially to monitor the quality of the samples. Whereas Cr impurity is found to cause the second transition, Ag and Au apparently do not induce any. In the former, the Curie and second transition temperatures vary systematically, but differently, with $x$. Our results imply that there is a definite proportionality between the $x$ dependences of the second transition temperature and the $f-d$ hybridization strength estimated qualitatively from the absorption spectra.

Metallic Ni$_{1-x}$V$_x$ alloys are known to exhibit a ferromagnetic to paramagnetic disordered quantum phase transition (QPT) at the critical concentration $x_c \sim$ 0.114 in bulk. Such a QPT is accompanied by a quantum Griffiths phase (QGP), the physical observables in which follow non-universal power-law temperature dependences, in a finite temperature range on the paramagnetic side of the transition. In the present work, we explore the occurrence of QGP in nanoparticles of this alloy system. Nanoalloys with $x$ in the neighbourhood of $x_c$ and mean diameter 18-33 nm were prepared by a chemical reflux method. Following a few microscopic and spectroscopic studies to determine the sizes, compositions and phases, dc magnetization measurements were also performed to seek out any signature of QGP in the nanoalloys. A paramagnetic-like increase of magnetization is observed to emerge below an $x$-dependent transition temperature $\rm{T_P} (\it{x})$ within the blocked ferromagnetic state of the nanoparticles, and is corroborated by a peak at $\rm{T_P} (\it{x})$ in the temperature dependence of resistivity. The magnetic susceptibility in this emergent phase follows a non-Curie power-law temperature dependence below 10 K for $0.09 \leq x \leq 0.14$, indicating the presence of a QGP in the nanoparticles within these temperature and composition ranges.

The Ti0.94A0.06O2 (A=Li, Mg, K) compounds have been synthesized via solid state route method at equilibrium. The structural analyses of X-ray diffraction pattern reveals that the do** of Li and Mg lead to Ti site substitution and K do** lead to core shell kind of structure. The magnetic property measurement by SQUID magnetometer indicate that all compounds exhibit weak paramagnetism with highest paramagnetic moment of ~ 0.3 MuB / ion for K doped compound but no long-range ferromagnetic ordering. We have discussed the observed magnetism in correlation with the nature of substitution.

The necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for the distributions allied to the characterization of a $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{R}$-anti-slant submanifold being integrable and totally geodesic foliation. In addition, we have defined $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{R}$-anti-slant warped product submanifold of $\widetilde{M}$ and gave some illustrations. Finally, we extracted the constraints for a submanifold of $\widetilde{M}$ to be a $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{R}$-anti-slant warped product of the form $F\times_{f}N_λ$.

Pd$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$ alloy system is an established ideal transition metal system possessing a composition induced paramagnetic to ferromagnetic quantum phase transition (QPT) at the critical concentration $x_c \sim$ 0.026 in bulk. A low-temperature non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behaviour around $x_c$ usually indicates the presence of quantum criticality (QC) in this system. In this work, we explore the existence of such a QPT in nanoparticles of this alloy system. We synthesized single-phase, polydispersed and 40-50 nm mean diameter crystalline nanoparticles of Pd$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$ alloys, with $x$ near $x_c$ and beyond, by a chemical reflux method. In addition to the determination of the size, composition, phase and crystallinity of the alloys by microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, the existence of a possible QPT was explored by resistivity and DC magnetization measurements. A dip in the value of the exponent $n$ near $x_c$, and a concomitant peak in the constant $A$, of the $AT^n$ dependence of the low temperature ($T$) resistivity indicate the presence of a quantum-like phase transition in the system. The minimum value of $n$, however, remains within the Fermi liquid regime ($n >$ 2). The DC magnetization results suggest an anticipatory presence of a superparamagnetic to ferromagnetic QPT in the mean-sized nanoparticles. The observation of a possible quantum critical NFL behaviour ($n <$ 2) through resistivity is argued to be inhibited by the electron-magnon scatterings present in the smaller nanoparticles.

In this work we demonstrate that the polycrystalline ribbons of (Ni48Co6)Mn26Al20 with B2 structure at room temperature show a magnetic behavior with competing magnetic exchange interactions leading to frozen disorders at low temperatures. It is established that by considering the presence of both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic sublattices, we can explain the observed magnetic behavior including the metamagnetic transition observed in these samples. From the Arrott plots, the Néel temperature of (Ni48Co6)Mn26Al20 is deduced to be ~170 K and the broad ferro to para like magnetic phase transition is observed at ~ 200 K. Based on Néel theory, a cluster model is used to explain the presence of ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic clusters in the studied ribbons. Formation of ferromagnetic clusters can be understood in terms of positive exchange interactions among the Mn atoms that are neighboring to Co atoms which are located on the Ni sites.

We address the possibility of non-magnetic do** induced magnetism, in Li doped SnO2 nano-particles. The compounds have been prepared by solid state route at equilibrium and were found to be crystallized in single rutile phase. The magnetization measurements have shown that Li-do** induces magnetism in SnO2 for a particular range of Li concentration. However, for other Li concentrations, including pure SnO2, the samples exhibit diamagnetism. To investigate the possible origin of the induced magnetism, we have studied the variation of the magnetization as a function of the average nano-particle radius. Possible scenarios for the appearance of magnetism in these compounds are discussed.
