Observations of soil moisture (SM) during excess and deficit monsoon seasons between 2000 to 2021 present a unique opportunity to understand the soil water dynamics (SWD) over core monsoon zone (CMZ) of India. This study aims to analyse SWD by investigating the SM variability, SM memory (SMM), and the coupling between the surface and subsurface SM levels. Particularly intriguing are instances of concurrent monsoonal extremes, which give rise to complex SWD patterns. Usually, it is noted that a depleted convective activity and persistence of higher temperatures during the pre-monsoon season leads to lower SM, while monsoon rains and post-monsoon showers support the prevalence of higher SM conditions. The long persistent dry spells during deficit monsoon years enhances the Bowen ratio (BR) due to the high sensible heat fluxes. On the other hand, the availability of large latent heat flux during excess monsoon and post-monsoon seasons tends to decrease the BR. This enhancement or reduction in BR is due to evapotranspiration (ET), which influences the SWD by modulating the surface subsurface SM coupling. The surface and subsurface SM coupling analysis for CMZ exhibits significant distinction in the evolution of wet and dry extremes. SM variations and persistence time scale is used as an indicator of SMM, and analysed for both surface and subsurface SM observation levels. Evidently, subsurface SM exhibits remarkably prolonged memory timescales, approximately twice that of surface SM. Furthermore, we dissect SWD linked to wet and dry extremes by analysing annual soil water balance (SWB). Our findings reveal augmented (diminished) ET during deficit (excess) years, subjected to a higher (lower) number of break events. In essence, our study underscores the significance of surface-subsurface SM observations in unravelling the intricate tapestry of SWD.

Abstract:
We study a certain class of arithmetic functions that appeared in Klurman's classification of $\pm 1$ multiplicative functions with bounded partial sums, c.f., Comp. This confirms a conjecture by the first author. As a byproduct of our proof, we studied the correlation between $Δ(x)$ and $Δ(θx)$, where $θ$ is a fixed real number. We prove that there is a non-trivial correlation when $θ$ is rational, and a decorrelation when $θ$ is irrational. Moreover, if $θ$ has a finite irrationality measure, then we can make it quantitative this decorrelation in terms of this measure.

The Large Volume Plasma Device (LVPD) has successfully demonstrated excitation of Electron Temperature Gradient (ETG) driven turbulence in finite plasma beta condition , where the threshold condition for ETG turbulence is satisfied. The observed mode follows wave-vector scaling and frequency ordering of ETG turbulence. Simultaneous measurement of fluctuations in electron temperature, $δT_e $, plasma density, $δn_e $ and potential,$δV_f $ are obtained. Strong negative correlation with correlation coefficients $ C_{δn_e δφ_f}\sim -0.8 $ and $ C_{δT_e δφ}\sim -0.9 $ are observed between density and potential and temperature and potential fluctuations, respectively. These correlated density, temperature and potential fluctuations lead to generation of turbulent heat flux. The measured heat flux is compared with theoretically estimated heat flux from ETG model equations. The experimental result shows that net heat flux is directed radially outward.

The observed ETG turbulence shows significant power between $ω\sim (25-90 krad/s )> Ω_{ci}(= 8 krad/s )$, corresponding to the wavenumber, $ k_y ρ_e ~ (0.1- 0.2)$ where, $ Ω_{ci}$ and $ρ_e(=5 mm ) $, ion cyclotron frequency and electron Larmor radius, respectively. The observed frequency and wave number matches well with theoretical estimates corresponding to Whistler-ETG mode. We investigated electromagnetic (EM) fluctuations induced plasma transport in high beta ( $ β\sim 0.01 - 0.4 $ ) ETG mode suitable plasma in LVPD. The radial electromagnetic (EM) electron (ion) flux ( $ Γ^{e,i}_{em} $) results primarily from the correlation between fluctuations of parallel electron current ($δJ_{\parallel ,e,i}$ ) and radial magnetic field ($ δB_r $ ). The electromagnetic particle flux is observed to be much smaller than the electrostatic particle flux,$ Γ_{em}\approx 10^{-5} Γ_{es} $ .The EM flux is small but finite contrary to the conventional slab ETG model. The electromagnetic flux is non-ambipolar. A theoretical model is obtained for the EM particle flux in straight homogeneous magnetic field geometry. The theoretical estimates are seen to compare well with the experimental observations. Sluggish parallel ion response is identified as the key mechanism for generation of small but finite electromagnetic flux.

The measured flux is dominantly electrostatic ($Γ_{es} \approx 10^{5} Γ_{em}$) although the nature of the measured turbulence is electromagnetic($β\approx 0.6 $). The turbulence has been established as a consequence of electron temperature gradient (ETG) driven modes. Experimental observations of phase angle between density ($ n_e $) and potential ($φ$) fluctuations, $ θ_{\tilde{n}_e, \tildeφ} $ and electrostatic particle flux, $ Γ_{es} $ shows good agreement with the corresponding theoretical estimates for ETG turbulence.

In his Classical approximation to the Twin prime problem, Selberg proved that for $x$ sufficiently large, there is an $n \in (x,2x)$ such that $2^{Ω(n)}+2^{Ω(n+2)} \leq λ$ with $λ=14$, where $Ω(n)$ is the number of prime factors of $n$ counted with multiplicity. By adopting Selberg's approach and using a refinement suggested by Selberg, we improve this value of $λ$ to about $λ=12.59$.
