We use this construction to construct, for every countable successor ordinal number $α$, an almost Dedekind domain $D$, integral over $V$ (the valuation domain of $v$) whose SP-rank is $α$. Subsequently, we extend this result to countable limit ordinal numbers by considering integral extensions of Dedekind domains with countably many maximal ideals.

Here, we investigate the temperature-dependent microphotoluminescence (PL) of 2D $(C_6H_5CH_2CH_2NH_3)_2Cs_3Pb_4Br_{13}$ HOIP subject to biaxial strain induced by a $SiO_2$ ring platform on which flakes are placed by viscoelastic stam**. At 80 K, we found that a strain of <1% can change the PL emission from a single peak (unstrained) to three well-resolved peaks. Supported by micro-Raman spectroscopy, we show that the thermomechanically generated strain modulates the bandgap due to changes in the octahedral tilting and lattice expansion. Mechanical simulations demonstrate the coexistence of tensile and compressive strain along the flake. The observed PL peaks add an interesting feature to the rich phenomenology of photoluminescence in 2D HOIPs, which can be exploited in tailored sensing and optoelectronic devices.

Understanding the structural and magnetic properties in layered hybrid organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites (HOIPs) is key for their design and integration in spin-electronic devices. Here, we have conducted a systematic study on ten compounds to understand the effect of the transition metal (Cu$^{2+}$, Mn$^{2+}$, Co$^{2+}$), organic spacer (alkyl- and aryl-ammonium) and perovskite phase (Ruddlesden-Popper and Dion-Jacobson) on the properties of these materials. Temperature-dependent Raman measurements show that the crystals' structural phase transitions are triggered by the motional freedom of the organic cations as well as by the flexibility of the inorganic metal-halide lattice. In the case of Cu$^{2+}$ HOIPs, an increase of the in-plane anisotropy and a reduction of the octahedra interlayer distance is found to change the behavior of the HOIP from that of a 2D ferromagnet to that of a quasi-3D antiferromagnet. Mn$^{2+}$ HOIPs show inherent antiferromagnetic octahedra intralayer interactions and a phenomenologically rich magnetism, presenting spin-canting, spin-flop transitions and metamagnetism controlled by the crystal anisotropy. Co$^{2+}$ crystals with non-linked tetrahedra show a dominant paramagnetic behavior irrespective of the organic spacer and the perovskite phase. This work demonstrates that the chemical flexibility of HOIPs can be exploited to develop novel layered magnetic materials with tailored magnetic properties.

Temperature dependence of vibrational modes in semiconductors depends on lattice thermal expansion and anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering. Evaluating the two contributions from experimental data is not straightforward, especially for epitaxial layers that present mechanical deformation and anisotropic lattice expansion. In this work, a temperature-dependent Raman study in epitaxial Ge and Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$ layers is presented. A model is introduced for the Raman mode energy shift as a function of temperature, comprising thermal expansion of the strained lattice and anharmonic corrections. With support of x-ray diffraction, the model is calibrated on experimental data of epitaxial Ge grown on Si and Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$ grown on Ge/Si, finding that the main difference between bulk and epitaxial layers is related to the anisotropic lattice expansion. The phonon anharmonicity and other parameters do not depend on dislocation defect density (in the range $7\cdot 10^6$ - $4\cdot 10^8$ cm$^{-2}$) nor on alloy composition in the range 5-14 at.%. The strain-shift coefficient for the main model of Ge and for the Ge-Ge vibrational mode of Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$ is weakly dependent on temperature and is around -500 cm$^{-1}$. In Ge$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$, the composition-shift coefficient amounts to -100 cm$^{-1}$, independent of temperature and strain.

The local ordering of atoms in alloys directly has a strong impact on their electronic and optical properties. This is particularly relevant in nonrandom alloys, especially if they are deposited using far from the equilibrium processes, as is the case of epitaxial Ge1-xSnx layers. In this work, we investigate the arrangement of Ge and Sn atoms in optoelectronic grade Ge1-xSnx epitaxial layers featuring a Sn content in the 5-14% range by using polarization-dependent Raman spectroscopy and density-functional-theory calculations. The thorough analysis of the polarization-dependent spectra in parallel and perpendicular configuration allowed us to properly tag all the observed vibrational modes, and to shed light on that associated to disorder-assisted Raman transitions. Indeed, with the help of large-scale atomistic simulations, we were able to highlight how the presence of Sn atoms, that modify the local environments of Ge atoms, gives rise to two spectral features at different Raman shifts, corresponding to distortions of the atomic bonds. This analysis provides a valuable framework for advancing the understanding of the vibrational properties in Ge1-xSnx alloys, particularly with regard to the impact of local ordering of the different atomic species.

Organometallic lead halide perovskites are highly efficient materials for solar cells and other optoelectronic applications due to their high quantum efficiency and exceptional semiconducting properties. A peculiarity of these perovskites is the substantial ionic motion under external forces. Here, we reveal that electric field-and light-induced ionic motion in MAPbX3 crystals (X=Cl, Br, I and MA=CH3NH3) leads to unexpected piezoelectric-like response, an order of magnitude larger than in ferroelectric perovskite oxides. The nominal macroscopic symmetry of the crystals is broken by redistribution of ionic species, which can be controlled deterministically by light and electric field. The revealed piezoelectric response is possibly present in other materials with significant ionic activity but the unique feature of organometallic perovskites is the strong effect on the piezoelectric response of interplay of ionic motion (MA+ and X-1) and photoelectrons generated with illumination.

We study almost Dedekind domains with respect to the failure of ideals to have radical factorization, that is, we study how to measure how far an almost Dedekind domain is from being an SP-domain. To do so, we consider the maximal space $\mathcal{M}=\mathrm{Max}(R)$ of an almost Dedekind domain $R$, interpreting its (fractional) ideals as maps from $\mathcal{M}$ to $\mathbb{Z}$, and looking at the continuity of these maps when $\mathcal{M}$ is endowed with the inverse topology and $\mathbb{Z}$ with the discrete topology. We generalize the concept of critical ideals by introducing a well-ordered chain of closed subsets of $\mathcal{M}$ (of which the set of critical ideals is the first step) and use it to define the class of \emph{SP-scattered domains}, which includes the almost Dedekind domains such that $\mathcal{M}$ is scattered and, in particular, the almost Dedekind domains such that $\mathcal{M}$ is countable. We show that for this class of rings the group $\mathrm{Inv}(R)$ is free by expressing it as a direct sum of groups of continuous maps, and that, for every length function $\ell$ on $R$ and every ideal $I$ of $R$, the length of $R/I$ is equal to the length of $R/\mathrm{rad}(I)$.

Piezoelectrics are materials that linearly deform in response to an applied electric field. As a fundamental prerequisite, piezoelectric material must possess a non centrosymmetric crystal structure. For more than a century, this remains the major obstacle for finding new piezoelectric materials. We circumvent this limitation by breaking the crystallographic symmetry, and inducing large and sustainable piezoelectric effects in centrosymmetric materials by electric field induced rearrangement of oxygen vacancies Surprisingly, the results show the generation of extraordinarily large piezoelectric responses d33 ~200,000 pm/V), in cubic fluorite Gd-doped CeO2-x films, which is two orders of magnitude larger than in the presently best known lead based piezoelectric relaxor ferroelectric oxide. These findings open opportunities to design new piezoelectric materials from environmentally friendly centrosymmetric ones.

Twinning is a common crystallographic phenomenon, which usually occurs in crystals during symmetry-lowering phase transition. Once formed, twin domains play an important role in defining physical properties: for example, twin domains underpin the giant piezoelectric effect in ferroelectrics, superelasticity in ferroelastics and the shape-memory effect in martensitic alloys. Unfortunately, there is still a lack of experimental methods for imaging and characterization of twin domain patterns. Here, we propose a theoretical framework and an algorithm for the recognition of twinned pairs of ferroelastic domains and the identification of the coherent twin relationship using high-resolution reciprocal space map** of X-ray diffraction intensity around split Bragg peaks. Specifically, we adapt the geometrical theory of twinned ferroelastic crystals (Fousek & Janovec, 1969) for the analysis of the X-ray diffraction patterns. We derive the necessary equations and outline an algorithm for calculation of the separation between the Bragg peaks, diffracted from possible coherent twin domains, connected to one another via mismatch-free interface. We demonstrate that such separation is always perpendicular to the planar interface between mechanically matched domains. As examples, we present the analysis of the separation between the peaks diffracted from tetragonal and rhombohedral domains in the high-resolution reciprocal space maps of BaTiO3 and PbZr1-xTixO3 crystals. The demonstrated method can be used to analyse the response of multi-domain patterns to external perturbations such as electric field, change of a temperature or pressure.

Among the large family of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), recently ReS2 has stood out due to its nearly layer-independent optoelectronic and physicochemical properties. These are related to its 1T distorted octahedral structure, which leads to strong in-plane anisotropy and the presence of active sites at its surface, which makes ReS2 interesting for applications such as gas sensors and catalysts for H2 production. However, the current fabrication methods for ReS2 use chemical or physical vapor deposition (CVD or PVD) processes that are costly and involve complex and lengthy fabrication procedures, therefore limiting their large-scale production and exploitation. To address this issue, we developed a colloidal synthesis approach, which allows the production of ReS2 to be attained at temperatures below 360 Celsius degrees and with reaction times < 2 h, resulting in a more cost-efficient strategy than the CVD and PVD methods. By combining the solution-based synthesis with surface functionalization strategies, we demonstrate the feasibility of colloidal ReS2 nanosheet films for gas sensing of different toxic gases, moisture and other volatile compounds with highly competitive performance in comparison with devices built with CVD-grown ReS2 and MoS2. In addition, the integration of the ReS2 nanosheet films in assemblies, in which they are deposited on top of networks of carbon nanotubes, allowed us to fabricate electrodes for electrocatalysis for H2 production in both acid and alkaline conditions. Results from proof-of-principle devices show an electrocatalytic overpotential that is competitive with devices based on ReS2 produced by CVD, and even with MoS2, WS2 and MoSe2 electrocatalysts.

Metamaterials have recently established a new paradigm for enhanced light absorption in state-of-the-art photodetectors. Here, we demonstrate broadband, highly efficient, polarization-insensitive, and gate-tunable photodetection at room temperature in a novel metadevice based on gold/graphene Sierpinski carpet plasmonic fractals. We observed an unprecedented internal quantum efficiency up to 100% from the near-infrared to the visible range with an upper bound of optical detectivity of $10^{11}$ Jones and a gain up to $10^{6}$, which is a fingerprint of multiple hot carriers photogenerated in graphene. Also, we show a 100-fold enhanced photodetection due to highly focused (up to a record factor of $|E/E_{0}|\approx20$ for graphene) electromagnetic fields induced by electrically tunable multimodal plasmons, spatially localized in self-similar fashion on the metasurface. Our findings give direct insight into the physical processes governing graphene plasmonic fractal metamaterials. The proposed structure represents a promising route for the realization of a broadband, compact, and active platform for future optoelectronic devices including multiband bio/chemical and light sensors.

Two-dimensional colloidal halide perovskite nanocrystals are promising materials for light emitting applications. In addition, they can be used as components to create a variety of materials through physical and chemical transformations. Recent studies focused on nanoplatelets that are able to self-assemble and transform on solid substrates. Yet, the mechanism behind the process and the atomic arrangement of their assemblies remain unclear. Here, we present the transformation of self-assembled stacks of CsPbBr$_3$ nanoplatelets in solution, capturing the different stages of the process by kee** the solutions at room temperature and monitoring the nanocrystal morphology over a period of a few months. Using ex-situ transmission electron microscopy and surface analysis, we demonstrate that the transformation mechanism can be understood as oriented attachment, proceeding through the following steps: i) desorption of the ligands from the particles surfaces, causing the merging of nanoplatelet stacks, which first form nanobelts; ii) merging of neighboring nanobelts that form more extended nanoplates; and iii) attachment of nanobelts and nanoplates, which create objects with an atomic structure that resemble a mosaic made of broken nanotiles. We reveal that the starting nanoplatelets merge seamlessly and defect-free on an atomic scale in small and thin nanobelts. However, aged nanobelts and nanoplates, which are mainly stabilized by amine/ammonium ions, link through a bilayer of CsBr. In this case, the atomic columns of neighboring perovskite lattices shift by a half-unit-cell, forming Ruddlesden-Popper planar faults.

Resistive switching memories allow electrical control of the conductivity of a material, by inducing a high resistance (OFF) or a low resistance (ON) state, using electrochemical and ion transport processes. As alternative to high temperature and vacuum-based physical sulphurization methods of silver (Ag), here we propose, as resistive switching medium, a layer built from colloidal Ag$_{2-x}$S nanocrystals -compatible with solution-processed approaches. The effect of the electrode size (from macro- to micro-scale), composition (Ag, Ti and Pt) and geometry on the device performance together with the electrochemical mechanisms involved are evaluated. We achieved an optimized Ag/Ti bowtie proof-of-concept configuration by e-beam lithography, which fulfils the general requirements for ReRAM devices in terms of low power consumption and reliable $I_{ON}/I_{OFF}$ ratio. This configuration demonstrates reproducible switching between ON and OFF states with data endurance of at least 20 cycles; and an $I_{ON}/I_{OFF}$ ratio up to 10$^3$ at low power consumption (0.1V readout), which outperforms previous results in literature for devices with resistive layers fabricated from silver chalcogenide nanoparticles.

Plasmonic metasurfaces have spawned the field of flat optics using nanostructured planar metallic or dielectric surfaces that can replace bulky optical elements and enhance the capabilities of traditional far-field optics. Furthermore, the potential of flat optics can go far beyond far-field modulation, and can be exploited for functionality in the near-field itself. Here, we design metasurfaces based on aperiodic arrays of plasmonic Au nanostructures for tailoring the optical near-field in the visible and near-infrared spectral range. The basic element of the arrays is a rhomboid that is modulated in size, orientation and position to achieve the desired functionality of the micron-size metasurface structure. Using two-photon-photoluminescence as a tool to probethe near-field profiles in the plane of the metasurfaces, we demonstrate the molding of light into different near-field intensity patterns and active pattern control via the far-field illumination. Finite element method simulations reveal that the near-field modulation occurs via a combination of the plasmonic resonances of the rhomboids and field enhancement in the nanoscale gaps in between the elements. This approach enables optical elements that can switch the near-field distribution across the metasurface via wavelength and polarization of the incident far-field light, and provides pathways for light matter interaction in integrated devices.

Under certain hypothesis, we show that we can associate to a prime ideal $P$ of $R$ a partially ordered set, constructed from some subgroups of the group of units of $R/P^n$, which is invariant under homeomorphisms, and use this result to show that the unique self-homeomorphisms of the Golomb space of $\mathbb{Z}$ are the identity and the multiplication by $-1$. We designed a novel pyrene-substituted thioethyl-porphyrazine (PzPy) and the formation of supramolecular assembly with nanocarbons demonstrating photoinduced electron transfer ability. As revealed by spectroscopic and electrochemical studies, PzPy displays wide spectral absorption in the visible range, charge separation upon photoexcitation, as well as bandgap and highest occupied/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO/LUMO) energy values, matching the key requirements of organic optoelectronic. Moreover, the presence of a pyrene moiety promotes attractive interactions with pi-conjugated systems. In particular, theoretical calculations show that in the PzPy the HOMO and LUMO are localized on different positions of the molecule, i.e., the HOMO on the pyrene moiety and the LUMO on the macrocycle. Therefore, HOMO-LUMO excitation gives rise to a charge separation, preventing excitons recombination. Two kinds of non-covalent hybrid composites are prepared by mixing the PzPy with single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and graphene nanoflakes (GNFs), respectively, and used for photocurrent generation through charge transfer processes between PzPy and nanocarbons. Photoconduction experiments show photocurrent generation upon visible light irradiation of both PzPy/SWNT and PzPy/GNF composites (0.78 and 0.71 mA/W at 500 nm, respectively), demonstrating their suitability for optoelectronic applications and light harvesting systems.

We report on room temperature THz detection by means of antenna-coupled field effect transistors fabricated by using epitaxial graphene grown on silicon carbide substrate. Two independent detection mechanisms are found: plasma wave assisted-detection and thermoelectric effect, which is ascribed to the presence of junctions along the FET channel. The superposition of the calculated functional dependence of both the plasmonic and thermoelectric photovoltages on the gate bias qualitatively well reproduces the measured photovoltages. Additionally, the sign reversal of the measured photovoltage demonstrates the stronger contribution of the plasmonic detection compared to the thermoelectric mechanism. Although responsivity improvement is necessary, these results demonstrate that plasmonic detectors fabricated by epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide are potential candidates for fast large area imaging of macroscopic samples.

Deterministic fractal antennas are employed to realize multimodal plasmonic devices. Such structures show strongly enhanced localized electromagnetic fields typically in the infrared range with a hierarchical spatial distribution. Realization of engineered fractal antennas operating in the optical regime would enable nanoplasmonic platforms for applications, such as energy harvesting, light sensing, and bio/chemical detection. Here, we introduce a novel plasmonic multiband metamaterial based on the Sierpinski carpet (SC) space-filling fractal, having a tunable and polarization-independent optical response, which exhibits multiple resonances from the visible to mid-infrared range. We investigate gold SCs fabricated by electron-beam lithography on CaF$_{2}$ and Si/SiO$_{2}$ substrates. Furthermore, we demonstrate that such resonances originate from diffraction-mediated localized surface plasmons, which can be tailored in deterministic fashion by tuning the shape, size, and position of the fractal elements. Moreover, our findings illustrate that SCs with high order of complexity present a strong and hierarchically distributed electromagnetic near-field of the plasmonic modes. Therefore, engineered plasmonic SCs provide an efficient strategy for the realization of compact active devices with a strong and broadband spectral response in the visible/mid-infrared range. We take advantage of such a technology by carrying out surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) on Brilliant Cresyl Blue molecules deposited onto plasmonic SCs. We achieve a broadband SERS enhancement factor up to $10^{4}$, thereby providing a proof-of-concept application for chemical diagnostics.

Motivated by a problem in the theory of integer-valued polynomials, we investigate the natural density of the solutions of equations of the form $θ_uu_q(n)+θ_ww_q(n)+θ_2\frac{n(n+1)}{2}+θ_1n+θ_0\equiv 0\bmod d$, where $d,q\geq 2$ are fixed integers, $θ_u,θ_w,θ_2,θ_1,θ_0$ are parameters and $u_q$ and $w_q$ are functions related to the $q$-adic valuations of the numbers between 1 and $n$. We show that the number of solutions of this equation in $[0,N)$ satisfies a recurrence relation, with which we can associate to any pair $(d,q)$ a stochastic matrix and a Markov chain. Using this interpretation, we calculate the density for the case $θ_u=θ_2=0$ and for the case $θ_u=1$, $θ_w=θ_2=θ_1=0$ and either $d|q$ or $d$ and $q$ are coprime.

Wilf's conjecture for numerical semigroups with large second generator
Authors:
Dario Spirito
Abstract:
We study Wilf's conjecture for numerical semigroups $S$ such that the second least generator $a_2$ of $S$ satisfies $a_2>\frac{c(S)+μ(S)}{3}$, where $c(S)$ is the conductor and $μ(S)$ the multiplicity of $S$. In particular, we show that for these semigroups Wilf's conjecture holds when the multiplicity is bounded by a quadratic function of the embedding dimension.

The sets of star and semistar operations on semilocal Prüfer domains
Authors:

Abstract:
We study the sets of semistar and star operation on a semilocal Prüfer domain, with an emphasis on which properties of the domain are enough to determine them. In particular, we show that these sets depend chiefly on the properties of the spectrum and of some localizations of the domain; we also show that, if the domain is $h$-local, the number of semistar operations grows as a polynomial in the n…

Towards a classification of stable semistar operations on a Prüfer domain
Authors:

Abstract:
We study stable semistar operations defined over a Prüfer domain, showing that, if every ideal of a Prüfer domain $R$ has only finitely many minimal primes, every such closure can be described through semistar operations defined on valuation overrings of $R$.

Non-compact subsets of the Zariski space of an integral domain
Authors:

Abstract:
Let $V$ be a minimal valuation overring of an integral domain $D$ and let $\mathrm{Zar}(D)$ be the Zariski space of the valuation overrings of $D$. Starting from a result in the theory of semistar operations, we prove a criterion under which the set $\mathrm{Zar}(D)\setminus\{V\}$ is not compact. We then use it to prove that, in many cases, $\mathrm{Zar}(D)$ is not a Noetherian space, and apply it…

We then use it to prove that, in many cases, $\mathrm{Zar}(D)$ is not a Noetherian space, and apply it to the study of the spaces of Kronecker function rings and of Noetherian overrings.
