The digital age introduced the Digital Ecological Niche (DEN), revolutionizing human interactions. The advent of Digital History (DHy) has marked a methodological shift in historical studies, tracing its roots to Babbage and Lovelace's 19th-century work on "coding" as a foundational communication process, fostering a new interaction paradigm between humans and machines, termed "person2persons2machines." This evolution, through digitization and informatization, builds upon ancient coding practices but was significantly advanced by Babbage and Lovelace's contributions to mathematical linguistic systems, laying the groundwork for Computer Science. This field, central to 20th-century mainframe interaction through programming languages and formalization, situates Digital History within a broader historical context. Here, coding and mathematical methodologies empower historians with advanced technologies for historical data preservation and analysis. Nonetheless, the extent to which computation and Turing machines can fully understand and interpret history remains a subject of debate.

Thanks to its heterogeneity, the Biscari Archive, one of the most representative family's archives in Sicily, in a new digital historical study, became a valuable set of computable data that can lead historians to reconstruct the history of the city of Catania and Sicily. Ignazio Paterno' Castello and his wife Anna, princes of Biscari, were the promoters of the city's reconstruction after the 1693 earthquake, both politically and culturally. How could the digital historical methodology fulfil the traditional Historiography gap about how this noble family built its mighty? As we know, Humanities cannot easily be encapsulated in a few understandable numbers and names. However, historians, boosting Artificial Intelligence, such as Transkribus, and applying Historical Networks Analysis could help computers infer computable meaning from the digitised historical primary source. The Turing Machine became the most powerful tool to help historians understand what happened in the Past and identify the actors in cities and places' cultural and political renewal.

This article examines the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the archival heritage digitization processes, specifically regarding the manuscripts' automatic transcription, their correction, and normalization. It highlights how digitality has compelled scholars to redefine Archive and History field and has facilitated the accessibility of analogue sources through digitization and integration into big data. The study focuses on two AI systems, namely Transkribus and ChatGPT, which enable efficient analysis and transcription of digitized sources. The article presents a test of ChatGPT, which was utilized to normalize the text of 366 letters stored in the Correspondence section of the Biscari Archive (Catania). Although the AI exhibited some limitations that resulted in inaccuracies, the corrected texts met expectations. Overall, the article concludes that digitization and AI can significantly enhance archival and historical research by allowing the analysis of vast amounts of data and the application of computational linguistic tools.

Homo-Loggatus. The anthropological condition of historians in the digital world

Computerization has created a digital ecological niche where humans live in a state of interconnection that modifies their Epigenetics. Within this hyper-datafied virtual space, the logged-in agent enhances their intellectual and rational abilities, giving rise to a new cognitive entity. Humans are evolving towards a new anthropological status that shifts the terms of the Digital History debate from History to the historian, compelling the latter to reflect on the positions of Fichte and Schelling regarding the mind-body-world relationship (ecological niche). This reflection leads to the possibility of overcoming the crisis of History imposed by presentism and the necessity of redefining the research methodology based on the new vision of the interconnection between the mind and the digital niche as an investigative tool.

This essay aims to bid analogue historians assume that digitisation is the first step to creating historical heritage based on the new language of Science: Computer Science. As we know, Humanities disciplines cannot easily be encapsulated in a few understandable numbers and names. However, historians must boost Artificial Intelligence (such as Transkribus) and Neural Networks to let the Machine infer meaning from the digitised historical primary source and become the most powerful tool to help historians understand what happened in the Past. Historians (collaborating with data scientists, expert annotators, librarians, archivists, and others, who are crucial to the successful management of digital data collection) have to create the primary ontology, starting from coding manuscripts into digital text, as the Biscari Archive (Italy) study case.

The Biscari Archive. A case study of the application of Transkribus tool
Authors:
Salvatore Spina
Abstract:
The Paterno' Castello Principi di Biscari Archive, preserved at the State Archives of Catania, amongst one of the most crucial family archives, is, in the light of a digital historical methodology, the best computable historical heritage for demonstrating the applicability of applying an HTR tool, such as Transkribus, to digitised historical documents.

We deal with a continuous-time Ehrenfest model defined over an extended star graph, defined as a lattice formed by the integers of $d$ semiaxis joined at the origin. The dynamics on each ray are regulated by linear transition rates, whereas the switching among rays at the origin occurs according to a general stochastic matrix. We perform a detailed investigation of the transient and asymptotic behavior of this process. We also obtain a diffusive approximation of the considered model, which leads to an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck diffusion process over a domain formed by semiaxis joined at the origin, named spider. We show that the approximating process possesses a truncated Gaussian stationary density. Finally, the goodness of the approximation is discussed through comparison of stationary distributions, means and variances.

We consider a discrete-time random walk on the nodes of an unbounded hexagonal lattice. We determine the probability generating functions, the transition probabilities and the relevant moments. The convergence of the stochastic process to a 2-dimensional Brownian motion is also discussed. Furthermore, we obtain some results on its asymptotic behavior making use of large deviation theory. Finally, we investigate the first-passage-time problem of the random walk through a vertical straight-line. Under suitable symmetry assumptions we are able to determine the first-passage-time probabilities in a closed form, which deserve interest in applied fields.

We propose a new deterministic growth model which captures certain features of both the Gompertz and Korf laws. We investigate its main properties, with special attention to the correction factor, the relative growth rate, the inflection point, the maximum specific growth rate, the lag time and the threshold crossing problem. Some data analytic examples and their performance are also considered. Furthermore, we study a stochastic counterpart of the proposed model, that is a linear time-inhomogeneous birth-death process whose mean behaves as the deterministic one. We obtain the transition probabilities, the moments and the population ultimate extinction probability for this process. We finally treat the special case of a simple birth process, which better mimics the proposed growth model.

Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) are major sources of magnetic storms on Earth and are therefore considered to be the most dangerous space weather events. The Observatories of Solar Corona and Active Regions (OSCAR) mission is designed to identify the 3D structure of coronal loops and to study the trigger mechanisms of CMEs in solar Active Regions (ARs) as well as their evolution and propagation processes in the inner heliosphere. It also aims to provide monitoring and forecasting of geo-effective CMEs and CIRs. OSCAR would contribute to significant advancements in the field of solar physics, improvements of the current CME prediction models, and provide data for reliable space weather forecasting. These objectives are achieved by utilising two spacecraft with identical instrumentation, located at a heliocentric orbital distance of 1~AU from the Sun. The spacecraft will be separated by an angle of 68$^{\circ}$ to provide optimum stereoscopic view of the solar corona. We study the feasibility of such a mission and propose a preliminary design for OSCAR.
