Generalized Lie Symmetries and Almost Regular Lagrangians: A Link Between Symmetry and Dynamics
Abstract: The generalized Lie symmetries of almost regular Lagrangians are studied, and their impact on the evolution of dynamical systems is determined. It is found that if the action has a generalized Lie symmetry, then the Lagrangian is necessarily singular; the converse is not true, as we show with a specific example. It is also found that the generalized Lie symmetry of the action is a Lie subgroup of… ▽ More

Dark Energy and Extending the Geodesic Equations of Motion: A Spectrum of Galactic Rotation Curves
Abstract: A recently proposed extension of the geodesic equations of motion, where the worldline traced by a test particle now depends on the scalar curvature, is used to study the formation of galaxies and galactic rotation curves. This extension is applied to the motion of a fluid in a spherical geometry, resulting in a set of evolution equations for the fluid in the nonrelativistic and weak gravity limit… ▽ More

Constrained Dynamics: Generalized Lie Symmetries, Singular Lagrangians, and the Passage to Hamiltonian Mechanics
Abstract: Guided by the symmetries of the Euler-Lagrange equations of motion, a study of the constrained dynamics of singular Lagrangians is presented. We find that these equations of motion admit a generalized Lie symmetry, and on the Lagrangian phase space the generators of this symmetry lie in the kernel of the Lagrangian two-form. Volatilities That Change with Time: The Temporal Behavior of the Distribution of Stock-Market Prices
Abstract: While the use of volatilities is pervasive throughout finance, our ability to determine the instantaneous volatility of stocks is nascent. Here, we present a method for measuring the temporal behavior of stocks, and show that stock prices for 24 DJIA stocks follow a stochastic process that describes an efficiently priced stock while using a volatility that changes deterministically with time. Dark Energy and Extending the Geodesic Equations of Motion: Its Construction and Experimental Constraints
Abstract: With the discovery of Dark Energy, $Λ_{DE}$, there is now a universal length scale, $\ell_{DE}=c/(Λ_{DE} G)^{1/2}$, associated with the universe that allows for an extension of the geodesic equations of motion. In this paper, we will study a specific class of such extensions, and show that contrary to expectations, they are not automatically ruled out by either theoretical considerations or experi… ▽ More

Dark Energy and Extending the Geodesic Equations of Motion: Connecting the Galactic and Cosmological Length Scales
Abstract: Recently, an extension of the geodesic equations of motion using the Dark Energy length scale was proposed. Here, we apply this extension to the analyzing the motion of test particles at the galactic scale and longer. A cosmological check of the extension is made using the observed rotational velocity curves and core sizes of 1393 spiral galaxies. We derive the density profile of a model galaxy us… ▽ More

Connecting the Galactic and Cosmological Scales: Dark Energy and the Cuspy-Core Problem
Abstract: We propose a solution to the `cuspy-core' problem by extending the geodesic equations of motion using the Dark Energy length scale $λ_{DE}=c/(Λ_{DE} G)^{1/2}$. This extension does not affect the motion of photons; gravitational lensing is unchanged. A cosmological check of the theory is made, and $σ_8$ is calculated to be $0.68_{\pm0.11}$, compared to $0.761_{-0.048}^{+0.049}$ for WMAP. We estim… ▽ More

Dark Energy and Structure Formation: Connecting the Galactic and Cosmological Length Scales
Abstract: On the cosmological length scale, recent measurements by WMAP have validated $Λ$CDM to a precision not see before in cosmology. Such is not the case on galactic length scales, however, where the `cuspy-core' problem has demonstrated our lack of understanding of structure formation. Differing Calculations of the Response of Matter-wave Interferometers to Gravitational Waves
Abstract: There now exists in the literature two different expressions for the phase shift of a matter-wave interferometer caused by the passage of a gravitation wave. The first, a commonly accepted expression that was first derived in the 1970s, is based on the traditional geodesic equation of motion (EOM) for a test particle. The second, a more recently derived expression, is based on the geodesic devia… ▽ More

A Crystal-based Matter-wave Interferometric Gravitational-wave Observatory
Abstract: It is shown that atom interferometry allows for the construction of MIGO, the Matter-wave Interferometric Gravitational-wave Observatory. MIGOs of the same sensitivity as LIGO or LISA are expected to be orders of magnitude smaller than either one. A design for MIGO using crystalline diffraction gratings is introduced, and its sensitivity is calculated.

Quantum Interference to Measure Spacetime Curvature: A Proposed Experiment at the Intersection of Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity

We show that the difference in the quantum phase $Δφ$ of an atom that can travel along two intersecting geodesics is given by $mR_{0i0j}/\hbar$ times the spacetime volume contained within the geodesics. Turning Bosons into Fermions: Exclusion Statistics, Fractional Statistics and the Simple Harmonic Oscillator
Abstract: Motivated by Haldane's exclusion statistics, we construct creation and annihilation operators for $g$-ons using a bosonic algebra. We find that $g$-ons appear due to the breaking of a descrete symmetry of the original bosonic system. This symmetry is intimately related to the braid group and we demonstrate a link between exclusion statistics and fractional statistics.
