Early investigation of Pólya urns considered drawing balls one at a time. In the last two decades, several authors considered multiple drawing in each step, but mostly for schemes on two colors. In this manuscript, we consider multiple drawing from urns of balls of multiple colors, formulating asymptotic theory for specific urn classes and addressing more applications.
The class we consider is affine and tenable, built around a "core" square matrix. An index for the drawing schema is derived from the eigenvalues of the core. We identify three regimes: small-, critical-, and large-index. In the small-index regime, we find an asymptotic Gaussian law. In the critical-index regime, we also find an asymptotic Gaussian law, albeit a difference in the scale factor, which involves logarithmic terms.
In both of these regimes, we have explicit forms for the structure of the mean and the covariance matrix of the composition vector (both exact and asymptotic). In all three regimes we have strong laws.

Inside the discipline of graph theory exists an extension known as the hypergraph. This generalization of graphs includes vertices along with hyperedges consisting of collections of two or more vertices. One well-studied application of this structure is that of the recursive tree, and we apply its framework within the context of hypergraphs to form hyperrecursive trees, an area that shows promise in network theory. However, when the global profile of these hyperrecursive trees is studied via recursive equations, its recursive nature develops a combinatorial explosion of sorts when deriving mixed moments for higher containment levels. One route to circumvent these issues is through using a special class of urn model, known as an affine urn model, which samples multiple balls at once while maintaining a structure such that the replacement criteria is based on a linear combination of the balls sampled within a draw.
We investigate the hyperrecursive tree through its global containment profile, observing the number of vertices found within a particular containment level, and given a set of $k$ containment levels, relate its structure to that of a similar affine urn model in order to derive the asymptotic evolution of its first two mixed moments. We then establish a multivariate central limit theorem for the number of vertices for the first $k$ containment levels. We produce simulations which support our theoretical findings and suggest a relatively quick rate of convergence.

This allows one to compute the black hole entropy without solving the supergravity equations of motion and provides a novel generalization of the attractor mechanism. We consider magnetically charged black holes in $AdS_4$ which have an $AdS_2\times M_2$ near horizon geometry, where $M_2$ is a sphere or a spindle, and we also obtain entropy functions for ungauged supergravity as a simple corollary. We derive analogous results for black strings and rings in $D=5$ supergravity which have an $AdS_3\times M_2$ near horizon geometry, and in this setting we derive an off-shell expression for the central charge of the dual $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$, $d=2$~SCFT.

The matrix model in turn arises by localization of the 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs, dual to the AdS$_4$ vacuum, on the black hole horizon geometry, which is a Riemann surface $Σ_g$ (or a spindle $Σ$). We identify the imaginary part $t$ of the continuously distributed eigenvalues in the matrix model, and their density function $ρ(t)$, with natural geometric quantities associated with the M-theory circle action $U(1)_M$ on the near-horizon geometry AdS$_2\times Y_9$, the internal space $Y_9$ being a $Y_7$ fibration over $Σ_g$ (or $Σ$). Moreover, we argue that the points where $ρ'(t)$ is discontinuous match with the classical action of BPS probe M2-branes wrap** AdS$_2$ and the M-theory circle. We illustrate our findings with the ABJM and ADHM theories, whose duals have $Y_7 = S^7/\mathbb{Z}_k$, and some of their flavoured variants corresponding to other toric $Y_7$.

These may in turn be used to impose flux quantization and compute observables for supergravity solutions, using only topological information and the Berline--Vergne--Atiyah--Bott fixed point formula. We illustrate the formalism by considering $AdS_5\times M_6$ and $AdS_3\times M_8$ solutions of $D=11$ supergravity. We develop various geometric methods for computing the gravitational block contributions, allowing us to recover previously known results for various explicit supergravity solutions, and to significantly generalize these results to other compactifications. For the AdS$_3$ solutions we give a general proof that our off-shell supersymmetric action agrees with an appropriate off-shell $c$-function in the dual field theory, establishing a very general exact result in holography. In the context of holography, we analyse aspects of supersymmetric geometries based on two-dimensional orbifolds known as spindles. By analysing spin$^c$ spinors on a spindle with an azimuthal rotation symmetry we show that under rather general conditions there are just two possibilities, called the `twist' and the `anti-twist', which are determined by the quantized magnetic flux through the spindle. A special case of the twist is the standard topological twist which is associated with constant and chiral spinors. We construct solutions of $D=5$ and $D=4$ STU gauged supergravity theories that are dual to D3-branes and M2-branes wrap** spindles, respectively, which realize both the anti-twist, as seen before, but also the twist. For the wrapped D3-brane solutions we reproduce the central charge of the gravity solution from the dual field theory by analysing the anomaly polynomial of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory. We also discuss M5-branes wrapped on spindles both from a gravity and a field theory point of view.

We argue that these arise as near horizon limits of extremal dyonically charged rotating and accelerating supersymmetric black holes in AdS$_4$, that we conjecture to exist. We demonstrate this in the non-rotating limit, constructing the accelerating black hole solutions and showing that the non-spinning spindle solutions arise as the near horizon limit of the supersymmetric and extremal sub-class of these black holes. From the near horizon solutions we compute the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black holes as a function of the conserved charges, and show that this may equivalently be obtained by extremizing a simple entropy function. For appropriately quantized magnetic fluxes, the solutions uplift on $S^7$, or its ${\cal N}=4$ orbifolds $S^7/Γ$, to smooth supersymmetric solutions to $D=11$ supergravity, where the entropy is expected to count microstates of the theory on $N$ M2-branes wrapped on a spinning spindle, in the large $N$ limit.

We focus on the class for which the black hole horizon is a spindle and can be uplifted on regular Sasaki-Einstein spaces to give solutions of $D=11$ supergravity that are free from conical singularities. We use holography to calculate the Euclidean on-shell action and to define a set of conserved charges which give rise to a first law. We identify a complex locus of supersymmetric and non-extremal solutions, defined through an analytic continuation of the parameters, upon which we obtain a simple expression for the on-shell action. A Legendre transform of this action combined with a reality constraint then leads to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for the class of supersymmetric and extremal black holes.

We investigate vertex levels of containment in a random hypergraph grown in the spirit of a recursive tree. We consider a local profile tracking the evolution of the containment of a particular vertex over time, and a global profile concerned about counts of the number of vertices of a particular containment level.
For the local containment profile, we obtain the exact mean, variance and probability distribution in terms of standard combinatorial quantities like generalized harmonic numbers and Stirling numbers of the first kind. Asymptotically, we observe phases: the early vertices have an asymptotically normal distribution, intermediate vertices have a Poisson distribution, and late vertices have a degenerate distribution.
As for the global containment profile, we establish an asymptotically normal distribution for the number of vertices at the smallest containment level as well as their covariances with the number of vertices at the second smallest containment level and the variances of these numbers.

These are solutions of $D=4$ Einstein-Maxwell theory with a negative cosmological constant and hence minimal $D=4$ gauged supergravity. It is well known that when the acceleration is non-vanishing the $D=4$ black hole metrics have conical singularities. By uplifting the solutions to $D=11$ supergravity using a regular Sasaki-Einstein $7$-manifold, $SE_7$, we show how the free parameters can be chosen to eliminate the conical singularities. Topologically, the $D=11$ solutions incorporate an $SE_7$ fibration over a two-dimensional weighted projective space, $\mathbb{WCP}^1_{[n_-,n_+]}$, also known as a spindle, which is labelled by two integers that determine the conical singularities of the $D=4$ metrics. We also discuss the supersymmetric and extremal limit and show that the near horizon limit gives rise to a new family of regular supersymmetric $AdS_2\times Y_9$ solutions of $D=11$ supergravity, which generalise a known family by the addition of a rotation parameter. We calculate the entropy of these black holes and argue that it should be possible to derive this from certain ${\cal N}=2$, $d=3$ quiver gauge theories compactified on a spinning spindle with appropriate magnetic flux.

In particular, this allows one to compute the central charge and entropy of the holographically dual $(0,2)$ SCFT and dual superconformal quantum mechanics, respectively, without knowing the explicit form of the $Y_7$ or $Y_9$ geometry. We illustrate with a number of examples, finding agreement with explicit supergravity solutions in cases where these are known, and we also obtain new results. In addition we present, en passant, new formulae for calculating the volumes of Sasaki-Einstein manifolds.

We relate this problem to geometry of coassociative submanifolds in $G_2$ holonomy spaces and to $Spin(7)$ metrics on 8-manifolds with $T^2$ fibrations. As an application to physics, we propose a large class of brane models in type IIA string theory that generalize brane brick models on the one hand and 2d theories $T[M_4]$ on the other.

We derive a simple formula for the action of any supersymmetric solution to minimal gauged supergravity in the AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$ correspondence. Such solutions are equipped with a supersymmetric Killing vector, and we show that the holographically renormalized action may be expressed entirely in terms of the weights of this vector field at its fixed points, together with certain topological data. In this sense, the classical gravitational partition function localizes in the bulk. We illustrate our general formula with a number of explicit examples, in which exact dual field theory computations are also available, which include supersymmetric Taub-NUT and Taub-bolt type spacetimes, as well as black hole solutions. Our simple topological formula also allows us to write down the action of any solution, provided it exists.

We consider $d=3$, $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories arising on membranes sitting at the apex of an arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau 4-fold cone singularity that are then further compactified on a Riemann surface, $Σ_g$, with a topological twist that preserves two supersymmetries. If the theories flow to a superconformal quantum mechanics in the infrared, then they have a $D=11$ supergravity dual of the form AdS$_2\times Y_9$, with electric four-form flux and where $Y_9$ is topologically a fibration of a Sasakian $Y_7$ over $Σ_g$. These $D=11$ solutions are also expected to arise as the near horizon limit of magnetically charged black holes in AdS$_4\times Y_7$, with a Sasaki-Einstein metric on $Y_7$. We show that an off-shell entropy function for the dual AdS$_2$ solutions may be computed using the toric data and Kähler class parameters of the Calabi-Yau 4-fold, that are encoded in a master volume, as well as a set of integers that determine the fibration of $Y_7$ over $Σ_g$ and a Kähler class parameter for $Σ_g$. We also discuss the class of supersymmetric AdS$_3\times Y_7$ solutions of type IIB supergravity with five-form flux only in the case that $Y_7$ is toric, and show how the off-shell central charge of the dual field theory can be obtained from the toric data. We illustrate with several examples, finding agreement both with explicit supergravity solutions as well as with some known field theory results concerning ${\cal I}$-extremization.

We consider D3-brane gauge theories at an arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold cone singularity that are then further compactified on a Riemann surface $Σ_g$, with an arbitrary partial topological twist for the global $U(1)$ symmetries. This constitutes a rich, infinite class of two-dimensional $(0,2)$ theories. Under the assumption that such a theory flows to a SCFT, we show that the supergravity formulas for the central charge and $R$-charges of BPS baryonic operators of the dual AdS$_3$ solution may be computed using only the toric data of the Calabi-Yau 3-fold and the topological twist parameters. We exemplify the procedure for both the $Y^{p,q}$ and $X^{p,q}$ 3-fold singularities, along with their associated dual quiver gauge theories, showing that the new supergravity results perfectly match the field theory results obtained using $c$-extremization, for arbitrary twist over $Σ_g$. We furthermore conjecture that the trial central charge $\mathscr{Z}$, which we define in gravity, matches the field theory trial $c$-function off-shell, and show this holds in non-trivial examples. Finally, we check our general geometric formulae against a number of explicitly known supergravity solutions.

The geometry of $Y_{2n+1}$, which can be defined for $n\ge 3$, shares many similarities with Sasaki-Einstein geometry, including the existence of a canonical R-symmetry Killing vector, but there are also some crucial differences. We show that the R-symmetry Killing vector may be determined by extremizing a function that depends only on certain global, topological data. In particular, assuming it exists, for $n=3$ one can compute the central charge of an AdS$_3 \times Y_7$ solution without knowing its explicit form. We interpret this as a geometric dual of $c$-extremization in $(0,2)$ SCFTs. For the case of AdS$_2 \times Y_9$ solutions we show that the extremal problem can be used to obtain properties of the dual quantum mechanics, including obtaining the entropy of a class of supersymmetric black holes in AdS$_4$. We also study many specific examples of the type AdS$_3\times T^2 \times Y_5$, including a new family of explicit supergravity solutions. In addition we discuss the possibility that the $(0,2)$ SCFTs dual to these solutions can arise from the compactification on $T^2$ of certain $d=4$ quiver gauge theories associated with five-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein metrics and, surprisingly, come to a negative conclusion.

We define and study a holographic dual to the topological twist of $\mathcal{N}=4$ gauge theories on Riemannian three-manifolds. The gravity duals are solutions to four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ gauged supergravity, where the three-manifold arises as a conformal boundary. Following our previous work, we show that the renormalized gravitational free energy of such solutions is independent of the boundary three-metric, as required for a topological theory. We then go further, analyzing the geometry of supersymmetric bulk solutions. Remarkably, we are able to show that the gravitational free energy of any smooth four-manifold filling of any three-manifold is always zero. Aided by this analysis, we prove a similar result for topological AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$. We comment on the implications of these results for the large $N$ limits of topologically twisted gauge theories in three and four dimensions, including the ABJM theory and $\mathcal{N}=4$ $SU(N)$ super-Yang-Mills, respectively.

We show that the latter is independent of the metric on the boundary four-manifold, as required for a topological theory. Supersymmetric solutions in the bulk satisfy first order differential equations for a twisted $Sp(1)$ structure, which extends the quaternionic Kahler structure that exists on any Riemannian four-manifold boundary. Holographic renormalization is a systematic procedure for regulating divergences in observables in asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes. For dual boundary field theories which are supersymmetric it is natural to ask whether this defines a supersymmetric renormalization scheme. Recent results in localization have brought this question into sharp focus: rigid supersymmetry on a curved boundary requires specific geometric structures, and general arguments imply that BPS observables, such as the partition function, are invariant under certain deformations of these structures. One can then ask if the dual holographic observables are similarly invariant. We study this question in minimal N = 2 gauged supergravity in four and five dimensions. In four dimensions we show that holographic renormalization precisely reproduces the expected field theory results. In five dimensions we find that no choice of standard holographic counterterms is compatible with supersymmetry, which leads us to introduce novel finite boundary terms. For a class of solutions satisfying certain topological assumptions we provide some independent tests of these new boundary terms, in particular showing that they reproduce the expected VEVs of conserved charges.

The supersymmetric Casimir energy may then be identified as a limit of an index-character that counts these modes. In particular this explains a recent observation relating $E_\mathrm{susy}$ on $S^1\times S^3$ to the anomaly polynomial. As further applications we compute $E_\mathrm{susy}$ for certain secondary Hopf surfaces, and discuss how the index-character may also be used to compute generalized supersymmetric indices.

We compute the free energy F of the gauge theory on S^3 using localization. In the large N limit we find F = c(nN)^{1/3}a^{2/3}, where c is a universal constant and a is the a-function of the "parent" four-dimensional N = 1 theory on N D3-branes probing the same Calabi-Yau singularity. It follows that maximizing F over the space of admissible R-symmetries is equivalent to maximizing a for this class of theories. Moreover, we show that the gauge theory result precisely matches the holographic free energy of the supergravity solution, and provide a similar matching of the VEV of a BPS Wilson loop operator.

We show that the Taub-NUT-AdS solutions always lift to solutions of M-theory, and correspondingly that the gravitational free energy then agrees with the large N limit of the dual field theory free energy, obtained from the localized partition function of a class of N=2 Chern-Simons-matter theories. However, the solutions of Taub-Bolt-AdS type only lift to M-theory for appropriate classes of internal manifold, meaning that these solutions exist only for corresponding classes of three-dimensional N=2 field theories.

We analyse the most general N=2 supersymmetric solutions of D=11 supergravity consisting of a warped product of four-dimensional anti-de-Sitter space with a seven-dimensional Riemannian manifold Y_7. We show that the necessary and sufficient conditions for supersymmetry can be phrased in terms of a local SU(2)-structure on Y_7. Solutions with non-zero M2-brane charge also admit a canonical contact structure, in terms of which many physical quantities can be expressed, including the free energy and the scaling dimensions of operators dual to supersymmetric wrapped M5-branes. We show that a special class of solutions is singled out by imposing an additional symmetry, for which the problem reduces to solving a second order non-linear ODE. As well as recovering a known class of solutions, that includes the IR fixed point of a mass deformation of the ABJM theory, we also find new solutions which are dual to cubic deformations. In particular, we find a new supersymmetric warped AdS_4 x S^7 solution with non-trivial four-form flux.

We study the matrix model both numerically and analytically in the large N limit, finding that a certain family of p flat connections give an equal dominant contribution. At large N we find the same eigenvalue distribution for all p, and show that the free energy is simply 1/p times the free energy on a three-sphere, in agreement with gravity dual expectations.

This is described by a 1/2 BPS Euclidean solution of four-dimensional N=2 gauged supergravity, consisting of a Taub-NUT-AdS metric with a non-trivial instanton for the graviphoton field. The holographic free energy of this solution agrees precisely with the large N limit of the free energy obtained from the localized partition function of a class of Chern-Simons quiver gauge theories. We also discuss a different supersymmetric solution, whose boundary is a biaxially squashed Lens space S^3/Z_2 with a topologically non-trivial background gauge field. This metric is of Eguchi-Hanson-AdS type, although it is not Einstein, and has a single unit of gauge field flux through the S^2 cycle.

This is described by a supersymmetric solution of four-dimensional N=2 gauged supergravity with a non-trivial instanton for the graviphoton field. The particular gauge theory in turn determines the lift to a solution of eleven-dimensional supergravity. We compute the partition function for a class of Chern-Simons quiver gauge theories on both sides of the duality, in the large N limit, finding precise agreement for the functional dependence on the squashing parameter. This constitutes an exact check of the gauge/gravity correspondence in a non-conformally invariant setting.

We study the matrix models that result from localization of the partition functions of N=2 Chern-Simons-matter theories on the three-sphere. A large class of such theories are conjectured to be holographically dual to M-theory on Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifolds. We study the M-theory limit (large N and fixed Chern-Simons levels) of these matrix models for various examples, and show that in this limit the free energy reproduces the expected AdS/CFT result of N^{3/2}/Vol(Y)^{1/2}, where Vol(Y) is the volume of the corresponding Sasaki-Einstein metric. More generally we conjecture a relation between the large N limit of the partition function, interpreted as a function of trial R-charges, and the volumes of Sasakian metrics on links of Calabi-Yau four-fold singularities. We verify this conjecture for a family of U(N)^2 Chern-Simons quivers based on M2 branes at hypersurface singularities, and for a U(N)^3 theory based on M2 branes at a toric singularity.

We study the general structure of the AdS_5/CFT_4 correspondence in type IIB string theory from the perspective of generalized geometry. We begin by defining a notion of "generalized Sasakian geometry," which consists of a contact structure together with a differential system for three symplectic forms on the four-dimensional transverse space to the Reeb vector field. A generalized Sasakian manifold which satisfies an additional "Einstein" condition provides a general supersymmetric AdS_5 solution of type IIB supergravity with fluxes. We then show that the supergravity action restricted to a space of generalized Sasakian structures is simply the contact volume, and that its minimization determines the Reeb vector field for such a solution. We conjecture that this contact volume is equal to the inverse of the trial central charge whose maximization determines the R-symmetry of any four-dimensional N=1 superconformal field theory. This variational procedure allows us to compute the contact volumes for a predicted infinite family of solutions, and we find perfect agreement with the central charges and R-charges of BPS operators in the dual mass-deformed generalized conifold theories.

In particular, we use this method to construct one-parameter non-Kahler deformations of Calabi-Yau manifolds with a U(1) isometry, in which the complex structure remains invariant. We explain how to obtain corresponding solutions to heterotic string theory, up to first order in α', by a modified form of the standard embedding. In the course of the paper we also show that Abelian heterotic supergravity embeds into type II supergravity, and note that the solution-generating method in this context is related to a dipole-type deformation when there is a field theory dual.
