We report high-resolution dilatometry studies on single crystals of the Shastry-Sutherland-lattice magnet NdB$_4$ supported by specific heat and magnetometry data. Our dilatometric studies evidence pronounced anomalies at the phase boundaries which imply strong magneto-elastic coupling. The evolution of the three zero-field phase transitions separating distinct antiferromagnetic phases at $TN=17.2$~K, $TIT=6.8$~K and $TLT=4.8$~K can thus be traced in applied magnetic fields which provides the magnetic phase diagrams for $B\parallel c$ up to 15~T and for $B\parallel [110]$ up to 35~T. New in-field phases are discovered for both field directions and already known phases are confirmed. In particular, phase boundaries between different phases are unambiguously shown by sign changes of observed anomalies and corresponding changes in uniaxial pressure effects. For $B||c$, we find a 1/4-magnetization plateau in addition to a previously reported plateau at 1/5 of the saturation magnetization. TN increases for $B\parallel c$ in fields up to 15~T implying that magnetic moments of the all-in/all-out structure in the high temperature AFM ordered phase are driven towards the $c$ axis in high magnetic fields. Uniaxial pressure dependencies ${\partial}T_{\mathrm{crit}}/{\partial}p_{\mathrm{c}}$ of the phase transition temperatures for magnetic fields and pressure applied along the $c$ axis are derived from the data.

Single crystals of Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ were studied by high-resolution capacitance dilatometry to obtain in-plane ($B\parallel ab$) and out-of-plane ($B\parallel c$) thermal expansion and magnetostriction at temperatures between 2 and 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 15 T. The anomalies in both response functions lead to the 'magnetoelastic' phase diagrams and separate the paramagnetic (PM), ferromagnetic low-temperature/low-field (LTF) and aligned ferromagnetic (FM) phases. The presence of two distinct thermal expansion anomalies at small fields $B\parallel ab$ of different magnetic field dependence clearly supports the scenario of an intermediate region separating PM and LTF phases and is indicative of a tricritical point. Simulations of the magnetostriction using the Stoner-Wohlfarth model for uniaxial anisotropy demonstrate that the observed quadratic-in-field behavior in the LTF phase is in line with a rotation of the spins from the preferred $c$ direction into the $ab$ plane. Both the LTF and the PM phase close to T$_{\rm C}$ exhibit very strong pressure dependencies of the magnetization, ${\partial}\ln{M_{\rm ab}}/{\partial}p_{\rm ab}$, of several hundred %/GPa and also the transition from the LTF to the FM phase strongly depends on $p_{\rm ab}$ ($\sim -$280%/GPa), indicating a strong decrease of the uniaxial anisotropy under applied in-plane pressure. Our data clearly demonstrate the relevance of critical fluctuations and magnetoelastic coupling in Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$.

Pronounced magnetoelastic coupling is found upon evolution of long-range antiferromagnetic order at T$_{\mathrm{N}} = 26.4(3)$ K. Grüneisen analysis reveals moderate effects of uniaxial pressure on T$_{\mathrm{N}}$, of $1.8(4)$ K/GPa, $-0.62(15)$ K/GPa and $0.33(10)$ K/GPa for $p \parallel a$, $b$, and $c$, respectively. Below 22 K, Grüneisen scaling fails which implies the presence of competing interactions. The structural phase transition at T$_{\mathrm{S}} = 120.7(5)$ K is much more sensitive to uniaxial pressure than T$_{\mathrm{N}}$, with strong effects of up to $27(3)$ K/GPa ($p \parallel c$). Magnetostriction and magnetization measurements reveal a linear magnetoelastic coupling for $B\parallel c$ below T$_{\mathrm{N}}$, as well as a mixed phase behavior above the tricritical point around 0.4 T. An analysis of the critical behavior in zero-field points to three-dimensional (3D) Ising-like magnetic ordering. In addition, the magnetic phase diagrams for fields along the main crystalline axes are reported.

Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ is a quasi-2D semiconducting van der Waals ferromagnet down to the bilayer with great potential for technological applications. Engineering the critical temperature to achieve room temperature applications is one of the critical next steps on this path. Here, we report high-resolution capacitance dilatometry studies on Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ single crystals which directly prove significant magnetoelastic coupling and provide quantitative values of the large uniaxial pressure effects on long-range magnetic order (${\partial}T_{\mathrm{C}}/{\partial}p_{\mathrm{c}}$ = 24.7 K/GPa and ${\partial}T_{\mathrm{C}}/{\partial}p_{\mathrm{ab}}$ = $-$15.6 K/GPa) derived from thermodynamic relations. Moderate in-plane strain is thus sufficient to strongly enhance ferromagnetism in Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ up to room temperature. Moreover, unambiguous signs for short-range magnetic order up to 200~K are found.

Magnetoelastic coupling and uniaxial pressure dependencies of the ferromagnetic ordering temperature in the quasi-two-dimensional layered van-der-Waals material CrI$_3$ are experimentally studied and quantified by high-resolution dilatometry. Clear anomalies in the thermal expansion coefficients at $T_{\rm C}$ imply positive (negative) pressure dependencies $\partial T_{\rm C}/\partial p_{\rm i}$ for pressure applied along (perpendicular to) the $c$ axis. The experimental results are backed up by numerical studies showing that the dominant, intra-layer magnetic coupling increases upon compression along the $c$ direction and decreases with negative in-plane strain. In contrast, inter-layer exchange is shown to initially increase and subsequently decrease upon the application of both out-of-plane and in-plane compression.

We report detailed thermodynamic studies on high-quality single crystals of the centrosymmetric skyrmion-hosting intermetallic Gd2PdSi3 by means of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry in fields up to 15 T which are complemented by specific heat and magnetization studies. Our dilatometric measurements show magnetoelastic effects associated with antiferromagnetic order at TN1 = 22.3 K and TN2 = 19.7 K, as well as strong field effects in an applied magnetic field of 15 Tup to 200 K (150 K) for B||c (B||a*, i.e. B perp c). The data allow us to complete the magneticphase diagram, including a new feature at T* approx 12 K below which a new degree of freedom becomesrelevant. For the first time, the magnetic B vs. T phase diagram for the a*-axis is also reported. Grüneisen analysis shows the onset of magnetic contributions around 60 K, i.e., well above TN1. Uniaxial pressure dependencies of opposite sign, -1.3 K/GPa and 0.3 K/GPa, are extracted for the out-of-plane and in-plane directions at TN1. For T* we obtain dT*/dpc= 1.4 K/GPa. In particular we elucidate thermodynamic properties of the recently discovered skyrmion lattice phase and show that it is strongly enhanced by uniaxial pressure.

We report high-resolution capacitance dilatometry studies on the uniaxial length changes in a NdB$_4$ single crystal. The evolution of magnetically ordered phases below $T_{\rm N}$= 17.2~K (commensurate antiferromagnetic phase, cAFM), $T_{\rm IT}$= 6.8~K (intermediate incommensurate phase, IT), and $T_{\rm LT}$= 4.8~K (low-temperature phase, LT) is associated with pronounced anomalies in the thermal expansion coefficients. The data imply significant magneto-elastic coupling and evidence of a structural phase transition at $T_{\rm LT}$ . While both cAFM and LT favor structural anisotropy $δ$ between in-plane and out-of-plane length changes, it competes with the IT-type of order, i.e., $δ$ is suppressed in that phase. Notably, finite anisotropy well above $T_{\rm N}$ indicates short-range correlations which are, however, of neither cAFM, IT, nor LT-type. Grüneisen analysis of the ratio of thermal expansion coefficient and specific heat enables the derivation of uniaxial as well as hydrostatic pressure dependencies. While $α$/$c_{\rm p}$ evidences a single dominant energy scale in LT, our data imply precursory fluctuations of a competing phase in IT and cAFM, respectively. Our results suggest the presence of orbital degrees of freedom competing with cAFM and successive evolution of a magnetically and orbitally ordered ground state.

We investigate the low temperature structural and physical properties of the trilayer nickelates R4Ni3O10 (R = La, Pr and Nd) using resistivity, thermopower, thermal conductivity, specific heat, high-resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and thermal expansion experiments. We show that all three compounds crystallize with a monoclinic symmetry, and undergo a metal-to-metal (MMT) transition at 135 K (La), 156 K (Pr) and 160 K (Nd). At MMT, the lattice parameters show distinct anomalies; however, without any lowering of the lattice symmetry. Unambiguous signatures of MMT are also seen in magnetic and thermal measurements, which suggest a strong coupling between the electronic, magnetic and structural degrees of freedom in these nickelates. Analysis of thermal expansion yields hydrostatic pressure dependence of MMT in close agreement with experiments. We show that the 9-fold coordinated Pr ions in the rocksalt (RS) layers have a crystal field (CF) split doublet ground state with possible antiferromagnetic ordering at 5 K. The Pr ions located in the perovskite block (PB) layers with 12-fold coordination, however, exhibit a non-magnetic singlet ground state. The CF ground state of Nd in both RS and PB layers is a Kramers doublet. Heat capacity of R = Nd shows a Schottky-like anomaly near35 K, and an upturn below T = 10 K suggesting the presence of short-range correlations between the Nd moments. However, no signs of long-range ordering could be found down to 2 K despite a sizeable theta_p ~ -40 K. The strongly suppressed magnetic long-range ordering in both R = Pr and Nd suggests the presence of strong magnetic frustration in these compounds. The low-temperature resistivity shows a T^0.5 dependence. No evidence for the heavy fermion behavior could be found in any of the three compounds.
