Non-isotropic cusp conditions and regularity of the electron density of molecules at the nuclei
Abstract: We investigate regularity properties of molecular one-electron densities rho near the nuclei. In particular we derive a representation rho(x)=mu(x)*(e^F(x)) with an explicit function F, only depending on the nuclear charges and the positions of the nuclei, such that mu belongs to C^{1,1}(R^3), i.e., mu has locally essentially bounded second derivatives. An example constructed using Hydrogenic ei… ▽ More

Numerical Solution of the Ekpyrotic Scenario in the Moduli Space Approximation
Abstract: A numerical solution to the equations of motion for the ekpyrotic bulk brane scenario in the moduli space approximation is presented. The visible universe brane has positive tension, and we use a potential that goes to zero exponentially at large distance, and also goes to zero at small distance. In the case considered, no bulk brane, visible brane collision occurs in the solution. This property… ▽ More

The large-Z behaviour of pseudo-relativistic atoms
Abstract: In this paper we study the large-Z behaviour of the ground state energy of atoms with electrons having relativistic kinetic energy sqrt(p^2c^2+m^2c^4)-mc^2. We prove that to leading order in Z the energy is the same as in the non-relativistic case, given by (non-relativistic) Thomas-Fermi theory. For the problem to make sense, we keep the product Z*alpha fixed (here alpha is Sommerfeld's fine st… ▽ More

Ultra-large bandwidth hollow-core guiding in all-silica Bragg fibers with nano-supports
Abstract: We demonstrate a new class of hollow-core Bragg fibers that are composed of concentric cylindrical silica rings separated by nanoscale support bridges. We theoretically predict and experimentally observe hollow-core confinement over an octave frequency range. The bandwidth of bandgap guiding in this new class of Bragg fibers exceeds that of other hollow-core fibers reported in the literature. Wi… ▽ More

Sharp regularity results for many-electron wave functions
Abstract: We show that electronic wave functions Psi of atoms and molecules have a representation Psi=F*phi, where F is an explicit universal factor, locally Lipschitz, and independent of the eigenvalue and the solution Psi itself, and phi has locally bounded second derivatives. This representation turns out to be optimal as can already be demonstrated with the help of hydrogenic wave functions. The proof… ▽ More

On the regularity of the density of electronic wavefunctions
Abstract: We prove that the electronic density of atomic and molecular eigenfunctions is smooth away from the nuclei. The result is proved without decay assumptions on the eigenfunctions.

Electron Wavefunctions and Densities for Atoms
Abstract: With a special `Ansatz' we analyse the regularity properties of atomic electron wavefunctions and electron densities. In particular we prove an a priori estimate, $\sup_{y\in B(x,R)}|\nablaψ(y)| \leq C(R) \sup_{y\in B(x,2R)}|ψ(y)|$ and obtain for the spherically averaged electron density, $\widetildeρ(r)$, that $\widetildeρ''(0)$ exists and is non-negative.
