The frustrated ladder with alternate ferromagnetic(F) exchange $-J_F$ and AF exchange $J_A$ to first neighbors and F exchange $-J_L$ to second neighbors is studied by exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations in systems of $2N$ spins-1/2 with periodic boundary conditions. The ground state is a singlet $(S = 0)$ and the singlet-triplet gap $\varepsilon_T$ is finite for the exchanges considered. Spin-1/2 string correlation functions $g_1(N)$ and $g_2(N)$ are defined for an even number $N$ of consecutive spins in systems with two spins per unit cell; the ladder has string order $g_2(\infty)> 0$ and $g_1(\infty) = 0$. The minimum $N^*$ of $g_2(N)$ is related to the range of ground-state spin correlations. Convergence to $g_2(\infty)$ is from below, and $g_1(N)$ decreases exponentially for $N \geq N^*$. Singlet valence bond (VB) diagrams account for the size dependencies. The frustrated ladder at special values of $J_F$, $J_L$ and $J_A$ reduces to well-known models such as the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet and the $J_1-J_2$ model, among others. Numerical analysis of ladders matches previous results for spin-1 gaps or string correlation functions and extends them to spin-1/2 systems. The nondegenerate singlet ground state of ladder is a bond-order wave, a Kekulé VB diagrams at $J_L = J_F/2 \leq J_A$, that is reversed on interchanging $-J_F$ and $J_A$. Inversion symmetry is spontaneously broken in the dimer phase of the $J_1-J_2$ model where the Kekulé diagrams are the doubly degenerate ground states at $J_2/J_1 = 1/2$.

In this brief review, we introduce a new spin ladder system called skewed spin ladders and discuss the exotic quantum phases of this system. The spin ladders studied are the 5/7, 3/4 and 3/5 systems corresponding to alternately fused 5 and 7 membered rings; 3 and 4 membered rings; and 3 and 5 membered rings. These ladders show completely different behaviour as the Hamiltonian model parameter is changed. When the Hamiltonian parameter is increased the 5/7 ladder switches from an initial singlet ground state to progressively higher spin ground state and then to a reentrant singlet state before finally settling to the highest spin ground state whose spin equals the number of unit cells in the system. The 3/4 ladder goes from a singlet ground state to a high spin ground state with each unit cell contributing spin 1 to the state, as the model parameter is increased. The 3/5 ladder shows a singlet ground state for small parameters and high spin ground state for intermediate values of the parameter and for still higher parameters, a reentrant singlet ground state. They can also show interesting magnetization plateaus as illustrated by studies on a specific spin ladder.

Instead of chain dimerization with two spins per unit cell, $J_1-J_2$ models with $α> 0.65$ and linear spin-phonon coupling are unconditionally unstable to sublattice dimerization with four spins per unit cell. Unequal $J_1$ to neighbors to the right and left extends the model to gapped ($γ> 0$) chains with conditional SP transitions at $T_{SP}$ to dimerized sublattices and a weaker specific heat $C(T)$ anomaly. The spin susceptibility $χ(T)$ and $C(T)$ are obtained in the thermodynamic limit by a combination of exact diagonalization of small systems with $α> 0.65$ and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations of systems up to $N \sim 100$ spins. Both $J_1-J_2$ and $γ> 0$ models account quantitatively for $χ(T)$ and $C(T)$ in the paramagnetic phase of $β$-TeVO$_{4}$ for $T > 8$ K, but lower $T$ indicates a gapped chain instead of a $J_1-J_2$ model as previously thought. The same parameters and $T_{SP} = 4.6$ K generate a $C(T)/T$ anomaly that reproduces the anomaly at the $4.6$ K transition of $β$-TeVO$_{4}$, but not the weak $χ(T)$ signature.

The antiferromagnetic $J_1-J_2$ model is a spin-1/2 chain with isotropic exchange $J_1 > 0$ between first neighbors and $J_2 = αJ_1$ between second neighbors. The model supports both gapless quantum phases with nondegenerate ground states and gapped phases with $Δ(α) > 0$ and doubly degenerate ground states. Exact thermodynamics is limited to $α= 0$, the linear Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAF). Exact diagonalization of small systems at frustration $α$ followed by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations returns the entropy density $S(T,α,N)$ and magnetic susceptibility $χ(T,α,N)$ of progressively larger systems up to $N = 96$ or 152 spins. Convergence to the thermodynamics limit, $S(T,α)$ or $χ(T,α)$, is demonstrated down to $T/J \sim 0.01$ in the sectors $α< 1$ and $α> 1$. $S(T,α)$ yields the critical points between gapless phases with $S^\prime(0,α) > 0$ and gapped phases with $S^\prime(0,α) = 0$. The $S^\prime(T,α)$ maximum at $T^*(α)$ is obtained directly in chains with large $Δ(α)$ and by extrapolation for small gaps. A phenomenological approximation for $S(T,α)$ down to $T = 0$ indicates power-law deviations $T^{-γ(α)}$ from $\exp(-Δ(α)/T)$ with exponent $γ(α)$ that increases with $α$. The $χ(T,α)$ analysis also yields power-law deviations, but with exponent $η(α)$ that decreases with $α$. $S(T,α)$ and the spin density $ρ(T,α) = 4Tχ(T,α)$ probe the thermal and magnetic fluctuations, respectively, of strongly correlated spin states. Gapless chains have constant $S(T,α)/ρ(T,α)$ for $T < 0.10$. Remarkably, the ratio decreases (increases) with $T$ in chains with large (small) $Δ(α)$.

The low temperature thermodynamics of correlated 1D fermionic models with spin and charge degrees of freedom is obtained by exact diagonalization (ED) of small systems and followed by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations that target the lowest hundreds of states $\{E(N)\}$ at system size $N$ instead of the ground state. Progressively larger $N$ reaches $T < 0.05t$ in correlated models with electron transfer $t$ between first neighbors and bandwidth $4t$. The size dependence of the many-fermion basis is explicitly included for arbitrary interactions by scaling the partition function. The remaining size dependence is then entirely due to the energy spectrum $\{E(N)\}$ of the model. The ED/DMRG method is applied to Hubbard and extended Hubbard models, both gapped and gapless, with $N_e = N$ or $N/2$ electrons and is validated against exact results for the magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ and entropy $S(T)$ per site. Some limitations of the method are noted. Special attention is given to the bond-order-wave phase of the extended Hubbard model with competing interactions and low $T$ thermodynamics sensitive to small gaps.

The ground state instability of regular ($δ= 0$) chains to dimerization ($δ> 0$) drives a spin-Peierls transition at $T_{SP}(α)$ that varies with $α$ in these strongly correlated systems. The thermodynamic limit of correlated states is obtained by exact treatment of short chains followed by density matrix renormalization calculations of progressively longer chains. The doubly degenerate ground states of the gapped regular phase are bond order waves (BOWs) with long-range bond-bond correlations and electronic dimerization $δ_e(α)$. The $T$ dependence of $δ_e(T,α)$ is found using four-spin correlation functions and contrasted to structural dimerization $δ(T,α)$ at $T \le T_{SP}(α)$. The relation between $T_{SP}(α)$ and the $T = 0$ gap $Δ(δ(0),α)$ varies with frustration in both gapless and gapped phases. The magnetic susceptibility $χ(T,α)$ at $T > T_{SP}$ can be used to identify physical realizations of spin-Peierls systems. The $α= 1/2$ chain illustrates the characteristic BOW features of a regular chain with a large singlet-triplet gap and electronic dimerization.

We investigated the mixed-stack charge-transfer crystal, N,N'-dimethylphenazine-TCNQ (M$_2$P-TCNQ), which is polar at room temperature and just at the neutral-to-ionic interface (ionicity $ρ\approx 0.5$). We detect the typical dielectric signature of a relaxor ferroelectric and an asymmetric positive-up-negative-down behavior. While relaxor ferroelectricity is usually ascribed to disorder in the crystal, we find no evidence for structural disorder in the investigated crystals. To elucidate the origin of M$_2$P-TCNQ's dielectric properties we perform parallel structural and spectroscopic measurements, associated with theoretical modeling and quantum-mechanical calculations. Our combined effort points to a highly polarizable electronic system that is strongly coupled to lattice vibrations. The found indications for polarization reversal imply flip** of the bent conformation of the M$_2$P molecule with an associated energy barrier of a few tens of an eV, broadly consistent with an Arrhenius fit of the dielectric relaxation times. While the polarization is mostly of electronic origin, its possible reversal implies slow collective motions that are affected by solid-state intermolecular interactions.

We use correlated states throughout in the $J_1-J_2$ model with antiferromagnetic exchange $J_1$ and $J_2 = αJ_1$ between first and second neighbors, respectively, and variable frustration $0 \leq α\leq 0.50$. The thermodynamic limit is reached at high $T$ by exact diagonalization of short chains and at low $T$ by density matrix renormalization group calculations of progressively longer chains. In contrast to mean field results, correlated states of 1D models with linear spin-phonon coupling and a harmonic adiabatic lattice provide an internally consistent description in which the parameter $T_{SP}$ yields both the stiffness and the lattice dimerization $δ(T)$. The relation between $T_{SP}$ and $Δ(δ,α)$, the $T = 0$ gap induced by dimerization, depends strongly on $α$ and deviates from the BCS gap relation that holds in uncorrelated spin chains. Correlated states account quantitatively for the magnetic susceptibility of TTF-CuS$_4$C$_4$(CF$_3$)$_4$ crystals ($J_1 = 79$ K, $α= 0$, $T_{SP} = 12$ K) and CuGeO$_3$ crystals ($J_1 = 160$ K, $α= 0.35$,
$T_{SP} = 14$ K). The same parameters describe the specific heat anomaly of CuGeO$_3$ and inelastic neutron scattering. Modeling the spin-Peierls transition with correlated states exploits the fact that $δ(0)$ limits the range of spin correlations at $T = 0$ while $T > 0$ limits the range at $δ= 0$.

Density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations of progressively larger systems are used to obtain excitations up to a cutoff $W_C$ and the low-$T$ thermodynamics. The hybrid approach is applied to the magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ and specific heat $C(T)$ of spin-$1/2$ chains with isotropic exchange such as the linear Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAF) and the frustrated $J_1-J_2$ model with ferromagnetic (F) $J_1 < 0$ and antiferromagnetic (AF) $J_2 > 0$. The hybrid approach is fully validated by comparison with HAF results. It extends $J_1-J_2$ thermodynamics down to $T \sim 0.01|J_1|$ for $J_2/|J_1| \geq α_c = 1/4$ and is consistent with other methods. The criterion for the cutoff $W_C(N)$ in systems of $N$ spins is discussed. The cutoff leads to bounds for the thermodynamic limit that are best satisfied at a specific $T(N)$ at system size $N$.

Open and periodic boundary conditions return the same ground state energy in the thermodynamic limit, but not the same spin $S_G$ when $S \ge 1$. The ground state of open chains of N spins has $S_G = 0$ or $S$, respectively, for even or odd N. Density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations with different algorithms for even and odd N are presented up to N = 500 for the energy and spin densities $ρ(r,N)$ of edge states in HAFs with $S = 1$, 3/2 and 2. The edge states are boundary-induced spin density waves (BI-SDWs) with $ρ(r,N)\propto(-1)^{r-1}$ for $r=1,2,\ldots N$. The SDWs are in phase when N is odd, out of phase when N is even, and have finite excitation energy $Γ(N)$ that decreases exponentially with N for integer $S$ and faster than 1/N for half integer $S$. The spin densities and excitation energy are quantitatively modeled for integer $S$ chains longer than $5 ξ$ spins by two parameters, the correlation length $ξ$ and the SDW amplitude, with $ξ= 6.048$ for $S = 1$ and 49.0 for $S = 2$. The BI-SDWs of $S = 3/2$ chains are not localized and are qualitatively different for even and odd N. Exchange between the ends for odd N is mediated by a delocalized effective spin in the middle that increases $|Γ(N)|$ and weakens the size dependence. The nonlinear sigma model (NL$σ$M) has been applied the HAFs, primarily to $S = 1$ with even N, to discuss spin densities and exchange between localized states at the ends as $Γ(N) \propto (-1)^N \exp(-N/ξ)$...

The spin-1/2 chain with isotropic exchange J1, J2 > 0 between first and second neighbors is frustrated for either sign of J1 and has a singlet ground state (GS) for J1/J2 $\ge - 4$. Its rich quantum phase diagram supports gapless, gapped, commensurate (C), incommensurate (IC) and other phases. Critical points J1/J2 are evaluated using exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. The wave vector $q_G$ of spin correlations is related to GS degeneracy and obtained as the peak of the spin structure factor $S(q)$. Variable $q_G$ indicates IC phases in two $J1/J2$ intervals, [ -4, -1.24] and [0.44, 2], and a C-IC point at J1/J2 = 2. The decoupled C phase in [-1.24, 0.44] has constant $q_G = π/2$, nondegenerate GS, and a lowest triplet state with broken spin density on sublattices of odd and even numbered sites. The lowest triplet and singlet excitations, $E_m$ and $E_σ$, are degenerate in finite systems at specific frustration $J1/J2$. Level crossing extrapolates in the thermodynamic limit to the same critical points as $q_G$. The $S(q)$ peak diverges at $q_G = π$ in the gapless phase with $J1/J2 > 4.148$ and quasi-long-range order (QLRO({$π$})). $S(q)$ diverges at $\pm π/2$ in the decoupled phase with QLRO({$π$}/2), but is finite in gapped phases with finite range correlations. Numerical results and field theory agree at small $J2/J1$ but disagree for the decoupled phase with weak exchange $J1$ between sublattices. Two related models are summarized: one has an exact gapless decoupled phase with QLRO({$π$}/2) and no IC phases; the other has a single IC phase without a decoupled phase in between.

An efficient density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm is presented and applied to Y-junctions, systems with three arms of $n$ sites that meet at a central site. The accuracy is comparable to DMRG of chains. As in chains, new sites are always bonded to the most recently added sites and the superblock Hamiltonian contains only new or once renormalized operators. Junctions of up to $N = 3n + 1 \approx 500$ sites are studied with antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg exchange $J$ between nearest-neighbor spins $S$ or electron transfer $t$ between nearest neighbors in half-filled Hubbard models. Exchange or electron transfer is exclusively between sites in two sublattices with $N_A \ne N_B$. The ground state (GS) and spin densities $ ρ_r = <S^z_r >$ at site $r$ are quite different for junctions with $S$ = 1/2, 1, 3/2 and 2. The GS has finite total spin $S_G = 2S (S)$ for even (odd) $N$ and for $M_G =S_G$ in the $S_G$ spin manifold, $ρ_r > 0 (< 0)$ at sites of the larger (smaller) sublattice. $S$ = 1/2 junctions have delocalized states and decreasing spin densities with increasing $N$. $S$ = 1 junctions have four localized $S_z = 1/2$ states at the end of each arm and centered on the junction, consistent with localized states in $S$ = 1 chains with finite Haldane gap. The GS of $S$ = 3/2 or 2 junctions of up to 500 spins is a spin density wave (SDW) with increased amplitude at the ends of arms or near the junction. Quantum fluctuations completely suppress AF order in $S$ = 1/2 or 1 junctions, as well as in half-filled Hubbard junctions, but reduce rather than suppress AF order in $S$ = 3/2 or 2 junctions.

Its quantum phase diagram has critical points at fixed $J_1/J_2$ between gapless phases with nondegenerate ground state (GS) and quasi-long-range order (QLRO) and gapped phases with doubly degenerate GS and spin correlation functions of finite range. In finite chains, exact diagonalization (ED) estimates critical points as level crossing of excited states. GS spin correlations enter in the spin structure factor $S(q)$ that diverges at wave vector $q_m$ in QLRO($q_m$) phases with periodicity $2π/q_m$ but remains finite in gapped phases. $S(q_m)$ is evaluated using ED and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. Level crossing and the magnitude of $S(q_m)$ are independent and complementary probes of quantum phases, based respectively on excited and ground states. Both indicate a gapless QLRO($π/2$) phase between $-1.2 < J_1/|J_2| < 0.45$. Numerical results and field theory agree well for quantum critical points at small frustration $J_2$ but disagree in the sector of weak exchange $J_1$ between Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains on sublattices of odd and even-numbered sites.

Engineering the position of the lowest triplet state (T1) relative to the first excited singlet state (S1) is of great importance in improving the efficiencies of organic light emitting diodes and organic photovoltaic cells. We have carried out model exact calculations of substituted polyene chains to understand the factors that affect the energy gap between S1 and T1. The factors studied are backbone dimerisation, different donor-acceptor substitutions and twisted geometry. The largest system studied is an eighteen carbon polyene which spans a Hilbert space of about 991 million. We show that for reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process, the best system involves substituting all carbon sites on one half of the polyene with donors and the other half with acceptors.

The quantum phases of one-dimensional spin $s= 1/2$ chains are discussed for models with two parameters, frustrating exchange $g = J_2 > 0$ between second neighbors and normalized nonfrustrating power-law exchange with exponent $α$ and distance dependence $r^{-α}$. The ground state (GS) at $g = 0$ has long-range order (LRO) for $α< 2$, long-range spin fluctuations for $α> 2$. The models conserve total spin $S = S_A + S_B$, have singlet GS for any $g$, $α\ge 0$ and decouple at $1/g = 0$ to linear Heisenberg antiferromagnets on sublattices $A$ and $B$ of odd and even-numbered sites. Exact diagonalization of finite chains gives the sublattice spin $ \ < S^2_A \ >$, the magnetic gap $E_m$ to the lowest triplet state and the excitation $E_σ$ to the lowest singlet with opposite inversion symmetry to the GS. An analytical model that conserves sublattice spin has a first order quantum transition at $g_c = 1/4{\rm ln2}$ from a GS with perfect LRO to a decoupled phase with $S_A = S_B = 0$ for $g \ge 4/π^2$ and no correlation between spins in different sublattices. The model with $α= 1$ has a first order transition to a decoupled phase that closely resembles the analytical model. The bond order wave (BOW) phase and continuous quantum phase transitions of finite models with $α\ge 2$ are discussed in terms of GS degeneracy where $E_σ(g) = 0$, excited state degeneracy where $E_σ(g) = E_m(g)$, and $\ < S^2_A \ >$. The decoupled phase at large frustration has nondegenerate GS for any exponent $α$ and excited states related to sublattice excitations.

The title compounds have dominant ferromagnetic (FM) exchange interactions within one-dimensional (1D) half-twist ladders of s =1/2 Cu2^{+} ions and antiferromagnetic(AFM) interactions between ladders, leading to ordered 3D phases at temperatures below 20K. Here we show that a microscopic 1D model of the paramagnetic (PM) phase combined with a phenomenological model based on sublattice magnetization describes the observed temperature and field dependent magnetism. The model identifies AFM, spin-flop (SF) and PM phases whose boundaries have sharp features in the experimental magnetization M(T,H) and specific heat CP(T,H). Exact diagonalization (ED) of the 1D model, possible for 24 spins due to special structural features of half-twist ladders, yields the magnetization and spin susceptibility of the PM phase. AFM interactions between ladders are included at the mean-field level using the field, HAF, obtained from modeling the ordered phases. Isotropic exchange J1 = -135K and g-tensor g = 2.1 within ladders, plus exchange and anisotropy fields HAF and HA, describe the ordered phases, and are almost quantitative for the PM phase.

Exact diagonalization of finite spin-1/2 chains with periodic boundary conditions is applied to the ground state (gs) of chains with ferromagnetic (F) exchange $J_1 < 0$between first neighbors, antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange $J_2 = αJ_1 > 0$between second neighbors, and axial anisotropy $0 \le Δ\le 1$. In zero field, the gs is in the $S_z = 0$ sector for the relevant parameters and is doubly degenerate at multiple points $γ_m = (α_m, Δ_m)$ in the $α$, $Δ$ plane. Degeneracy under inversion at sites or spin parity or both leads, respectively, to a bond order wave (BOW), to staggered magnetization or to vector chiral (VC) order. Exact results up to $N = 28$ spins directly yield order parameters and spin correlation functions whose weak N dependencies allow inferences about infinite chains. The high-spin gs at $J_2 = 0$ changes discontinuously at $γ_1 = (-1/4, 1)$ to a singlet in the isotropic ($Δ= 1$) chain. The transition from high to low spin $S(α, Δ)$ is continuous for $ Δ< Δ_B = 0.95 \pm 0.01$ on the degeneracy line $α_1(Δ)$. The gs has staggered magnetization between $Δ_A = 0.72$ and $Δ_B$, and a BOW for $Δ< Δ_A$. When both inversion and spin parity are reversed at $γ_m$, the correlation functions $C(p)$ for spins separated by $p$ sites are identical. $C(p)$ minima are shifted by $π/2$ from the minima of VC order parameters at separation $p$, consistent with right and left-handed helices along the z axis and spins in the xy plane. Degenerate gs of finite chains are related to quantum phase diagrams of extended $α$, $Δ$ chains, with good agreement for order parameters along the line $α_1(Δ)$.

Both 334 phases have a structure derived from perovskite, with CuO4 squares interconnected to form half-twist ladders along the c-axis. The Cu-O-Cu angles, ~ 90o, and the positive Weiss temperatures indicate the presence of significant ferromagnetic (FM) interactions along the Cu ladders. At low temperatures, T < 20 K, sharp transitions in the magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements indicate three-dimensional (3D) antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at TN. TN is suppressed on application of a field and a complex magnetic phase diagram with three distinct magnetic regimes below the upper critical field can be inferred from our measurements. The magnetic interactions are discussed in relation to a modified spin-1/2 FM-AFM model and the 334 half-twist ladder is compared to other 2-rung ladder spin-1/2 systems.

The algorithm is accurate for $s = 1$ sites. The ground states are magnetic with spin $S(g) = 2^g s$, staggered magnetization that persists for large $g > 20$ and short-range spin correlation functions that decrease exponentially. A finite energy gap to $S > S(g)$ leads to a magnetization plateau in the extended lattice. The bond order wave (BOW) phase of the extended Hubbard model (EHM) in one dimension (1D) is characterized at intermediate correlation $U = 4t$ by exact treatment of $N$-site systems. Linear coupling to lattice (Peierls) phonons and molecular (Holstein) vibrations are treated in the adiabatic approximation. The molar magnetic susceptibility $χ_M(T)$ is obtained directly up to $N = 10$. The goal is to find the consequences of a doubly degenerate ground state (gs) and finite magnetic gap $E_m$ in a regular array. Degenerate gs with broken inversion symmetry are constructed for finite $N$ for a range of $V$ near the charge density wave (CDW) boundary at $V \approx 2.18t$ where $E_m \approx 0.5t$ is large. The electronic amplitude $B(V)$ of the BOW in the regular array is shown to mimic a tight-binding band with small effective dimerization $δ_{eff}$. Electronic spin and charge solitons are elementary excitations of the BOW phase and also resemble topological solitons with small $δ_{eff}$. Strong infrared intensity of coupled molecular vibrations in dimerized 1D systems is shown to extend to the regular BOW phase, while its temperature dependence is related to spin solitons. The Peierls instability to dimerization has novel aspects for degenerate gs and substantial $E_m$ that suppresses thermal excitations. Finite $E_m$ implies exponentially small $χ_M(T)$ at low temperature followed by an almost linear increase with $T$. The EHM with $U = 4t$ is representative of intermediate correlations in quasi-1D systems such as conjugated polymers or organic ion-radical and charge-transfer salts. The vibronic and thermal properties of correlated models with BOW phases are needed to identify possible physical realizations.

The molar spin susceptibilities $χ(T)$ of Na-TCNQ, K-TCNQ and Rb-TCNQ(II) are fit quantitatively to 450 K in terms of half-filled bands of three one-dimensional Hubbard models with extended interactions using exact results for finite systems. All three models have bond order wave (BOW) and charge density wave (CDW) phases with boundary $V = V_c(U)$ for nearest-neighbor interaction $V$ and on-site repulsion $U$. At high $T$, all three salts have regular stacks of $\rm TCNQ^-$ anion radicals. The $χ(T)$ fits place Na and K in the CDW phase and Rb(II) in the BOW phase with $V \approx V_c$. The Na and K salts have dimerized stacks at $T < T_d$ while Rb(II) has regular stacks at 100K. The $χ(T)$ analysis extends to dimerized stacks and to dimerization fluctuations in Rb(II). The three models yield consistent values of $U$, $V$ and transfer integrals $t$ for closely related $\rm TCNQ^-$ stacks. Model parameters based on $χ(T)$ are smaller than those from optical data that in turn are considerably reduced by electronic polarization from quantum chemical calculation of $U$, $V$ and $t$ on adjacent $\rm TCNQ^-$ ions. The $χ(T)$ analysis shows that fully relaxed states have reduced model parameters compared to optical or vibration spectra of dimerized or regular $\rm TCNQ^-$ stacks.

The bond order wave (BOW) phase of half-filled linear Hubbard-type models is narrow and difficult to characterize aside from a few ground state properties. The BOW phase of a frustrated Heisenberg spin chain is wide and tractable. It has broken inversion symmetry C_i in a regular array and finite gap E_m to the lowest triplet state. The spin-BOW is exact in finite systems at a special point. Its elementary excitations are spin-1/2 solitons that connect BOWs with opposite phase. The same patterns of spin densities and bond orders appear in the BOW phase of Hubbard-type models. Infrared (IR) active lattice phonons or molecular vibrations are derivatives of P, the polarization along the stack. Molecular vibrations that are forbidden in regular arrays become IR active when C_i symmetry is broken. 1:1 alkali-TCNQ salts contain half-filled regular TCNQ- stacks at high temperature, down to 100 K in the Rb-TCNQ(II) polymorph whose magnetic susceptibility and polarized IR spectra indicate a BOW phase. More complete modeling will require explicit electronic coupling to phonons and molecular vibrations.

The elementary excitations of the BOW phase with large $E_m$ are topological spin-1/2 solitons that separate BOWs with opposite phase in a regular array of spins. A modified density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm is applied to the zigzag spin-1/2 chain with frustrated antiferromagnetic exchange $J_1$, $J_2$ between first and second neighbors. The modified algorithm yields accurate results up to $J_2/J_1 \approx 4$ for the magnetic gap $Δ$ to the lowest triplet state, the amplitude $B$ of the bond order wave (BOW) phase, the wavelength $λ$ of the spiral phase, and the spin correlation length $ξ$. The $J_2/J_1$ dependences of $Δ$, $B$, $λ$ and $ξ$ provide multiple comparisons to field theories of the zigzag chain. The twist angle of the spiral phase and the spin structure factor yield additional comparisons between DMRG and field theory. Attention is given to the numerical accuracy required to obtain exponentially small gaps or exponentially long correlations near a quantum phase transition.

Theoretical and computational studies of the quantum phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model (EHM) indicate a narrow bond order wave (BOW) phase with finite magnetic gap $E_m$ for on-site repulsion $U < U^*$, the critical point, and nearest neighbor interaction $V_c \approx U/2$ near the boundary of the charge density wave (CDW) phase. Potentials with more extended interactions that retain the EHM symmetry are shown to have a less cooperative CDW transition with higher $U^*$ and wider BOW phase. Density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) is used to obtain $E_m$ directly as the singlet-triplet gap, with finite $E_m$ marking the BOW boundary $V_s(U)$. The BOW/CDW boundary $V_c(U)$ is obtained from exact finite-size calculations that are consistent with previous EHM determinations. The kinetic energy or bond order provides a convenient new estimate of $U^*$ based on a metallic point at $V_c(U)$ for $U < U^*$. Tuning the BOW phase of half-filled Hubbard models with different intersite potentials indicates a ground state with large charge fluctuations and magnetic frustration. The possibility of physical realizations of a BOW phase is raised for Coulomb interactions.

Abstract:
Diffuse X-ray data for mixed stack organic charge-transfer crystals approaching the neutral-ionic phase transition can be quantitatively explained as due to the softening of the optical phonon branch. The interpretation is fully consistent with vibrational spectra, and underlines the importance of electron-phonon coupling in low-dimensional systems with delocalized electrons.

In conformal field theory, key properties of spin-1/2 chains, such as the ground state energy per site and the excitation gap scale with dimerization delta as delta^alpha with known exponents alpha and logarithmic corrections. The logarithmic corrections vanish in a spin chain with nearest (J=1) and next nearest neighbor interactions (J_2), for J_2c=0.2411. DMRG analysis of a frustrated spin chain with no logarithmic corrections yields the field theoretic values of alpha, and the scaling relation is valid up to the physically realized range, delta ~ 0.1. However, chains with logarithmic corrections (J_2<0.2411 J) are more accurately fit by simple power laws with different exponents for physically realized dimerizations. We show the exponents decreasing from approximately 3/4 to 2/3 for the spin gap and from approximately 3/2 to 4/3 for the energy per site and error bars in the exponent also decrease as J_2 approaches to J_2c.

The dipole P(F) of systems with periodic boundary conditions (PBC) in a static electric field F is applied to one-dimensional Peierls-Hubbard models for organic charge-transfer (CT) salts. Exact results for P(F) are obtained for finite systems of N = 14 and 16 sites that are almost converged to infinite chains in deformable lattices subject to a Peierls transition. The electronic polarizability per site, α_{el} = (\partial P/\partial F)_0, of rigid stacks with alternating transfer integrals t(1 +/- δ) diverges at the neutral-ionic transition for δ= 0 but remains finite for δ> 0 in dimerized chains. The Peierls or dimerization mode couples to charge fluctuations along the stack and results in large vibrational contributions, α_{vib}, that are related to \partial P/\partial δand that peak sharply at the Peierls transition. The extension of P(F) to correlated electronic states yields the dielectric response κof models with neutral-ionic or Peierls transitions, where κpeaks >100 are found with parameters used previously for variable ionicity ρand vibrational spectra of CT salts. The calculated κaccounts for the dielectric response of CT salts based on substituted TTFs (tetrathiafulvalene) and substituted CAs (chloranil). The role of lattice stiffness appears clearly in models: soft systems have a Peierls instability at small ρand continuous crossover to large ρ, while stiff stacks such as TTF-CA have a first-order transition with discontinuous ρthat is both a neutral-ionic and Peierls transition. The transitions are associated with tuning the electronic ground state of insulators via temperature or pressure in experiments, or via model parameters in calculations.

The first-order transition of the charge-transfer complex TTF-CA (tetrathiafulvalene-chloranil) is both a neutral-ionic and a Peierls transition. In related organic charge transfer complexes, cooling at ambient pressure increases the ionicity $ρ$ in strikingly different ways, and is sometimes accompanied by a dielectric peak, that we relate to lattice stiffness, to structural and energetic disorder, and to the softening of the Peierls mode in the far-IR. The position operator $P$ for systems with periodic boundary conditions makes possible a systematic treatment of electron-phonon interactions in extended donor-acceptor stacks in terms of correlated Peierls-Hubbard models. The IR intensity of the Peierls mode peaks at the Peierls transition at small $ρ< 1/2$ in soft lattices, where the dielectric constant also has a large peak. In dimerized stacks, the IR intensity of totally symmetric, Raman active, molecular vibrations is related to charge fluctuations that modulate site energies. Combination bands of molecular and Peierls modes are identified in regular TTF-CA stacks above Tc. Energetic disorder can suppress the Peierls transition and rationalize a continuous crossover from small to large $ρ$. The TTF-CA scenario of a neutral-regular to ionic-dimerized transition must be broadened considerably in view of charge transfer salts that dimerize on the neutral side, that become ionic without a structural change, or that show vibrational evidence for dimerization at constant $ρ< 1$.

We recognize important collective phenomena due to supramolecular interactions in materials with large molecular polarizabilities, and underline large vibrational contributions to the polarizability in materials with largely delocalized electrons.

Electronic polarization is evaluated in pentacene crystals and in thin films on a metallic substrate using a self-consistent method for computing charge redistribution in non-overlap** molecules. The optical dielectric constant and its principal axes are reported for a neutral crystal. The polarization energies P+ and P- of a cation and anion at infinite separation are found for both molecules in the crystal's unit cell in the bulk, at the surface, and at the organic-metal interface of a film of N molecular layers. We find that a single pentacene layer with herring-bone packing provides a screening environment approaching the bulk. The polarization contribution to the transport gap P=(P+)+(P-), which is 2.01 eV in the bulk, decreases and increases by only ~ 10% at surfaces and interfaces, respectively. We also compute the polarization energy of charge-transfer (CT) states with fixed separation between anion and cation, and compare to electroabsorption data and to submolecular calculations. Electronic polarization of ~ 1 eV per charge has a major role for transport in organic molecular systems with limited overlap.

We present an approach to electronic polarization in molecular solids treated as a set of quantum systems interacting classically. Individual molecules are dealt with rigorously as quantum-mechanical systems subject to classical external fields created by all other molecules and, possibly, external sources. Self-consistent equations are derived for induced dipoles and for atomic charges whose redistribution in external fields is given explicitly by an atom-atom polarizability tensor. Electronic polarization is studied in two representative organic molecular crystals, anthracene and perylenetetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (PTCDA), and contrasted to previous results for systems of polarizable points. The stabilization energies of the neutral lattice, of isolated anions and cations, and of cation-anion pairs are found. Charge redistribution on ions is included. The dielectric tensors of crystals are successfully related to gas-phase properties and provide consistency checks on polarization energies. The procedure is generally applicable to organic crystals in the limit of no intermolecular overlap.

Exact ground states, charge densities and excitation energies are found using valence bond methods for N-site modified Hubbard models with uniform spacing. At the neutral-ionic transition (NIT), the ground state has a symmetry crossover in 4n, 4n+2 rings with periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions, respectively. The modified Hubbard model has a continuous NIT between a diamagnetic band insulator on the paired side and a paramagnetic Mott insulator on the covalent side. The singlet-triplet (ST), singlet-singlet (SS) and charge gaps for finite N indicate that the ST and SS gaps close at the NIT with increasing U and that the charge gap vanishes only there. Finite-N excitations constrain all singularities to about 0.1t of the symmetry crossover. The NIT is interpreted as a localized ground state (gs) with finite gaps on the paired side and an extended gs with vanishing ST and SS gaps on the covalent side. The charge gap and charge stiffness indicate a metallic gs at the transition that, however, is unconditionally unstable to dimerization.
