Abstract:
A measurement of direct CP violation in the decay $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{0}$ is reported using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 $\textrm{fb}^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. The CP asymmetry is measured to be $0.025 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.003$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and du…

The CP asymmetry is measured to be $0.025 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.003$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to an external input, respectively. This is the most precise measurement of the CP asymmetry in the decay $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{0}$ and exceeds the precision on the current world average. This direct CP asymmetry is a key input to studies of a long-standing anomaly in $B$ meson decays, known as the $Kπ$-puzzle. The asymmetry is consistent with the previous measurements of this quantity, confirming and significantly enhancing the observed anomalous difference between the direct CP asymmetries of the $B^{0} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{-}$ and $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+} π^{0}$ decays.

First evidence of a structure in the $J/ψ\varLambda$ invariant mass distribution is obtained from an amplitude analysis of $\varXi_b^- \to J/ψ\varLambda K^-$ decays. Measurements of $C\!P$ observables in $B^\pm \rightarrow D^{(*)} K^\pm$ and $B^\pm \rightarrow D^{(*)} π^\pm$ decays are presented, where $D^{(*)}$ indicates a neutral $D$ or $D^*$ meson that is an admixture of meson and anti-meson states. Decays of the $D^*$ meson to the $Dπ^0$ and $Dγ$ final states are partially reconstructed without inclusion of the neutral pion or photon. Decays of the $D$ meson are reconstructed in the $K^\pm π^\mp$, $K^+K^-$, and $π^+π^-$ final states. The analysis uses a sample of charged $B$ mesons produced in proton-proton collisions and collected with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.0, 1.0, and 5.7 fb$^{-1}$ taken at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, respectively. The measurements of partially reconstructed $B^\pm \to D^* K^\pm$ and $B^\pm \to D^* π^\pm$ with $D \to K^\mp π^\pm$ decays are the first of their kind, and a first observation of the $B^\pm \to (D π^0)_{D^*} π^\pm$ decay is made with a significance of 6.1 standard deviations. All $C\!P$ observables are measured with world-best precision, and in combination with other LHCb results will provide strong constraints on the CKM angle $γ$.

The search is performed using $5.4$ fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. Three mechanisms of production of long-lived particles are considered: the direct pair production from quark interactions, the pair production from the decay of a Standard-Model-like Higgs boson with a mass of $125$ GeV/c$^2$, and the charged current production from an on-shell $W$ boson with an additional lepton. No evidence of these long-lived states is obtained and upper limits on the production cross-section times branching fraction are set on the different production modes.

A time-dependent amplitude analysis is performed to extract the $CP$-violating weak phase $γ-2β_s$ and, subsequently, $γ$ by taking the $B^0_s$-$\bar{B}^0_s$ mixing phase $β_{s}$ as an external input. The measurement yields $γ= (44 \pm 12)^\circ$ modulo $180^\circ$, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are combined. An alternative model-independent measurement, integrating over the five-dimensional phase space of the decay, yields $γ= (44^{\,+\,20}_{\,-\,13})^\circ$ modulo $180^\circ$. Moreover, the $B^0_s$-$\bar{B}^0_s$ oscillation frequency is measured from the flavour-specific control channel $B^0_s \rightarrow D_s^- π^+ π^+ π^-$ to be $Δm_s = (17.757 \pm 0.007 \,({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.008 \,({\rm syst.})) \text{ps}^{-1}$, consistent with and more precise than the current world-average value.

We critically reexamine the problem of interatomic exchange interactions, which describe the total energy change caused by infinitesimal rotations of spins near some equilibrium state. For the small variations, such interactions can be always related to the response function. However, the form of this relation can depend on additional approximations. Particularly, the commonly used magnetic force theorem (MFT) prescribes the linear relation between the exchange interactions and the response function, while the exact theory requires this dependence to be inverse. We explore the origin and consequences of these differences in the definition for the wide class of materials: ferromagnetic Ni, antiferromagnetic NiO, half-metallic CrO2, multiferroic HoMnO3, and layered magnets CrCl3 and CrI3. While in most of these cases, MFT produces quite reasonable results and can be rigorously justifies in the long wavelength and strong-coupling limits, the exact formulation appears to be more consistent, especially in dealing with two important issues, which typically arise in the theory of exchange interactions: (i) the treatment of the ligand states, and (ii) the choice of the suitable variable for the description of infinitesimal rotations of spins. Both issues can be efficiently resolved by employing the ideas of adiabatic spin dynamics supplemented with the exact expression for the exchange interactions. Particularly, we propose a simple "downfolding" procedure for the elimination of the ligand spins by transferring their effect to the interaction parameters between the localized spins. Furthermore, we argue that the rotations of spin moments are more suitable for the description of low-energy excitations, while the rotations of the whole magnetization matrix cause much stronger perturbation in the system of spins.

A new excited $D_s^+$ meson is observed decaying into the $D^+K^+π^-$ final state with large statistical significance. The pole mass and width, and the spin-parity of the new state are measured with an amplitude analysis to be $m_R=2591\pm6\pm7\,{\rm MeV}$, $Γ_R=89\pm16\pm12\,{\rm MeV}$ and $J^P=0^-$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Fit fractions for all components in the amplitude analysis are also reported. The new resonance, denoted as $D_{s0}(2590)^+$, is a strong candidate to be the $D_s(2^1{S}_0)^+$ state, the radial excitation of the pseudoscalar ground-state $D_s^+$ meson.

Both same-sign and opposite-sign muons in the final state are considered. Data are found to be consistent with the expected background. Upper limits on the coupling of a heavy neutrino with the Standard Model neutrino are set at $95\%$ confidence level in the heavy-neutrino mass range from 5 to $50 \text{ GeV}/c^2$. These are of the order of $10^{-3}$ for lepton-number-conserving decays and of the order of $10^{-4}$ for lepton-number-violating heavy-neutrino decays.

Both DFT and DFT+U+SOC calculations show that this material most probably dimerizes at normal conditions. Therefore it is unlikely that symmetric SU(4) model can be used for description of magnetic properties of alpha-ZrCl3 at low temperatures. In the dimerized structure electrons occupy molecular orbitals formed by the xy orbitals. One might expect a non-magnetic ground state in this case. Interestingly the energy difference between various dimers packings is rather small and thus dimers may start to flow over the lattice as they do in Li2RuO3.

The decays $B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψK^{\ast0} \bar{K}^{\ast0}$ and $B^0_s \rightarrow χ_{c1}(3872)K^+K^-$, where the $K^+K^-$ pair does not originate from a $φ$ meson, are observed for the first time. Precise measurements of the ratios of branching fractions between intermediate $χ_{c1}(3872)φ$, $J/ψK^{\ast0}\bar{K}^{\ast0}$, $ψ(2S)φ$ and $χ_{c1}(3872)K^+K^-$ states are reported. A structure, denoted as $X(4740)$, is observed in the $J/ψφ$ mass spectrum and, assuming a Breit-Wigner parameterisation, its mass and width are determined to be \begin{eqnarray*} m_{X(4740)} & = & 4741 \pm 6 \pm 6\,{\mathrm{MeV}}/c^2 \,, \\ Γ_{X(4740)} & = & 53 \pm 15 \pm 11\,{\mathrm{MeV}} \,, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, the most precise single measurement of the mass of the $B^0_s$ meson is performed and gives a value of
$$ m_{B^0_s} = 5366.98 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.13\,{\mathrm{MeV}}/c^2\,. $$

The measurements are performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.6\text{fb}^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment in 2016. No evidence is observed for the 25 decay modes that are investigated and $90\%$ confidence level limits on the branching fractions are set between $1.4\times10^{-8}$ and $6.4\times10^{-6}$. In most cases, these results represent an improvement on existing limits by one to two orders of magnitude.

A structure is observed in the $B^+K^-$ mass spectrum in a sample of proton--proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb${}^-1$. The structure is interpreted as the result of overlap** excited $B_s^0$ states. With high significance, a two-peak hypothesis provides a better description of the data than a single resonance. Under this hypothesis the masses and widths of the two states, assuming they decay directly to $B^+K^-$, are determined to be
$m_1 = 6063.5 \pm 1.2 \text{ (stat)} \pm 0.8\text{ (syst) MeV},$
$Γ_1 = 26 \pm 4 \text{ (stat)} \pm 4\text{ (syst) MeV},$
$m_2 = 6114 \pm 3 \text{ (stat)} \pm 5\text{ (syst) MeV},$
$Γ_2 = 66 \pm 18 \text{ (stat)} \pm 21\text{ (syst) MeV}.$
Alternative values assuming a decay through $B^{*+}K^-$, with a missing photon from the $B^{*+} \rightarrow B^+γ$ decay, which are shifted by approximately 45 MeV are also determined. The possibility of a single state decaying in both channels is also considered. The ratio of the total production cross-section times branching fraction of the new states relative to the previously observed $B_{s2}^{*0}$ state is determined to be $0.87 \pm 0.15 \text{ (stat)} \pm 0.19 \text{ (syst)}$.

$Γ(Ξ_b(6227)^0) = 18.6^{\,+5.0}_{\,-4.1}\pm1.4$ MeV,
where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. The production rate of the $Ξ_b(6227)^0$ state relative to that of the $Ξ_b^-$ baryon in the kinematic region $2<η<5$ and $p_{\rm T}<30$ GeV is measured to be
$\frac{f_{Ξ_b(6227)^0}}{f_{Ξ_b^-}}{\mathcal{B}}(Ξ_b(6227)^0\toΞ_b^-π^+) = 0.045\pm0.008\pm0.004$,
where ${\mathcal{B}}(Ξ_b(6227)^0\toΞ_b^-π^+)$ is the branching fraction of the decay, and $f_{Ξ_b(6227)^0}$ and $f_{Ξ_b^-}$ represent fragmentation fractions.
Improved measurements of the mass and natural width of the previously observed $Ξ_b(6227)^-$ state, along with the mass of the $Ξ_b^-$ baryon, are also reported. Both measurements are significantly more precise than, and consistent with, previously reported values.

The branching fraction is found to be ${\mathcal{B}(B^{0}\rightarrow D_{s}^{+}π^{-}) = (19.4 \pm 1.8\pm 1.3 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-6}}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the uncertainty on the $B^0 \to D^{-}π^{+}$, $D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}$ and $D^{-}\rightarrow K^{+}π^{-}π^{-}$ branching fractions. This is the most precise single measurement of this quantity to date. As this decay proceeds through a single amplitude involving a $b \to u$ charged-current transition, the result provides information on non-factorisable strong interaction effects and the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{ub}$. Additionally, the collision energy dependence of the hadronisation-fraction ratio $f_s/f_d$ is measured through $\bar{B}{}_{s}^{0}\rightarrow D_{s}^{+}π^{-}$ and $B^0 \to D^{-}π^{+}$ decays.

The inclusive $b \bar{b}$- and $c \bar{c}$-dijet production cross-sections in the forward region of $pp$ collisions are measured using a data sample collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb$^{-1}$. Differential cross-sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum and of the pseudorapidity of the leading jet, of the rapidity difference between the jets, and of the dijet invariant mass. A fiducial region for the measurement is defined by requiring that the two jets originating from the two $b$ or $c$ quarks are emitted with transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV$/c$, pseudorapidity in the range $2.2 < η< 4.2$, and with a difference in the azimuthal angle between the two jets greater than 1.5. The integrated $b \bar{b}$-dijet cross-section is measured to be $53.0 \pm 9.7$ nb, and the total $c \bar{c}$-dijet cross-section is measured to be $73 \pm 16$ nb. The ratio between $c \bar{c}$- and $b \bar{b}$-dijet cross-sections is also measured and found to be $1.37 \pm 0.27$. The results are in agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order.

An angular analysis of the $B^0 \to K^{*0} e^+ e^-$ decay is performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions collected with the LHCb experiment. The analysis is conducted in the very low dielectron mass squared ($q^2$) interval between $0.0008$ and $0.257~{\rm GeV}^2$, where the rate is dominated by the $B^0\to K^{\ast 0}γ$ transition with a virtual photon. The fraction of longitudinal polarisation of the $K^{\ast 0}$ meson, $F_{\rm L}$, is measured to be $F_{\rm L} = (4.4 \pm 2.6 \pm 1.4)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The $A_{\rm T}^{\rm Re}$ observable, which is related to the lepton forward-backward asymmetry, is measured to be $A_{\rm T}^{\rm Re}=-0.06 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.02$. The $A_{\rm T}^{(2)}$ and $A_{\rm T}^{\rm Im}$ transverse asymmetries, which are sensitive to the virtual photon polarisation, are found to be $A_{\rm T}^{(2)} = 0.11 \pm 0.10 \ \pm 0.02$ and $A_{\rm T}^{\rm Im} = 0.02 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.01$. The results are consistent with Standard Model predictions and provide the world's best constraint on the $b\to sγ$ photon polarisation.

The production of $χ_{c1}(3872)$ and $ψ(2S)$ hadrons is studied as a function of charged particle multiplicity in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb$^{-1}$. For both states, the fraction that is produced promptly at the collision vertex is found to decrease as charged particle multiplicity increases. The ratio of $χ_{c1}(3872)$ to $ψ(2S)$ cross-sections for promptly produced particles is also found to decrease with multiplicity, while no significant dependence on multiplicity is observed for the equivalent ratio of particles produced away from the collision vertex in $b$-hadron decays. This behavior is consistent with a calculation that models the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ structure as a compact tetraquark. Comparisons with model calculations and implications for the binding energy of the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ state are discussed.

Abstract:
A search for the doubly heavy $\mathitΞ_{bc}^{0}$ baryon using its decay to the $D^0pK^-$ final state is performed using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. No significant signal is found in the invariant mass range from 6.7 to 7.2 $\mathrm{GeV}/c^2$. Upper limits are set at $95\%$ credibility level on the ratio of the $\mathitΞ_{bc}^{0}$ production cross-section times its branching fraction to $D^0pK^-$ relative to that of the $\mathitΛ_{b}^{0} \to D^0pK^-$ decay. The limits are set as a function of the $\mathitΞ_{bc}^{0}$ mass and lifetime hypotheses, in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and in the transverse momentum region from 5 to 25 $\mathrm{GeV}/c$. Upper limits range from $1.7\times10^{-2}$ to $3.0\times10^{-1}$ for the considered $\mathitΞ_{bc}^{0}$ mass and lifetime hypotheses.

The analysis is carried out using LHCb proton-proton collision data taken at $\sqrt{s}=7,8,$ and $13$ TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$. In order to obtain a good description of the data, it is found to be necessary to include new spin-0 and spin-1 resonances in the $D^-K^+$ channel with masses around 2.9 GeV$/c^2$, and a new spin-0 charmonium resonance in proximity to the spin-2 $χ_{c2}(3930)$ state. The masses and widths of these resonances are determined, as are the relative contributions of all components in the amplitude model, which additionally include the vector charmonia $ψ(3770)$, $ψ(4040)$, $ψ(4160)$ and $ψ(4415)$ states and a nonresonant component.

The description of the data assuming that resonances only manifest in decays to the $D^+D^-$ pair is shown to be incomplete. This constitutes evidence for a new contribution to the decay, potentially one or more new charm-strange resonances in the $D^-K^+$ channel with masses around 2.9 GeV$/c^2$.

It can, however, also disintegrate into a $π^-$ meson and a $Λ_c^+$ baryon via $s$ quark decay or via $cs\to d c$ weak scattering. The interplay between the latter two processes governs the size of the branching fraction ${\cal{B}}$$(Ξ_c^0\to π^-Λ_c^+)$, first measured here to be $(0.55\pm 0.02 \pm 0.18)$%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and second systematic. This result is compatible with the larger of the theoretical predictions that connect models of hyperon decays using partially conserved axial currents and SU(3) symmetry with those involving the heavy-quark expansion and heavy-quark symmetry. In addition, the branching fraction of the normalization channel, ${\cal{B}}(Ξ_c^+\to p K^- π^+) = (1.135 \pm 0.002 \pm 0.387)$% is measured.

Production cross-sections for different pairs of charm hadrons are measured and kinematic correlations between the two charm hadrons are investigated. This is the first measurement of associated production of two charm hadrons in proton-lead collisions. The results confirm the predicted enhancement of double parton scattering production in proton-lead collisions compared to the single parton scattering production.

First-principles calculations and a model consideration of magnetically frustrated layered material PdCrO$_2$ are performed. The results on the exchange parameters are in agreement with the experimental data on the Curie-Weiss temperature ($θ$). We show that experimentally observed strong suppression of the Néel temperature ($T_N$) in comparison with the Curie-Weiss temperature is due to three main factors. First, as expected, this is connected with the layered structure and relatively small exchange interaction along the $c$ axis. Second, deformation of the ideal in-plane 120$^{\circ}$ magnetic structure is crucial to provide finite $T_N$ value. However, these two factors are still insufficient to explain low $T_N$ and the large frustration factor $|θ|/T_N$. Thus, we suggest a scenario of an exotic non-Fermi-liquid state in PdCrO$_2$ above $T_N$ within the frameworks of the Anderson lattice model, which seems to explain qualitatively all its main peculiarities.

The first observation of the decay $B^0 \rightarrow D^0 \overline{D}{}^0 K^+ π^-$ is reported using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment in 2011, 2012 and 2016. The measurement is performed in the full kinematically allowed range of the decay outside of the $D^{*-}$ region. The ratio of the branching fraction relative to that of the control channel $B^0 \rightarrow D^{*-} D^0 K^+$ is measured to be $\mathcal{R} = (14.2 \pm 1.1 \pm 1.0)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The absolute branching fraction of $B^0 \rightarrow D^0 \overline{D}{}^0 K^+ π^-$ decays is thus determined to be $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow D^0 \overline{D}{}^0 K^+ π^-) = (3.50 \pm 0.27 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.30) \times 10^{-4}$, where the third uncertainty is due to the branching fraction of the control channel. This decay mode is expected to provide insights to spectroscopy and the charm-loop contributions in rare semileptonic decays.

Searches are performed for a low-mass dimuon resonance, $X$, produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 fb$^{-1}$ and collected with the LHCb detector. The $X$ bosons can either decay promptly or displaced from the proton-proton collision, where in both cases the requirements placed on the event and the assumptions made about the production mechanisms are kept as minimal as possible. The searches for promptly decaying $X$ bosons explore the mass range from near the dimuon threshold up to 60 GeV, with nonnegligible $X$ widths considered above 20 GeV. The searches for displaced $X \to μ^+μ^-$ decays consider masses up to 3 GeV. None of the searches finds evidence for a signal and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the $X \to μ^+μ^-$ cross sections, each with minimal model dependence. In addition, these results are used to place world-leading constraints on GeV-scale bosons in the two-Higgs-doublet and hidden-valley scenarios.

The mass and natural width of the narrow $X(6900)$ structure are measured assuming a Breit--Wigner lineshape.

Some improvements and fine-tuning of the polarized ion source are performed and presented. The atomic beam source for the jet target has been modified as well. Precise measurements of the ratios of branching fractions with the intermediate $ψ_2(3823)$, $χ_{c1}(3872)$ and $ψ(2S)$ states are reported. The decay of $B^+\rightarrow ψ_2(3823)K^+$ with $ψ_2(3823)\rightarrow Jψπ^+π^-$ is observed for the first time with a significance of 5.1 standard deviations. The mass differences between the $ψ_2(3823)$, $χ_{c1}(3872)$ and $ψ(2S)$ states are measured to be $$ \begin{array}{rcl} m_{χ_{c1(3872)}} - m_{ψ_2(3823)} &= & 47.50 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.13\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2\,, \\ m_{ψ_2(3823)} - m_{ψ(2S)} &= & 137.98 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.14\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2\,, \\ m_{χ_{c1}(3872)} - m_{ψ(2S)} &= & 185.49 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.03\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2\,, \end{array} $$ resulting in the most precise determination of the $χ_{c1}(3782)$ mass. The width of the $ψ_2(3823)$ state is found to be below 5.2MeV at 90\% confidence level. Describing the {\mbox{lineshape}} with a Breit--Wigner function, the mass splitting between the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ and $ψ(2S)$ states, $Δm$, and the width of the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ state, $Γ_{\mathrm{BW}}$, are determined to be \begin{eqnarray*} Δm & = & 185.598 \pm 0.067 \pm 0.068\, \mathrm{MeV} \,, \\ Γ_{\mathrm{BW}} & = & \phantom{00}1.39\phantom{0} \pm 0.24\phantom{0} \pm 0.10\phantom{0} \mathrm{MeV} \,, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Using a Flatté-inspired model, the mode and full width at half maximum of the lineshape are determined to be \begin{eqnarray*} \mathrm{mode} & = 3871.69^{\,+\,0.00\,+\,0.05}_{\,-\,0.04\,-\,0.13} &\mathrm{MeV} \\ \mathrm{FWHM} & = 0.22^{\,+\,0.07\,+\,0.11}_{\,-\,0.06\,-\,0.13}& \mathrm{MeV} . \end{eqnarray*} An investigation of the analytic structure of the Flatté amplitude reveals a pole structure, which is compatible with a quasi-bound $D^0\bar{D}^{*0}$ state but a quasi-virtual state is still allowed at the level of $2$ standard deviations.

We show how low-energy electronic models derived from the first-principles electronic structure calculations can help to rationalize the magnetic properties of two lacunar spinel compounds GaM4S8 with light (M=V) and heavy (M=Mo) transition-metal elements, which are responsible for different spin-orbit interaction strength. In the model, each magnetic lattice point was associated with the M4S4 molecule, and the model itself was formulated in the basis of molecular Wannier functions constructed for three magnetic t2 bands. The effects of rhombohedral distortion, spin-orbit interaction, band filling, and the screening of Coulomb interactions in the t2 bands are discussed in details. The electronic model is further treated in the superexchange approximation, which allows us to derive an effective spin model for the energy and electric polarization ($P$) depending on the relative orientation of spins in the bonds, and study the properties of this model by means of classical Monte Carlo simulations with the emphasis on the possible formation of the skyrmionic phase. While isotropic exchange interactions clearly dominate in GaV4S8, all types of interactions -- isotropic, antisymmetric, and symmetric anisotropic -- are comparable in the case of GaMo4S8. Particularly, large uniaxial exchange anisotropy has a profound effect on the properties of GaMo4S8. On the one hand, it raises the Curie temperature by opening a gap in the spectrum of magnon excitations. On the other hand, it strongly affects the skyrmionic phase by playing the role of a molecular field, which facilitates the formation of skyrmions, but makes them relatively insensitive to the external magnetic field in the large part of the phase diagram. We predict reversal of the magnetic dependence of $P$ in the case of GaMo4S8 caused by the reversal of direction of the rhombohedral distortion.

This paper presents an analysis of the $Λ^0_b\rightarrow J/ψΛ$ angular distribution and the transverse production polarisation of $Λ^0_b$ baryons in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The measurements are performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb experiment. The polarisation is determined in a fiducial region of $Λ^0_b$ transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of $1 < p_{T} < 20$ GeV$/c$ and $2 < η< 5$, respectively. The data are consistent with $Λ^0_b$ baryons being produced unpolarised in this region. The parity-violating asymmetry parameter of the $Λ\rightarrow pπ^-$ decay is also determined from the data and its value is found to be consistent with a recent measurement by the BES\,III collaboration.

The single-site anisotropy vanishes for the spin-1/2 as a consequence of Kramers degeneracy. We argue that similar property holds for the magnetically induced electric polarization P, which should depend only on the relative orientation of spins in the bonds but not on the direction of each individual spin. Thus, for insulating multiferroic compounds, P can be decomposed in terms of pairwise isotropic, antisymmetric, and anisotropic contributions, which can be rigorously derived in the framework of the superexchange (SE) theory, in an analogy with the spin Hamiltonian. The SE theory also allows us to identify the microscopic mechanism, which stands behind each contribution. The most controversial and intriguing one is antisymmetric or spin-current mechanism. In this work, we propose that the disputed magnetoelectric (ME) properties of Ba2CuGe2O7 can be explained solely by the spin-current mechanism, while other contributions are either small or forbidden by symmetry. First we explicitly show how the cycloidal spin order induces the experimentally observed P in the direction perpendicular to the xy plane, which can be naturally explained by the spin-current mechanism operating in the out-of-plane bonds. Then, we unveil previously overlooked ME effect, where the application of the magnetic field perpendicular to the plane not only causes the incommensurate-commensurate transition, but also flips P into the plane due to the spin-current mechanism operating in the neighboring bonds within this plane. In both cases, the magnitude and direction of P can be controlled by rotating the spin pattern in the xy plane. Our analysis is based on a realistic spin model, which was rigorously derived from the first-principles calculations and supplemented with the new algorithm for the construction of localized Wannier functions obeying the crystallographic symmetry of Ba2CuGe2O7.

The basic element of the experimental setup is a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) which can detect the incoming muons and the products of the fusion reaction. The TPC operated with the $D_2 + ^3He (5%)$ gas mixture at $31K$ temperature. About $10^8$ $^3\!He\;μ\;d$ molecules were produced with only 2 registered candidates for the muon catalyzed $^3\!He\;d$ fusion with the expected background $N_{bg}=2.2\pm 0.3$ events. This gives an upper limit for the probability of the fusion decay of the $^3\!He\;μ\;d$ molecule $P_{F}(^3\!He\;μ\;d)\leq 1.1\cdot 10^{-7}$ at 90% C.L. Also presented are the measured formation rate of the $^3\!He\;μ\;d$ molecule $λ_{d3He}=192(3)\cdot 10^6 s^{-1}$ and the probability of the fast muon transfer from the excited to the ground state of the $μ\;d$ atom $q_{1S}=0.80(3)$.

We unveil the microscopic origin of largely debated magnetism in the Mo$_{3}$O$_{8}$ cluster systems. Upon considering an extended Hubbard model at 1/6 filling on the anisotropic kagomé lattice formed by the Mo atoms, we argue that its ground state is determined by the competition between kinetic energy and intersite Coulomb interactions, which is controlled by the trimerisation of the kagomé lattice into the Mo$_{3}$O$_{13}$ clusters. Based on first-principles calculations, we show that the strong interaction limit is realised in LiZn$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{8}$ revealing a plaquette charge order with unpaired spins at the resonating hexagons, whose origin is solely related to the opposite signs of intracluster and intercluster hop**s, in contrast to all previous scenarios. On the other hand, both Li$_{2}$InMo$_{3}$O$_{8}$ and Li$_{2}$ScMo$_{3}$O$_{8}$ are demonstrated to fall into the weak interaction limit where the electrons are well localised at the Mo$_{3}$O$_{13}$ clusters. While the former is found to exhibit long-range antiferromagnetic order, the latter is more likely to reveal short-range order with quantum spin liquid-like excitations. Our results not only reproduce most of the experimentally observed features of these unique materials, but will also help to describe various properties in other quantum cluster magnets.

The kamiokite, Fe$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$, is regarded as a promising material exhibiting giant magnetoelectric (ME) effect at the relatively high temperature $T$. Here, we explore this phenomenon on the basis of first-principles electronic structure calculations. For this purpose we construct a realistic model describing the behavior of magnetic Fe $3d$ electrons and further map it onto the isotropic spin model. Our analysis suggests two possible scenaria for Fe$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$. The first one is based on the homogeneous charge distribution of the Fe$^{2+}$ ions amongst tetrahedral ($t$) and octahedral ($o$) sites, which tends to low the crystallographic P6$_3$mc symmetry through the formation of an orbitally ordered state. Nevertheless, the effect of the orbital ordering on interatomic exchange interactions does not seem to be strong, so that the magnetic properties can be described reasonably well by averaged interactions obeying the P6$_3$mc symmetry. The second scenario, which is supported by obtained parameters of on-site Coulomb repulsion and respects the P6$_3$mc symmetry, implies the charge disproportionation involving somewhat exotic $1+$ ionization state of the $t$-Fe sites (and $3+$ state of the $o$-Fe sites). Somewhat surprisingly, these scenarios are practically indistinguishable from the viewpoint of exchange interactions, which are practically identical in these two cases. However, the spin-dependent properties of the electric polarization are expected to be different due to the strong difference in the polarity of the Fe$^{2+}$-Fe$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{1+}$-Fe$^{3+}$ bonds. Our analysis uncovers the basic aspects of the ME effect in Fe$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$. Nevertheless, the quantitative description should involve other ingredients, apparently related to the lattice and orbitals degrees of freedom.

Microscopic origin of the ferromagnetic (FM) exchange coupling in CrCl$_3$ and CrI$_3$, their common aspects and differences, are investigated on the basis of density functional theory combined with realistic modeling approach for the analysis of interatomic exchange interactions. We perform a comparative study based on the pseudopotential and linear muffin-tin orbital methods by treating the effects of electron exchange and correlation in GGA and LSDA, respectively. The results of ordinary band structure calculations are used in order to construct the minimal tight-binding type models describing the behavior of the magnetic Cr $3d$ and ligand $p$ bands in the basis of localized Wannier functions, and evaluate the effective exchange coupling ($J_{\rm eff}$) between two Cr sublattices employing four different technique: (i) Second-order Green's function perturbation theory for infinitesimal spin rotations of the LSDA (GGA) potential at the Cr sites; (ii) Enforcement of the magnetic force theorem in order to treat both Cr and ligand spins on a localized footing; (iii) Constrained total-energy calculations with an external field, treated in the framework of self-consistent linear response theory. We argue that the ligand states play crucial role in the ferromagnetism of Cr trihalides, though their contribution to $J_{\rm eff}$ strongly depends on additional assumptions, which are traced back to fundamentals of adiabatic spin dynamics. Particularly, by neglecting ligand spins in the Green's function method, $J_{\rm eff}$ can easily become antiferromagnetic, while by treating them as localized, one can severely overestimate the FM coupling. The best considered approach is based on the constraint method, where the ligand states are allowed to relax in response to each instantaneous reorientation of the Cr spins, controlled by the external field.

Here, we propose that a very similar situation can be realized in cuprates when the Cu$^{2+}$ ions reside in a tetrahedral environment, like in spinel compounds. Using first-principles electronic structure calculations, we construct a realistic model for the diamond lattice of the Cu$^{2+}$ ions in CuAl$_2$O$_4$ and show that the magnetic properties of this compound are largely controlled by anisotropic compass-type exchange interactions that dramatically modify the magnetic ground state by lifting the spiral spin-liquid degeneracy and stabilizing a commensurate single-$\boldsymbol{q}$ spiral.

The lacunar spinel GaV$_{4}$S$_{8}$ was recently suggested to be a prototype multiferroic material hosting skyrmion lattice states with a sizeable polarization $\boldsymbol{P}$ coupled to magnetic order. We explain this phenomenon on the microscopic level. On the basis of density functional theory, we construct an effective model describing the behavior of magnetically active electrons in a weakly coupled lattice formed by molecular orbitals of the (V$_{4}$S$_{4}$)$^{5+}$ clusters. By applying superexchange theory combined with the Berry-phase theory for $\boldsymbol{P}$, we derive a compass model relating the energy and polarization change with the directions of spins $\boldsymbol{e}_{i}$ in magnetic bonds. We argue that, although each skyrmion layer is mainly formed by superexchange interactions in the same plane, the spin-dependence of $\boldsymbol{P}$ arises from the stacking misalignment of such planes in the perpendicular direction, which is inherent to the lacunar spinel structure. We predict a strong competition of isotropic, $\sim \boldsymbol{e}_{i}\boldsymbol{e}_{j}$, and antisymmetric, $\sim \boldsymbol{e}_{i} \times \boldsymbol{e}_{j}$, contributions to $\boldsymbol{P}$ that explains the experimentally observed effect.

The motion of fast electrons through the crystal during axial channeling could be regular and chaotic. The dynamical chaos in quantum systems manifests itself in both statistical properties of energy spectra and morphology of wave functions of the individual stationary states. In this report, we investigate the axial channeling of high and low energy electrons and positrons near [100] direction of a silicon crystal. This case is particularly interesting because of the fact that the chaotic motion domain occupies only a small part of the phase space for the channeling electrons whereas the motion of the channeling positrons is substantially chaotic for the almost all initial conditions. The energy levels of transverse motion, as well as the wave functions of the stationary states, have been computed numerically by the method presented at previous RREPS. Note that the potential of the elementary cell in (100) plane of silicon crystal possesses the symmetry of the square. The group theory methods had been used for classification of the computed eigenfunctions and identification of the non-degenerate and doubly degenerate energy levels. The channeling radiation spectrum for the low energy electrons has been also computed.
