We derive a strain-gradient theory for plasticity as the $Γ$-limit of discrete dislocation fractional energies, without the introduction of a core-radius. By using the finite horizon fractional gradient introduced by Bellido, Cueto, and Mora-Corral of 2023, we consider a nonlocal model of semi-discrete dislocations, in which the stored elastic energy is computed via the fractional gradient of order $1-α$. As $α$ goes to $0$, we show that suitably rescaled energies $Γ$-converge to the macroscopic strain-gradient model of Garroni, Leoni, and Ponsiglione of 2010.

An Ahlfors-type regularity result for free-discontinuity energies defined on the space $SBV^{\varphi}$ of special functions of bounded variation with $\varphi$-growth, where $\varphi$ is a generalized Orlicz function, is proved. Our analysis expands on the regularity theory for minimizers of a class of free-discontinuity problems in the non-standard growth case.

We derive a first order optimality condition for a class of agent-based systems, as well as for their mean-field counterpart. A relevant difficulty of our analysis is that the state equation is formulated on possibly infinite-dimensional convex subsets of Banach spaces, as required by some problems in multi-population dynamics. Due to the lack of a linear structure and of local compactness, the usual tools of needle variations and linearisation procedures used to derive Pontryagin type conditions have to be generalised to the setting at hand. This is done by considering suitable notions of differentials and by a careful inspection of the underlying functional structures.

Our argument is conceptually very simple and, for $p = 2$, uses only the classical Riesz representation theorem in Hilbert spaces. Moreover, the argument for the general exponent $1<p<\infty$ remains the same, the only change being invoking now the $q$-Riesz representation theorem (with $q$ the harmonic conjugate of $p$). We also complement the analysis with elementary derivations of Poincaré-Korn inequalities in bounded and unbounded domains, which are essential tools in showing the coercivity of variational problems of elasticity but also propedeutic to the proof of the first Korn inequality.

We analyse the $Γ$-convergence of general non-local convolution type functionals with varying densities depending on the space variable and on the symmetrized gradient. The limit is a local free-discontinuity functional, where the bulk term can be completely characterized in terms of an asymptotic cell formula. From that, we can deduce an homogenisation result in the stochastic setting.

We analyze the problem of controlling a multi-agent system with additive white noise through parsimonious interventions on a selected subset of the agents (leaders). For such a controlled system with a SDE constraint, we introduce a rigorous limit process towards an infinite dimensional optimal control problem constrained by the coupling of a system of ODE for the leaders with a McKean-Vlasov-type SDE, governing the dynamics of the prototypical follower. The latter is, under some assumptions on the distribution of the initial data, equivalent with a (nonlinear parabolic) PDE-ODE system. The derivation of the limit mean-field optimal control problem is achieved by linking the mean-field limit of the governing equations together with the $Γ$-limit of the cost functionals for the finite dimensional problems.

The notion of Inertial Balanced Viscosity (IBV) solution to rate-independent evolutionary processes is introduced. Such solutions are characterized by an energy balance where a suitable, rate-dependent, dissipation cost is optimized at jump times. The cost is reminiscent of the limit effect of small inertial terms. Therefore, this notion proves to be a suitable one to describe the asymptotic behavior of evolutions of mechanical systems with rate-independent dissipation in the limit of vanishing inertia and viscosity. It is indeed proved, in finite dimension, that these evolutions converge to IBV solutions. If the viscosity operator is neglected, or has a nontrivial kernel, the weaker notion of Inertial Virtual Viscosity (IVV) solutions is introduced, and the analogous convergence result holds. Again in a finite-dimensional context, it is also shown that IBV and IVV solutions can be obtained via a natural extension of the Minimizing Movements algorithm, where the limit effect of inertial terms is taken into account.

A mean-field selective optimal control problem of multipopulation dynamics via transient leadership is considered. The agents in the system are described by their spatial position and their probability of belonging to a certain population. The dynamics in the control problem is characterized by the presence of an activation function which tunes the control on each agent according to the membership to a population, which, in turn, evolves according to a Markov-type jump process. This way, a hypothetical policy maker can select a restricted pool of agents to act upon based, for instance, on their time-dependent influence on the rest of the population. A finite-particle control problem is studied and its mean-field limit is identified via $Γ$-convergence, ensuring convergence of optimal controls. The dynamics of the mean-field optimal control is governed by a continuity-type equation without diffusion. Specific applications in the context of opinion dynamics are discussed with some numerical experiments.

We prove compactness with respect to $Γ$-convergence and represent the $Γ$-limit in an integral form defined on the space of generalized special functions of bounded deformation ($GSBD^p$). We identify the integrands in terms of asymptotic cell formulas and prove a non-interaction property between bulk and surface contributions. Eventually, we investigate sequences of corresponding boundary value problems and show convergence of minimum values and minimizers. In particular, our techniques allow to characterize relaxations of functionals on $GSBD^p$, and cover the classical case of periodic homogenization.

An alternate Lagrangian scheme at discrete times is proposed for the approximation of a nonlinear continuity equation arising as a mean-field limit of spatially inhomogeneous evolutionary games, describing the evolution of a system of spatially distributed agents with strategies, or labels, whose payoff depends also on the current position of the agents. The scheme is Lagrangian, as it traces the evolution of position and labels along characteristics and is alternate, as it consists of the following two steps: first the distribution of strategies or labels is updated according to a best performance criterion and then this is used by the agents to evolve their position. A general convergence result is provided in the space of probability measures. In the special cases of replicator-type systems and reversible Markov chains, variants of the scheme, where the explicit step in the evolution of the labels is replaced by an implicit one, are also considered and convergence results are provided.

In this paper we prove an integral representation formula for a general class of energies defined on the space of generalized special functions of bounded deformation ($GSBD^p$) in arbitrary space dimensions. Functionals of this type naturally arise in the modeling of linear elastic solids with surface discontinuities including phenomena as fracture, damage, surface tension between different elastic phases, or material voids. Our approach is based on the global method for relaxation devised in Bouchittè et al. '98 and a recent Korn-type inequality in $GSBD^p$ (Cagnetti-Chambolle-Scardia '20). Our general strategy also allows to generalize integral representation results in $SBD^p$, obtained in dimension two (Conti-Focardi-Iurlano '16), to higher dimensions, and to revisit results in the framework of generalized special functions of bounded variation ($GSBV^p$).

In this work, we provide a characterization result for lower semicontinuity of surface energies defined on piecewise rigid functions, i.e., functions which are piecewise affine on a Caccioppoli partition where the derivative in each component is a skew symmetric matrix. This characterization is achieved by means of an integral condition, called $BD$-ellipticity, which is in the spirit of $BV$-ellipticity defined by Ambrosio and Braides. By specific examples we show that this novel concept is in fact stronger compared to its $BV$ analog. We further provide a sufficient condition implying $BD$-ellipticity which we call symmetric joint convexity. This notion can be checked explicitly for certain classes of surface energies which are relevant for applications, e.g., for variational fracture models. Finally, we give a direct proof that surface energies with symmetric jointly convex integrands are lower semicontinuous also on the larger space of $GSBD^p$ functions.

In a suitable regime between the competing scales, namely if the discretization step $δ$ is smaller than the ellipticity parameter $\varepsilon$, we show the $Γ$-convergence of the model to the Griffith functional, containing only a term enforcing Dirichlet boundary conditions and no $L^p$ fidelity term. Restricting to two dimensions, we also address the case in which a (linearized) constraint of non-interpenetration of matter is added in the limit functional, in the spirit of a recent work by Chambolle, Conti and Francfort.

The model couples a particle dynamics driven by a nonlocal velocity with a Markow-type jump process on the probability that each agent has of belonging to a given population. A general functional analytic framework for the well-posedness of the problem is established, and some concrete applications are presented, both in the case of discrete and continuous set of labels. In the particular case of a leader-follower dynamics, the existence and approximation results recently obtained in [2] are recovered and generalized as a byproduct of the abstract approach proposed.

We analyze integral representation and $Γ$-convergence properties of functionals defined on \emph{piecewise rigid functions}, i.e., functions which are piecewise affine on a Caccioppoli partition where the derivative in each component is constant and lies in a set without rank-one connections. Such functionals account for interfacial energies in the variational modeling of materials which locally show a rigid behavior. Our results are based on localization techniques for $Γ$-convergence and a careful adaption of the global method for relaxation (Bouchitté et al. 1998, 2001) to this new setting, under rather general assumptions. They constitute a first step towards the investigation of lower semicontinuity, relaxation, and homogenization for free-discontinuity problems in spaces of (generalized) functions of bounded deformation.

We provide a mean-field description for a leader-follower dynamics with mass transfer among the two populations. This model allows the transition from followers to leaders and vice versa, with scalar-valued transition rates depending nonlinearly on the global state of the system at each time.
We first prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions for the leader-follower dynamics, under suitable assumptions. We then establish, for an appropriate choice of the initial datum, the equivalence of the system with a PDE-ODE system, that consists of a continuity equation over the state space and an ODE for the transition from leader to follower or vice versa. We further introduce a stochastic process approximating the PDE, together with a jump process that models the switch between the two populations. Using a propagation of chaos argument, we show that the particle system generated by these two processes converges in probability to a solution of the PDE-ODE system. Finally, several numerical simulations of social interactions dynamics modeled by our system are discussed.

In this paper we study the vanishing inertia and viscosity limit of a second order system set in an Euclidean space, driven by a possibly nonconvex time-dependent potential satisfying very general assumptions. By means of a variational approach, we show that the solutions of the singularly perturbed problem converge to a curve of stationary points of the energy and characterize the behavior of the limit evolution at jump times. At those times, the left and right limits of the evolution are connected by a finite number of heteroclinic solutions to the unscaled equation.

We perform a convergence analysis of a discrete-in-time minimization scheme approximating a finite dimensional singularly perturbed gradient flow. We allow for different scalings between the viscosity parameter $\varepsilon$ and the time scale $τ$. When the ratio $\frac{\varepsilon}τ$ diverges, we rigorously prove the convergence of this scheme to a (discontinuous) Balanced Viscosity solution of the quasistatic evolution problem obtained as formal limit, when $\varepsilon\to 0$, of the gradient flow. We also characterize the limit evolution corresponding to an asymptotically finite ratio between the scales, which is of a different kind. In this case, a discrete interfacial energy is optimized at jump times.

In this paper we study the singular vanishing-viscosity limit of a gradient flow in a finite dimensional Hilbert space, focusing on the so-called delayed loss of stability of stationary solutions. We find a class of time-dependent energy functionals and initial conditions for which we can explicitly calculate the first discontinuity time $t^*$ of the limit. For our class of functionals, $t^*$ coincides with the blow-up time of the solutions of the linearized system around the equilibrium, and is in particular strictly greater than the time $t_c$ where strict local minimality with respect to the driving energy gets lost. Moreover, we show that, in a right neighborhood of $t^*$, rescaled solutions of the singularly perturbed problem converge to heteroclinic solutions of the gradient flow. Our results complement the previous ones by Zanini, where the situation we consider was excluded by assuming the so-called transversality conditions, and the limit evolution consisted of strict local minimizers of the energy up to a negligible set of times.

We study the stable configurations of a thin three-dimensional weakly prestrained rod subject to a terminal load as the thickness of the section vanishes. By $Γ$-convergence we derive a one-dimensional limit theory and show that isolated local minimizers of the limit model can be approached by local minimizers of the three-dimensional model. In the case of isotropic materials and for two-layers prestrained three-dimensional models the limit energy further simplifies to that of a Kirchhoff rod-model of an intrinsically curved beam. In this case we study the limit theory and investigate global and/or local stability of straight and helical configurations. Through some simple simulations we finally compare our results with real experiments.

In this paper we prove a two-dimensional existence result for a variational model of crack growth for brittle materials in the realm of linearized elasticity. Starting with a time-discretized version of the evolution driven by a prescribed boundary load, we derive a time-continuous quasistatic crack growth in the framework of generalized special functions of bounded deformation (GSBD). As the time-discretization step tends to $0$, the major difficulty lies in showing the stability of the static equilibrium condition, which is achieved by means of a Jump Transfer Lemma generalizing the result of Francfort and Larsen [Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 56 (2003), 1465--1500] to the GSBD setting. Moreover, we present a general compactness theorem for this framework and prove existence of the evolution without the necessity of a-priori bounds on the displacements or applied body forces.

We introduce a novel constructive approach to define time evolution of critical points of an energy functional. Our procedure, which is different from other more established approaches based on viscosity approximations in infinite dimension, is prone to efficient and consistent numerical implementations, and allows for an existence proof under very general assumptions. We consider in particular rather nonsmooth and nonconvex energy functionals, provided the domain of the energy is finite dimensional. Nevertheless, in the infinite dimensional case study of a cohesive fracture model, we prove a consistency theorem of a discrete-to-continuum limit. We show that a quasistatic evolution can be indeed recovered as a limit of evolutions of critical points of finite dimensional discretizations of the energy, constructed according to our scheme. To illustrate the results, we provide several numerical experiments both in one and two dimensions. These agree with the crack initiation criterion, which states that a fracture appears only when the stress overcomes a certain threshold, depending on the material.

Such problems arise naturally as $Γ$-limits of optimal control problems subject to ODE constraints, modeling, for instance, external interventions on crowd dynamics. We obtain these first-order optimality conditions in the form of Hamiltonian flows in the Wasserstein space of probability measures with forward-backward boundary conditions with respect to the first and second marginals, respectively. In particular, we recover the equations and their solutions by means of a constructive procedure, which can be seen as the mean-field limit of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle applied to the discrete optimal control problems, under a suitable scaling of the adjoint variables.

We introduce the concept of {\it mean-field optimal control} which is the rigorous limit process connecting finite dimensional optimal control problems with ODE constraints modeling multi-agent interactions to an infinite dimensional optimal control problem with a constraint given by a PDE of Vlasov-type, governing the dynamics of the probability distribution of interacting agents. While in the classical mean-field theory one studies the behavior of a large number of small individuals {\it freely interacting} with each other, by simplifying the effect of all the other individuals on any given individual by a single averaged effect, we address the situation where the individuals are actually influenced also by an external {\it policy maker}, and we propagate its effect for the number $N$ of individuals going to infinity. On the one hand, from a modeling point of view, we take into account also that the policy maker is constrained to act according to optimal strategies promoting its most parsimonious interaction with the group of individuals. This will be realized by considering cost functionals including $L^1$-norm terms penalizing a broadly distributed control of the group, while promoting its sparsity. On the other hand, from the analysis point of view, and for the sake of generality, we consider broader classes of convex control penalizations. In order to develop this new concept of limit rigorously, we need to carefully combine the classical concept of mean-field limit, connecting the finite dimensional system of ODE describing the dynamics of each individual of the group to the PDE describing the dynamics of the respective probability distribution, with the well-known concept of $Γ$-convergence to show that optimal strategies for the finite dimensional problems converge to optimal strategies of the infinite dimensional problem.

Motivated by variational models in continuum mechanics, we introduce a novel algorithm to perform nonsmooth and nonconvex minimizations with linear constraints in Euclidean spaces. We show how this algorithm is actually a natural generalization of the well-known non-stationary augmented Lagrangian method for convex optimization. The relevant features of this approach are its applicability to a large variety of nonsmooth and nonconvex objective functions, its guaranteed convergence to critical points of the objective energy independently of the choice of the initial value, and its simplicity of implementation. In fact, the algorithm results in a nested double loop iteration. In the inner loop an augmented Lagrangian algorithm performs an adaptive finite number of iterations on a fixed quadratic and strictly convex perturbation of the objective energy, depending on a parameter which is adapted by the external loop. To show the versatility of this new algorithm, we exemplify how it can be used for computing critical points in inverse free-discontinuity variational models, such as the Mumford-Shah functional, and, by doing so, we also derive and analyze new iterative thresholding algorithms.
