In the framework of density functional theory, the structural and magnetic properties of Fe$_{100-x}$Al$_x$ alloys (${5 \leq x \leq 25}$~at.\%) with the different structural order are investigated. Using the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Green's function method with a coherent potential approximation, the equilibrium lattice parameters, ground-state energy, and shear moduli for D0$_3$, B2, and A2 structures are calculated. For all structures, the optimized lattice constant increases while the shear modulus demonstrates a decreasing behavior with increasing Al content. The tetragonal magnetostriction constants are estimated by the torque method. The A2 and B2 structures provide a positive contribution to the tetragonal magnetostriction. With the help of Monte Carlo simulations of the Heisenberg model, the Curie temperatures are obtained in a wide concentration range.

On the basis of density functional calculations, we report on a comprehensive study of the influences of atomic arrangement and Ni substitution for Al on the ground state structural and magnetic properties for Fe$_2$Ni$_{1+x}$Al$_{1-x}$ Heusler alloys. We discuss systematically the competition between five Heusler-type structures formed by shuffles of Fe and Ni atoms and their thermodynamic stability. All~Ni-rich Fe$_2$Ni$_{1+x}$Al$_{1-x}$ tend to decompose into a dual-phase mixture consisting of Fe$_2$NiAl and~FeNi. The~successive replacement of Ni by Al leads to a change of ground state structure and eventually an increase in magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy~(MAE). We predict for stoichiometric Fe$_2$NiAl a ground state structure with nearly cubic lattice parameters but alternating layers of Fe and Ni possessing an uniaxial MAE which is even larger than tetragonal L1$_0$-FeNi. This opens an alternative route for improving the phase stability and magnetic properties in FeNi-based permanent magnets.

We discuss systematically the competition between five cubic Heusler-type structures formed by shuffles of Fe and Ni atoms to reveal routes for improving the phase stability and magnetic properties, in particular magnetocrystalline anisotropy~(MAE). We predict that in case of Fe$_2$NiAl the ground state cubic structure with alternated layers of Fe and Ni possesses the highest uniaxial MAE which twice larger than that for the tetragonal L1$_0$ FeNi. The successive Ni do** at Al sublattice leads to a change of ground state structure and to reduce of the MAE. In addition, the phase stability against the decomposition into the stable systems at finite-temperatures is discussed. All~Ni-rich Fe$_2$Ni$_{1+x}$Al$_{1-x}$ are turned to be decomposed into a dual-phase consisting of Fe$_2$NiAl and FeNi.

Using the density functional theory (DFT) withreliable implementations of the electron correlation effects, we find Mn2ScSi total energy curvesconsisting of distinct branches with a very small energy difference. The phase at low lattice crystalvolume is a low magnetic half-metallic state while the phase at high lattice crystal volume is a highmagnetic metallic state. We suggest that the transition between half-metallic and metallic statescan be triggered by a triaxial contraction/expansion of the crystal lattice or by an external magneticfield if we assume that the lattice is cubic and remains cubic under expansion/contraction. However, the phase at high volume can also undergo an austenite-martensite phase transition because of thepresence of Jahn-Teller active3delectrons on the Mn atoms.

The stability of the nonmodulated martensitic phase, the austenitic Fermi surface and the phonon dispersion relations for ferromagnetic Ni$_2$MnGa are studied using density functional theory. Exchange-correlation effects are considered with various degrees of precision, starting from the simplest local spin density approximation (LSDA), then adding corrections within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and finally, including the meta-GGA corrections within the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN). We discuss a simple procedure to reduce a possible overestimation of magnetization and underestimation of nesting vector in SCAN by parametrically decreasing self-interaction corrections.

Magnetization measurements on bulk-grown samples show superconducting behavior below 14 K. These results indicate the possibility of using V$_3$Ga for quantum technology devices utilizing both superconductivity and antiferromagnetism at the same temperature.

Since the standard GGA scheme does not provide a precise description of the electronic properties near the Fermi level, we use a meta-GGA functional capable to improve the description of the electronic properties of CoFeTiAl and Co$_2$FeSi. In particular, we find a better agreement with the experiment for the magnetic moment and the energy-band gap. Moreover, our calculations show that pressure enhances the insulating properties of Co$_2$FeSi and CoTiFeAl.

In the present work, the aspects of magnetic and structural properties of Ni-Mn-Ga alloys are described in the framework of fist-principles approach and mapped into ternary composition diagrams. The stable atomic arrangement and magnetic alignment for compositions with cubic austenite and tetragonal martensite structures across phase diagrams are predicted. It is shown that Ni- and Ga-rich compositions possess the regular Heusler structure in contrast to Mn-rich compositions with inverse Heusler structure as favorable one. Compositions with unstable austenite structure are concentrated in the left and right sides of diagram whereas compositions with unstable martensite structure are located in the low-middle part of diagram. The magnetic phase diagrams showing regions with the ferromagnetic order and the complex ferrimagnetic order for austenitic and martensitic compositions are obtained. The results of calculations are in a good agreement with available experimental data.

We have investigated the interplay between magnetic and structural degrees of freedom in elemental Mn. The equilibrium volume is shown to depend critically on the magnetic interactions between the Mn atoms. While the standard generalized-gradient-approximation underestimates the equilibrium volume, a more accurate treatment of the effects of electronic localization and magnetism is found to solve this longstanding problem. We capture well the complexity of the large 58 atoms per unit cell $α$-Mn system for the first time, including its charge and spin patterns and the canting of spins with respect to the average magnetization direction.

The strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) semi-local functional for exchange-correlation is deployed to study the ground-state properties of ternary Heusler alloys transforming martensitically. The calculations are performed for ferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, and antiferromagnetic phases. Comparisons between SCAN and generalized gradient approximation (GGA) are discussed. We find that SCAN yields smaller lattice parameters and higher magnetic moments compared to the GGA corresponding values for both austenite and martensite phases. Furthermore, in the case of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic Heusler compounds, GGA and SCAN display similar trends in the total energy as a function of lattice constant and tetragonal ratio. However, for some ferrimagnetic Mn-rich Heusler compounds, different magnetic ground states are found within GGA and SCAN.

The structural and magnetic properties of functional Ni-Mn-Z (Z = Ga, In, Sn) Heusler alloys are studied by first-principles and Monte Carlo methods. The \textit{ab initio} calculations give a basic understanding of the underlying physics which is associated with the strong competition of ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions with increasing chemical disorder. The resulting $d$-electron orbital dependent magnetic ordering is the driving mechanism of magnetostructural instability which is accompanied by a drop of magnetization governing the size of the magnetocaloric effect. The thermodynamic properties are calculated by using the \textit{ab initio} magnetic exchange coupling constants in finite-temperature Monte Carlo simulations, which are used to accurately reproduce the experimental entropy and adiabatic temperature changes across the magnetostructural transition.
