Investigation of materials that exhibit quantum phase transition provides valuable insights into fundamental problems in physics. We present neutron scattering under pressure in a triangular-lattice antiferromagnet which has a quantum disorder in the low-pressure phase and a noncollinear structure in the high-pressure phase. The neutron spectrum continuously evolves through the critical pressure; a single mode in the disordered state becomes soft with the pressure, and it splits into gapless and gapped modes in the ordered phase. Extended spin-wave theory reveals that the longitudinal and transverse fluctuations of spins are hybridized in the modes because of the noncollinearity, and novel magnetic excitations are formed. We report a new hybridization of the phase and amplitude fluctuations of the order parameter in a spontaneously symmetry-broken state.

A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a novel class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirality order.

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the low-energy spin excitations of 112-type iron pnictide Ca$_{0.82}$La$_{0.18}$Fe$_{0.96}$Ni$_{0.04}$As$_{2}$ with bulk superconductivity below $T_c=22$ K. A two-dimensional spin resonance mode is found around $E=$ 11 meV, where the resonance energy is almost temperature independent and linearly scales with $T_c$ along with other iron-based superconductors. Polarized neutron analysis reveals the resonance is nearly isotropic in spin space without any $L$ modulations. Due to the unique monoclinic structure with additional zigzag arsenic chains, the As $4p$ orbitals contribute to a three-dimensional hole pocket around $Γ$ point and an extra electron pocket at $X$ point. Our results suggest that the energy and momentum distribution of spin resonance does not directly response to the $k_z$ dependence of fermiology, and the spin resonance intrinsically is a spin-1 mode from singlet-triplet excitations of the Cooper pairs in the case of weak spin-orbital coupling.

Strong magnetic Bragg peaks observed in the $d$-spacing shorter than 6.0 Å were indexed by the propagation vectors of $\boldsymbol{k}_{0} = (0,0,0)$. Additional peaks with weak intensities in the range of the $d$-spacing longer than 8.0 Å were indexed by the incommensurate vectors of $\boldsymbol{k}_{1}=(0.3209(2),0.3209(2),0)$ and $\boldsymbol{k}_{2}=(0.3338(4),0.3338(4),0)$. Magnetic structure analysis exhibits that the 120$^{\circ}$ structure with the {\it tail-chase} geometry having $\boldsymbol{k}_0$ is modulated by the incommensurate vectors. The classical calculation of the Kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet having the antiferromagnetic 2nd-neighbor interaction, the ground state of which is degenerated 120$^{\circ}$ structures with $\boldsymbol{k}_0$, reveals that the magnetic dipole-dipole (MDD) interaction including up to the 4th neighbor terms selects the tail-chase structure. The observed modulation of the tail-chase structure is indicated to be due to a small perturbation such as the long-range MDD interaction or the interlayer interaction.

Magnetic excitations are observed in the energy range of $\hbar ω\lesssim 10$ meV having an anisotropy gap of 2 meV at 2 K. We perform spin-wave calculations to identify the spin model. The obtained microscopic parameters are consistent with the location of the stripe structure in the classical phase diagram. Furthermore, the Weiss temperature independently estimated from a bulk magnetic susceptibility is consistent with the microscopic parameters. The results reveal that a competition between the NN and NNN interactions that together with a relatively large single ion magnetic anisotropy stabilize the stripe magnetic structure.

The compound consists of two interpenetrating sublattices of Cu, labeled as Cu$_{\rm A}$ and Cu$_{\rm B}$, each of which forms a square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The two sublattices order at different temperatures and effective exchange couplings within the sublattices differ by an order of magnitude. This yields an inelastic neutron spectrum of the Cu$_{\rm A}$ sublattice extending up to 300 meV and a much weaker dispersion of Cu$_{\rm B}$ going up to around 20 meV. Using a single-band Hubbard model we derive an effective spin Hamiltonian. From this, we find that linear spin-wave theory gives a good description to the magnetic spectrum. In addition, a magnetic field of 10 T is found to produce effects on the Cu$_{\rm B}$ dispersion that cannot be explained by conventional spin-wave theory.

We study low energy excitations in the quantum breathing pyrochlore antiferromagnet Ba$_3$Yb$_2$Zn$_5$O$_{11}$ by combination of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and thermodynamical properties measurements. The INS spectra are quantitatively explained by spin-1/2 single-tetrahedron model having $XXZ$ anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. This model has a two-fold degeneracy of the lowest-energy state per tetrahedron and well reproduces the magnetization curve at 0.5 K and heat capacity above 1.5 K. At lower temperatures, however, we observe a broad maximum in the heat capacity around 63 mK, demonstrating that a unique quantum ground state is selected due to extra perturbations with energy scale smaller than the instrumental resolution of INS.

We performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of NdFe$_{3}$($^{11}$BO$_{3}$)$_{4}$ to explore the magnetic excitations, to establish the underlying Hamiltonian, and to reveal the detailed nature of hybridization between the 4$f$ and 3$d$ magnetism. The observed spectra exhibiting a couple of key features, i.e., anti-crossing of Nd- and Fe-excitations and anisotropy gap at the antiferromagnetic zone center, are explained by the magnetic model including spin interaction in the framework of weakly-coupled Fe$^{3+}$ chains, interaction between the Fe$^{3+}$ and Nd$^{3+}$ moments, and single-ion anisotropy derived from Nd$^{3+}$ crystal field. The combination of the measurements and calculations reveals that the hybridization between 4$f$ and 3$d$ magnetism propagates the local magnetic anisotropy of the Nd$^{3+}$ ion to the Fe$^{3+}$ network, resulting in the bulk structure of multiferroics.

It is found that the magnetic excitations of Cu-CHDs adsorbing low- and high-concentration O2 molecules are explained by different spin models, the former by spin dimers and the latter by spin trimers. By using the obtained parameters and also by assuming that the levels of the higher energy states are reduced because of the non-negligible spin dependence of the molecular potential of oxygen, the magnetization curves are explained in quantitative level.

We investigate, angle dependent, the magnetoresistance (MR) of individual self-assembled ferromagnetic GaAs/(Ga,Mn)As core-shell nanowires at cryogenic temperatures. The shape of the MR traces and the observed strong anisotropies in transport can be ascribed to the interplay of the negative magnetoresistance effect and a strong uniaxial anisotropy with the magnetic easy direction pointing along the wire axis. The magnetoresistance can be well described by a quantitative analysis based on the concept of the effective magnetic field, usually used to describe ferromagnetic resonance phenomena. The nanowires we investigate exhibit a uniaxial anisotropy which is approximately 5 times larger than the strain induced anisotropy observed in lithographically prepared (Ga,Mn)As stripes.

The temperature variations in the sizes of the magnetic domains and PNRs estimated by our neutron diffraction measurements support this picture. Since the same domain provides both electric and magnetic properties, strong coupling between the two properties through the domain size is expected.

Measurements of polarized neutron scattering were performed on a $S=1/2$ chain multiferroic LiCu$_2$O$_2$. In the ferroelectric ground state with the spontaneous polarization along the c-axis, the existence of transverse spiral spin component in the $bc$-plane was confirmed. When the direction of electric polarization is reversed, the vector spin chirality as defined by ${\bf C}_{ij} = {\bf S}_i \times {\bf S}_j$ ($i$ and $j$ being the neighboring spin sites) is observed to be reversed, indicating that the spin-current model or the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya mechanism is applicable even to this $e_{\mathrm{g}}$-electron quantum-spin system. Differential scattering intensity of polarized neutrons shows a large discrepancy from that expected for the classical-spin $bc$-cycloidal structure, implying the effect of large quantum fluctuation.

Multiferroic CuFe1-xAlxO2 (x=0.02) exhibits a ferroelectric ordering accompanied by a proper helical magnetic ordering below T=7K under zero magnetic field. By polarized neutron diffraction and pyroelectric measurements, we have revealed a one-to-one correspondence between the spin helicity and the direction of the spontaneous electric polarization. This result indicates that the spin helicity of the proper helical magnetic ordering is essential for the ferroelectricity in CuFe1-xAlxO2. The induction of the electric polarization by the proper helical magnetic ordering is, however, cannot be explained by the Katsura-Nagaosa-Balatsky model, which successfully explains the ferroelectricity in the recently explored ferroelectric helimagnets, such as TbMnO3. We thus conclude that CuFe1-xAlxO2 is a new class of magnetic ferroelectrics.

For the spin-3/2 kagome staircase system Co3V2O8, magnetic field (H)-temperature (T) phase diagrams have been constructed for the fields along three principal directions up to 5 T, using results of various macroscopic measurements on single crystal samples and also using neutron diffraction data taken on both powder and single crystal samples under H along c. In zero magnetic field, the system exhibits three transitions at temperatures Tc1~11.2 K, Tc2~8.8 K and Tc3~ (6.0-7.0) K. The single crystal data present clear evidence for the noncollinear nature of the magnetic structures in all magnetically ordered phases below Tc1. The sinusoidal nature of the incommensurate modulation of the ordered moment reported in the former work has been confirmed between Tc1 and Tc2, that is, no higher harmonics of the modulation have been detected even for the present large single crystal. Even in the phase of commensurate modulation between Tc2 and Tc3, we have not detected any higher harmonics of the modulation. The phase diagrams show that the magnetically ordered phases sensitively change to other phases with H, indicating that the geometrical frustration inherent in this system is important for the determination of the phase diagram. No evidence for ferroelectric transitions has been observed in the measurements of the dielectric constant applying the electric fields along three crystallographic axes, a, b and c. Only small dielectric anomalies closely connected with the magnetic phase transitions have been found.

To investigate the Hall resistivity rH of systems with non-trivial spin structures, transport and magnetic properties of the oxygen deficient perovskite system TbBaCo2O5.53 with non-trivial magnetic structures have been adopted. As has been already known, the system exhibits, with decreasing temperature T, a transition to a ferromagnetic (FM) phase with non-collinear magnetic structure at TC 280 K in zero magnetic field and with further decreasing T, the spontaneous magnetization begins to decrease at T1~260 K and becomes zero at TN 245 K, where an antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase with non-collinear magnetic structure is realized. The metamagnetic behavior is induced by the relatively small magnetic field H (< 5 T) in the T region between ~200 K and T1. In this T region, unusual H dependence of rH has been observed. By analyzing the observed rH and magnetization M, the H dependence of the anomalous Hall coefficients Rs has been obtained at various fixed temperatures. Based on the magnetic structure reported previously by our group, the possible relevance of the non-trivial magnetic structure to the observed unusual behavior of rH is pointed out.

Neutron scattering studies have been carried out under the magnetic fields H//[0_11] and H//[001] on a single crystal of Nd2Mo2O7, whose Hall resistivity(rhoH) exhibits quite unusual H- and temperature(T)-dependences. Material parameters such as the single ion anisotropies of the Mo- and Nd- moments and exchange coupling constants among the Mo-Mo, Mo-Nd and Nd-Nd moments, have been determined to reproduce various kinds of experimental data taken as a function of H and T. For example, the neutron Bragg intensities, magnetization curves and the magnetic specific heats have been reproduced by the common parameters. By using the magnetic structure reproduced by these parameters, the spin chirality (chi) of Mo spins or the fictitious magnetic flux Phi proportional to chi has been calculated as a function of H and T by using equation chi=<S1.S2x S3>, where the bracket means the statistical average. (Note that we do not use the equation chi=<S1><S2>x<S3>, because the local nature of the chirality should be correctly considered.) Comparing the calculated results with the observed rhoH, we can conclude that the unusual behavior of rH cannot be understood consistently only by the chirality mechanism.

Significant scattering has been observed for phonons originating from the vibrations of the short-range ordered D2O molecules. No firm evidence for the magnetic fluctuations has been found for the NaxCoO2.yD2O, while the very weak intensity modulation observed in the j scans along (1/2, 1/2, j) suggests the existence of the antiferromagnetic fluctuations in the non-deuterated parts of the sample, the volume fraction of which is estimated to be about 26 %. The present results indicate that magnetic fluctuations, especially ferromagnetic ones are rather weak, in the deuterated system, which is consistent with the results of the NMR Knight shift reported by the present authors' group. We discuss the short-range ordered state of D2O, too by analyzing the observed diffuse scattering.

Neutron diffraction studies have been carried out in the temperature(T) range between 10 K and 130 K on a single crystal of YBaCo4O7, which has the stacking of kagome and triangular lattices of CoO4 tetrahedra along the c-axis. Structural transitions have been found at two temperatures Tc1~70 K and Tc2~105 K. With decreasing T, magnetic order appears along with the transition at Tc2, but it does not grow to an ideal long-range order even at the lowest T studied (~10 K). Two groups of magnetic diffuse reflections, which originate from the Co-moments of the kagome and triangular lattices, are observed separately in the reciprocal space. With further decreasing T, the growth rates of the intensities of these two are enhanced by another transition at Tc1. These magnetic behaviors seem to be related to the release of the geometrical frustration. At 10 K, the patterns of the magnetic short-range order have been determined for both sites of the kagome and triangular lattices.

Co-oxides beta-Na0.5CoO2 and gamma-K0.5CoO2 have been prepared by the Na de-intercalation from alpha-NaCoO2 and by the floating-zone method, respectively. It has been found that successive phase transitions take place at temperatures Tc1 and Tc2 in both systems. The appearance of the internal magnetic field at Tc1 with decreasing temperature T indicates that the antiferromagnetic order exists at T < Tc1, as in gamma-Na0.5CoO2. For beta-Na0.5CoO2, the transition temperatures and the NMR parameters determined from the data taken for magnetically ordered state are similar to those of gamma-Na0.5CoO2, indicating that the difference of the stacking ways of the CoO2 layers between these systems do not significantly affect their physical properties. For gamma-K0.5CoO2, the quantitative difference of the physical quantities are found from those of beta- and gamma-Na0.5CoO2. The difference between the values of Tci (i = 1 and 2) of these systems might be explained by considering the distance between CoO2 layers.

Data taken by various kinds of methods including NMR/NQR and neutron scattering are presented for NaxCoO2, in particular, for Na0.5CoO2. Attentions have also been paid to the x dependence of the electronic nature. The pseudo-gap-like behavior observed in the region of x<xc~0.6 is emphasized. For samples with x<0.6, signals from two kinds of Co sites with different quadrupole frequencies nQ, ~4.1 MHz and ~2.8 MHz were observed, and the former value of nQ, which is nearly equal to that of the superconducting system Na0.3CoO2.yH2O, becomes dominant with decreasing x to 0.3. For Na0.5CoO2, the Co sites with the larger nQ value have the larger magnetic moments. They align antiferromagnetically at Tc1~87 K with their direction within the plane, while the Co sites with the smaller nQ value have the smaller moments. They align along the direction parallel to the c axis. The ordered moments at the two distinct sites exhibit the same T dependences, indicating that the existence of these sites is not due to a macroscopic phase separation. Although we have observed the splitting of the zero-field NMR signals from the Co sites with the smaller nQ value at the second transition temperature Tc2~53 K, any other anomaly of the ordered magnetization has not been observed there in the T dependences of the neutron and the NMR data. As x decreases, the two-dimensional nature of the electrons is enhanced and the antiferromagnetic correlation increases. Based on these results, the superconducting pair state in Na0.3CoO2.yH2O is discussed.

In the model, the dynamical spin susceptibility is calculated by the expression c(q,w)= c0(q,w)/{1+J(q)c0(q,w)}, where c0(q,w) is obtained by adopting the effective energy dispersion of the quasi particles which can reproduce the shapes of the Fermi surface, and J(q) is the exchange coupling between the Cu-Cu electrons. It is important to consider the experimentally observed quasi particle broadening (G) to reproduce the observed spectra of YBa2Cu3Oy, while to reproduce the data of La2-xSrxCuO4 and La2-y-xNdySrxCuO4, very small G values have to be used, even in the phases without the static "stripe" order. This may be caused by the existence of the "stripe" correlations or "stripe" fluctuations.

The magnetizations M measured under the conditions of the zero-field-cooling(ZFC) and the field-cooling(FC) have different values below the temperature T=TG. The anomalous T-dependence of the electrical resistivities r and the thermoelectric powers S observed at around TG indicates that the behavior of the magnetization is due to the transition to the state with the spin freezing. In this spin-frozen state, the Hall resistivities rH measured with the ZFC and FC conditions are found to have different values, too, in the low temperature phase (T<TG). Possible mechanisms which induce such the hysteretic behavior are discussed.

With increasing the Sr- or Ba-concentration x, the system becomes metallic ferromagnet with rather large magnetic moments. For R=Pr and Nd and A=Ca, the system approaches the metal- insulator phase boundary but does not become metallic. The magnetic moments of the Ca-doped systems measured with the magnetic field H=0.1 T are much smaller than those of the Ba- and Sr-doped systems. The thermoelectric powers of the Ba- and Sr-doped systems decrease from large positive values of lightly doped samples to negative ones with increasing do** level, while those of Ca-doped systems remain positive. These results can be understood by considering the relationship between the average ionic radius of R1-xAx and the energy difference between the low spin and intermediate spin states. We have found the resistivity-anomaly in the measurements of Pr1-xCaxCoO3 under pressure in the wide region of x, which indicates the existence of a phase transition different from the one reported in the very restricted region of x~0.5 at ambient pressure [Tsubouchi et al. Phys. Rev. B 66 (2002) 052418.]. No indication of this kind of transition has been observed in other species of R.

The incommensurability d of the peak of c"(q,w) found by the q-scans and the peak width Dq exhibit characteristic T-dependences. Observed profiles show clear incommensurate structure even at rather high temperatures. The results indicate that effects of the slowly fluctuating "stripes" exist not only in the low temperature tetragonal (LTT) phase but also in the orthorhombic phase(LTO1) of the present system. The persistence of the local structural characteristics of the low-T phase seems to be important.
