We investigate a nonlinear response of the physical vacuum by the example of the third harmonic in radiation of the electron-positron-photon plasma excited by a strong time dependent electric field at the focus spot of counterpropagating laser pulses. The investigation was developed within the framework of the Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon kinetic theory nonperturbatively describing vacuum creation of the quasiparticle electron-positron plasma (EPP) and different channels of its interaction with the photon subsystem in the single-photon approximation that are opened in the presence of a strong semiclassical field. We investigate the radiation of EPP in the annihilation channel on the basis of the well known approximations and compare the obtained result with the semiclassical radiation of the plasma oscillations. In the high-frequency range for large adiabaticity parameter the quantum radiation dominates in comparison with the semiclassical one.

The effective mass approximation is analysed in a nonperturbative kinetic theory approach to strong field excitations in graphene [1,2]. This problem is highly actual for the investigation of quantum radiation from graphene [3], where the collision integrals in the photon kinetic equation are rather complicated functionals of the distribution functions of the charge carriers. These functions are needed in the explicit analytical definition as solutions of the kinetic equations for the electron-hole excitations. In the present work it is shown that the suggested approach is rather effective in a certain range of parameters for the pulse of an external electromagnetic field. For example, the applicability condition of the approximation in the case of a harmonic field is $\hbar ω^2 / (\sqrt{2} e E_0 v_F) < 1$, were $v_F$ is the Fermi velocity. In the standard massive quantum electrodynamics the usability of the analogical approximation is very narrow.

The properties of the forced oscillations of electron-positron plasma (EPP) generated from vacuum under the action of a short laser pulse are considered. Calculating the density of the conduction and polarization currents within the quantum kinetic approach, we demonstrate the presence of plasma oscillations at the frequency of the external field and its odd harmonics. It is expected that radiation generated by these plasma oscillations can be observed outside the interaction region, for example, outside the focal spot of two counterpropagating laser beams, and can serve as an indicator of the Schwinger mechanism of the EPP creation from vacuum.

A number of physical processes occurring in a flat one-dimensional graphene structure under the action of strong time-dependent electric fields are considered. It is assumed that the Dirac model can be applied to the graphene as a subsystem of the general system under consideration, which includes an interaction with quantized electromagnetic field. The Dirac model itself in the external electromagnetic field (in particular, the behavior of charged carriers) is treated nonperturbatively with respect to this field within the framework of strong-field QED with unstable vacuum. This treatment is combined with a kinetic description of the radiation of photons from the electron-hole plasma created from the vacuum under the action of the electric field. An interaction with quantized electromagnetic field is described perturbatively. A significant development of the kinetic equation formalism is presented. A number of specific results are derived in course of analytical and numerical study of the equations. We believe that some of predicted effects and properties of considered processes may be verified experimentally. Among these effects, it should be noted a characteristic spectral composition anisotropy of the quantum radiation and a possible presence of even harmonics of the external field in the latter radiation.

As examples the constant electric field as well as an electric field of short high-frequency pulses are considered. The dependence of the induced conduction and polarization currents characteristics on the pulse intensity, pulse duration, and polarization is investigated. The characteristics of secondary electromagnetic radiation resulting from the alternating currents is investigated. The nonlinear response to the external electric field characterizes graphene as an active medium. Qualitative agreement is obtained with the existing experimental result of measurements of currents in constant electric fields and radiation from graphene in the case of excitation by means of the infrared and optical pulses.

We present a detailed analysis of the self-consistent system of kinetic equations (KEs) describing electron-positron pair production from vacuum under the action of a spatially homogeneous time-dependent electric field of arbitrary polarization. The physical significance of all the basic functions of the kinetic theory is ascertained. It is demonstrated that the total system of the KEs consists of two coupled quasiparticle and spin subsystems with their integrals of motion. A projection method is proposed in order to obtain the KE system in two particular cases: linearly polarized external electric field and (2+1)-dimensional description of quasiparticles in graphene. We also address the energy conservation law taking into account the internal plasma field and describe an alternative rigorous derivation of the KE system.

We present a self-consistent kinetic description of an electron-positron-photon ($e^-e^+γ$) plasma generated from vacuum in a focal spot of counterpropagating laser pulses. We rely on a model of purely time-dependent external electric field, but properly take into account quantum radiation from plasma, as well as the semiclassical internal (plasma) field. To achieve this goal we derive a system of coupled kinetic equations for the electron, positron, and photon plasma species supplemented with Maxwell equation for the internal electric field. Quantum radiation is included systematically by taking into account the pair creation/annihilation and radiation channels of the BBGKY chain in quasiparticle representation, which we truncate at second order of perturbation theory. An important application of our results would be consistent consideration of photon emission and cascade production beyond the locally constant field approximation, including the depletion of the driving laser field and a possible scenario of cascade saturation due to thermalization.

The formalism of the nonperturbative description of transport phenomena in graphene on the framework of the quantum kinetic equation for the Schwinger-like process is compared with the description on the basis of Zener-Klein tunneling. The regime of ballistic conductivity in a constant electric field is considered.
In the latter case the interaction of carriers with electric field is described in terms of the spatial dependence of their potential energy (x-representation). The presented kinetic formalism uses an alternative method of describing the interaction with a field through the introduction of a quasimomentum $P=p-(e/c)A(t)$ where $A(t)$ is the vector potential (t-representation). Both approaches should lead to the same physical characteristics of the described process.
The measurement of the current in experiments is realized in static conditions determined by the potential difference between the electrodes and the distance between them. These parameters are native for the x-representation. On the contrary, in the approach based on the t-representation it is necessary to consider the situation in dynamics and introduce the effective lifetime of the generated carriers. In the ballistic regime this time depends on the distance between the electrodes.
We give a detailed comparison of these two descriptions of the current and demonstrate good coincidence with the experimental data of the alternative approach based on the t-representation. It provides a reliable foundation for the application of nonperturbative methods adopted from strong field QED, that allows to include in the consideration more general models of the field (arbitrary polarization and time dependence) and to extend the scope of the theory.

We first give a derivation of the kinetic equation with the source term for the case of fermions starting from the Dirac equation and for bosons from the Klein-Gordon equation. In a second part we discuss the application of the approach to the situation of external field pulses as single-sheeted functions of time (like the Sauter-pulse) and as multi- sheeted functions approximating the situation in the focal point of counter-propagating laser beams. Special emphasis is on the discussion of the time evolution of the system that exhibits the characteristics of a field-induced phase transition for which we discuss the behaviour of the entropy and particle density of the system. We give an outlook to applications of the approach in describing particle production in strong fields formed in particle and nuclear collisions.

In the present contribution the features of the this process will be considered in the few photon domain where $ω\sim m$. We observe a narrowing of the transient domain of the fast oscillations and, mainly, a considerable growth of the effectiveness of the EPP production. Under these circumstances, we see an increase of the effectiveness of the EPP creation in the particular case of a bifrequent excitation, where both mechanisms (tunneling and few photon) act simultaneously [2,3].

The features of vacuum particle creation in an external classical field are studied for simplest external field models in $3 + 1$ dimensional QED. The investigation is based on a kinetic equation that is a nonperturbative consequence of the fundamental equations of motion of QED. The observed features of the evolution of the system apply on the qualitative level also for systems of other nature and therefore are rather general. Examples from cosmology and condensed matter physics illustrate this statement. The common basis for the description of these systems are kinetic equations for vacuum particle creation belonging to the class of integro-differential equations of non-Markovian type with fastly oscillating kernel. This allows to characterize processes of this type as belonging to the class of field induced phase transitions.

We provide numerical examples of the differential cross section for parameters related to the European XFEL. Analogously, the Schwinger type pair production in pulsed fields with oscillating components referring to a superposition of optical laser and XFEL frequencies is evaluated. The residual phase space distribution of created pairs is sensitive to the pulse shape and may differ significantly from transiently achieved mode occupations.

We investigate the question to what extent the low-momentum pion enhancement observed in heavy-ion collisions at CERN - LHC can be addressed within this formalism. In a first step, we consider the inertial mechanism for nonequilibrium production of $σ-$mesons and their simultaneous decay into pion pairs for two cases of $σ$ mass evolution. The resulting pion distribution shows a strong low-momentum enhancement which can be approximated by a thermal Bose distribution with a chemical potential that appears as a trace of the nonequilibrium process of its production.

We find a strong enhancement by orders of magnitude caused by a weak field with a frequency being a multitude of the strong-field frequency. The strong low-frequency field leads to shell structures which are lifted by the weaker high-frequency field. The resonance type amplification refers to a new, monotonously increasing mode, often hidden in some strong oscillatory transient background which disappears during the smoothly switching off the background fields, thus leaving a pronounced residual shell structure in phase space.

Solutions of a kinetic equation are investigated which describe, on a nonperturbative basis, the vacuum creation of quasiparticle electron-positron pairs due to a strong laser field. The dependence of the quasiparticle electron (positron) distribution function and the particle number density is explored in a wide range of the laser radiation parameters, i.e., the wavelength λand amplitude of electric field strength E_0. Three domains are found: the domain of vacuum polarization effects where the density of the e-e+ pairs is small (the "calm valley"), and two accumulation domains in which the production rate of the e-e+ pairs is strongly increased and the e-e+ pair density can reach a significant value (the short wave length domain and the strong field one). In particular, the obtained results point to a complicated short-distance electromagnetic structure of the physical vacuum in the domain of short wavelengths λ\lessim λ_{acc} = π/m. For moderately strong fields E_0 \lesssim E_c=m^2/e, the accumulation regime can be realized where a plasma with a high density of e-e+ quasiparticles can be achieved. In this domain of the field strengths and in the whole investigated range of wavelengths, an observation of the dynamical Schwinger effect can be facilitated.

In the present work a closed system of kinetic equations is obtained from the truncation of the BBGKY hierarchy for the description of the vacuum creation of an electron - positron plasma and secondary photons due to a strong laser field. This truncation is performed in the Markovian approximation for the one-photon annihilation channel which is accessible due to the presence of the strong external field. Estimates of the photon production rate are obtained for different domains of laser field parameters (frequency nu and field strength E). A huge quantity of optical photons of the quasiclassical laser field is necessary to satisfy the conservation laws of energy and momentum of the constituents (e-, e+, gamma) in this channel. Since the number of these optical photons corresponds to the order of perturbation theory, a vanishingly small photon production rate results for the optical region and strongly subcritical fields E << E_c. In the gamma-ray region nu <~ m the required number of laser photons is small and the production rate of photons from the one-photon annihilation process becomes accessible to observations for subcritical fields E <~ E_c. In the infrared region the photon distribution has a 1/k spectrum typical for flicker noise.

It is well known that in the presence of strong external electromagnetic fields many processes forbidden in standard QED become possible. One example is the one-photon annihilation process considered recently by the present authors in the framework of a kinetic approach to the quasiparticle e-e+ gamma plasma created from vacuum in the focal spot of two counter-propagating laser beams. In these works the domain of large values of the adiabaticity parameter gamma >> 1 (corresponding to multiphoton processes) was considered. In the present work we estimate the intensity of the radiation stemming from photon annihilation in the framework of the effective mass model where gamma < 1, corresponding to large electric fields E < E_c=m^2/e and high laser field frequencies (the domain characteristic for X-ray lasers of the next generation). Under such limiting conditions the resulting effect is sufficiently large to be accessible to experimental observation.

We investigate the domain of large adiabaticity parameters gamma >> 1 where the photon radiation turns out to be very small. A more thorough examination of the domain gamma < 1 needs separate investigation. We consider an alternative mechanism for the production of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. It is basically due to vacuum pair creation (VPC) of vector bosons (W and Z) as a consequence of a rapid W and Z mass generation during the electroweak phase transition in the early Universe. The mechanism is as follows: after their pair crreation, the vector bosons may either annihilate directly into photons or decay into leptons and quarks which subsequently annihilate as lepton-antilepton and quark-antiquark pairs into photons. Preliminary estimates show that the number of CMB photons obtained this way can be sufficient to explain the presently observed CMB photon density. In this contribution we present an exactly soluble model for vacuum pair creation kinetics.

A kinetic theory of vacuum particle creation under the action of an inertial mechanism is constructed within a nonpertrubative dynamical approach. At the semi-phenomenological level, the inertial mechanism corresponds to quantum field theory with a time-dependent mass. At the microscopic level, such a dependence may be caused by different reasons: The non-stationary Higgs mechanism, the influence of a mean field or condensate, the presence of the conformal multiplier in the scalar-tensor gravitation theory etc. In what follows, a kinetic theory in the collisionless approximation is developed for scalar, spinor and massive vector fields in the framework of the oscillator representation, which is an effective tool for transition to the quasiparticle description and for derivation of non-Markovian kinetic equations. Properties of these equations and relevant observables (particle number and energy densities, pressure) are studied. The developed theory is applied here to describe the vacuum matter creation in conformal cosmological models and discuss the problem of the observed number density of photons in the cosmic microwave background radiation. As other example, the self-consistent evolution of scalar fields with non-monotonic self-interaction potentials (the W-potential and Witten - Di Vecchia - Veneziano model) is considered. In particular, conditions for appearance of tachyonic modes and a problem of the relevant definition of a vacuum state are considered.

Electron-positron pair creation in a standing wave is explored using a parameter-free quantum kinetic equation. Field strengths and frequencies corresponding to modern optical lasers induce a material polarisation of the QED vacuum, which may be characterised as a plasma of e^+ e^- quasiparticle pairs with a density of ~10^{20}cm^{-3}. The plasma vanishes almost completely when the laser field is zero, leaving a very small residual pair density, n_r, which is the true manifestation of vacuum decay. The average pair density per period is proportional to the laser intensity but independent of the frequency, ν. The density of residual pairs also grows with laser intensity but n_r \propto ν^2. With optical lasers at the forefront of the current generation, these dynamical QED vacuum effects may generate 5-10 observable two-photon annihilation events per laser pulse.

In the simple model of a massive vector field in flat space-time, we derive a kinetic equation of non-Markovian type, describing the vacuum pair creation under the action of external fields of different nature. We use for this aim the non-perturbative methods of kinetic theory in combination with a new element when the transition of the instantaneous quasiparticle representation is realized within the oscillator (holomorphic) representation. We study in detail the process of vacuum creation of vector bosons generated by a time-dependent boson mass in accordance with a conformal-invariant scalar-tensor gravitational theory and its cosmological application. It is indicated that the choice of the equation of state (EoS) of the Universe allows to obtain a number density of the vector bosons that is sufficient to explain the observed number density of photons in the cosmic microwave background radiation. It is shown that the vector boson gas created from the vacuum is in a strong non-equilibrium state and corresponds to a cold dust-like EoS.

The possibility to observe vacuum electron-positron pair creation due to a powerful optical laser pulse is discussed. We employ a quantum kinetic formulation of the problem with a source term describing the vacuum pair production in a homogeneous electric field with arbitrary time dependence (dynamical Schwinger mechanism). For a periodic field weak in comparison with the critical value E_{cr}=m^2/|e|, the electron-positron plasma density changes approximately periodically with twice the field frequency. Under these conditions, the mean value $<n>$ for the density per period in the volume lambda^3 is a more appropriate characteristic quantity than the residual density n_r which is taken over an integer number of field periods and calculated using the imaginary time method. The value <n> is proportional to the squared field intensity and does not depend on the frequency. We show that in terms of the parameter <n> an optical laser can be more effective than a X-ray one. We expect that it is possible to observe the vacuum creation effect not only by means of the planned X-ray free electron lasers but already at present-day optical lasers.

To describe the pre-equilibrium evolution of the system the transport kinetic equation is employed. It is shown that the dynamics of production process at times comparable with particle inverse masses can deviate considerably from that based on classical Schwinger-like estimates for homogeneous and constant fields. One of the effects caused by non-stationary chromoelectric fields is the enhancement of the yield of $s\bar{s}$ quark pairs. Dependence of this effect on the shape and duration of the field pulse is studied together with the influence of string fusion and reduction of quark masses.

The description of quantum field systems with meta-stable vacuum is motivated by studies of many physical problems (the decay of disoriented chiral condensate, the resonant decay of CP-odd meta-stable states, self-consistent model of QGP pre-equilibrium evolution, the phase transition problem in the systems with broken symmetry etc). A non-perturbative approach based on the kinetic description within the framework of the quasi-particle representation was proposed here. We restrict ourselves to scalar field theory with potentials of polynomial type. The back reaction mechanism, i.e. the particle production influence on background field is also discussed. Using the oscillator representation, we derive the generalized kinetic equation with non-pertrubative source term for description of particle-antiparticle creation under action of background field and equation of motion for it. As an illustrative example we consider one-component scalar theory with double-well potential. On this example, we study some features of proposed approach, in particular, the selection problem of stable vacuum state, what allows to avoid appearance of tachyonic regimes. The similar analysis is possible for some other models of such kind: the Friedberg-Lee model, the non-linear of $η$ -- meson model of Witten--Di Vecchia--Veneziano, end so on.

The model includes the Schwinger-like mechanism for particle creation in a strong field as well as two-particle elastic collisions between all mixture components in the Landau approximation of small-angle scattering. The process of equilibration at the initial energy density exhibits a dominant quark creation in the very early time of interaction. It is shown that dam** of energy density oscillations due to elastic scattering of perturbative quarks and gluons is not strong enough to reach thermodynamic equilibrium in a reasonable relaxation time. Decomposing the scalar field into a mean-field part and fluctuations we obtain spontaneous pair creation driven by a self-interacting strong background field. The produced fermion and boson pairs are self-consistently coupled. Consequently back reactions arise from fermion and boson currents determining the time dependent self-interacting background mean-field. We explore the numerical solution in flux tube geometry for the time evolution of the mean-field as well as for the number- and energy densities for fermions and bosons. We find that after a characteristic time all energy is converted from the background mean-field to particle creation. Applying this general approach to the production of ``quarks'' and ``gluons'' a typical time scale for the collapse of the flux tube is 1.5 fm/c.

A particular feature of this approach is the appearance of plasma oscillations in all thermodynamic observables. Their presence can lead to a sharp increase in the time-integrated dilepton yield.

A generalized quantum kinetic equation (RKE) of the Kadanoff-Baym type is obtained on the basis of the Heisenberg equations of motion where the time evolution and space translation are separated from each other by means of the covariant method. The same approach is used also for a covariant modification of the real-time Green's functions method based on the Wigner representation. The suggested approach does not contain arbitrariness' elements and uncertainties which often arise from derivation of RKE on the basis of the motion equations of the Kadanoff-Baym type for the correlation functions in the case of systems with inner degrees of freedom. Possibilities of the proposed method are demonstrated by examples of derivation of RKE of the Vlasov type and collision integrals of the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) type in the frame of the $σω$ -version of quantum hadrodynamics, for the simplest case of spin saturated nuclear matter without antinuclear component. Here, the quasiparticle approximation in a covariant performance is used. A generalization of the method for the description of strong non-equilibrium states based on the non-equilibrium statistical operator is then proposed as well.

We investigate the quantum Vlasov equation with a source term describing the spontaneous particle creation in strong fields. The back-reaction problem is treated by solving this kinetic equation together with the Maxwell equation which determines the induced time-dependent electric field in the system. The evolution of distribution functions for bosons and fermions is studied numerically. We found that the system shows a regular dynamic behavior if the back-reaction is neglected. But if the back-reaction is included, it is not the case and some stochastic features are clearly revealed in the non-equilibrium distribution function..

We solve the quantum Vlasov equation for fermions and bosons, incorporating spontaneous pair creation in the presence of back-reactions and collisions. Pair creation is initiated by an external impulse field and the source term is non-Markovian. A simultaneous solution of Maxwell's equation in the presence of feedback yields an internal current and electric field that exhibit plasma oscillations with a period tau_pl. Allowing for collisions, these oscillations are damped on a time-scale, tau_r, determined by the collision frequency. Plasma oscillations cannot affect the early stages of the formation of a quark-gluon plasma unless tau_r >> tau_pl and tau_pl approx. 1/Lambda_QCD approx 1 fm/c.

We analyze a quantum kinetic equation describing both boson and fermion pair production and explore analytically and numerically the solution of the non-Markovian kinetic equation. In the Markovian limit of the kinetic equation we find an analytical solution for the single particle distribution function of bosons and fermions. The numerical investigation for a homogeneous, constant electric field shows an enhancement (bosons) or a suppression (fermions) of the pair creation rate according to the symmetry character of the produced particles. For strong fields non-Markovian effects are important while they disappear for weak fields. Hence it is sufficient to apply the low density limit for weak fields but necessary to take into account memory effects for strong fields.
