Thin films of La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y~0.4) have been grown on single crystal SrTiO3 (001) by RF sputtering. The structural and surface characterizations confirm the epitaxial nature of these film. However, the difference between the rocking curve of the (002) and (110) peaks and the presence of pits/holes in the step-terrace type surface morphology suggests high density of defect in these films. Pronounced hysteresis between the field cool cooled (FCC) and field cooled warming (FCW) magnetization measurements suggest towards the non-ergodic magnetic state. The origin of this nonergodicity could be traced to the magnetic liquid like state arising from the delicacy of the coexisting magnetic phases, viz., ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic-charge ordered (FM/AFM-CO). The large difference between the insulator metal transitions during cooling and warming cycles (TIMC~64 K and TIMW~123 K) could be regarded as a manifestation of the nonergodicity leading to supercooling of the magnetic liquid while cooling. The nonergodicity and supercooling are weakened by the AFM-FM phase transition induced by an external magnetic field. TIM and small polaron activation energy corresponding the magnetic liquid state (cooling cycle) vary nonlinearly with the applied magnetic field but become linear in the crystalline solid state (warming cycle). The analysis of the low temperature resistivity data shows that electron-phonon interaction is drastically reduced by the applied magnetic field. The resistivity minimum in the lower temperature region of the self-field warming curve has been explained in terms of the Kondo like scattering in the magnetically inhomogeneous regime.

The origin of the resistivity minimum observed in strongly phase separated manganites has been investigated in single crystalline thin films of LPCMO (x~0.42, y~0.40). The antiferromagnetic/charge ordered insulator (AFM/COI)-ferromagnetic metal (FMM) phase transition, coupled with the colossal hysteresis between the field cool cooled and field cooled warming magnetization demonstrates strongly phase separated nature, which gives rise to non-equilibrium magnetic liquid state that freezes into a magnetic glass. The thermal cycling and magnetic field dependence of the resistivity unambiguously shows that the pronounced resistivity minimum observed during warming is a consequence non-equilibrium states resulting from the magnetic frustration created by the delicate coexistence of the FMM and AFM/COI phases. The non-equilibrium states and hence the resistivity minimum is extremely sensitive to the relative fraction of the coexisting phases and can be tuned by intrinsic and extrinsic perturbations like the defect density, thermal cycling and magnetic field.

Magnetic and magnetotransport properties of oriented polycrystalline Pr0.58Ca0.42MnO3 thin films prepared in flowing oxygen and air ambient has been investigated. The magnetic ground state of both the films is a frozen cluster glass. In the air annealed film charge order (CO) is quenched and ferromagnetic (FM) transition, which appears at TC=148 K is followed by antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at TN=104 K. This film shows self-field hysteretic insulator-metal transition (IMT) at TIMC=89 K and TIMW=148 K in the cooling and warming cycle, respectively. Application of magnetic field (H) gradually enhances TIMC and TIMW, reduces the thermoresistive hysteresis and TIM diminishes. In contrast, the film annealed in flowing oxygen shows a CO transition, which is followed by FM and AFM transitions. This film shows appreciably smaller magnetic moment and does not show IMT upto H=20 kOe. As H is increased to H=30 kOe, IMT having strong thermoresistive hysteresis and sharp resistivity jumps appears in the cooling and warming cycles. As H increases to higher values the thermoresistive hysteresis is reduced, resistivity jumps are observed to disappear and TIM decreases. In the lower temperature regime the resistivity first decreases slowly with H and then shows sharp drop. The virgin cycle is not recoverable in subsequent cycles. The decrement far more pronounced in the oxygen annealed film and occurs at much higher H suggesting that the frozen cluster glass state is more robust in this film. The microstructural analysis of the two set of films shows CO quenching, FM transition and self-field IMT in air annealed film is caused by higher density of microstructural disorder and lattice defects. The difference in growth ambience of the two films could give rise to such microstructural perturbations.

The magnetic and magnetotransport properties of single crystalline La1-x-yPryCaxMnO3 (x=0.42, y=0.40) thin films (~140 nm) deposited on (110) oriented LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 substrates exhibit a crossover from the high temperature antiferromagnetic-charge ordered insulator (AFM-COI) phase (T>TN) to strain glass (T<Tg). At intermediate temperatures (Tg<T<TN) dynamical liquid having prominent thermal-magneto-resistive hysteresis dominates in the cooling cycle, while in the warming cycle it is preceded by ferromagnetic metal (FMM) phase. Magnetic field required to drive AFM-COI to FMM phase transition are higher than that for the strain glass. The magneto-electric nature and temperature span of the distinct magnetic regimes are sensitive to the thermal cycling and substrate induced strain.

The film on LAO is under compressive strain while LSAT and STO are under tensile strain. The presence of a metamagnetic state akin to cluster glass formed due to coexisting FM and antiferromagnetic/charge order (AFM/CO) clusters. All the films show colossal magnetoresistance but its temperature and magnetic field dependence are drastically different. In the lower temperature region the magnetic field dependent isothermal resistivity also shows signature of metamagnetic transitions. The observed results have been explained in terms of the variation of the relative fractions of the coexisting FM and AFM/CO phases as a function of the substrate induced strain and oxygen vacancy induced quenched disorder.

All the samples are single phase and have grain size ~1-2 micrometer. The variation of magnetic and magnetotransport properties as a function of the variance sigma^2 show some interesting trends. As sigma^2 increases, the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic (PM-FM) transition shows a gradual decrease and broadening, while the decrease in insulator metal transition (IMT) is accompanied by sharpening. However, near equality of TC and TIM at intermediate values of sigma2 could be understood in terms of the competing quenched and the grain boundary disorder. The variation of peak MR (maximum MR around TC/TIM) with sigma2 shows that maximum low field MR =35 % at H=3 kOe (68 % at H=10 kOe) is centered around sigma2 = 0.009857 {A}2 (x=0.25). This shows that huge intrinsic MR can be obtained at relatively higher temperatures and lower magnetic fields in the region of enhanced phase fluctuations.

Sm0.53Sr0.47MnO3 thin films were deposited on single crystal LaAlO3 (LAO/(001)) and SrTiO3 (STO/(001)) substrates by DC magnetron sputtering. The theta-2theta and omega-2theta scans show that these films have very good crystallinity and the films on LAO and STO are under compressive and tensile strain, respectively. The films on LAO and STO substrates show ferromagnetic (insulator-metal) transition at TC \sim 126 K (at TIM \sim 128 K) and 120 K (TIM \sim 117K), respectively. The magnetic state at T<TC is akin to cluster glass, which is formed by the presence of charge ordered-antiferromagnetic clusters in the ferromagnetic matrix. Huge drop in the resistivity at TIM and the associated hysteresis with respect to cooling and warming cycles reveal the bicritical and the first order nature of phase transition, which is also confirmed by the Banerjee criterion. The differences and similarities in the functional properties of films are explained in terms of substrate modified magnetic phase coexistence.

Decrease of lattice parameters as determined by x-ray diffraction confirm the substitution of fluorine. The superconducting transition temperature is 27.5 K which is observed at do** level of x=0.2. This superconducting material LaO1-xFxFeAs exhibits interesting microstructural characteristic. This relates to the existence of another structural phase, besides the standard phase, having c parameters of ~12.67A. This suggests existence of modulated structure, similar to the cuprates, in these new oxypnictides. This phase may have new impacts on this new high-Tc family.

The perovskite manganites of general formula RE_1-xAe_xMnO_3 (RE= rare earth,AE=Ca, Sr, Ba and Pb)have drawn considerable attention, especially following the discovery of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR). They exhibit extraordinary large magnetoresistance pronounced as CMR in the vicinity of insulator-metal/paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition at a relatively large applied magnetic fields. However, for applied aspectes, occurence of significant CMR at low applied magnetic fields would be required. This review consists of of two sections: In the first section we have extensively reviewed the salient features e.g. structure, phase diagram, double exchange mechansim, Jahn Teller effect, different types of ordering and phase separation of CMR mangnaites. The second is devoted to an overview of experimental results on CMR and related magnetotransport characteristics at low magnetic fields for doped manganites such as polycrystalline La_0.67Ca_0.33MnO_3 films, Ag admixed La_0.67Ca_0.33MnO_3 films, polycrystalline (La_0.7Ca_0.2Ba_0.1MnO_3)and epitaxial (La_0.67Ca_0.33MnO_3) films on different substrates, nanophasic La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3, mangnaite-polymer composites (La_0.7Ba_0.2Sr_0.1MnO_3-PMMA and La_0.67Ca_0.33MnO_3-PMMA)and double layered polycrystalline (La_1.4Ca_1.6-xBa_xMn_2O_7) and films (La_1.4Ca_1.6Mn_2O_7). Some other potential magnetoresistive materials e.g. pyrochlores, chalcogenides, ruthenates, diluted magnetic semiconductors, magnetic tunnel junctions, nanocontacts etc have aslo been briefly dealt with. The review concludes with the summary of results for low field magnetotransport behaviour and prospectes for applications.

These single phase films having grain size in the range 70-100 nm exhibit ferromagnetic transition at T_C ~ 107K. The short range ferromagnetic ordering due to in plane spin coherence is evidenced to occur at a higher temperature around 225 K. Insulator/semiconductor to metal transition occurs at a lower temperature T_P ~ 55K. The transport mechanism above T_C is of Mott`s variable range hop** type. Below T_C the current-voltage characteristics show non-linear behaviour that becomes stronger with decreasing temperature. At low temperatures below T_CA ~ 30K a magnetically frustrated spin canted state is observed. The DLCMO films exhibit resonable low field magnetoresistance and at 77K the magnetoresistance ratio is ~ 5% at 0.6 kOe and \~ 13% at 3 kOe.

All the samples are single phasic having orthorhombic unit cell. The lattice parameters decrease on lowering the sintering temperature (T_S). The crystallite as well as particle size also show strong dependence on the sintering temperature. All the samples possess insulator-metal (T_IM) as well as paramagnetic-ferromagnetic (T_C) transitions. The T_C shows a small variation [274K (S10) to 256K (S6)] as a function of sintering temperature whereas the T_IM goes down from 267K (S10) to 138K (S6), a strong decrease of 129K. This T_C-T_IM discrepancy is due to the fact that whereas the former is an intrinsic characteristic, the latter depends strongly on the extrinsic factors e.g. synthesis conditions grain boundaries and associated disorders. For all the samples MR shows strong dependence on T_S. The MR increases on lowering the temperature as well as on increasing the field with the occurrence of an intrinsic contribution around T_C. These variations of MR for all the samples have been explained in terms of the microstructural variations and spin-polarized tunneling at low temperatures.

A detailed investigation of the effect of PMMA on the structure, microstructure and magneto-transport properties of manganite La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3 (LCMO) is presented. LCMO-PMMA nanostructured composites have been synthesized by a unique polymeric sol-gel route, which leads to improved solubility of PMMA in the LCMO matrix. The LCMO phase is grown in the presence of varying PMMA concentration at ~500 ^0 C. This route yields single phase material and the grain size is observed to decrease slightly with increasing PMMA concentration. On increasing the PMMA concentration, T_C undergoes a small decrease, resistivity is observed to increase by two orders of magnitude, with a concomitant large decrease in T_IM, e.g., from 218 K for virgin LCMO to 108 K for 50 wt% PMMA admixed LCMO. Low field magneto-resistance measured in the temperature range 77-300 K shows considerable enhancement as a function of the PMMA concentration. These phenomena are explained by taking into account the increased intergranular disorder as a consequence of PMMA admixture.

In this paper, we have studied the effect of strain relaxation on magneto-transport properties of La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3 epitaxial films (200 nm thick), which were deposited by pulsed laser deposition technique under identical conditions. All the films are epitaxial and have cubic unit cell. The amount of strain relaxation has been varied by taking three different single crystal substrates of SrTiO_3, LaAlO_3 and MgO. It has been found that for thicker films the strain gets relaxed and produces variable amount of disorder depending on the strength of strain relaxation. The magnitude of lattice relaxation has been found to be 0.384, 3.057 and 6.411 percent for film deposited on SrTiO_3, LaAlO_3 and MgO respectively. The films on LaAlO_3 and SrTiO_3 show higher T_{IM} of 243 K and 217 K respectively as compared to T_{IM} of 191 K for the film on MgO. Similarly T_C of the films on SrTiO_3 and LaAlO_3 is sharper and has value of 245 K and 220 K respectively whereas the TC of the film on MgO is 175 K. Higher degree of relaxation creates more defects and hence TIM (T_C) of the film on MgO is significantly lower than of SrTiO_3 and LaAlO_3. We have adopted a different approach to correlate the effect of strain relaxation on magneto-transport properties of LCMO films by evaluating the resistivity variation through Mott's VRH model. The variable presence of disorder in these thick films due to lattice relaxation which have been analyzed through Mott's VRH model provides a strong additional evidence that the strength of lattice relaxation produces disorder dominantly by increase in density of defects such as stacking faults, dislocations, etc. which affect the magneto-transport properties of thick epitaxial La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3 films.
