In this work, we measure the volumetric mean radius of the Earth, reproducing the historical experiment of Eratosthenes, carried out around 240 BC, in the ancient cities of Siena and Alexandria. Here, we perform measurements in the cities of Rio de Janeiro-RJ-Brazil and Teresina-PI-Brazil, whose longitude coordinates are close. Using simple equipment, such as plumb lines and rulers, we simultaneously measure the height of an object and its shadow's length at midday, when the Sun is at its highest elevation, in order to obtain the shadow angle. After determining the distance (latitude) between cities from satellite data, we use the measured shadow angles to estimate the volume mean radius of the Earth, from basic trigonometric arguments, finding a result whose error is $0.5 \% $ with respect to the literature. Furthermore, from the difference of time in which the Sun is at the highest point in the sky in each location, we also estimate the Earth's angular velocity. In summary, we pedagogically present how to obtain the mean curvature of the planet, assuming an approximately spherical surface, in addition to its angular velocity.

Enhanced superconductivity, Kondo behavior and negative-curvature resistivity of oxygen-irradiated thin films of aluminium

We followed the evolution of the normal and superconducting properties of Al thin films after each session of various successive oxygen irradiations at ambient temperature. Such irradiated films, similar to the granular ones, exhibit enhanced superconductivity, Kondo behavior and negative-curvature resistivity. Two distinct roles of oxygen are identified: as a damage-causing projectile and as an implanted oxidizing agent. The former gives rise to the processes involved in the conventional recovery stages. The latter, considered within the context of the Cabrera-Mott model, gives rise to a multistep process which involves charges transfer and creation of stabilized vacancies and charged defects. Based on the outcome of this multistep process, we consider (i) the negative curvature resistivity as a manifestation of a thermally-assisted liberation of trapped electric charges, (ii) the Kondo contribution as a spin-flip scattering from paramagnetic, color-center-type defects, and (iii) the enhancement of T_{c} as being due to a lattice softening facilitated by the stabilized defects and vacancies. The similarity in the phase diagrams of granular and irradiated films as well as the aging effects are discussed along the same line of reasoning.

Magnetic phase diagram of the layered superconductor Bi{2+x}Sr{2-x}CuO{6+δ} (Bi2201) with Tc~7 K

We report on magnetization measurements performed on a single crystal of Bi{2+x}Sr{2-x}CuO{6+δ} with Tc\sim7 K for H||c-axis. The isofield M(T) curves show a large reversible region, with a pronounced rounding effect as M approaches zero which prevents the determination of Tc(H). Deviations from the linear behavior of magnetisation near Tc(H) are studied through the asymptotic behavior of $\sqrt{-M(T)}\sim(T-Ta)^m$, where m is an exponent and Ta an apparent temperature transition. Values of m deviates from the expected mean field value, 1/2, suggesting the importance of phase fluctuations. Resulting values of Ta, interpreted as the onset of phase correlations, decrease as field increases showing an upward curvature. Values of Tc(H) are obtained through a two-dimensional critical scaling analysis obeyed by many M(T) curves. The resulting phase diagram do not show upward curvature and lies below the Ta(H) line. The value of H{c2}(0) estimated from the initial slope $H_{c2}/dT is twice the value suggested by the phase diagram. Amplitude fluctuations above Ta(H) are explained in terms of a Ginzburg-Landau approach extended to high reduced temperatures and magnetic fields by the introduction of a total-energy cutoff in the fluctuation spectrum.

We study the controlled introduction of defects in GaMnAs by irradiating the samples with energetic ion beams, which modify the magnetic properties of the DMS. Our study focuses on the low-carrier-density regime, starting with as-grown GaMnAs films and decreasing even further the number of carriers, through a sequence of irradiation doses. We did a systematic study of magnetization as a function of temperature and of the irradiation ion dose. We also performed in-situ room temperature resistivity measurements as a function of the ion dose. We observe that both magnetic and transport properties of the samples can be experimentally manipulated by controlling the ion-beam parameters. For highly irradiated samples, the magnetic measurements indicate the formation of magnetic clusters together with a transition to an insulating state. The experimental data are compared with mean-field calculations for magnetization. The independent control of disorder and carrier density in the calculations allows further insight on the individual role of this two factors in the ion-beam-induced modification of GaMnAs.
