Incorporating both gain and loss into electromagnetic systems provides possibilities to engineer effects in unprecedented ways. Concerning electromagnetic effects in isotropic media that have concurrently electric and magnetic responses, there is in fact a degree of freedom to distribute the gain and loss in different effective material parameters. In this paper, we analytically scrutinize wave interactions with those media, and, most importantly, we contemplate the extreme scenario where such media are anti-Hermitian. Considering various conditions for excitation, polarization, and geometry, we uncover important effects and functionalities such as lasing into both surface waves and propagating waves, conversion of evanescent source fields to transmitted propagating waves, full absorption, and enhancing backward to forward scattering ratio. We hope that these findings explicitly show the potential of anti-Hermiticity to be used in optical physics as well as microwave engineering for creating and using unconventional wave phenomena.

In conventional inductive wireless power devices, the energy is transferred via only reactive near fields, which is equivalent to non-radiative Förster energy transfer in optics. Radiation from transmitting and receiving coils is usually considered as a parasitic effect that reduces the power transfer efficiency. As long as the distance between the two antennas is small as compared to the antenna size, conventional WPT devices offer rather high power transfer efficiency, of the order of 80-90\%. However, for larger distances, the transfer efficiency dramatically drops, making such devices not practical. In this paper, we develop a dynamic theory of wireless power transfer between two small loop antennas, clarify the role of far-field radiation, and find a possibility to realize efficient wireless power transfer at large distances utilizing the regime of radiation suppression due to optimized mutual dynamic interactions between the transmitting and receiving antennas. The analytical results have been validated by simulations and measurements, and they open a possibility to greatly expand the range of distances of compact wireless power transfer devices. The developed theory can be applied also to coupling between antennas of different types and to energy transfer between nano-objects.

Role of the normal polarization in the far-field subwavelength imaging granted by a dielectric microsphere or microcylinder is discussed and the hypotheses explaining this experimental fact are suggested. One of these hypotheses is confirmed by exact numerical simulations. This mechanism of the magnifying superlens operation is based on the excitation of cree** waves at a curved dielectric interface by a normally polarized dipole. The set of cree** waves after their ejection from the surface creates an imaging beam which may mimic either a Bessel beam or a Mathieu beam depending on the microparticle radius. This mechanism corresponds to the asymmetric coherent illumination.

We demonstrate an improvement in the performance of organic photovoltaic (OPV) systems based on small molecules by ionic gating via controlled reversible n-do** of multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) coated on fullerenes ETL: C60 and C70. Such electric double layer charging (EDLC) do**, achieved by ionic liquid (IL) charging, allows tuning the electronic concentration in MWCNT and in the fullerene planar acceptor layers, increasing it by orders of magnitude. This leads to decreasing the series and increasing the shunt resistances of OPV and allows to use of thick (up to 200 nm) ETLs, increasing the durability and stability of OPV. Two stages of OPV enhancement are described, upon the increase of gating bias Vg: at small (or even zero) Vg the extended interface of IL and porous transparent MWCNT is charged by gating, and the fullerene charge collector is significantly improved, becoming an ohmic contact. This changes the S-shaped I-V curve via improving the electron collection by n-doped MWCNT cathode with ohmic interfacial contact. The I-V curves further improve at higher gating bias Vg due to the raising of the Fermi level and lowering of MWCNT work function. At the next qualitative stage, the acceptor fullerene layer becomes n-doped by electron injection from MWCNT while ions of IL penetrate into fullerene. At this step the internal built-in field is created within OPV, which helps exciton dissociation and charge separation/transport, increasing further the Jsc and the FF (Fill factor). Overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) increases nearly 50 times in CuPc/fullerene OPV with MWCNT cathode. The concept of ionically gated MWCNT-ETL interface is numerically simulated by the drift-diffusion model which allows to fit the observed I-V curves.

We generalize the concept of parity-time symmetric structures with the goal to create meta-atoms exhibiting extraordinary abilities to overcome the presumed limitations in the scattering of overall lossless particles, such as non-zero forward scattering and the equality of scattering and extinction powers for all lossless particles. Although the forward scattering amplitude and the extinction cross section of our proposed meta-atoms vanish, they scatter incident energy into other directions, with controllable directionality. These meta-atoms possess extreme electromagnetic properties not achievable for passive scatterers. As an example, we study meta-atoms consisting of two or three small dipole scatters. We consider possible microwave realizations in the form of short dipole antennas loaded by lumped elements. The proposed meta-atom empowers extraordinary response of a shadow-free scatterer and theoretically enables most unusual material properties when used as a building block of an artificial medium.

Conventional wireless power transfer systems consist of a microwave power generator and a microwave power receiver separated by some distance. To realize efficient power transfer, the system is typically brought to resonance, and the coupled-antenna mode is optimized to reduce radiation into the surrounding space. In this scheme, any modification of the receiver position or of its electromagnetic properties results in the necessity of dynamically tuning the whole system to restore the resonant matching condition. It implies poor robustness to the receiver location and load impedance, as well as additional energy consumption in the control network. In this study, we introduce a new paradigm for wireless power delivery based on which the whole system, including transmitter and receiver and the space in between, forms a unified microwave power generator. In our proposed scenario the load itself becomes part of the generator. Microwave oscillations are created directly at the receiver location, eliminating the need for dynamical tuning of the system within the range of the self-oscillation regime. The proposed concept has relevant connections with the recent interest in parity-time symmetric systems, in which balanced loss and gain distributions enable unusual electromagnetic responses.

We show that the axial component of the magnetic permeability tensor is resonant for a wire medium consisting of high-index epsilon-positive nanowires, and its real part changes the sign at a certain frequency. At this frequency the medium experiences the topological transition from the hyperbolic to the elliptic type of dispersion. We show that the transition regime is characterized by extremely strong dependence of the permeability on the wave vector. This implies very high density of electromagnetic states that results in the filamentary pattern and noticeable Purcell factor for a transversely oriented magnetic dipole.

The suggested system comprises an array of parallel metal nanowires grown on top of a photovoltaic semiconductor and standing free in the vacuum gap between the host dielectric layer and the emitter, so that their ends are sufficiently close to the emitting surface. Due to the resonant near-field coupling between this wire medium and the emitter and due to the optimized layered structure of the whole system, the strongly super-Planckian radiative heat flux of resonant nature is engineered.

In this paper, we theoretically show that a broadband resonant enhancement of emission may occur for infrared sources located in a polaritonic wire medium. The reason of this enhancement is overlap** of two topological transitions of the wave dispersion in the medium. The first topological transition has been recently revealed as an effect inherent to polaritonic wire media. The second one was theoretically uncovered in another material. In this work we reveal it for wire media and prove the possibility to combine both these transitions with the purpose to obtain the broadband resonant Purcell factor. We compare the results obtained for two orientations of a subwavelength electric dipole embedded into wire medium -- that along the optical axis and that perpendicular to it -- and report on the resonant isotropic radiation enhancement. Also, we reveal the enhancement of radiation to free space from a finite sample of the wire medium.

The ideal black body fully absorbs all incident rays, that is, all propagating waves created by arbitrary sources. The known idealized realization of a black body is the perfectly matched layer (PML), widely used in numerical electromagnetics. However, ideal black bodies and PMLs do not interact with evanescent fields existing near any finite-size source, and the energy stored in these fields cannot be harvested. Here we introduce the concept of the ideal conjugate matched layer (CML), which fully absorbs energy of both propagating and evanescent fields of sources acting as an ideal sink for electromagnetic energy. Conjugate matched absorbers have exciting application potentials, as resonant attractors of electromagnetic energy into the absorber volume. We derive the conditions on the constitutive parameters of media which can serve as CML materials, numerically study the performance of planar and cylindrical CML and discuss possible realizations of such materials as metal-dielectric composites.

In this paper, we study topological phase transition in a wire medium operating at infrared frequencies. This transition occurs in the reciprocal space between the indefinite (open-surface) regime of the metamaterial to its dielectric (closed-surface) regime. Due to the spatial dispersion inherent to wire medium, a hybrid regime turns out to be possible at the transition frequency. Both such surfaces exist at the same frequency and touch one another. At this frequency, all values of the axial wavevector correspond to propagating spatial harmonics. The implication of this regime is the overwhelming radiation enhancement. We numerically investigated the gain in radiated power for a sub-wavelength dipole source submerged into such the medium. In contrast to all previous works, this gain (called the Purcell factor) turns out to be higher for an axial dipole than for a transversal one.

We demonstrate possibilities for realizing different kinds of symmetric absorbers, including resonant, ultra-broadband, angularly selective, and all-angle absorbers. The physical principle behind these designs is explained considering balanced electric and magnetic responses of unit cells. Photovoltaic devices and thermal emitters are the two most important potential applications of the proposed designs.

The Purcell effect - the modification of the spontaneous emission rate in presence of resonant cavities or other resonant objects - is a fundamental effect of quantum electrodynamics. However, a change of the emission rate caused by environment different from free space has a classical counterpart. Not only quantum emitters, but any small antenna tuned to the resonance is an oscillator with radiative losses, and the influence of the environment on its radiation can be understood and measured in terms of the antenna radiation resistance. We present a general approach which is applicable to measurements of the Purcell factor for radio antennas and to calculations of these factors for quantum emitters. Our methodology is suitable for calculation and measurement of both electric and magnetic Purcell factors, it is versatile and applies to various frequency ranges. The approach is illustrated by a general equivalent scheme and allows the Purcell factor to be expressed through the continious radiation of a small antenna in presence of the environment.

Here, we demonstrate that the power spectral density of thermal radiation at a specific wavelength produced by a body of finite dimensions set up in free space under a fixed temperature could be made theoretically arbitrary high, if one could realize double negative metamaterials with arbitrary small loss and arbitrary high absolute values of permittivity and permeability (at a given frequency). This result refutes the widespread belief that Planck's law itself sets a hard upper limit on the spectral density of power emitted by a finite macroscopic body whose size is much greater that the wavelength. Here we propose a physical realization of a metamaterial emitter whose spectral emissivity can be greater than that of the ideal black body under the same conditions. Due to the reciprocity between the heat emission and absorption processes such cooled down superemitter also acts as an optimal sink for the thermal radiation --- the "thermal black hole" --- which outperforms Kirchhoff-Planck's black body which can absorb only the rays directly incident on its surface. The results may open a possibility to realize narrowband super-Planckian thermal radiators and absorbers for future thermo-photovoltaic systems and other devices.

Measurement results for a meandered planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) loaded with magneto-dielectric and dielectric materials are presented. Figures of merit and ways to compare antennas with different fillings materials are discussed. The used magneto-dielectric material is described, the radiation mechanism of the meandered PIFA is studied, and the proper position for dielectric and magneto-dielectric filling is discussed and identified. Identical-size antennas with dielectric and magneto-dielectric fillings are compared at the same resonance frequency using the radiation quality factor as the figure of merit. It is seen, that the benefit from the magneto-dielectric filling material is moderate and strongly dependent on the positioning of the filling.

We address the question of the optimal choice of loading material for antenna miniaturization. A new approach to identify the optimal loading material, dielectric or magnetic, is presented for resonant antennas. Instead of equivalent resonance circuits or transmission-line models, we use the analysis of radiation to identify the fields contributing mostly to the stored energy. This helps to determine the beneficial material type. The formulated principle is qualitatively illustrated using three antenna types. Guidelines for different antenna types are presented.

In this paper we theoretically show that the Raman scattering by a core-shell micron or submicron particle with epsilon-near-zero metamaterial shell and silica spherical or cylindrical core can combine useful features of cavity-enhanced and surface-enhanced Raman scattering. The cavity resonance together with the plasmon resonance lead to the giant enhancement of the field inside the metashell which is performed as a layer of silver or gold nanoparticles and is penetrable for molecules to be detected. This approach results in the significant increase of both effective volume in which molecules are affected by enhanced electric field and Raman gain averaged over this volume.

Several recent works have emphasized the role of spatial dispersion in wire media, and demonstrated that arrays of parallel metallic wires may behave very differently from a uniaxial local material with negative permittivity. Here, we investigate using local and non-local homogenization methods the effect of spatial dispersion on reflection from the mushroom structure introduced by Sievenpiper. The objective of the paper is to clarify the role of spatial dispersion in the mushroom structure and demonstrate that under some conditions it is suppressed. The metamaterial substrate, or metasurface, is modeled as a wire medium covered with an impedance surface. Surprisingly, it is found that in such configuration the effects of spatial dispersion may be nearly suppressed when the slab is electrically thin, and that the wire medium can be modeled very accurately using a local model. This result paves the way for the design of artificial surfaces that exploit the plasmonic-type response of the wire medium slab.

The objective of this paper is all-angle artificial magnetic conductor, i.e. artificial magnetic conductor that has stable magnetic-wall effect with respect to the incidence angle. Furthermore, we seek for a design that would be easy for manufacturing. In order to achieve this we use grounded uniaxial material slabs and we do not constrict ourselves to naturally available materials. Instead, we assume that the desired parameters can be synthesized using the emerging artificial electromagnetic materials. It is found that it is possible to have an all-angle magnetic-wall effect for both TE and TM polarization. Especially for the TM fields the structure would be easily manufacturable. The proposed structure has similar appearance as more well-known artificial impedance surfaces, but the design parameters and the physical properties behind the magnetic wall effect are novel. The performance of the proposed artificial magnetic conductor is verified with numerical simulations. This paper introduces a new approach how to obtain a magnetic-wall effect. It is possible to use this this approach also together with other ways of obtaining the magnetic-wall effect for dual-band operation.

The idea of isotropic resonant magnetism in the visible range of frequencies known from precedent publications is developed having in mind achievements of the modern chemistry. Plasmonic colloidal nanoparticles covering a silica core form a cluster with resonant and isotropic magnetic response. Two approximate models giving the qualitative mutual agreement are used to evaluate the magnetic polarizability of the cluster. It is shown that the electrostatic interaction of nanocolloids decreases the resonant frequency of an individual complex magnetic scatterer (nanocluster) compared to the previously studied variant of a planar circular nanocluster with same size. This means the reduction of the optical size of nanoclusters that presumably allows one to avoid strong spatial dispersion within the frequency range of the negative permeability.

We demonstrate that an array of metallic nanorods enables sub-wavelength (near-field) imaging at infrared frequencies. Using an homogenization approach, it is theoretically proved that under certain conditions the incoming radiation can be transmitted by the array of nanorods over a significant distance with fairly low attenuation. The propagation mechanism does not involve a resonance of material parameters and thus the resolution is not strongly affected by material losses and has wide bandwidth. The sub-wavelength imaging with $λ/10$ resolution by silver rods at 30 THz is demonstrated numerically using full-wave electromagnetic simulator.

In this paper, we propose to use such layers as artificial magnetic materials in the design of patch antennas. The new HIS is simulated and patch antennas partially filled by these composite layers are measured in order to test how much the antenna dimensions can be reduced. In order to experimentally investigate the frequency behavior of the material, different sizes of the patches are designed and tested with the same material layer. Also the height of the patch is changed in order to find the best possible position for minimizing the antenna size. This composite layer of an artificial magnetic material has made the antenna smaller while kee** the bandwidth characteristics of the antenna about the same. The cases of both magnetic and electric uniaxial scatterers with both longitudinal and transverse orientations with respect to the waveguide axis are considered. It is shown that in all considered cases waveguides support propagating modes below cutoff of the hollow waveguide within some frequency bands near the resonant frequency of the individual scatterers. The modes are forward ones except the case of transversely oriented magnetic scatterers when the mode turns out to be backward. The described effects can be applied for the miniaturization of the guiding structures.

Dispersion properties of electromagnetic crystals formed by small uniaxial resonant scatterers (magnetic or electric) are studied using the local field approach. The goal of the study is to determine the conditions under which the homogenization of such crystals can be made. Therefore the consideration is limited by the frequency region where the wavelength in the host medium is larger than the lattice periods. It is demonstrated that together with known restriction for the homogenization related with the large values of the material parameters there is an additional restriction related with their small absolute values. From the other hand, the homogenization becomes allowed in both cases of large and small material parameters for special directions of propagation. Two unusual effects inherent to the crystals under consideration are revealed: flat isofrequency contour which allows subwavelength imaging using canalization regime and birefringence of extraordinary modes which can be used for beam splitting.

The problem of plane-wave diffraction on semi-infinite orthorhombic electromagnetic (photonic) crystals of general kind is considered. Boundary conditions are obtained in the form of infinite system of equations relating amplitudes of incident wave, eigenmodes excited in the crystal and scattered spatial harmonics. Generalized Ewald-Oseen extinction principle is formulated on the base of deduced boundary conditions. The knowledge of properties of infinite crystal's eigenmodes provides option to solve the diffraction problem for the corresponding semi-infinite crystal numerically. In the case when the crystal is formed by small inclusions which can be treated as point dipolar scatterers with fixed direction the problem admits complete rigorous analytical solution. The amplitudes of excited modes and scattered spatial harmonics are expressed in terms of the wave vectors of the infinite crystal by closed-form analytical formulae. A dispersion equation is derived and then used to calculate the effective permittivity and permeability in the frequency band where the lattice can be homogenized. The backward wave region in which both the effective permittivity and permeability are negative is analyzed. Some open and controversial questions are discussed. It is shown that previous experimental results confirming the existence of backward waves in such a structure can be in deed explained in terms of negative material parameters. However, these parameters are not quasi-static and thus the known analytical formulas for the effective material parameters of this structure, which have been widely used and discussed in the literature, were not correct, and it was the reason of some objections to the authors of that experiment.

It is found that there exist composite media that exhibit strong spatial dispersion even in the very large wavelength limit. This follows from the study of lattices of ideally conducting parallel thin wires (wire media). In fact, our analysis reveals that the description of this medium by means of a local dispersive uniaxial dielectric tensor is not complete, leading to unphysical results for the propagation of electromagnetic waves at any frequencies. Since non--local constitutive relations have been usually considered in the past as a second order approximation, meaningful in the short wavelength limit, the aforementioned result presents a relevant theoretical interest. In addition, since such wire media have been recently used as a constituent of some discrete artificial media (or metamaterials), the reported results open the question of the relevance of the spatial dispersion in the characterization of these artificial media.
