While the third run of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is ongoing, the underlying theory that extends the Standard Model remains so far unknown. Left-Right Models (LRMs) introduce a new gauge sector, and can restore parity symmetry at high enough energies. If LRMs are indeed realized in nature, the mediators of the new weak force can be searched for in colliders via their direct production. We recast existing experimental limits from the LHC Run 2 and derive generic bounds on the masses of the heavy LRM gauge bosons. As a novelty, we discuss the dependence of the $W_R$ and $Z_R$ total decay width on the LRM scalar content, obtaining model-independent bounds within the specific realizations of the LRM scalar sectors analysed here. These bounds avoid the need to detail the spectrum of the scalar sector, and apply in the general case where no discrete symmetry is enforced. Moreover, we emphasize the impact on the $W_R$ production at LHC of general textures of the right-handed quark mixing matrix without manifest left-right symmetry. We find that the $W_R$ and $Z_R$ masses are constrained to lie above $2$ TeV and $4$ TeV, respectively.

We study the global boundedness of the solutions of a non-smooth forced oscillator with a periodic and real analytic forcing. We show that the impact map associated with this discontinuous equation becomes a real analytic and exact symplectic map when written in suitable canonical coordinates. By an accurate study of the behaviour of the map for large amplitudes and by employing a parametrization KAM theorem, we show that the periodic solutions of the unperturbed oscillator persist as two-dimensional tori under conditions that depend on the Diophantine conditions of the frequency, but are independent on both the amplitude of the orbit and of the specific value of the frequency. This allows the construction of a sequence of nested invariant tori of increasing amplitude that confine the solutions within them, ensuring their boundedness. The same construction may be useful to address such persistence problem for a larger class of non-smooth forced oscillators.

Here, we discuss SM and New Physics (NP) contributions to the rare charm-meson decay $ D^0 \to π^+ π^- \ell^+ \ell^- $. In particular, we discuss the effect of including the lightest scalar isoscalar resonance in the SM picture, namely, the $f_0 (500)$, which manifests in a big portion of the allowed phase space. Other than showing in the total branching ratio at an observable level of about $ 20\% $, the $f_0 (500)$ resonance manifests as interference terms with the vector resonances, such as at high invariant mass of the leptonic pair in distinct angular observables. Recent data from LHCb optimize the sensitivity to $P$-wave contributions, that we analyse in view of the inclusion of vector resonances. We propose the measurement of alternative observables which are sensitive to the $S$-wave and are straightforward to implement experimentally. This leads to a new set of null observables, that vanish in the SM due to its gauge and flavour structures. Finally, we study observables that depend on the SM interference with generic NP contributions from semi-leptonic four-fermion operators in the presence of the $S$-wave.

More recently, some researches have focused on the family of non-smooth forced oscillators $ \ddot{x}+\text{sgn}(x)=p(t)$, mainly because it represents a simple limit scenario of Duffing-type equations for when $g$ is bounded. Here, we provide a simple proof for the boundedness of solutions of the non-smooth forced oscillator in the case that the forcing term $p(t)$ is a $T$-periodic Lebesgue integrable function with vanishing average. We reach this result by constructing a sequence of invariant tori whose union of their interiors covers all the $(t,x,\dot x)$-space, $(t,x,\dot{x})\in \mathbb{S}^1\times\mathbb{R}^2$.

Urgent theoretical progress is needed in order to provide an estimate in the Standard Model of the recent measurement by LHCb of direct CP violation in charm-meson two-body decays. Rescattering effects must be taken into account for a meaningful theoretical description of the amplitudes involved in such category of observables, as signaled by the presence of large strong phases. We discuss the computation of the latter effects based on a two-channel coupled dispersion relation, which exploits isospin-zero phase-shifts and inelasticity parameterizations of data coming from the rescattering processes $ ππ\to ππ$, $ πK \to πK $, and $ ππ\to K \overline{K} $. The determination of the subtraction constants of the dispersive integrals relies on the leading contributions to the transition amplitudes from the $ 1/N_C $ counting, where $N_C$ is the number of QCD colours. Furthermore, we use the measured values of the branching ratios to help in selecting the non-perturbative inputs in the isospin limit, from which we predict values for the CP asymmetries. We find that the predicted level of CP violation is much below the experimental value.

We present a variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm for the efficient bootstrap** of the causal representation of multiloop Feynman diagrams in the Loop-Tree Duality (LTD) or, equivalently, the selection of acyclic configurations in directed graphs. A loop Hamiltonian based on the adjacency matrix describing a multiloop topology, and whose different energy levels correspond to the number of cycles, is minimized by VQE to identify the causal or acyclic configurations. The algorithm has been adapted to select multiple degenerated minima and thus achieves higher detection rates. A performance comparison with a Grover's based algorithm is discussed in detail. The VQE approach requires, in general, fewer qubits and shorter circuits for its implementation, albeit with lesser success rates.

The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) is a universal way of parametrizing New Physics (NP) manifesting as new, heavy particle interactions with the Standard Model (SM) degrees of freedom, that respect the SM gauged symmetries. Higher order terms in the NP interactions possibly lead to sizable effects, mandatory for meaningful phenomenological studies, such as contributions to neutral meson mixing, which typically pushes the scale of NP to energy scales much beyond the reach of direct searches in colliders. I discuss the leading-order renormalization of double-insertions of dimension-6 four-fermion operators that change quark flavor by one unit (i.e., $ | ΔF | = 1 $, $ F = $ strange-, charm-, or bottom-flavor), by dimension-8 operators relevant to meson mixing (i.e., $ | ΔF | = 2 $) in SMEFT. Then, I consider the phenomenological implications of contributions proportional to large Yukawas, setting bounds on the Wilson coefficients of operators of dimension-6 via the leading logarithmic contributions. Given the underlying interest of SMEFT to encode full-fledged models at low energies, this work stresses the need to consider dimension-8 operators in phenomenological applications of dimension-6 operators of SMEFT.

We present a novel benchmark application of a quantum algorithm to Feynman loop integrals. The two on-shell states of a Feynman propagator are identified with the two states of a qubit and a quantum algorithm is used to unfold the causal singular configurations of multiloop Feynman diagrams. To identify such configurations, we exploit Grover's algorithm for querying multiple solutions over unstructured datasets, which presents a quadratic speed-up over classical algorithms when the number of solutions is much smaller than the number of possible configurations. A suitable modification is introduced to deal with topologies in which the number of causal states to be identified is nearly half of the total number of states. The output of the quantum algorithm in \emph{IBM Quantum} and \emph{QUTE Testbed} simulators is used to bootstrap the causal representation in the loop-tree duality of representative multiloop topologies. The algorithm may also find application and interest in graph theory to solve problems involving directed acyclic graphs.

We explore the limitations of this program, and identify the measurement of $|V_{cb}|$ as one of the key ingredients in which progress beyond current expectations is necessary to maximize future sensitivity. We speculate on possible solutions to this bottleneck. Given the current tension with the standard model (SM) in semileptonic $B$ decays, we explore how its resolution may impact the search for new physics in mixing. Even if new physics has the same CKM and loop suppressions of flavor changing processes as the SM, the sensitivity will reach 2 TeV, and it can be much higher if any SM suppressions are lifted. We illustrate the discovery potential of this program.

We consider a left-right symmetric extension of the Standard Model where the spontaneous breakdown of the left-right symmetry is triggered by doublets. The electroweak $ρ$ parameter is protected from large corrections in this Doublet Left-Right Model (DLRM), contrary to the triplet case. This allows in principle for more diverse patterns of symmetry breaking. We consider several constraints on the gauge and scalar sectors of DLRM: the unitarity of scattering processes involving gauge bosons with longitudinal polarisations, the radiative corrections to the muon $Δr$ parameter and the electroweak precision observables measured at the $Z$ pole and at low energies. Combining these constraints within the frequentist CKMfitter approach, we see that the fit pushes the scale of left-right symmetry breaking up to a few TeV, while favouring an electroweak symmetry breaking triggered not only by the $ SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R $ bi-doublet, which is the case most commonly considered in the literature, but also by the $ SU(2)_L $ doublet.

Smart metering is an essential feature of smart grids, allowing residential customers to monitor and reduce electricity costs. Devices called smart meters allows residential customers to monitor and reduce electricity costs, promoting energy saving, demand management, and energy efficiency. However, monitoring a households' energy consumption through smart meters poses serious privacy threats, and have thus become a major privacy issue. Hence, a significant amount of research has appeared recently with the purpose of providing methods and mechanisms to reconcile smart metering technologies and privacy requirements. However, most current approaches fall short in meeting one of several of the requirements for privacy preserving smart metering systems. In this paper we show how Intel SGX technology can be used to provide a simple and general solution for the smart metering privacy problem that meets all these requirements in a satisfactory way. Moreover, we present also an implementation of the proposed architecture as well as a series of experiments that have been carried out in order to assess how the proposed solution performs in comparison to a second implementation of the architecture that completely disregards privacy issues.

The theoretical uncertainties of branching ratios within the SM are well under control. In the $ B $ sector, it is tentative to explain the $ B $-meson anomalies $ R_{D^{(\ast)}} $ and/or $ R_{K^{(\ast)}} $ by effects of physics beyond the SM. Although NP seems to be present in the third fermion generation it might also manifest in the flavor changing neutral current transition $ s \to d $. Together with the anticipated good experimental sensitivities and accurate theoretical predictions for $ K\to πν\bar ν$, this motivates studies of correlated effects of NP in rare $ K\to πν\bar ν$ and $ B \to K^{(*)} μ^+ μ^- $ decays. Here we consider the loop induced effects in $ K \to πν\barν$ in two leptoquark models designed to address lepton-flavor universality violation in the $ R_{K^{(\ast)}} $ anomalies.

We argue that the high boosts of $b$-hadrons originating from on-shell $Z$ boson decays allow for a full reconstruction of the decay kinematics in hadronic $τ$ decay modes (up to discrete ambiguities). This, together with the potentially large statistics of $Z\to b\bar b$, opens the door for the experimental determination of $τ$ polarizations in these rare $b$-hadron decays. In light of the current experimental situation on lepton flavor universality in rare semileptonic $B$ decays, we discuss the complementary short-distance physics information carried by the $τ$ polarizations and suggest suitable theoretically clean observables in the form of single- and double-$τ$ polarization asymmetries.

A natural avenue to extend the Standard Model (SM) is to embed it into a more symmetric framework. Here, I focus in Left-Right (LR) Models, which treat left- and right-handed chiralities on equal footing. Important information about the structure of LR Models comes from meson-mixing observables. Due to the impact of the new contributions to these processes, I consider the calculation of the short-distance QCD effects correcting the LR Model contributions to meson-mixing observables at the Next-to-Leading Order. I then revisit the phenomenology of a simple realization of LR Models, containing doublet scalars, and combine in a global fit electroweak precision observables, direct searches of the new gauge bosons and meson oscillation observables, a task performed within the CKMfitter statistical framework. Finally, I also cover a different issue, namely the modeling of theoretical uncertainties, a class of uncertainties specially important for flavour physics. Different frequentist schemes are compared, and their differences are illustrated with flavour-oriented examples.

The determination of the fundamental parameters of the Standard Model (and its extensions) is often limited by the presence of statistical and theoretical uncertainties. We present several models for the latter uncertainties (random, nuisance, external) in the frequentist framework, and we derive the corresponding $p$-values. In the case of the nuisance approach where theoretical uncertainties are modeled as biases, we highlight the important, but arbitrary, issue of the range of variation chosen for the bias parameters. We introduce the concept of adaptive $p$-value, which is obtained by adjusting the range of variation for the bias according to the significance considered, and which allows us to tackle metrology and exclusion tests with a single and well-defined unified tool, which exhibits interesting frequentist properties. We discuss how the determination of fundamental parameters is impacted by the model chosen for theoretical uncertainties, illustrating several issues with examples from quark flavour physics.

Left-Right (LR) models are extensions of the Standard Model where left-right symmetry is restored at high energies, and which are strongly constrained by kaon mixing described in the framework of the $|ΔS|=2$ effective Hamiltonian. We consider the short-distance QCD corrections to this Hamiltonian both in the Standard Model (SM) and in LR models. The leading logarithms occurring in these short-distance corrections can be resummed within a rigourous Effective Field Theory (EFT) approach integrating out heavy degrees of freedom progressively, or using an approximate simpler method of regions identifying the ranges of loop momentum generating large logarithms in the relevant two-loop diagrams. We compare the two approaches in the SM at next-to-leading order, finding a very good agreement when one scale dominates the problem, but only a fair agreement in the presence of a large logarithm at leading order. We compute the short-distance QCD corrections for LR models at next-to-leading order using the method of regions, and we compare the results with the EFT approach for the $WW'$ box with two charm quarks (together with additional diagrams forming a gauge-invariant combination), where a large logarithm occurs already at leading order. We conclude by providing next-to-leading-order estimates for $cc$, $ct$ and $tt$ boxes in LR models.

Left-Right Models (LRM) attempt at giving an understanding of the violation of parity (or charge-conjugation) by the weak interactions in the SM through a similar description of left- and right-handed currents at high energies. The spontaneous symmetry breaking of the LRM gauge group is triggered by an enlarged Higgs sector, usually consisting of two triplet fields (left-right symmetry breaking) and a bidoublet (electroweak symmetry breaking). I reconsider an alternative LRM with doublet instead of triplet fields. After explaining some features of this model, I discuss constraints on its parameters using electroweak precision observables (combined using the CKMfitter frequentist statistical framework) and neutral-meson mixing observables.

We describe a new technology for the fabrication of inexpensive high-quality mirrors. We begin by chemically producing a large number of metallic nanoparticles coated with organic ligands. The particles are then spread on a liquid substrate where they self-assemble to give optical quality reflective surfaces. Since liquid surfaces can be modified with a variety of means (e.g. rotation, electromagnetic fields), this opens the possibility of making a new class of versatile and inexpensive optical elements that can have complex shapes which can be modified within short time scales. Interferometric measurements show optical quality surfaces. We have obtained reflectivity curves that show 80% peak reflectivities. We are confident that we can improve the reflectivity curves, for theoretical models predict higher values. We expect that nanoengineered liquid mirrors should be useful for scientific and engineering applications. The technology is interesting for large optics, such as large rotating parabolic mirrors, because of its low cost. Furthermore, because the surfaces of ferrofluids can be shaped with magnetic fields, one can generate complex, time varying surfaces difficult to make with conventional techniques.

The trend towards ever larger telescopes and more advanced adaptive optics systems is driving the need for deformable mirrors with a large number of low cost actuators. Liquid mirrors have long been recognized a potential low cost alternative to conventional solid mirrors. By using a water or oil based ferrofluid we are able to benefit from a stronger magnetic response than is found in magnetic liquid metal amalgams and avoid the difficulty of passing a uniform current through a liquid. Depositing a thin silver colloid known as a metal liquid-like film (MELLF) on the ferrofluid surface solves the problem of low reflectivity of pure ferrofluids. This combination provides a liquid optical surface that can be precisely shaped in a magnetic field. We present experimental results obtained with a prototype deformable liquid mirror based on this combination.

In this paper we review the basic Poissonian formulation of quasar variability, using it as a mathematical tool to extract relevant parameters such as the energy, rate and lifetimes of the flares through the analysis of observed light curves. It is shown that in this very general framework the well established anti-correlation between variability amplitude and wavelength can only be understood as an effect of an underlying spectral component which remains stable on long time-scales, and is redder than the variable component. The formalism is applied to the B and R light curves of 42 PG quasars collected by the Wise Observatory group. Variability indices for these data are obtained with a Structure Function analysis. The mean number of living flares is constrained to be in the range between 5 and 100, while their rates are found to be of order 1--100 per yr. Monochromatic optical flare energies of 10^{46-48} erg/A and life-times of 0.5 to 3 yr are derived. Lower limits of typically 25% are established for the contribution of a non-variable component in the R band. The substantial diversity in these properties among quasars invalidates simple versions of the Poissonian model in which flare energies, lifetimes and the background contribution are treated as universal invariants. The good correlation between the EW(H_beta) and the long term variability amplitude is interpreted in a scenario where only the variable component participates in the ionization of the line emitting gas. This idea is consistent with the observed trends of the variability amplitude with lambda, EW(HeII) and the X-ray to optical spectral index (abridged).
