Large-scale magnetic field generation via the kinetic Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in unmagnetized scenarios
Abstract: Collisionless plasma instabilities are fundamental in magnetic field generation in astrophysical scenarios, but their role has been addressed in scenarios where velocity shear is absent. In this work we show that velocity shears must be considered when studying realistic astrophysical scenarios, since these trigger the collisionless Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI). Non-invasive characterization of transverse beam emittance of electrons from a laser-plasma wakefield accelerator in the bubble regime using betatron x-ray radiation

Abstract: We present the first three-dimensional fully kinetic electromagnetic relativistic particle-in-cell simulations of the collision of two interpenetrating plasma shells. The highly accurate plasma-kinetic "particle-in-cell" (with the total of $10^8$ particles) parallel code OSIRIS has been used. Our simulations show: (i) the generation of long-lived near-equipartition (electro)magnetic fields, (ii)… ▽ More

Nuclear reaction rates and energy in stellar plasmas : The effect of highly damped modes
Abstract: The effects of the highly damped modes in the energy and reaction rates in a plasma are discussed. These modes, with wavenumbers $k \gg k_{D}$, even being only weakly excited, with less than $k_{B}T$ per mode, make a significant contribution to the energy and screening in a plasma. When the de Broglie wavelength is much less than the distance of closest approach of thermal electrons, a classical… ▽ More

Comment on "Ponderomotive force due to neutrinos"
Abstract: The derivation of the ponderomotive force due to neutrinos by Hardy and Melrose, Phys.Rev.D v.54, p.6491 (1996) is based on a flawed analysis of the ponderomotive force concept. Their conclusions also contain an erroneous physical assumption related to the neutrino emission in supernovae. A correct analysis shows the importance of the ponderomotive force due to neutrinos in type II supernovae ex… ▽ More

Ponderomotive force of quasi-particles in a plasma
Abstract: We derive the force exerted in the background plasma by an arbitrary distribution of non interacting quasi-particles, corresponding to either collective excitations of the plasma (plasmons, phonons) or em dressed particles (photons, neutrinos). Our approach is based on the effective Hamiltonian describing the quasi-classical dynamics of the individual particles in the presence of a background me… ▽ More
