In computational pathology, extracting spatial features from gigapixel whole slide images (WSIs) is a fundamental task, but due to their large size, WSIs are typically segmented into smaller tiles. A critical aspect of this analysis is aggregating information from these tiles to make predictions at the WSI level. We introduce a model that combines a message-passing graph neural network (GNN) with a state space model (Mamba) to capture both local and global spatial relationships among the tiles in WSIs. The model's effectiveness was demonstrated in predicting progression-free survival among patients with early-stage lung adenocarcinomas (LUAD). We compared the model with other state-of-the-art methods for tile-level information aggregation in WSIs, including tile-level information summary statistics-based aggregation, multiple instance learning (MIL)-based aggregation, GNN-based aggregation, and GNN-transformer-based aggregation. Additional experiments showed the impact of different types of node features and different tile sampling strategies on the model performance. This work can be easily extended to any WSI-based analysis. Code: https://github.com/rina-ding/gat-mamba.

The growing interaction between traditional knowledge and formal sciences emerges as a relevant field of research. In this perspective, the aim of this article is to investigate the intersections between Physics and traditional knowledge in the ceramics practices of Vila Cuera, in Bragança, state of Para. Using an ethnographic approach, complemented by qualitative analysis, we realize that ceramists use their sensitive intuition and, masterfully, apply thermodynamic principles in the production of handmade ceramics. The results highlight the value of Ethnophysics, underlining that, long before the formal structuring of science as we know it, traditional societies already practiced and understood natural phenomena in tune with contemporary physical principles. We conclude that there is an inherent link between Physics and traditional knowledge with regard to the traditional ceramics practice, grounded on empirical observations and ancestral wisdom, that dialogues with science in a complementary relationship. The study highlights the importance of valuing and recognizing the knowledge of traditional populations by highlighting the knowledge doings of cultures and institutionalized science.

In 1982, Berge defined the class of $α$-diperfect digraphs. A digraph $D$ is $α$-diperfect if for every maximum stable set $S$ of $D$ there is a path partition $\mathcal{P}$ of $D$ orthogonal to $S$ and this property holds for every induced subdigraph of $D$. An anti-directed odd cycle is an orientation of an odd cycle $(x_0,\ldots,x_{2k},x_0)$ with $k\geq2$ in which each vertex $x_0,x_1,x_2,x_3,x_5,x_7\ldots,x_{2k-1}$ is either a source or a sink. Berge conjectured that a digraph $D$ is $α$-diperfect if and only if $D$ does not contain an anti-directed odd cycle as an induced subdigraph. In this paper, we show that this conjecture is false by exhibiting an infinite family of orientations of complements of odd cycles with at least seven vertices that are not $α$-diperfect.

A new kind of duality has been proposed by Carr related to the quantum description of black holes, the so-called Compton/Schwarzschild duality \cite{Carr:2015nqa}. In this context, a new form for a Generalized Uncertainty Principle has arisen, which must bring us an interesting new route to a quantum description of spacetime. In the present paper, we shall investigate the consequences of the Compton/Schwarzschild duality to black hole entropy. The results found out reinforce an interesting perspective on the relationship between black holes and quantum information theory that has been recently proposed in the literature: that black hole entropy can assume negative values at the final stage of black hole evaporation. Consequently, in the context of the quantum corrections to gravity proposed by the Compton/Schwarschild duality, the final state of a black hole might correspond to a quantum entangled state, in the place of a remnant.

In the context of a nonequilibrium statistical thermodynamics, based on a nonequilibrium statistical ensemble formalism, a generalized hydrodynamics of fluids under driven flow and shear stress is derived. At the thermodynamic level, the nonequilibrium equations of state are derived, which are coupled to the evolution of the basic variables that describe the hydrodynamic motion in such a system. Generalized diffusion-advection and Maxwell-Cattaneo advection equations are obtained in appropriate limiting situations. This nonlinear higher-order hydrodynamics is applied, in an illustration, to the case of a dilute solution of Brownian particles in nonequilibrium conditions and flowing in a solvent acting as a thermal bath. This is done in the framework of such generalized hydrodynamics but truncated up to a second order.

Here, we discuss this theorem from several perspectives and derive a proof for radially symmetric potentials valid in $D$ dimensions. We find that this universality property holds under a quite mild condition on $V$, with or without bounded states, and extends to thermal states. Moreover, it leads to an interesting analogy between Anderson's orthogonality catastrophe and first-order quantum phase transitions.

Predicting the final ischaemic stroke lesion provides crucial information regarding the volume of salvageable hypoperfused tissue, which helps physicians in the difficult decision-making process of treatment planning and intervention. Treatment selection is influenced by clinical diagnosis, which requires delineating the stroke lesion, as well as characterising cerebral blood flow dynamics using neuroimaging acquisitions. Nonetheless, predicting the final stroke lesion is an intricate task, due to the variability in lesion size, shape, location and the underlying cerebral haemodynamic processes that occur after the ischaemic stroke takes place. Moreover, since elapsed time between stroke and treatment is related to the loss of brain tissue, assessing and predicting the final stroke lesion needs to be performed in a short period of time, which makes the task even more complex. Therefore, there is a need for automatic methods that predict the final stroke lesion and support physicians in the treatment decision process. We propose a fully automatic deep learning method based on unsupervised and supervised learning to predict the final stroke lesion after 90 days. Our aim is to predict the final stroke lesion location and extent, taking into account the underlying cerebral blood flow dynamics that can influence the prediction. To achieve this, we propose a two-branch Restricted Boltzmann Machine, which provides specialized data-driven features from different sets of standard parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging maps. These data-driven feature maps are then combined with the parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging maps, and fed to a Convolutional and Recurrent Neural Network architecture. We evaluated our proposal on the publicly available ISLES 2017 testing dataset, reaching a Dice score of 0.38, Hausdorff Distance of 29.21 mm, and Average Symmetric Surface Distance of 5.52 mm.

Electric motors can be damaged or operate improperly from a possible set of failures. Such failures are related to high or very low voltage and current levels, phase loss or blocked rotor. Therefore, it is important to protect these equipments through appropriate mechanisms. Alternatively, a workbench can simulate detectable failures related to the engines, allowing to change parameters, in which maintenance operators are able to identify the results of these changes. This work presents the development of a workbench as a tool for testing electrical machines and drives. The workbench is based on the Arduino programming platform (microcontroller system), in which it checks the functioning of electric motors under the condition of failures that may occur in this engine. Motor protections are carried out through an Intelligent Electronic Device (IED), which are popularly known as intelligent relays. The results show the development of a workbench that can test and identify several faults in a small three-phase motor.

Fully Convolutional Networks have been achieving remarkable results in image semantic segmentation, while being efficient. Such efficiency results from the capability of segmenting several voxels in a single forward pass. So, there is a direct spatial correspondence between a unit in a feature map and the voxel in the same location. In a convolutional layer, the kernel spans over all channels and extracts information from them. We observe that linear recombination of feature maps by increasing the number of channels followed by compression may enhance their discriminative power. Moreover, not all feature maps have the same relevance for the classes being predicted. In order to learn the inter-channel relationships and recalibrate the channels to suppress the less relevant ones, Squeeze and Excitation blocks were proposed in the context of image classification with Convolutional Neural Networks. However, this is not well adapted for segmentation with Fully Convolutional Networks since they segment several objects simultaneously, hence a feature map may contain relevant information only in some locations. In this paper, we propose recombination of features and a spatially adaptive recalibration block that is adapted for semantic segmentation with Fully Convolutional Networks - the SegSE block. Feature maps are recalibrated by considering the cross-channel information together with spatial relevance. Experimental results indicate that Recombination and Recalibration improve the results of a competitive baseline, and generalize across three different problems: brain tumor segmentation, stroke penumbra estimation, and ischemic stroke lesion outcome prediction. The obtained results are competitive or outperform the state of the art in the three applications.

We present an investigation of the mode of road transport in Brazil combining tools of complex networks and real-data. Our analysis involves a data-set based on the service routes inscribed on the Brazilian Transport Agency database. Although connectivity distributions of road networks worldwide are usually claimed as described by a power-law fashion, we report a better fit for the Brazilian case offered by the q-Weibull distribution. In our approach nodes assume the role of localities, whereas links represent service routes among them. Interestingly, a rapid drop takes place on the tail of the data distribution for a particular range of the number of outgoing connections. The mechanism responsible for driving this drop is revealed by investigating the spectral centrality of the network and different patterns of disassortative mixture, for both incoming and outgoing distributions. Besides a discussion about a power law description, we report a contrast with two different distributions. They are interpolated by the q-Weibull one: the Weibull and the q-exponential distributions. Moreover, we study the reciprocity of this network, which reflects the influence of mutual links over dynamical processes. This kind of analysis is indispensable for studies on human mobility, ship**, and a multi-modal perspective.

In a commonly-used version of the Simple Assembly Line Balancing Problem (SALBP-1) tasks are assigned to stations along an assembly line with a fixed cycle time in order to minimize the required number of stations. It has traditionally been assumed that the total work needed for each product unit has been partitioned into economically indivisible tasks. However, in practice, it is sometimes possible to divide particular tasks in limited ways at additional time penalty cost. Despite the penalties, task division where possible, now and then leads to a reduction in the minimum number of stations. Deciding which allowable tasks to divide creates a new assembly line balancing problem, TDALBP (Task Division Assembly Line Balancing Problem). We propose a mathematical model of the TDALBP, an exact solution procedure for it and present promising computational results for the adaptation of some classical SALBP instances from the research literature. The results demonstrate that the TDALBP sometimes has the potential to significantly improve assembly line performance.

Hydrodynamics, a term apparently introduced by Daniel Bernoulli (1700-1783) to comprise hydrostatic and hydraulics, has a long history with several theoretical approaches. Here, after a descriptive introduction, we present so-called mesoscopic hydro-thermodynamics, which is also referred to as higher-order generalized hydrodynamics, built within the framework of a mechanical-statistical formalism. It consists of a description of the material and heat motion of fluids in terms of the corresponding densities and their associated fluxes of all orders. In this way, movements are characterized in terms of intermediate to short wavelengths and intermediate to high frequencies. The fluxes have associated Maxwell-like times, which play an important role in determining the appropriate contraction of the description (of the enormous set of fluxes of all orders) necessary to address the characterization of the motion in each experimental setup. The retinal vascular condition is a reliable biomarker of several ophthalmologic and cardiovascular diseases, so automatic vessel segmentation may be crucial to diagnose and monitor them. In this paper, we propose a novel method that combines the multiscale analysis provided by the Stationary Wavelet Transform with a multiscale Fully Convolutional Neural Network to cope with the varying width and direction of the vessel structure in the retina. Our proposal uses rotation operations as the basis of a joint strategy for both data augmentation and prediction, which allows us to explore the information learned during training to refine the segmentation. The method was evaluated on three publicly available databases, achieving an average accuracy of 0.9576, 0.9694, and 0.9653, and average area under the ROC curve of 0.9821, 0.9905, and 0.9855 on the DRIVE, STARE, and CHASE_DB1 databases, respectively. It also appears to be robust to the training set and to the inter-rater variability, which shows its potential for real-world applications.

In this work, a novel artificial viscosity method is proposed using smooth and compactly supported viscosities. These are derived by revisiting the widely used piecewise constant artificial viscosity method of Persson and Peraire as well as the piecewise linear refinement of Klöckner et al. with respect to the fundamental design criteria of conservation and entropy stability. Further investigating the method of modal filtering in the process, it is demonstrated that this strategy has inherent shortcomings, which are related to problems of Legendre viscosities to handle shocks near element boundaries. This problem is overcome by introducing certain functions from the fields of robust reprojection and mollififers as viscosity distributions. To the best of our knowledge, this is proposed for the first time in this work. The resulting $C_0^\infty$ artificial viscosity method is demonstrated to provide sharper profiles, steeper gradients and a higher resolution of small-scale features while still maintaining stability of the method.

Glioblastoma Multiforme is a high grade, very aggressive, brain tumor, with patients having a poor prognosis. Lower grade gliomas are less aggressive, but they can evolve into higher grade tumors over time. Patient management and treatment can vary considerably with tumor grade, ranging from tumor resection followed by a combined radio- and chemotherapy to a "wait and see" approach. Hence, tumor grading is important for adequate treatment planning and monitoring. The gold standard for tumor grading relies on histopathological diagnosis of biopsy specimens. However, this procedure is invasive, time consuming, and prone to sampling error. Given these disadvantages, automatic tumor grading from widely used MRI protocols would be clinically important, as a way to expedite treatment planning and assessment of tumor evolution. In this paper, we propose to use Convolutional Neural Networks for predicting tumor grade directly from imaging data. In this way, we overcome the need for expert annotations of regions of interest. We evaluate two prediction approaches: from the whole brain, and from an automatically defined tumor region. Finally, we employ interpretability methodologies as a quality assurance stage to check if the method is using image regions indicative of tumor grade for classification.

Stroke is the second most common cause of death in developed countries, where rapid clinical intervention can have a major impact on a patient's life. To perform the revascularization procedure, the decision making of physicians considers its risks and benefits based on multi-modal MRI and clinical experience. Therefore, automatic prediction of the ischemic stroke lesion outcome has the potential to assist the physician towards a better stroke assessment and information about tissue outcome. Typically, automatic methods consider the information of the standard kinetic models of diffusion and perfusion MRI (e.g. Tmax, TTP, MTT, rCBF, rCBV) to perform lesion outcome prediction. In this work, we propose a deep learning method to fuse this information with an automated data selection of the raw 4D PWI image information, followed by a data-driven deep-learning modeling of the underlying blood flow hemodynamics. We demonstrate the ability of the proposed approach to improve prediction of tissue at risk before therapy, as compared to only using the standard clinical perfusion maps, hence suggesting on the potential benefits of the proposed data-driven raw perfusion data modelling approach.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been successfully used for brain tumor segmentation, specifically, fully convolutional networks (FCNs). FCNs can segment a set of voxels at once, having a direct spatial correspondence between units in feature maps (FMs) at a given location and the corresponding classified voxels. In convolutional layers, FMs are merged to create new FMs, so, channel combination is crucial. However, not all FMs have the same relevance for a given class. Recently, in classification problems, Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) blocks have been proposed to re-calibrate FMs as a whole, and suppress the less informative ones. However, this is not optimal in FCN due to the spatial correspondence between units and voxels. In this article, we propose feature recombination through linear expansion and compression to create more complex features for semantic segmentation. Additionally, we propose a segmentation SE (SegSE) block for feature recalibration that collects contextual information, while maintaining the spatial meaning. Finally, we evaluate the proposed methods in brain tumor segmentation, using publicly available data.

Abstract:
In this letter, we demonstrate that Loop Quantum Cosmology equations, with a near vanishing late time cosmological constant, can be induced on a brane in a Randall-Sundrum II scenario, corresponding to the holographic dual of a strongly coupled string regime in the bulk. Such results can establish a possible connection between Loop Quantum Gravity and string theory.

One proposal by Verlinde \cite{Verlinde:2010hp} is that gravity is not a fundamental, but an entropic force. In this way, Verlinde has provide us with a way to derive the Newton's law of gravitation from the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy-area formula. On the other hand, since it has been demonstrated that this formula is susceptible to quantum gravity corrections, one may hope that these corrections could be inherited by the Newton's law. In this way, the entropic interpretation of Newton's law could be a prolific way in order to get verifiable or falsifiable quantum corrections to ordinary gravity in an observationally accessible regimes. Loop quantum gravity is a theory that provide a way to approach the quantum properties of spacetime. From this theory, emerges a quantum corrected semiclassical black hole solution called loop quantum black holes or self-dual black holes. Among the interesting features of loop quantum black holes is the fact that they give rise to a modified entropy-area relation where quantum gravity corrections are present. In this work, we obtain the quantum corrected Newton's law from the entropy-area relation given by loop quantum black holes. In order to relate our results with the recent experimental activity, we consider the quantum mechanical properties of a huge gravitational atom consisting in a light neutral elementary particle in the presence of a loop quantum black hole.

Among these situations, the spacetime behavior near the Big Bang or black hole's singularity. The detection of gravitational waves, on the other hand, has opened the way to new perspectives in the investigation of the spacetime structure. In this work, by the use of a WKB method introduced by Schutz and Will \cite{Schutz:1985zz}, and after improved by Iyer and Will \cite{s.iyer-prd35}, we study the gravitational wave spectrum emitted by loop quantum black holes, which correspond to a quantized version of the Schwarzschild spacetime by LQG techniques. From the results obtained, loop quantum black holes have been shown stable under axial gravitational perturbations.

This is done in the framework of a HOGH build within a statistical foundation in terms of a Non-Equilibrium Statistical Ensemble Formalism. It consists in a description in terms of the densities of particles and energy and their fluxes of all orders, with the motion described by a set of coupled nonlinear integro-differential equations involving them. These Maxwell Times have a fundamental role in determining the type of hydrodynamic motion that the system would display in the given condition and constraints. The different types of motion are well described by contractions of the full description done in terms of a reduced number of fluxes up to a certain order.

Following this argument, Friedmann equations can be derived by using Clausius relation to the apparent horizon of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe. Loop Quantum Gravity is a propose to description of the spacetime behavior in situations where its atomic characteristic arises. Among these situations, the behavior of our universe near the Big Bang singularity is described by Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC). However, a derivation of the LQC equations based on the Bekenstein bound is lacking. In this work, we obtain the quantum corrected Friedmann equations from the entropy-area relation given by loop quantum black holes (LQBH), setting a still absent connection between holographic and LQC descriptions of the cosmos. Connections with braneworld cosmology have been also addressed.

This model produces an AdS scenario where the components of the energy momentum tensor are finite and have its positivity ensured by a suitable choice of the bounce configurations. In the present work, we study the issue of gauge and fermion field localization in this scenario. In contrast with the five dimensional case here the gauge field is localized without the dilaton contribution. Nevertheless, it is remarkable that the localization of the fermion field depends on the introduction of a minimal coupling with the angular component of the gauge field, which differs clearly from five dimensional scenarios. Furthermore, we perform a qualitative analysis of the fermionic massive modes and conclude that only left handed fermions could be localized in the brane.

A generalized Hydrodynamics, referred to as Mesoscopic Hydro-Thermodynamics, of phonons in semiconductors is presented. It involves the descriptions of the motion of the quasi-particle density and of the energy density. The hydrodynamic equations, which couple both types of movement via thermo-elastic processes, are derived starting with a generalized Peierls-Boltzmann kinetic equation obtained in the framework of a Non-Equilibrium Statistical Ensemble Formalism, providing such a Mesoscopic Hydro-Thermodynamics. The case of a contraction in first order relevant variables is worked out in detail. The associated Maxwell times are derived and discussed. The densities of quasi-particles and of energy are found to satisfy coupled Maxwell-Cattaneo-like hyperbolic equations. The analysis of thermo-elastic effects is done and applied to investigate thermal distortion in silicon mirrors under incidence of high intensity X-ray pulses in free electron laser (FEL) facilities. The derivation of a generalized Guyer-Krumhansl equation governing the flux of heat and the associated conductivity coefficient is also presented.

Construction, in the framework of a Nonequilibrium Statistical Ensemble Formalism, of a Mesoscopic Hydro-Thermodynamics, that is, covering phenomena involving motion displaying variations short in space and fast in time -unrestricted values of Knudsen numbers-, is presented. In that way, it is provided an approach enabling for the coupling and simultaneous treatment of the kinetics and hydrodynamic levels of descriptions. It is based on a complete thermo-statistical approach in terms of the densities of matter and energy and their fluxes of all orders covering systems arbitrarily driven away from equilibrium. The set of coupled nonlinear integro-differential hydrodynamic equations is derived. They are the evolution equations of the Grad-like moments of all orders, derived from a kinetic equation built in the framework of the Nonequilibrium Statistical Ensemble Formalism. For illustration, the case of a system of particles embedded in a fluid acting as a thermal bath is fully described. The resulting enormous set of coupled evolution equations is of unmanageable proportions, thus requiring in practice to introduce an appropriate description using the smallest possible number of variables. We have obtained a hierarchy of Maxwell-times, which can be considered a kind of Bogoliubov's characteristic times in hydrodynamics and which have a particular relevance in the creteria for stablishing a contraction of description.

Brane world six dimensional scenarios with string like metric has been proposed to alleviate the problem of field localization. However, these models have been suffering from some drawbacks related with energy conditions as well as from difficulties to find analytical solutions. In this work, we propose a model where a brane is made of a scalar field with bounce-type configurations and embedded in a bulk with a string-like metric. This model produces a sound AdS scenario where none of the important physical quantities is infinite. Among these quantities are the components of the energy momentum tensor, which have its positivity ensured by a suitable choice of the bounce configurations. Another advantage of this model is that the warp factor can be obtained analytically from the equations of motion for the scalar field, obtaining as a result a thick brane configuration, in a six dimensional context. Moreover, the study of the scalar field localization in these scenario is done.

We argue that a process where a fuzzy space splits in two others can be used to explain the origin of the black hole entropy, and why a "generalized second law of thermodynamics" appears to hold in the presence of black holes. We reach the Bekenstein-Hawking formula from the count of the microstates of a black hole modeled by a fuzzy space. In this approach, a discrete area spectrum for the black hole, which becomes increasingly spaced as the black hole approaches the Planck scale, is obtained. We show that, as a consequence of this, the black hole radiation becomes less and less entropic as the black hole evaporates, in a way that some information about its initial state could be recovered.
