The spread of microbial infections is governed by the self-organization of bacteria on surfaces. Limitations of live imaging techniques make collective behaviors in clinically relevant systems challenging to quantify. Here, novel experimental and image analysis techniques for high-fidelity single-cell segmentation of bacterial colonies are developed. Machine learning-based segmentation models are trained solely using synthetic microscopy images that are processed to look realistic using state-of-the-art image-to-image translation methods, requiring no biophysical modeling. Accurate single-cell segmentation is achieved for densely packed single-species colonies and multi-species colonies of common pathogenic bacteria, even under suboptimal imaging conditions and for both brightfield and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The resulting data provide quantitative insights into the self-organization of bacteria on soft surfaces. Thanks to their high adaptability and relatively simple implementation, these methods promise to greatly facilitate quantitative descriptions of bacterial infections in varied environments.

The life course perspective in criminology has become prominent last years, offering valuable insights into various patterns of criminal offending and pathways. The study of criminal trajectories aims to understand the beginning, persistence and desistence in crime, providing intriguing explanations about these moments in life. Central to this analysis is the identification of patterns in the frequency of criminal victimization and recidivism, along with the factors that contribute to them. Specifically, this work introduces a new class of models that overcome limitations in traditional methods used to analyze criminal recidivism. These models are designed for recurrent events data characterized by excess of zeros and spatial correlation. They extend the Non-Homogeneous Poisson Process, incorporating spatial dependence in the model through random effects, enabling the analysis of associations among individuals within the same spatial stratum. To deal with the excess of zeros in the data, a zero-inflated Poisson mixed model was incorporated. In addition to parametric models following the Power Law process for baseline intensity functions, we propose flexible semi-parametric versions approximating the intensity function using Bernstein Polynomials. The Bayesian approach offers advantages such as incorporating external evidence and modeling specific correlations between random effects and observed data. The performance of these models was evaluated in a simulation study with various scenarios, and we applied them to analyze criminal recidivism data in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The results provide a detailed analysis of high-risk areas for recurrent crimes and the behavior of recidivism rates over time. This research significantly enhances our understanding of criminal trajectories, paving the way for more effective strategies in combating criminal recidivism.

Sparse Code Multiple Access (SCMA) has been recently proposed for the future generation of wireless communication standards. SCMA system design involves specifying several parameters. In order to simplify the procedure, most works consider a multistage design approach. Two main stages are usually emphasized in these methods: sparse signatures design (equivalently, resource allocation) and codebook design. In this paper, we present a novel SCMA codebook design method. The proposed method considers SCMA codebooks structured with an underlying vector space obtained from classical block codes. In particular, when using maximum distance separable (MDS) codes, our proposed design provides maximum signal-space diversity with a relatively small alphabet. The use of small alphabets also helps to maintain desired properties in the codebooks, such as low peak-to-average power ratio and low-complexity detection.

Robust time series analysis is an important subject in statistical modeling. Models based on Gaussian distribution are sensitive to outliers, which may imply in a significant degradation in estimation performance as well as in prediction accuracy. State-space models, also referred as Dynamic Models, is a very useful way to describe the evolution of a time series variable through a structured latent evolution system. Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation (INLA) is a recent approach proposed to perform fast Bayesian inference in Latent Gaussian Models which naturally comprises Dynamic Models. We present how to perform fast and accurate non-Gaussian dynamic modeling with INLA and show how these models can provide a more robust time series analysis when compared with standard dynamic models based on Gaussian distributions. We formalize the framework used to fit complex non-Gaussian space-state models using the R package INLA and illustrate our approach in both a simulation study and on the brazilian homicide rate dataset.

We consider certain boundary conditions supporting soliton solutions in the generalized non-linear Schrödinger equation (AKNS$_r$)\,($r=1,2$). Using the dressing transformation (DT) method and the related tau functions we study the AKNS$_{r}$ system for the vanishing, (constant) non-vanishing and the mixed boundary conditions, and their associated bright, dark, and bright-dark N-soliton solutions, respectively. Moreover, we introduce a modified DT related to the dressing group in order to consider the free field boundary condition and derive generalized N-dark-dark solitons. As a reduced submodel of the AKNS$_r$ system we study the properties of the focusing, defocusing and mixed focusing-defocusing versions of the so-called coupled non-linear Schrödinger equation ($r-$CNLS), which has recently been considered in many physical applications. We have shown that two$-$dark$-$dark$-$soliton bound states exist in the AKNS$_2$ system, and three$-$ and higher$-$dark$-$dark$-$soliton bound states can not exist. The AKNS$_r$\,($r\geq 3$) extension is briefly discussed in this approach. The properties and calculations of some matrix elements using level one vertex operators are outlined.

We consider non-vanishing boundary conditions (NVBC) for the NLS model [6,7,27] in the context of the hybrid dressing transformation and $τ$-function approach. In order to write the NLS model in a suitable form to deal with non-vanishing boundary conditions it is introduced a new spectral parameter in such a way that the usual NLS parameter will depend on the affine parameter through the so-called Zukowsky function. In the context of the dressing transformation the introduction of the affine parameter avoids the construction of certain Riemann sheets for the usual NLS spectral parameter. In this way one introduces a Lax pair defined for the new spectral parameter and the relevant NVBC NLS $τ$ functions are obtained by the dressing transformation method. We construct the one and two dark-soliton solutions explicitly.

Here we show that by introducing a generator coordinate in the Kohn-Sham equation of density-functional theory, excitation energies can be obtained from ground-state density functionals. As a viability test, the method is applied to ground-state energies and various types of excited-state energies of atoms and ions from the He and the Li isoelectronic series. Results are compared to a variety of alternative DFT-based approaches to excited states, in particular time-dependent density-functional theory with exact and approximate potentials.

The generator coordinate (GC) method is a variational approach to the quantum many-body problem in which interacting many-body wave functions are constructed as superpositions of (generally nonorthogonal) eigenstates of auxiliary Hamiltonians containing a deformation parameter. This paper presents a time-dependent extension of the GC method as a new approach to improve existing approximations of the exchange-correlation (XC) potential in time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT). The time-dependent GC method is shown to be a conceptually and computationally simple tool to build memory effects into any existing adiabatic XC potential. As an illustration, the method is applied to driven parametric oscillations of two interacting electrons in a harmonic potential (Hooke's atom). It is demonstrated that a proper choice of time-dependent generator coordinates in conjunction with the adiabatic local-density approximation reproduces the exact linear and nonlinear two-electron dynamics quite accurately, including features associated with double excitations that cannot be captured by TDDFT in the adiabatic approximation.

The derivative discontinuity of the exchange-correlation functional of density-functional theory is cast as the difference of two types of electron affinities. We show that standard Kohn-Sham calculations can be used to calculate both affinities, and that their difference benefits from substantial and systematic error cancellations, permitting reliable estimates of the derivative discontinuity. Numerical calculations for atoms and molecules show that the discontinuity is quite large (typically several eV), and significantly and consistently improves the agreement of the calculated fundamental energy gap with the experimental gaps. The percentage error of the single-particle gap is reduced in favorable cases by more than one order of magnitude, and even in unfavorable cases by about a factor of two.

Current-density-functional theory is used to perturbatively calculate single-particle energies of open-shell atoms prepared in a current-carrying state. We focus on the highest occupied such energy, because its negative is, in principle, the exact ionization energy. A variety of different density functionals and calculational schemes are compared with each other and experiment. When the atom is prepared in a current-carrying state, a current-dependent exchange-correlation functional is found to slightly lower the single-particle energy of the current-carrying orbital, as compared to a calculation using standard (current independent) density functionals for the same system. The current-dependent terms in the exchange-correlation functional thus provide additional stabilization of the current-carrying state.
