Sm-doped BiFeO3 compacted powders with composition across the morphotropic phase boundary region were prepared by sol-gel method. Crystal structure, morphology and magnetic state of the compounds were analyzed as a function of dopant concentration, temperature and external pressure using synchrotron and laboratory X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, Raman and Mossbauer spectroscopy. Application of external pressure shifts the phase transition from the rhombohedral structure to the nonpolar orthorhombic structure towards lower concentration of the dopant content, wherein the amount of the anti-polar orthorhombic phase notably decreases. Raman and Mossbauer spectroscopy data provides additional information about the structural distortion on local scale level which testifies faster formation of nonpolar orthorhombic phase and associated modification in the magnetic state in the compounds subjected to high pressure. Temperature increase leads to the structural transition to the nonpolar orthorhombic phase regardless the structural state at room temperature; furthermore, application of external pressure decreases the phase transition temperature.

A correlation between the crystal structure and magnetic properties of system (1-x)BiFeO$_3$-(x)BaTiO$_3$ with compounds across the morphotropic phase boundary was studied using X-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetometry, and Mossbauer spectroscopy measurements. Increase in the dopants content leads to the structural transition from the rhombohedral phase to the cubic phase via a formation of the two-phase region (0.2 < x < 0.33), wherein the magnetic structure changes from the modulated G-type antiferromagnetic to the collinear antiferromagnetic via a stabilization of the non-collinear antiferromagnetic phase with non-zero remanent magnetization. The value of magnetic moment calculated per iron ion based on the Mossbauer and neutron diffraction data decreases from m = 4.4 mB for the compound with x=0.25 to m=3.2 mB for the compound with x=0.35 testifying a dominance of 3+ oxidation state of the iron ions. Increase in the amount of the cubic phase leads to a reduction in the remanent magnetization from 0.02 emu.g for the compounds with the dominant rhombohedral phase (x < 0.27) down to about 0.001 emu/g for the compounds with dominant cubic structure (x >= 0.27). Rapid decrease in the remanent magnetization observed in the compounds across the phase coexistence region points at no direct correlation between the type of structural distortion and non-zero remanent magnetization, while the oxygen octahedra tilting is the key factor determining the presence of non-zero remanent magnetization.

Samarium substituted bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) ceramics prepared by sol-gel synthesis method were studied using both local scale and microscopic measurement techniques in order to clarify an evolution of the crystal structure of the compounds across the morphotropic phase boundary region. X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission and scanning electron microscopies, XPS, EDS/EDX experiments and piezoresponse force microscopy were used to study the structural transitions from the polar active rhombohedral phase to the anti-polar orthorhombic phase and then to the non-polar orthorhombic phase, observed in the Bi1-xSmxFeO3 compounds within the concentration range of 0.08 < x < 0.2. The results obtained by microscopic techniques testify that the compounds in the range of 0.12 < x < 0.15 are characterized by two phase structural state formed by a coexistence of the rhombohedral and the anti-polar orthorhombic phases; two phase structural state observed in the compounds with 0.15 < x < 0.18 is associated with a coexistence of the anti-polar orthorhombic and the non-polar orthorhombic phases. Local scale measurements have revealed a notable difference in the concentration range ascribed to the morphotropic phase boundary estimated by microscopic measurements, the obtained results testify a wider concentration range ascribed to a coexistence of different structural phases, the background of the mentioned difference is discussed.

The physical nature of the ferroelectric (FE), ferrielectric (FEI) and antiferroelectric (AFE) phases, their coexistence and spatial distributions underpin the functionality of antiferrodistortive (AFD) multiferroics in the vicinity of morphotropic phase transitions. Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) phenomenology and a semi-microscopic four sublattice model (FSM), we explore the behavior of different AFE, FEI and FE long-range orderings and their coexistence at the morphotropic phase boundaries in FE-AFE-AFD multiferroics. These theoretical predictions are compared with the experimental observations for dense Bi1-yRyFeO3 ceramics, where R is Sm or La atoms with the fraction 0 < y< 0.25, as confirmed by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM). These complementary measurements were used to study the macroscopic and nanoscopic transformation of the crystal structure with the do**. The comparison of the measured and calculated AFE/FE phase fractions demonstrate that the LGD-FSM approach well describes the experimental results obtained by XRD and PFM for Bi1-yRyFeO3. Hence, this combined theoretical and experimental approach provides further insight into the origin of the morphotropic boundaries and coexisting FE and AFE states in model rare-earth doped multiferroics.

Single phase barium titanate-bismuth ferrite ((1-x)BaTi$_3$-(x)BiFe$_3$, BTO-BFO) solid solutions were prepared using citric acid and ethylene glycol assisted sol-gel synthesis method. Depending on the dopant content the samples are characterized by tetragonal, tetragonal-pseudocubic, pseudocubic and rhombohedral structure as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and XRD measurements. An increase of the BFO content leads to a reduction in the cell parameters accompanied by a decrease in polar distortion of the unit cell wherein an average particle size increases from 60 up to 350 nm. Non zero piezoresponse was observed in the compounds with pseudocubic structure while no polar distortion was detected in their crystal structure using X-ray diffraction method. The origin of the observed non-negligible piezoresponse was discussed assuming a coexistence of nanoscale polar and non-polar phases attributed to the solid solutions with high BFO content. A coexistence of the nanoscale regions having polar and non-polar character is considered as a key factor to increase macroscopic piezoresponse in the related compounds due to increased mobility of the domain walls and phase boundaries.

Magnetization measurements along with the structural data were used to determine a correlation between magnetic properties and crystal structure of the compounds. The compounds with from x 0.1-0.2 are characterized by the sequence of the structural transitions driven by the dopant increase, from the polar rhombohedral phase to the non-polar orthorhombic phase via two-phase regions characterized by the presence of the anti-polar orthorhombic phase. The compounds having single-phase rhombohedral structure are characterized by a release of remnant magnetization as compared to ceramics with similar chemical compositions but synthesized by the solid-state reaction method and having microscopic size crystallites. A correlation between the type of structural distortion, morphology of crystallites and an onset of remnant magnetization is discussed highlighting a difference in the evolution of crystal structure and magnetization observed for the Sm-doped ceramics prepared by modified sol-gel method and conventional solid-state reaction technique.

Using derived analytical expressions for the energies of various defect-ordered states, we calculated and analyzed phase diagrams dependence on the film-substrate mismatch strain, concentration of defects, and Vegard coefficients. Obtained results open possibilities to create and control superstructures of ordered defects in thin oxide films by selecting the appropriate substrate and defect concentration.

Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory and effective medium approximation, we analytically calculate typical dependences of the pyroelectric and electrocaloric coefficients on external electric field, temperature and radius for spherical single-domain ferroelectric nanoparticles. The considered physical model corresponds to the nanocomposite with small fraction of ferroelectric nanoparticles. Within the framework of the analytical model we establish how the size changes determine the temperature and field behavior pyroelectric and electrocaloric coefficients on example of BaTiO3 nanoparticles covered by a semiconducting shell and placed in a dielectric polymer. We show that by changing the particle size one can induce maxima of the pyroelectric coefficient and electrocaloric temperature variation, control their width, height and sign. Obtained analytical expressions allow selecting the interval of particle sizes, voltage, and/or temperature for which pyroelectric energy conversion and electrocaloric coefficient are optimal for applications. The observed size effect opens the possibility to control pyroelectric and electrocaloric properties of ferroelectric nanocomposites that can be important for their advanced applications in energy convertors and cooling systems.

When the fraction of KBr is rather small (less than 15 wt percent) the magnetic response of the composite is very weak and similar to that observed for the BLFO (pure KBr matrix without Bi1-xLaxFeO3 has no magnetic response as anticipated). However, when the fraction of KBr increases above 15percent, the magnetic response of the composite changes substantially and the field dependence of magnetization reveals ferromagnetic-like hysteresis loop with a remanent magnetization about 0.14 emu/g and coercive field about 1.8 Tesla (at room temperature). Nothing similar to the ferromagnetic-like hysteresis loop can be observed in BLFO ceramics, which magnetization quasi linearly increases with magnetic field. Different physical mechanisms were considered to explain the unusual experimental results for BLFO-KBr nanocomposites, but only those among them, which are highly sensitive to the interaction of antiferromagnetic Bi0.9La0.1FeO3 with ionic conductor KBr, can be relevant. An appropriate mechanism turned out to be ferro-magneto-ionic coupling.

Ferroelectric interfaces are unique model objects for fundamental studies of polar surface properties such as versatile screening mechanisms of spontaneous polarization by free carriers and possible ion exchange with ambient media. The effect of ionic adsorption by electrically-open (i.e. non-electroded) ferroelectric surface on polarization reversal in the ferroelectric had been investigated experimentally and theoretically, however the effect influence on the temperature behaviour of polarization hysteresis remains unexplored. Also the comparative theoretical analysis of the ferroelectric hysteresis for linear and nonlinear electronic screenings, and strongly nonlinear ionic screening of the spontaneous polarization was absent. In this work we study the free energy relief of a thin ferroelectric film covered by a screening charge layer of different nature and ultra-thin gap separating the film surface from the top electrode and calculate hysteresis loops of polarization and screening charge at different temperatures in the considered system. The dependence of the screening charge density on electric potential was considered for three basic models, namely for the linear Bardeen-type model of electronic surface states (BS), nonlinear Fermi-Dirac (FD) density of states describing two-dimensional electron gas at the film-gap interface, and strongly nonlinear Stephenson-Highland (SH) model describing the surface charge density of absorbed ions by Langmuir adsorption isotherms. Appeared that BS, FD and SH screening charges, which properties are principally different, determine the free energy relief (including polarization values corresponding to the free energy minima at different applied voltages) and control the shape of polarization hysteresis loops at different temperatures.

Complementary we performed experiments for dense BiFeO3 ceramics, which revealed that the shift of antiferromagnetic transition to 690 K instead of 645 K for a single crystal. To explain theoretically the result, we consider the possibility to control antiferromagnetic state of multiferroic BiFeO3 via biquadratic antiferrodistortive rotomagnetic, rotoelectric, magnetostrictive and magnetoelectric couplings. According to our calculations the highest is the rotostriction contribution, the magnetostrictive and electrostriction contributions appeared smaller.

The special attention in paid to the appearance of the spatially modulated phases induced by the flexocoupling in condensed and soft matter. For advanced applications in modern industry it is very important to reduce the volume of ferroelectric nanoparticles without serious deterioration of their polar properties. In many practically important cases fixed volume (rather than fixed size) corresponds to realistic technological conditions of nanoparticles fabrication. The letter is focused on the theoretical study of the behavior of ferroelectric polarization, paramagnetoelectric coefficient and phase diagrams of semi-ellipsoidal nanoparticles with fixed volume V. Our approach combines the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire phenomenology, classical electrostatics and elasticity theory. Our results show that the size effects of the phase diagrams and polarization of semi-ellipsoidal BiFeO3 nanoparticles nontrivially depends on V. These findings provide a path to optimize the polar properties of nanoparticles by controlling their phase diagrams at a fixed volume.

Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) is one of the most promising multiferroics with a sufficiently high ferroelectric (FE) and antiferromagnetic transition temperatures, and magnetoelectric (ME) coupling coefficient at room temperature, and thus it is highly sensitive to the impact of cross-influence of applied electric and magnetic fields. According to the urgent demands of nanotechnology miniaturization for ultra-high density data storage in advanced nonvolatile memory cells, it is very important to reduce the sizes of multiferroic nanoparticles in the self-assembled arrays without serious deterioration of their properties. We study size effects of the phase diagrams, FE and ME properties of semi-ellipsoidal BiFeO3 nanoparticles clamped to a rigid conductive substrate. The spatial distribution of the spontaneous polarization vector inside the nanoparticles, phase diagrams and paramagnetoelectric (PME) coefficient were calculated in the framework of modified Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) approach. Analytical expressions were derived for the dependences of the FE transition temperature, average polarization, linear dielectric susceptibility and PME coefficient on the particle sizes for a general case of a semi-ellipsoidal nanoparticles with three different semi-axes a, b and height c. The analyses of the obtained results leads to the conclusion that the size effect of the phase diagrams, spontaneous polarization and PME coefficient is rather sensitive to the particle sizes aspect ratio in the polarization direction, and less sensitive to the absolute values of the sizes per se.

Flexocoupling impact on the size effects of the spontaneous polarization, effective piezo-response, elastic strain and compliance, carrier concentration and piezo-conductance have been calculated in thin films of ferroelectric semiconductors with mixed-type conductivity under applied pressure. Analysis of the self-consistent calculation results revealed that the thickness dependences of aforementioned physical quantities, calculated at zero and nonzero flexoelectric couplings, are very similar under zero applied pressure, but become strongly different under the application of external pressure pext. At that the differences become noticeably stronger for the film surface under compression than under tension. The impact of the Vegard mechanism on the size effects is weaker in comparison with flexocoupling except for the thickness dependence of the piezo-conductance. Without flexoelectric coupling the studied physical quantities manifest conventional peculiarities that are characteristic of the size-induced phase transitions. Namely, when the film thickness h approaches the critical thickness hcr the transition to paraelectric phase occurs. The combined effect of flexoelectric coupling and external pressure induces polarizations at the film surfaces, which cause the electric built-in field that destroys the thickness-induced phase transition to paraelectric phase at h= hcr and induces the electret-like state with irreversible spontaneous polarization at h<hcr. The built-in field leads to noticeable increase of the average strain and elastic compliance under the film thickness decrease below hcr that scales as 1/h at small thicknesses h. The changes of the electron concentration by several orders of magnitude under positive or negative pressures can lead to the occurrence of high- or low-conductivity states, i.e. the nonvolatile piezo-resistive switching.

In the framework of the thermodynamic approach Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) combined with the equations of electrostatics, we investigated the effect of polarization surface screening on finite size effects of the phase diagrams, polar and dielectric properties of ferroelectric nanoparticles of different shapes. We obtained and analyzed the analytical results for the dependences of the ferroelectric phase transition temperature, critical size, spontaneous polarization and thermodynamic coercive field on the shape and size of nanoparticles. The pronounced size effect of these characteristics on the scaling parameter, the ratio of the particle characteristic size to the length of the surface screening, was revealed. Also our modeling predicts a significant impact of the flexo-chemical effect (that is a joint action of flexoelectric effect and chemical pressure) on the temperature of phase transition, polar and dielectric properties of nanoparticles when their chemical composition deviates from the stoichiometric one. We showed on the example of the stoichiometric nanosized and fine SrBi2Ta2O9 particles that except the vicinity of the critical size, where the system splitting into domains has an important role, results of analytical calculation of the spontaneous polarization have little difference from the numerical ones. We revealed a strong impact of the flexo-chemical effect on the phase transition temperature, polar and dielectric properties of SryBi2+xTa2O9 nanoparticles when the ratio Sr/Bi deviates from the stoichiometric value of 0.5 from 0.35 to 0.65. From the analysis of experimental data we derived the parameters of the theory, namely coefficients of expansion of the LGD functional, contribution of flexo-chemical effect and the length of the surface screening.

Flexoelectric effect impact on the generalized susceptibility and soft phonons dispersion was not studied in the long-range ordered phases of ferroics. The gap in the knowledge motivated us to establish the impact of the flexocoupling on the correlation function of the long-range order parameter fluctuations in ferroelectric phase of ferroics with local disordering sources. Within Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach we obtained analytical expressions for the generalized susceptibility and phonon dispersion relations in the ferroelectric phase. Unexpectedly, the joint action of static and dynamic flexoelectric effect induces non-diagonal components of generalized susceptibility, which amplitude is proportional to the convolution of the spontaneous polarization with flexocoupling constants. The flexocoupling essentially broaden the k-spectrum of generalized susceptibility and so decreases the correlation radii, as well as leads to the additional "pushing away" of the optical and acoustic soft mode phonon branches. The contribution of spontaneous polarization via ferroelectric nonlinearity and electrostriction mechanisms can lead to both broadening and narrowing on the susceptibility k-spectrum. Due to the joint action of flexoelectric coupling and spontaneous polarization the degeneration of the transverse optic and acoustic modes disappears in the soft phonon spectrum in a ferroelectric phase in comparison with the spectra in a paraelectric phase. These effects have been studied quantitatively for ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate using realistic values of static and dynamic flexocouplings and cubic symmetry approximation for the elastic properties. Also we derived general expressions for correlation function for arbitrary symmetry, elastic and electrostrictive anisotropy.

Dynamic Electrochemical Strain Microscopy (ESM) response of mixed ionic-electronic conductors is analysed in the framework of the Thomas-Fermi screening theory and Vegard law with accounting of the steric effects. The emergence of dynamic charge waves and nonlinear deformation of the surface as result of applying probing voltage is numerically explored. 2D maps of the strain and concentration distribution across the mixed ionic-electronic conductor and bias-induced surface displacements for ESM microscopy were calculated. Obtained numerical results can be of applied to quantify ESM response of Li-based solid electroytes, materials with resistive switching and electroactive ferroelectric polymers, which are of potential interest for flexible and high-density non-volatile memory devices.
