The rotation of electron vortex beams (EVBs) presents a complex interplay of the Gouy phase characterizing free-space behavior and Landau states or Larmor rotation observed in magnetic fields. Despite being studied separately, these phenomena manifest within a single beam during its propagation in magnetic fields, lacking a comprehensive description. We address this by utilizing exact solutions of the relativistic paraxial equation in magnetic fields, termed "paraxial Landau modes". The paraxial Landau modes describe the quantum states of EVBs in magnetic fields. Our study of rotation angles demonstrates consistency with experimental data, supporting the practical presence of these modes. We provide a unified description of different regimes under generalized Gouy rotation, linking the Gouy phase to EVB rotation angles. This connection enhances our understanding of the Gouy phase and can be extended to nonuniform magnetic fields. Our theoretical analysis is validated through numerical simulations using the Chebyshev method. This work offers new insights into the dynamics of EVBs in magnetic fields and suggests practical applications in beam manipulation and beam optics of vortex particles.

It is shown that the covariance of Lagrangians always taking place results in a distortion of any electric and magnetic fields by a pseudoscalar field of axions and axion-like particles. As a result, electric and magnetic fields acquire oscillating magnetic and electric components, respectively. One can also use the equivalent approach based on an introduction of effective oscillating magnetic charges and electric dipole moments in undistorted electromagnetic fields. The determined relations between the magnetic charges and electric dipole moments and the axion-photon coupling constant open a possibility to compare a sensitivity of search for axions in optical experiments and experiments with massive particles. The inverse (dual) Witten effect defining effective magnetic charges of electrically charged particles opens new exciting possibilities to search for axions and axion-like particles with very small masses in nonresonance experiments. The study of a passage of strongly decelerated electrons or positrons through a solenoid is proposed.

The relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is used for an advanced description of planar graphene electrons in external fields and free (2+1)-space. It is shown that the initial Dirac equation should by based on the usual $(4\times4)$ Dirac matrices but not on the reduction of matrix dimensions and the use of $(2\times2)$ Pauli matrices. The latter approach does not agree with the experiment. The spin of graphene electrons is not the one-value spin and takes the values $\pm1/2$. The exact Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian of a graphene electron in uniform and nonuniform magnetic fields is derived. The exact energy spectrum agreeing with the experiment and exact Foldy-Wouthuysen wave eigenfunctions are obtained. These eigenfunctions describe multiwave (structured) states in (2+1)-space. It is proven that the Hermite-Gauss beams exist even in the free space. In the multiwave Hermite-Gauss states, graphene electrons acquire nonzero effective masses dependent on a quantum number and move with group velocities which are less than the Fermi velocity. Graphene electrons in a static electric field also can exist in the multiwave Hermite-Gauss states defining non-spreading coherent beams. These beams can be accelerated and decelerated.

Quantum states suitable for a production of charged particles in a uniform magnetic field are determined. The particle penetration from a solenoid to vacuum or another solenoid is analyzed in detail. Experiments allowing one successful discoveries of twisted positrons and positroniums are developed. We find a new effect of increasing a uncertainty of phase of the particle rotation with the distance passed by the particle in the solenoid. This effect leads to exciting new possibilities of production of twisted particles in real solenoids without additional devices like particle sources.

A search for the $P$- and $CP(T)$-violating electric dipole moments (EDM) of atoms, particles and nuclei with sensitivity up to $10^{-15}$ in units of magnetic dipole moments, allowed by all discrete symmetries, is one of the topical problems of modern physics. According to Sakharov, $CP$-violation is one of the three key criteria of baryogenesis in generally accepted paradigm of the Big Bang cosmology. All three criteria are supported by the Standard Model (SM), but it fails to describe the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe. This is regarded a strong argument in favor of existence of $CP$-symmetry breaking mechanisms beyond minimal SM, which can lead to measurable EDMs of atoms, particles and nuclei. Direct searches for EDM of charged particles and nuclei are possible only in storage rings (COSY, NICA). After successful studies by the JEDI collaboration at the COSY synchrotron, at the forefront is a search for the proton EDM in an electrostatic storage ring with the proton spin frozen at the magic energy with projected sensitivity $d_p\sim 10^{-29}\,e\cdot$cm. Following a brief introduction to the $CP$-violation physics and the baryogenesis, the review presents a detailed discussion of significant contributions to the spin dynamics from the terrestrial gravity along with the new effects of Earth's rotation in ultrasensitive searches for the EDM of charged particles and neutrons. Quite remarkably, for the projected sensitivity to the proton EDM, these false EDM effects can by one to two orders of magnitude exceed the signal of the proton EDM, and become comparable to an EDM contribution in experiments with ultracold neutrons. We also discuss the role of a precessing spin as a detector of the axion-like dark matter, and consider applications of the quantum gravitational anomalies to the dense matter hydrodynamics and the spin phenomena in the non-central nuclear collisions.

The relativistic spin dynamics defined by the pseudoscalar field of dark matter axions is rigorously determined. The relativistic Hamiltonian in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation is derived. It agrees with the previously obtained nonrelativistic Hamiltonians and the relativistic classical estimation of the axion wind effect. In the relativistic Hamiltonian, the biggest term describes the extraordinary (three orders of magnitude) enhancement of the axion wind effect in storage ring experiments as compared with experiments with immobile particles. This term defines the spin rotation about the longitudinal axis. The effects caused by the axion-induced oscillating EDM and the axion wind consist in the spin rotations about the different horizontal axes and phases of stimulating oscillations differ by $π/2$. Experiments in a search for dark matter axions has been discussed. The two experimental designs for axion search experiments in storage rings have been elaborated.

Zitterbewegung of massless particles with an arbitrary spin is analyzed in various representations. Dynamics of the group velocity of a massless particle as a whole and of the corresponding radius vector is determined. This radius vector defines any fixed point of the envelope of the moving wave packet characterizing the particle and its group velocity differs from the group velocities of any points of the wavefront. We consider free massless scalar and Dirac particles, the photon, and massive and massless particles with an arbitrary spin and describe them in different representations. For particles with an arbitrary spin, the generalized Feshbach-Villars representation and the Foldy-Wouthuysen one are used. Zitterbewegung takes place in any representation except for the Foldy-Wouthuysen one. Formulas describing the motion of a "trembling" free particle are the same in any representation. In the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation, the operators of the velocity and momentum of a free particle are proportional and Zitterbewegung does not take place. Since the radius vector (position) and velocity operators are the quantum-mechanical counterparts of the classical position and velocity just in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation, Zitterbewegung is not observable. The same conclusion has been previously made for free massive particles. For relativistic massive particles with spins 0, 1/2, 1 and massless particles with spins 0, 1/2 in arbitrarily strong electromagnetic fields, independent of the external fields Zitterbewegung does not appear in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation either. This conclusion is made for leading terms in the Hamiltonian proportional to the zero and first powers of the Planck constant and for such terms proportional to $\hbar^2$ which describe contact interactions.

While known formulas obtained for instantaneous fields of charges moving along straight and curved lines are fully correct, measurable quantities are average electric and magnetic fields of locked charges. It is shown that the average electric field of locked charges does not depend on their motion. The average electric field of protons moving in nuclei coincides with that of protons being at rest and having the same spatial distribution of the charge density. The electric field of a twisted electron is equivalent to the field of a centroid with immobile charges which spatial distribution is defined by the wave function of the twisted electron.

One of its possible manifestations is the T-odd asymmetry in the transmission of tensor-polarized deuterons through a vector-polarized hydrogen gas target. Upon the rotation of the deuteron polarization from the vertical direction into the ring plane, the T-odd asymmetries, odd against the reversal of the proton polarization in the target, will continuously oscillate with first or second harmonics of the spin precession frequency. The Fourier analysis of the oscillating T-odd asymmetries allows for an easy separation from background persistent in conventional experiments employing static vector and tensor polarizations.

The analysis of twisted (vortex) paraxial photons and electrons is fulfilled in the framework of relativistic quantum mechanics. The use of the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation radically simplifies a description of relativistic electrons and clarifies fundamental properties of twisted particles. It is demonstrated that the twisted photon defined by the Laguerre-Gauss wave function is luminal. Its apparent subluminality takes place because the photon energy is contributed by the hidden transversal motion while the average transversal momentum vanishes. Nevertheless, the Laguerre-Gauss photon can be self-consistently modeled by a subluminal centroid with a nonzero kinematic (Lorentz-invariant) mass. An applicability of this model is a consequence of independence of centroid parameters from the longitudinal coordinate. All twisted and untwisted Laguerre-Gauss modes are subliminal. The Laguerre-Gauss electron has similar properties. The new effect of a quantization of the velocity and mass of the Laguerre-Gauss photon and electron is predicted. This effect is observable for the photon. The twisted photon and electron modeled by the centroids are considered in the general noninertial frame. Their inertial masses coinciding with kinematic ones are determined. The orbital magnetic moment of the Laguerre-Gauss electron does not depend on the radial quantum number.

For a twisted (vortex) Dirac particle in nonuniform electric and magnetic fields, the relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian is derived including high order terms describing new effects. The result obtained shows for the first time that a twisted spin-1/2 particle possesses a tensor magnetic polarizability and a measurable (spectroscopic) electric quadrupole moment. We have calculated the former parameter and have evaluated the latter one for a twisted electron. The tensor magnetic polarizability of the twisted electron can be measured in a magnetic storage ring because a beam with an initial orbital tensor polarization acquires a horizontal orbital vector polarization. The electric quadrupole moment is rather large and strongly influences the dynamics of the intrinsic orbital angular momentum. Three different methods of its measurements, freezing the intrinsic orbital angular momentum and two resonance methods, are proposed. The existence of the quadrupole moment of twisted electrons can lead to practical applications.

Systematic effects caused by the Berry (geometric) phases in an electric-dipole-moment experiment in an all-electric storage ring are considered. We analyze the experimental setup when the spin is frozen and local longitudinal and vertical electric fields alternate. Due to the Berry phases, the spin rotates about the radial axis. The corresponding systematic error is rather important while it can be canceled with clockwise and counterclockwise beams. The Berry phases also lead to the spin rotation about the radial axis. This effect can be canceled with clockwise and counterclockwise beams as well. The sign of the azimuthal component of the angular velocity of the spin precession depends on the starting point where the spin orientation is perfect. The radial component of this quantity keeps its value and sign for each starting point. When the longitudinal and vertical electric fields are joined in the same sections without any alternation, the systematic error due to the geometric phases does not appear. However, another systematic effect of the spin rotation about the azimuthal axis takes place and has opposite signs for clockwise and counterclockwise beams.

We develop the general theory of spinning particles with electric and magnetic dipole moments moving in arbitrary electromagnetic, inertial and gravitational fields. Both the quantum-mechanical and classical dynamics is investigated. We start from the covariant Dirac equation extended to a spin-${\frac 12}$ fermion with anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments and then perform the relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. This transformation allows us to obtain the quantum-mechanical equations of motion for the physical operators in the Schrödinger form and to establish the classical limit of relativistic quantum mechanics. The results obtained are then compared to the general classical description of the spinning particle interacting with electromagnetic, inertial and gravitational fields. The complete agreement between the quantum mechanics and the classical theory is proven in the general case. As an application of the results obtained, we consider the dynamics of a spinning particle in a gravitational wave and analyze the prospects of using the magnetic resonance setup to find possible manifestations of the gravitational wave on spin.

The inertial (due to rotation) and gravitational fields of the Earth affect the motion of an elementary particle and its spin dynamics. This influence is not negligible and should be taken into account in high-energy physics experiments. Earth's influence is manifest in perturbations in the particle motion, in an additional precession of the spin, and in a change of the constitutive tensor of the Maxwell electrodynamics. Bigger corrections are oscillatory, and their contributions average to zero. Other corrections due to the inhomogeneity of the inertial field are not oscillatory but they are very small and may be important only for the storage ring electric dipole moment experiments. Earth's gravity causes the Newton-like force, the reaction force provided by a focusing system, and additional torques acting on the spin. However, there are no observable indications of the electromagnetic effects due to Earth's gravity.

A general theoretical description of a magnetic resonance is presented. This description is necessary for a detailed analysis of spin dynamics in electric-dipole-moment experiments in storage rings. General formulas describing a behavior of all components of the polarization vector at the magnetic resonance are obtained for an arbitrary initial polarization. These formulas are exact on condition that the nonresonance rotating field is neglected. The spin dynamics is also calculated at frequencies far from resonance with allowance for both rotating fields. A general quantum-mechanical analysis of the spin evolution at the magnetic resonance is fulfilled and the full agreement between the classical and quantum-mechanical approaches is shown. Quasimagnetic resonances for particles and nuclei moving in noncontinuous perturbing fields of accelerators and storage rings are considered. Distinguishing features of quasimagnetic resonances in storage ring electric-dipole-moment experiments are investigated in detail. The exact formulas for the effect caused by the electric dipole moment are derived. The difference between the resonance effects conditioned by the rf electric-field flipper and the rf Wien filter is found and is calculated for the first time. The existence of this difference is crucial for the establishment of a consent between analytical derivations and computer simulations and for checking spin tracking programs. Main systematical errors are considered.

A Hermitian form of the Klein-Gordon equation for a pointlike scalar particle in an arbitrary n-dimensional Riemannian (or Riemann-Cartan) spacetime is obtained. New conformal symmetries of initial and Hermitian forms of this equation are ascertained. In the above spacetime, general Hamiltonians in the generalized Feshbach-Villars and Foldy-Wouthuysen representations are derived. The conformal-like transformation conserving these Hamiltonians is found. Corresponding conformal symmetries of a Dirac particle are determined. A general method of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is developed. This method is applicable to relativistic particles with any spin in arbitrarily strong external fields. It can be used when the de Broglie wavelength is much smaller than the characteristic distance. Contrary to previously developed relativistic methods, the present method satisfies the condition of the exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation and is well substantiated. The derived relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian is expanded in powers of the Planck constant. In this expansion, terms proportional to the zero and first powers are determined exactly in accordance with the above condition and terms proportional to higher powers are not specified. The obtained result agrees with the corresponding formula for the Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian previously deduced by an iterative relativistic method and proves the validity of results obtained with this formula.

We show that the origin of the nonequivalence of Hamiltonians in different representations is a change of the form of the time-derivative operator at a time-dependent unitary transformation. This nonequivalence does not lead to an ambiguity of the energy expectation values of a particle in nonstationary fields but assigns the basic representation. It has been explicitly or implicitly supposed in previous investigations that this representation is the Dirac one. We prove the alternative assertion about the basic role of the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation. We also derive the general equation for the energy expectation values in the Dirac representation. As an example, we consider a spin-1/2 particle with anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments in strong time-dependent electromagnetic fields. The metric of the spacetime is completely arbitrary, allowing for the discussion of all possible inertial and gravitational field configurations.
