Polynomials with exponents in compact convex sets and associated weighted extremal functions -- The Bernstein-Walsh-Siciak theorem
Abstract: We generalize the Bernstein-Walsh-Siciak theorem on polynomial approximation in $\mathbb{C}^n$ to the case where the polynomial ring $\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ is replaced by a subring $\mathcal{P}^S(\mathbb{C}^n)$ consisting of all polynomials with exponents restricted to sets $mS$, where $S$ is a compact convex subset of $\mathbb{R}_+^n$ with $0 \in S$ and $m = 0, 1, 2, 3, \dots$, and uniform e… ▽ More

Polynomials with exponents in compact convex sets and associated weighted extremal functions -- The Siciak-Zakharyuta theorem
Abstract: The classical Siciak-Zakharyuta theorem states that the Siciak-Zakharyuta function $V_{E}$ of a subset $E$ of $\mathbb C^n$, also called a pluricomplex Green function or global exremal function of $E$, equals the logarithm of the Siciak function $Φ_E$ if $E$ is compact. The Siciak-Zakharyuta function is defined as the upper envelope of functions in the Lelong class that are negative on $E$, and th… ▽ More

Polynomials with exponents in compact convex sets and associated weighted extremal functions -- Characterization of polynomials by L2-estimates
Abstract: The main result of this paper is that an entire function $f$ that is in $L^2(\mathbb C^n,ψ)$ with respect to the weight $ψ(z)=2mH_S(z)+γ\log(1+|z|^2)$ is a polynomial with exponents in $m\widehat S_Γ$. Here $H_S$ is the logarithmic supporting function of a compact convex set $S\subset \mathbb R^n_+$ with $0\in S$, $γ\geq 0$ is small enough in terms of $m$, and $\widehat S_Γ$ is the hull of $S$ wit… ▽ More

Polynomials with exponents in compact convex sets and associated weighted extremal functions -- Fundamental results
Abstract: This paper is a survey of plurisubharmonic theory where the usual polynomial ring is replaced by a polynomial ring $\mathcal P^S(\mathbb C^n)$ where the $m$-th degree polynomials have exponents restricted to $mS$, where $S\subseteq \mathbb R^n_+$ is compact, convex and $0\in S$. We assume no other conditions on $S$ as these are necessary for $\mathcal P^S(\mathbb C^n)$ to be a graded polynomial ri… ▽ More

Order of magnitude increase in laser-target coupling at near-relativistic intensities using compound parabolic concentrators
Abstract: Achieving a high conversion efficiency into relativistic electrons is central to short-pulse laser application and fundamentally relies on creating interaction regions with intensities ${\gg}10^{18}$~W/cm$^2$. Small focal length optics are typically employed to achieve this goal; however, this solution is impractical for large kJ-class systems that are constrained by facility geometry, debris conc… ▽ More

Abstract: We prove that for any given upper semicontinuous function $\varphi$ on an open subset $E$ of $\mathbb C^n\setminus\{0\}$, such that the complex cone generated by $E$ minus the origin is connected, the homogeneous Siciak-Zaharyuta function with the weight $\varphi$ on $E$, can be represented as an envelope of a disc functional.

Limits of multipole pluricomplex Green functions
Abstract: Let $S_ε$ be a set of $N$ points in a bounded hyperconvex domain in $C^n$, all tending to 0 as$ε$ tends to 0. To each set $S_ε$ we associate its vanishing ideal $I_ε$ and the pluricomplex Green function $G_ε$ with poles on the set. Suppose that, as $ε$ tends to 0, the vanishing ideals converge to $I$ (local uniform convergence, or equivalently convergence in the Douady space), and that $G_ε$ conve… ▽ More

Siciak-Zahariuta extremal functions, analytic discs and polynomial hulls
Abstract: We prove two disc formulas for the Siciak-Zahariuta extremal function of an arbitrary open subset of complex affine space. We use these formulas to characterize the polynomial hull of an arbitrary compact subset of complex affine space in terms of analytic discs. Similar results in previous work of ours required the subsets to be connected.

The Siciak-Zahariuta extremal function as the envelope of disc functionals
Abstract: We establish disc formulas for the Siciak-Zahariuta extremal function of an arbitrary open subset of complex affine space, generalizing Lempert's formula for the convex case. This function is also known as the pluricomplex Green function with logarithmic growth or a logarithmic pole at infinity. We extend Lempert's formula for this function from the convex case to the connected case.

Comments: Version 3 contains a proof of Lempert's formula for the S-Z function in the convex case, in slightly modified form, for an arbitrary connected open subset of affine space. This was the main problem left unsolved in the earlier versions. The rest of the paper is essentially unchanged from version 2

For naturally defined classes of disc functionals on manifolds, this result reduces a property somewhat stronger than having a plurisubha… ▽ More

Abstract: The Jensen envelope $Jφ$ of an upper semicontinuous function $φ$ on a complex manifold X is defined at $x\in X$ as the infimum of $μ(φ)$ over all Jensen measures $μ$ centred at x. The Poisson envelope $Pφ$ is defined by using only the boundary measures of analytic discs centred at x.
