We investigate the renormalization group flow of projectable Horava gravity in $(3+1)$ dimensions generated by marginal operators with respect to the Lifshitz scaling. The flow possesses a number of asymptotically free fixed points. We find a family of trajectories connecting one of these fixed points in the ultraviolet to the region of the parameter space where the kinetic term of the theory acquires the general relativistic form. The gravitational coupling exhibits non-monotonic behavior along the flow, vanishing both in the ultraviolet and the infrared.

We study the high-energy limit of projectable Ho\v rava gravity using on-shell graviton scattering amplitudes. We compute the tree-level amplitudes using symbolic computer algebra and analyze their properties in the case of collisions with zero total momentum. The amplitudes grow with collision energy in the way consistent with tree-level unitarity. We discuss their angular dependence and derive the expression for the differential cross section that happens to depend only on the essential combinations of the couplings. One of our key results is that the amplitudes for arbitrary kinematics are finite when the coupling $λ$ in the kinetic Lagrangian is taken to infinity -- the value corresponding to candidate asymptotically free ultraviolet fixed points of the theory. We formulate a modified action which reproduces the same amplitudes and is directly applicable at $λ=\infty$, thereby establishing that the limit $λ\to\infty$ of projectable Ho\v rava gravity is regular. As an auxiliary result, we derive the generalized Ward identities for the amplitudes in non-relativistic gauge theories.

We derive the full set of beta functions for the marginal essential couplings of projectable Horava gravity in (3 + 1)-dimensional spacetime. To this end we compute the divergent part of the one-loop effective action in static background with arbitrary spatial metric. The computation is done in several steps: reduction of the problem to three dimensions, extraction of an operator square root from the spatial part of the fluctuation operator, and evaluation of its trace using the method of universal functional traces. This provides us with the renormalization of couplings in the potential part of the action which we combine with the results for the kinetic part obtained previously. The calculation uses symbolic computer algebra and is performed in four different gauges yielding identical results for the essential beta functions. We additionally check the calculation by evaluating the effective action on a special background with spherical spatial slices using an alternative method of spectral summation. We conclude with a preliminary discussion of the properties of the beta functions and the resulting renormalization group flow, identifying several candidate asymptotically free fixed points.

Horava gravity is a proposal for completing general relativity in the ultraviolet by interactions that violate Lorentz invariance at very high energies. We focus on (2+1)-dimensional projectable Horava gravity, a theory which is renormalizable and perturbatively ultraviolet-complete, enjoying an asymptotically free ultraviolet fixed point. Adding a small cosmological constant to regulate the long distance behavior of the metric, we search for all circularly symmetric stationary vacuum solutions with vanishing angular momentum and approaching the de Sitter metric with a possible angle deficit at infinity. We find a two-parameter family of such geometries. Apart from the cosmological de Sitter horizon, these solutions generally contain another Killing horizon and should therefore be interpreted as black holes from the viewpoint of the low-energy theory. Contrary to naive expectations, their central singularity is not resolved by the higher derivative terms present in the action. It is unknown at present if these solutions form as a result of gravitational collapse. The only solution regular everywhere is just the de Sitter metric devoid of any black hole horizon.

We compute the renormalization group running of the Newton constant and the parameter $λ$ in $(3+1)$-dimensional projectable Horava gravity. We use the background field method expanding around configurations with flat spatial metric, but non-vanishing shift. This allows us to reduce the number of interaction vertices and thereby drastically simplify the calculations. The gauge invariant $β$-function of $λ$ has two families of zeros, attractive in the infrared and ultraviolet respectively. They are candidates for the fixed points of the full renormalization group flow of the theory, once the $β$-functions for the rest of the couplings are added.

Using the background-field method we demonstrate the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) structure of counterterms in a broad class of gauge theories. Put simply, we show that gauge invariance is preserved by renormalization in local gauge field theories whenever they admit a sensible background-field formulation and anomaly-free path integral measure. This class encompasses Yang-Mills theories (with possibly Abelian subgroups) and relativistic gravity, including both renormalizable and non-renormalizable (effective) theories. Our results also hold for non-relativistic models such as Yang-Mills theories with anisotropic scaling or Horava gravity. They strengthen and generalize the existing results in the literature concerning the renormalization of gauge systems. Locality of the BRST construction is emphasized throughout the derivation. We illustrate our general approach with several explicit examples.

This guarantees that the counterterms required to absorb the loop divergences are local and marginal or relevant with respect to the anisotropic scaling. Gauge invariance of the counterterms is achieved by making use of the background-covariant formalism. We also comment on the difficulties of this approach when addressing the renormalizability of the non-projectable model.

It was found recently that processes of multidimensional tunneling are generally described at high energies by unstable semiclassical trajectories. We study two observational signatures related to the instability of trajectories. First, we find an additional power-law dependence of the tunneling probability on the semiclassical parameter as compared to the standard case of potential tunneling. The second signature is substantial widening of the probability distribution over final-state quantum numbers. These effects are studied using modified semiclassical technique which incorporates stabilization of the tunneling trajectories. The technique is derived from first principles. We obtain expressions for the inclusive and exclusive tunneling probabilities in the case of unstable semiclassical trajectories. We also investigate the "phase transition" between the cases of stable and unstable trajectories across certain "critical" value of energy. Finally, we derive the relation between the semiclassical probabilities of tunneling from the low-lying and highly excited initial states. This puts on firm ground a conjecture made previously in the semiclassical description of collision-induced tunneling in field theory.

We propose a cosmological model which exhibits the phenomenon of self-acceleration: the Universe is attracted to the phase of accelerated expansion at late times even in the absence of the cosmological constant. The self-acceleration is inevitable in the sense that it cannot be neutralized by any negative explicit cosmological constant. The model is formulated in the framework of brane-world theories with a warped extra dimension. The key ingredient of the model is the brane-bulk energy transfer which is carried by bulk vector fields with a sigma-model-like boundary condition on the brane. We explicitly find the 5-dimensional metric corresponding to the late-time de Sitter expansion on the brane; this metric describes an AdS_5 black hole with growing mass. The present value of the Hubble parameter implies the scale of new physics of order 1 TeV, where the proposed model has to be replaced by putative UV-completion. The mechanism leading to the self-acceleration has AdS/CFT interpretation as occurring due to specific dynamics of conformal matter interacting with external "electric" fields. The Universe expansion history predicted by the model is distinguishable from the standard LambdaCDM cosmology.

We develop the semiclassical method of complex trajectories in application to chaotic dynamical tunneling. First, we suggest a systematic numerical technique for obtaining complex tunneling trajectories by the gradual deformation of the classical ones. This provides a natural classification of the tunneling solutions. Second, we present a heuristic procedure for sorting out the least suppressed trajectory. As an illustration, we apply our technique to the process of chaotic tunneling in a quantum mechanical model with two degrees of freedom. Our analysis reveals rich dynamics of the system. At the classical level, there exists an infinite set of unstable solutions forming a fractal structure. This structure is inherited by the complex tunneling paths and plays the central role in the semiclassical study. The process we consider exhibits the phenomenon of optimal tunneling: the suppression exponent of the tunneling probability has a local minimum at a certain energy which is thus (locally) the optimal energy for tunneling. We test the proposed method by comparison of the semiclassical results with the results of the exact quantum computations and find a good agreement.

We study the effect of spontaneous breaking of Lorentz invariance on black hole thermodynamics. We consider a scenario where Lorentz symmetry breaking manifests itself by the difference of maximal velocities attainable by particles of different species in a preferred reference frame. The Lorentz breaking sector is represented by the ghost condensate. We find that the notions of black hole entropy and temperature loose their universal meaning. In particular, the standard derivation of the Hawking radiation yields that a black hole does emit thermal radiation in any given particle species, but with temperature depending on the maximal attainable velocity of this species. We demonstrate that this property implies violation of the second law of thermodynamics, and hence, allows construction of a perpetuum mobile of the 2nd kind. We discuss possible interpretation of these results.

We consider tunneling transitions between states separated by an energy barrier in a simple field theoretical model. We analyse the case of soliton creation induced by collisions of a few highly energetic particles. We present semiclassical, but otherwise first principle, study of this process at all energies of colliding particles. We find that direct tunneling to the final state occurs at energies below the critical value E_c, which is slightly higher than the barrier height. Tunneling probability grows with energy in this regime. Above the critical energy, the tunneling mechanism is different. The transition proceeds through creation of a state close to the top of the potential barrier (sphaleron) and its subsequent decay. At certain limiting energy E_l tunneling probability ceases to grow. At higher energies the dominant mechanism of transition becomes the release of energy excess E-E_l by the emission of a few particles and then tunneling at effectively lower energy E=E_l via the limiting semiclassical configuration. The latter belongs to a class of ``real--time instantons'', semiclassical solutions saturating the inclusive probability of tunneling from initial states with given number of particles. We conclude that the process of collision--induced tunneling is exponentially suppressed at all energies.

We construct domain walls on noncommutative plane, which separate vacua with different gauge groups in gauge theory with adjoint scalar field. The scalar field has nonminimal coupling to the gauge field, such that the scale of noncommutativity is determined by the vacuum value of the scalar field. The domain walls are solutions of the BPS equations in the theory. It is natural to interprete the domain wall as a stack of D-branes plus a stack of folded D-branes. We support this interpretation by the analysis of small fluctuations around domain walls, and suggest that such configurations of branes emerge as solutions of the Matrix model in large class of pp-wave backgrounds with inhomogeneous field strength. We point out that the folded D-brane per se provides an explicit realization of the "mirror world" idea, and speculate on some phenomenological consequences of this scenario.

We construct noncommutative domain walls on fuzzy cylinder, separating vacua with different gauge theories. These domain walls are solutions of BPS equations in gauge theory with an extra term stabilizing the radius of the cylinder. We study properties of the domain walls using adjoint scalar and fundamental fermion fields as probes. We show that the regions on different sides of the wall are not disjoint even in the low energy regime -- there are modes penetrating from one region to the other. We find that the wall supports a chiral fermion zero mode. Also, we study non-BPS solution representing a wall and an antiwall, and show that this solution is unstable. We suggest that the domain walls emerge as solutions of matrix model in large class of pp-wave backgrounds with inhomogeneous field strength. In the M-theory language, the domain walls have an interpretation of a stack of branes of fingerstall shape inserted into a stack of cylindrical branes.

We show that once the world-volume U(m) gauge theory is in the Higgs phase, light states become quasi-localized, rather than strictly localized on the soliton, i.e. they mix with light bulk modes and have finite widths to escape into the noncommutative dimensions. At small values of U(m) symmetry breaking parameters, these widths are small compared to the corresponding masses. Explicit examples considered are adjoint scalar field in the background of a noncommutative vortex in U(1)-Higgs theory, and gauge fields in instanton backgrounds in pure gauge noncommutative theories.

We show that this vacuum is, in fact, the same as the {\it in}-vacuum defined in the frame with de Sitter (dS$_4$) slicing, in which the brane is at rest. Thus, during inflation, gravitons on and off the brane remain in their vacuum state. We then study graviton creation by the brane on which inflation terminates at some moment of time. We mostly consider gravitons whose wavelengths at the end of inflation exceed both the horizon size and the adS$_5$ radius. Creation of these gravitons is dominated by (zero mode)--(zero mode) Bogoliubov coefficients and, apart from an overall factor, the spectrum of produced gravitons is the same as in four-dimensional theory. ``Kaluza--Klein'' gravitons are also produced, but this effect is subdominant. Graviton spectra at somewhat higher momenta are also presented for completeness.

The standard picture of viable higher-dimensional theories is that extra dimensions manifest themselves at short distances only, their effects being negligible at scales larger than some critical value. We show that this is not necessarily true in models with infinite extra dimensions. As an example, we consider a five-dimensional scenario with three 3-branes in which gravity is five-dimensional…

The standard picture of viable higher-dimensional theories is that extra dimensions manifest themselves at short distances only, their effects being negligible at scales larger than some critical value. We show that this is not necessarily true in models with infinite extra dimensions. As an example, we consider a five-dimensional scenario with three 3-branes in which gravity is five-dimensional both at short {\it and} very long distance scales, with conventional four-dimensional gravity operating at intermediate length scales. A phenomenologically acceptable range of validity of four-dimensional gravity extending from microscopic to cosmological scales is obtained without strong fine-tuning of parameters.

Abstract:
We suggest a technique that explicitly accounts for the structure of an initial state of quantum field in the semiclassical calculations of path integral in curved space-time, and consider decay of metastable state (conformal vacuum of scalar particles above false classical vacuum) in background de Sitter space-time as an example. Making use of this technique, we justify the Coleman-De Luccia ap…

We suggest a technique that explicitly accounts for the structure of an initial state of quantum field in the semiclassical calculations of path integral in curved space-time, and consider decay of metastable state (conformal vacuum of scalar particles above false classical vacuum) in background de Sitter space-time as an example. Making use of this technique, we justify the Coleman-De Luccia approach to the calculation of the decay probability. We propose an interpretation of the Hawking-Moss instanton as a limiting case of constrained instantons. We find that an inverse process of the transition from true vacuum to false one is allowed in de Sitter space-time, and calculate the corresponding probability.
