Abstract:
We report an unusual persistence of superconductivity against high magnetic fields in the iron chalcogenide film FeTe:O$_{x}$ below ~ 2.5 K. Instead of saturating like a mean-field behavior with a single order parameter, the measured low-temperature upper critical field increases progressively, suggesting a large supply of superconducting states accessible via magnetic field or low-energy thermal…

We report an unusual persistence of superconductivity against high magnetic fields in the iron chalcogenide film FeTe:O$_{x}$ below ~ 2.5 K. Instead of saturating like a mean-field behavior with a single order parameter, the measured low-temperature upper critical field increases progressively, suggesting a large supply of superconducting states accessible via magnetic field or low-energy thermal fluctuations. We demonstrate that superconducting states of finite momenta can be realized within the conventional theory, despite its questionable applicability. Our findings reveal a fundamental characteristic of superconductivity and electronic structure in the strongly-correlated iron-based superconductors.

Abstract:
Nano-scaled substrate surface roughness is shown to strongly influence the critical current density Jc in YBCO films made by pulse-laser-deposition on the crystalline LaAlO3 substrates consisting of two separate twin-free and twin-rich regions. The nano-scaled corrugated surface was created in the twin-rich region during the deposition process. Using magneto-optical imaging techniques coupled wi…

Using magneto-optical imaging techniques coupled with optical and atomic force microscopy, we observed an enhanced flux pinning in the YBCO films in the twin-rich region, resulted in \~30% increase in Jc, which was unambiguously confirmed by the direct transport measurement.

Abstract:
Magnetic flux front and induction contours in superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-d films with defect size s ~ l (superconducting coherence length) and s > l are studied by magneto-optical imaging. Robust self-affine spatial correlation was observed using scaling analysis in the small pinning-dominated (s ~ l) disorderd films. Magnetic flux front and induction contours in superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-d films with defect size s ~ l (superconducting coherence length) and s > l are studied by magneto-optical imaging. Robust self-affine spatial correlation was observed using scaling analysis in the small pinning-dominated (s ~ l) disorderd films. The roughness exponent was determined to be ~ 0.66, independent of numbers of defects (or the film thickness). When the disorder landscape also included a distribution of large defects (s >> l), the flux front and induction contours exhibited self-similarity, with a fractal dimension to be ~ 1.33 using the box-counting method. The remarkably different flux penetration patterns were shown to be the manifestation of self-organized criticality at different length scales.

By measuring the field and temperature dependence of magnetization on systematically doped $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ thin films, the critical current density $j_c(0)$ and the collective pinning energy $U_p(0)$ are determined in single vortex creep regime. By measuring the field and temperature dependence of magnetization on systematically doped $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ thin films, the critical current density $j_c(0)$ and the collective pinning energy $U_p(0)$ are determined in single vortex creep regime. Together with the published data of superfluid density, condensation energy and anisotropy, for the first time we derive the do** dependence of the coherence length or vortex core size in wide do** regime directly from the low temperature data. It is found that the coherence length drops in the underdoped region and increases in the overdoped side with the increase of hole concentration. The result in underdoped region clearly deviates from what expected by the pre-formed pairing model if one simply associates the pseudogap with the upper-critical field.

Abstract:
We report angle-resolved photoemission spectra both above and below T_c in the single-plane cuprate superconductor Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+d}. The superconducting state measurements show a highly anisotropic excitation gap with a maximum magnitude smaller than that of the bilayer compound Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 by a factor of 3. For a range of do**, the gap persists well above T_c, behavior previously associated with underdoped bilayer cuprates. The anisotropy and magnitude of the normal-state gap are very similar to the superconducting state gap, indicating that the two gaps may have a common origin in a pairing interaction.
