Certain connections with the work of Ramanujan and other authors are discussed, involving other special functions and binomial sums of different kinds.

We present an analytic calculation of the layer (parallel) susceptibility at the extraordinary transition in a semi-infinite system with a flat boundary. Using the method of integral transforms put forward by McAvity and Osborn [Nucl. Phys. B 455 (1995) 522] in the boundary CFT we derive the coordinate-space representation of the mean-field propagator at the transition point. The simple algebraic structure of this function provides a practical possibility of higher-order calculations. Thus we calculate the explicit expression for the layer susceptibility at the extraordinary transition in the one-loop approximation. Our result is correct up to order $O(\varepsilon)$ of the $\varepsilon=4-d$ expansion and holds for arbitrary width of the layer and its position in the half-space. We discuss the general structure of our result and consider the limiting cases related to the boundary operator expansion and (bulk) operator product expansion. We compare our findings with previously known results and less complicated formulas in the case of the ordinary transition. We believe that analytic results for layer susceptibilities could be a good starting point for efficient calculations of two-point correlation functions. This possibility would be of great importance given the recent breakthrough in bulk and boundary conformal field theories in general dimensions.

Our results are valid in the whole convergence region of the integral for generic (non-integer) co-dimensions $D$ and $m$. We obtain series expansions of $I_{D,m}(p,q)$ in terms of powers of the variable $X:=4p^2/q^4$, where $p=|\bm p|$, $q=|\bm q|$, $\bm p\in\mathbb R^D$, $\bm q\in\mathbb R^m$, and in terms of generalised hypergeometric functions $_3F_2(-X)$, when $X<1$. These are subsequently analytically continued to the complementary region $X\ge 1$. The asymptotic expansion in inverse powers of $X^{1/2}$ is derived. The correctness of the results is supported by agreement with previously known special cases and extensive numerical calculations.

We derive the leading nontrivial 1/n correction for the perpendicular correlation-length exponent nu_{L2} and hence several related thermal exponents to order O(1/n). The results are consistent with known large-n expansions for d-dimensional critical points and isotropic Lifshitz points, as well as with the second-order epsilon expansion about the upper critical dimension d^*=4+m/2 for generic m\in[0,d]. Analytical results are given for the special case d=4, m=1. For uniaxial Lifshitz points in three dimensions, 1/n coefficients are calculated numerically. Strongly anisotropic critical systems are considered in a $d$-dimensional film geometry. Such systems involve two (or more) distinct correlation lengths $ξ_β$ and $ξ_α$ that scale as nontrivial powers of each other, i.e.\ $ξ_α\simξ_β^θ$ with anisotropy index $θ\ne 1$. Thus two fundamental orientations, perpendicular ($\perp$) and parallel ($\|$), for which the surface normal is oriented along an $α$- and $β$-direction, respectively, must be distinguished. The confinement of critical fluctuations caused by the film's boundary planes is shown to induce effective forces $\mathcal{F}_C$ that decay as $\mathcal{F}_C\propto-(\partial/\partial L)Δ_{\perp,\|}\,L^{-ζ_{\perp,\|}}$ as the film thickness $L$ becomes large, where the proportionality constants involve nonuniversal amplitudes. The decay exponents $ζ_{\perp,\|}$ and the Casimir amplitudes $Δ_{\perp,\|}$ are universal but depend on the type of orientation. To corroborate these findings, $n$-vector models with an $m$-axial bulk Lifshitz point are investigated by means of RG methods below the upper critical dimension $d^*(m)=4+m/2$ under various boundary conditions (BC). The exponents $ζ_{\perp,\|}$ are determined, and explicit results to one- or two-loop order are presented for several Casimir amplitudes $Δ^{\mathrm{BC}}_{\perp,\|}$. The large-$n$ limits of the Casimir amplitudes $Δ_{\|}^{\mathrm{BC}}/n$ for periodic and Dirichlet BC are shown to be proportional to their critical-point analogues at dimension $d-m/2$. The limiting values $Δ^{\mathrm{PBC}}_{\|,\perp,\infty}=\lim_{n\to\infty}Δ_{\|,\perp}^{\mathrm{PBC}}/n$ are determined exactly for the uniaxial cases $(d,m)=(3,1)$ under periodic BC. Unlike $Δ^{\mathrm{PBC}}_{\|,\infty}$, $Δ^{\mathrm{PBC}}_{\perp,\infty}$ is positive, so that the corresponding Casimir force is repulsive.

The theory of generalized local scale invariance of strongly anisotropic scale invariant systems proposed some time ago by Henkel [Nucl. Phys. B \textbf{641}, 405 (2002)] is examined. The case of so-called type-I systems is considered. This was conjectured to be realized by systems at m-axial Lifshitz points; in support of this claim, scaling functions of two-point cumulants at the uniaxial Lifshitz point of the three-dimensional ANNNI model were predicted on the basis of this theory and found to be in excellent agreement with Monte Carlo results [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{87}, 125702 (2001)]. The consequences of the conjectured invariance equations are investigated. It is shown that fewer solutions than anticipated by Henkel generally exist and contribute to the scaling functions if these equations are assumed to hold for all (positive and negative) values of the d-dimensional space (or space time) coordinates $(t,\bm{r})\in \mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}^{d-1}$. Specifically, a single rather than two independent solutions exists in the case relevant for the mentioned fit of Monte Carlo data for the ANNNI model. Renormalization-group improved perturbation theory in $4+m/2-ε$ dimensions is used to determine the scaling functions of the order-parameter and energy-density two-point cumulants in momentum space to two-loop order. The results are mathematically incompatible with Henkel's predictions except in free-field-theory cases. However, the scaling function of the energy-density cumulant we obtain for m=1 upon extrapolation of our two-loop RG results to d=3 differs numerically little from that of an effective free field theory.

Systems described by $n$-component $φ^4$ models in a $\infty^{d-1}\times L$ slab geometry of finite thickness $L$ are considered at and above their bulk critical temperature $T_{c,\infty}$. The renormalization-group improved perturbation theory commonly employed to investigate the fluctuation-induced forces (``thermodynamic Casimir effect'') in $d=4-ε$ bulk dimensions is re-examined. It is found to be ill-defined beyond two-loop order because of infrared singularities when the boundary conditions are such that the free propagator in slab geometry involves a zero-energy mode at bulk criticality. This applies to periodic boundary conditions and the special-special ones corresponding to the critical enhancement of the surface interactions on both confining plates. The field theory is reorganized such that a small-$ε$ expansion results which remains well behaved down to $T_{c,\infty}$. The leading contributions to the critical Casimir amplitudes $Δ_{\mathrm{per}}$ and $Δ_{\mathrm{sp},\mathrm{sp}}$ beyond two-loop order are $\sim (u^*)^{(3-ε)/2}$, where $u^*=O(ε)$ is the value of the renormalized $φ^4$ coupling at the infrared-stable fixed point. Besides integer powers of $ε$, the small-$ε$ expansions of these amplitudes involve fractional powers $ε^{k/2}$, with $k\geq 3$, and powers of $\ln ε$. Explicit results to order $ε^{3/2}$ are presented for $Δ_{\mathrm{per}}$ and $Δ_{\mathrm{sp},\mathrm{sp}}$, which are used to estimate their values at $d=3$.

Semi-infinite $d$-dimensional systems with an $m$-axial bulk Lifshitz point are considered whose ($d-1$)-dimensional surface hyper-plane is oriented perpendicular to one of the $m$ modulation axes. An $n$-component $φ^4$ field theory describing the bulk and boundary critical behaviour when (i) the Hamiltonian can be taken to have O(n) symmetry and (ii) spatial anisotropies breaking its Euclidean symmetry in the $m$-dimensional coordinate subspace of potential modulation directions may be ignored is investigated. The long-distance behaviour at the ordinary surface transition is mapped onto a field theory with the boundary conditions that both the order parameter $\bmφ$ and its normal derivative $\partial_n\bmφ$ vanish at the surface plane. The boundary-operator expansion is utilized to study the short-distance behaviour of $\bmφ$ near the surface. Its leading contribution is found to be controlled by the boundary operator $\partial_n^2\bmφ$. The field theory is renormalized for dimensions $d$ below the upper critical dimension $d^*(m)=4+m/2$, with a corresponding surface source term $\propto \partial_n^2\bmφ$ added. The anomalous dimension of this boundary operator is computed to first order in $ε=d^*-d$. The result is used in conjunction with scaling laws to estimate the value of the single independent surface critical exponent $β_{\mathrm{L}1}^{(\mathrm{ord},\perp)}$ for $d=3$. Our estimate for the case $m=n=1$ of a uniaxial Lifshitz point in Ising systems is in reasonable agreement with published Monte Carlo results.

The large-n expansion is developed for the study of critical behaviour of d-dimensional systems at m-axial Lifshitz points with an arbitrary number m of modulation axes. The leading non-trivial contributions of O(1/n) are derived for the two independent correlation exponents η_{L2} and η_{L4}, and the related anisotropy index θ. The series coefficients of these 1/n corrections are given for general values of m and d with 0<m<d and 2+m/2<d<4+m/2 in the form of integrals. For special values of m and d such as (m,d)=(1,4), they can be computed analytically, but in general their evaluation requires numerical means. The 1/n corrections are shown to reduce in the appropriate limits to those of known large-n expansions for the case of d-dimensional isotropic Lifshitz points and critical points, respectively, and to be in conformity with available dimensionality expansions about the upper and lower critical dimensions. Numerical results for the 1/n coefficients of η_{L2}, η_{L4} and θare presented for the physically interesting case of a uniaxial Lifshitz point in three dimensions, as well as for some other choices of m and d. A universal coefficient associated with the energy-density pair correlation function is calculated to leading order in 1/n for general values of m and d.

The critical behavior of $d$-dimensional systems with $n$-component order parameter $\bmφ$ is studied at an $m$-axial Lifshitz point where a wave-vector instability occurs in an $m$-dimensional subspace ${\mathbb R}^m$ ($m{>}1$). Field theoretic renormalization group techniques are exploited to examine the effects of terms in the Hamiltonian that break the rotational symmetry of the Euclidean group ${\mathbb E}(m)$. The framework for considering general operators of second order in $\bmφ$ and fourth order in the derivatives $\partial_α$ with respect to the Cartesian coordinates $x_α$ of ${\mathbb R}^m$ is presented. For the specific case of systems with cubic anisotropy, the effects of having an additional term, $\sum_{α=1}^m(\partial_α^2\bmφ)^2$, are investigated in an $ε$ expansion about the upper critical dimension $d^{*}(m)=4+m/2$. Its associated crossover exponent is computed to order $ε^2$ and found to be positive, so that it is a \emph{relevant} perturbation on a model isotropic in ${\mathbb R}^m$.
