3D cell tracking in a living organism has a crucial role in live cell image analysis. Cell tracking in C. elegans has two difficulties. First, cell migration in a consecutive frame is large since they move their head during scanning. Second, cell detection is often inconsistent in consecutive frames due to touching cells and low-contrast images, and these inconsistent detections affect the tracking performance worse. In this paper, we propose a cell tracking method to address these issues, which has two main contributions. First, we introduce cell position heatmap-based non-rigid alignment with test-time fine-tuning, which can warp the detected points to near the positions at the next frame. Second, we propose a pairwise detection method, which uses the information of detection results at the previous frame for detecting cells at the current frame. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of each module, and the proposed method achieved the best performance in comparison.

We have investigated the status of the nuclear debris in the Unit-2 Nuclear Reactor of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power plant by the method called Cosmic Muon Radiography. In this measurement, the muon detector was placed outside of the reactor building as was the case of the measurement for the Unit-1 Reactor. Compared to the previous measurements, the detector was down-sized, which made us possible to locate it closer to the reactor and to investigate especially the lower part of the fuel loading zone. We identified the inner structures of the reactor such as the containment vessel, pressure vessel and other objects through the thick concrete wall of the reactor building. Furthermore, the observation showed existence of heavy material at the bottom of the pressure vessel, which can be interpreted as the debris of melted nuclear fuel dropped from the loading zone.

The use of bacteria has been attractive to cancer researchers as drug delivery vehicle because motile bacteria are able to penetrate in tumors. In particular, the combination of therapeutic bacteria and conventional chemotherapy leads to dramatically high anti-tumor efficay. However, the mechanisms of the synergy, in part, remain unclear. To aim for understanding the mechanisms of the synergy of the combination therapy, simultaneous delivery of C. novyi-NT and chemotherapeutic agents in tumors is mathematically modeled from porous media approach. Simulated doxorubicin concentration in tumors after Doxil administration with or without bacteria agreed reasonably well with experimental literature. The simulated doxorubicin concentration in tumors by the combination of Doxil and C. novyi-NT is over twice higher than that of Doxil alone, as observed in previous experimental literature. This enhanced concentration is because of the degradation of extracellular matrix of collagen by bacterial proteolytic activity, which reduced interstitial fluid pressure in tumors by increasing hydraulic conductivity of interstitium, and thus increases convection through vessel walls. Additionally, solid stress alleviation caused by collagen degradation increases vessel density by decompressing blood vessels. On the other hand, the simulated doxorubicin concentration in tumors for non-liposomal doxorubicin is not enhanced by C. novyi-NT because vascular permeability of free-doxorubicin is larger than Doxil, and thus, increased but relatively small convection across vessel walls is outweighed by the efflux due to increased interstitial flow. A strategy to further enhance this combination therapy is discussed with sensitivity analysis.

Constraining Galileon gravity from observational data with growth rate

We studied the cosmological constraints on the Galileon gravity obtained from observational data of the growth rate of matter density perturbations, the supernovae Ia (SN Ia), the cosmic microwave background (CMB), and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). For the same value of the energy density parameter of matter $Ω_{m,0}$, the growth rate $f$ in Galileon models is enhanced, relative to the $Λ$CDM case, because of an increase in Newton's constant. The smaller $Ω_{m,0}$ is, the more growth rate is suppressed. Therefore, the best fit value of $Ω_{m,0}$ in the Galileon model, based only the growth rate data, is quite small. This is incompatible with the value of $Ω_{m,0}$ obtained from the combination of SN Ia, CMB, and BAO data. On the other hand, in the $Λ$CDM model, the values of $Ω_{m,0}$ obtained from different observational data sets are consistent. In the analysis of this paper, we found that the Galileon model is less compatible with observations than the $Λ$CDM model. This result seems to be qualitatively the same in most of the generalized Galileon models in which Newton's constant is enhanced.

Fe-K line probing of material around the AGN central engine with Suzaku

We systematically analyzed the high-quality Suzaku data of 88 Seyfert galaxies. We obtained a clear relation between the absorption column density and the equivalent width of the 6.4 keV line above 10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$, suggesting a wide-ranging column density of $10^{23-24.5}$ cm$^{-2}$ with a similar solid and a Fe abundance of 0.7--1.3 solar for Seyfert 2 galaxies. We systematically analyzed the high-quality Suzaku data of 88 Seyfert galaxies. We obtained a clear relation between the absorption column density and the equivalent width of the 6.4 keV line above 10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$, suggesting a wide-ranging column density of $10^{23-24.5}$ cm$^{-2}$ with a similar solid and a Fe abundance of 0.7--1.3 solar for Seyfert 2 galaxies. The EW of the 6.4 keV line for Seyfert 1 galaxies are typically 40--120 eV, suggesting the existence of Compton-thick matter like the torus with a column density of $>10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ and a solid angle of $(0.15-0.4)*4pi$, and no difference of neutral matter is visible between Seyfert 1 and 2 galaxies. An absorber with a lower column density of $10^{21-23}$ cm$^{-2}$ for Compton-thin Seyfert 2 galaxies is suggested to be not a torus but an interstellar medium. These constraints can be understood by the fact that the 6.4 keV line intensity ratio against the 10--50 keV flux is almost identical within a range of 2--3 in many Seyfert galaxies. Interestingly, objects exist with a low EW, 10--30 eV, of the 6.4 keV line, suggesting that those torus subtends only a small solid angle of $<0.2*4pi$. Ionized Fe-K$α$ emission or absorption lines are detected from several percents of AGNs. Considering the ionization state and equivalent width, emitters and absorbers of ionized Fe-K lines can be explained by the same origin, and highly ionized matter is located at the broad line region. The rapid increase in EW of the ionized Fe-K emission lines at $N_{H}>10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ is found, like that of the cold material. It is found that these features seem to change for brighter objects with more than several $10^{44}$ erg/s such that the Fe-K line features become weak. We discuss this feature, together with the torus structure.

We present results from the Suzaku observation of the microquasar GRS 1915+105 performed during the 2005 October multiwavelength campaign. The data include both stable state (class χ) and limit-cycle oscillation (class θ). Correct interstellar absorption as well as effects of dust scattering are fully taken into account in the spectral analysis. The energy spectra in the 2-120 keV band in both states are all dominated by strong Comptonization of disk photons by an optically thick (τ~7-10) and low temperature (T_e ~2-3 keV) hybrid plasmas containing non-thermal electrons produced with 10-60% of the total power input. Absorption lines of highly ionized Fe ions detected during the oscillation indicate that a strong disk wind is developed. The ionization stage of the wind correlates with the X-ray flux, supporting the photoionization origin. The iron-K emission line shows a strong variability during the oscillation; the reflection is strongest during the dip but disappears during the flare. We interpret this as evidence for "self-shielding" that the Comptonizing corona becomes geometrically thick in the flare phase, preventing photons from irradiating the outer disk. The low-temperature and high luminosity disk emission suggests that the disk structure is similar to that in the very high state of canonical black hole binaries. The spectral variability during the oscillation is explained by the change of the disk geometry and of the physical parameters of Comptonizing corona, particularly the fractional power supplied to the acceleration of non-thermal particles.

Suzaku Hard X-ray Detector (HXD) achieved the lowest background level than any other previously or currently operational missions sensitive in the energy range of 10--600 keV, by utilizing PIN photodiodes and GSO scintillators mounted in the BGO active shields to reject particle background and Compton-scattered events as much as possible. Because it does not have imaging capability nor rocking mode for the background monitor, the sensitivity is limited by the reproducibility of the non X-ray background (NXB) model. We modeled the HXD NXB, which varies with time as well as other satellites with a low-earth orbit, by utilizing several parameters, including particle monitor counts and satellite orbital/attitude information. The model background is supplied as an event file in which the background events are generated by random numbers, and can be analyzed in the same way as the real data. The reproducibility of the NXB model depends on the event selection criteria (such as cut-off rigidity and energy band) and the integration time, and the 1sigma systematic error is estimated to be less than 3% (PIN 15--40 keV) and 1% (GSO 50--100 keV) for more than 10 ksec exposure.
