The helimagnetic order describes a non-collinear spin texture of antiferromagnets, arising from competing exchange interactions. Although collinear antiferromagnets are elemental building blocks of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronics, the potential of implementing spintronic functionality in non-collinear antiferromagnets has not been clarified thus far. Here, we propose an AFM helimagnet of EuCo2As2 as a novel single-phase spintronic material that exhibits a remarkable sign reversal of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). The contrast in the AMR arises from two electrically distinctive magnetic phases with spin reorientation driven by magnetic field lying on the easy-plane, which switches the sign of the AMR from positive to negative. Further, various AFM memory states associated with the evolution of the spin structure under magnetic fields were identified theoretically, based on an easy-plane anisotropic spin model. These results reveal that non-collinear antiferromagnets hold potential for develo** spintronic devices.

A spin valve is a prototype of spin-based electronic devices found on ferromagnets, in which an antiferromagnet plays a supporting role. Recent findings in antiferromagnetic spintronics show that an antiferromagnetic order in single-phase materials solely governs dynamic transport, and antiferromagnets are considered promising candidates for spintronic technology. In this work, we demonstrated antiferromagnet-based spintronic functionality on an itinerant Ising antiferromagnet of Ca0.9Sr0.1Co2As2 by integrating nanoscale spin-valve-type structure and investigating anisotropic magnetic properties driven by spin-flips. Multiple stacks of 1 nm thick spin-valve-like unit are intrinsically embedded in the antiferromagnetic spin structure. In the presence of a rotating magnetic field, a new type of the spin-valve-like operation was observed for large anomalous Hall conductivity and anisotropic magnetoresistance, whose effects are maximized above the spin-flip transition. In addition, a joint experimental and theoretical study provides an efficient tool to read out various spin states, which scheme can be useful for implementing extensive spintronic applications.

X-ray free electron lasers (XFEL) create femtosecond X-ray pulses with high brightness and high longitudinal coherence allowing to extend X-ray spectroscopy and scattering techniques into the ultrafast time-domain. These X-rays are a powerful probe for studying coherent quasiparticle excitations in condensed matter triggered by an impulsive optical laser pump. However, unlike coherent phonons, other quasiparticles have been rarely observed due to small signal changes and lack of standards for the identification. Here, we exploit resonant magnetic X-ray diffraction using an XFEL to visualize a photoexcited coherent magnon in space and time. Large intensity oscillations in antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic Bragg reflections from precessing moment are observed in a multiferroic Y-type hexaferrite. The precession trajectory reveals that a large, long-lived, photoinduced magnetic-field changes the net magnetization substantially through the large-amplitude of the magnon. This work demonstrates an efficient XFEL probe for the coherent magnon in the spotlight for opto-spintronics application.

Strongly correlated materials with multiple order parameters provide unique insights into the fundamental interactions in condensed matter systems and present opportunities for innovative technological applications. A class of antiferromagnetic honeycomb lattices compounds, A4B2O9 (A = Co, Fe, Mn; B = Nb, Ta), have been explored owing to the occurrence of linear magnetoelectricity. We observe a highly nonlinear magnetoelectric effect on single crystals of Co4Ta2O9 (CTO), distinctive from the linear behavior in the isostructural Co4Nb2O9. Ferroelectricity emerges primarily along the [110] direction under magnetic fields, with the onset of antiferromagnetic order at TN = 20.5 K. For in-plane magnetic field, a spin-flop occurs at HC ~ 0.3 T, above which the ferroelectric polarization gradually becomes negative and reaches a broad minimum. Upon increasing magnetic field further, the polarization crosses zero and increases continuously to ~60 uC/m2 at 9 T. In contrast, the polarization for a magnetic field perpendicular to the hexagonal plane increases monotonously and reaches ~80 uC/m2 at 9 T. This observation of a strongly nonlinear magnetoelectricity suggests that two types of inequivalent Co2+ sublattices generate magnetic field-dependent ferroelectric polarization with opposite signs. These results motivate fundamental and applied research on the intriguing magnetoelectric characteristics of these honeycomb lattice materials.

We investigated the anisotropy of the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of singlecrystalline double perovskite Tb2CoMnO6, which crystallizes in a monoclinic P21/n structure. Due to dissimilar magnetic anisotropy, the ferromagnetic order of the Co2+ and Mn4+ moments emerges along the c-axis at TC = 100 K, and the larger Tb3+ moments align perpendicular to the c-axis, below TTb = 15 K. The intricate temperature development of the metamagnetism along the c-axis results in a large negative change in the magnetic entropy at low temperature. On the other hand, the larger but almost reversible magnetization, perpendicular to the c-axis, results in a small and positive entropy change. This highly anisotropic magnetocaloric effect (MCE) leads to a giant rotational MCE, estimated to be 20.8 J/kg K. Our findings, based on the magnetic anisotropy in Tb2CoMnO6, enrich fundamental and applied research on magnetic materials, considering the distinct magnetic characteristics of double perovskites.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical usefulness of modulated arc (mARC) treatment techniques. The mARC treatment plans of the non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients were performed in order to verify the clinical usefulness of mARC. A pre study was conducted to find the most competent plan condition of mARC treatment and the usefulness of mARC treatment plan was evaluated by comparing it with the other Arc treatment plans such as Tomotherapy and RapidArc. In the case of mARC, the optimal condition for the mARC plan was determined by comparing the dosimetric performance of the mARC plans with the use of various parameters. The various parameters includes the photon energies (6 MV, 10 MV), optimization point angle (6°-10° intervals), and total segment number (36-59 segment). The best dosimetric performance of mARC was observed at 10 MV photon energy and the point angle 6 degree, and 59 segments. The each treatment plans of three different techniques were compared with the following parameters: conformity index (CI), homogeneity index (HI), target coverage, dose in the OARs, monitor units (MU), beam on time and the normal tissue complication probability (NTCP). As a result, all three different treatment techniques show the similar target coverage. The mARC results the lowest V20 and MU per fraction compared with both RapidArc and Tomotherapy plan. The mARC plan reduces the beam on time as well. Therefore, the results of this study provided a satisfactory result which mARC technique is considered as a useful clinical technique for radiation treatment.

This is a generalized version of the previously known soliton solutions of dark-bright pair. Here a dark soliton resides on a cnoidal wave instead of on a constant background. It also exhibits a new types of soliton solution in a self-focusing medium, which describes a breakup of a generalized dark-bright pair into another generalized dark-bright pair and an "oscillating" soliton. We calculate the shift of the crest of the cnoidal wave along a soliton and the moving direction of the soliton on a cnoidal wave.

In a context of group theory, we derive a general expression for infinitely many conserved currents and charges of the coupled higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The first few currents and charges are also presented explicitly. Due to the higher-order effects, conservation laws of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation are violated in general. The Bäcklund transformation for the three-level Maxwell-Bloch equation is presented in the matrix potential formalism. By applying the Bäcklund transformation to a constant electric field background, we obtain a general solution for matched pulses (a pair of solitary waves) which can emit or absorb a light velocity solitary pulse but otherwise propagate with their shapes invariant. In the special case, this solution describes a steady state pulse without emission or absorption, and becomes the matched pulse solution recently obtained by Hioe and Grobe. A nonlinear superposition rule is derived from the Bäcklund transformation and used for the explicit construction of two solitons as well as nonabelian breathers. Various new features of these solutions are addressed. In particular, we analyze in detail the scattering of "invertons", a specific pair of different wavelength solitons one of which moving with the velocity of light. Unlike the usual case of soliton scattering, the broader inverton changes its sign through the scattering. Surprisingly, the light velocity inverton receives time advance through the scattering thereby moving faster than light, which however does not violate causality.

We introduce a new notion of "matrix potential" to nonlinear optical systems. In terms of a matrix potential $g$, we present a gauge field theoretic formulation of the Maxwell-Bloch equation that provides a semiclassical description of the propagation of optical pulses through resonant multi-level media. We show that the Bloch part of the equation can solved identically through $g$ and the remaining Maxwell equation becomes a second order differential equation with reduced set of variables due to the gauge invariance of the system. Our formulation clarifies the (nonabelian) symmetry structure of the Maxwell-Bloch equations for various multi-level media in association with symmetric spaces $G/H$. In particular, we associate nondegenerate two-level system for self-induced transparency with $G/H=SU(2)/U(1)$ and three-level $Ł$- or V-systems with $G/H = SU(3)/U(2)$. We give a detailed analysis for the two-level case in the matrix potential formalism, and address various new properties of the system including soliton numbers, effective potential energy, gauge and discrete symmetries, modified pulse area, conserved topological and nontopological charges. The nontopological charge measures the amount of self-detuning of each pulse. Its conservation law leads to a new type of pulse stability analysis which explains nicely earlier numerical results.

In the massless limit, these fermions reduce to the free fermions introduced by Goddard, Nahm and Olive (GNO) in association with symmetric spaces $K/G$. A path integral formulation is given in terms of the Wess-Zumino-Witten action where the field variable $g$ takes value in the orthogonal, unitary, and symplectic representations of the group $G$ in the basis of the symmetric space. We show that, for example, such a path integral bosonization is possible when the symmetric spaces $K/G$ are $SU(N) \times SU(N)/SU(N); N \le 3, ~ Sp(2)/U(2)$ or $SO(8)/U(4)$. A Lagrangian formulation of these generalized sine-Gordon theories is given in terms of a deformed gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten action which also accounts for integrably perturbed coset conformal field theories. As for physical applications, we show that they become precisely the effective field theories of self-induced transparency in nonlinear optics. This provides a dictionary between field theory and nonlinear optics.

In terms of a nonabelian potential variable, we construct an effective field theory of self-induced transparency, a phenomenon of lossless coherent pulse propagation, in association with Hermitian symmetric spaces $G/H$. Various new properties of self-induced transparency, e.g. soliton numbers, effective potential energy, gauge symmetry and discrete symmetries, modified pulse area, conserved $U(1)$-charge etc. are addressed and elaborated in the nondegenerate two-level case where $G/H = SU(2)/U(1)$. Using the $U(1)$-charge conservation, a new type of analysis on pulse stability is given which agrees with earlier numerical results.

The symmetric space sine-Gordon models arise by conformal reduction of ordinary 2-dim $σ$-models, and they are integrable exhibiting a black-hole type metric in target space. We provide a Lagrangian formulation of these systems by considering a triplet of Lie groups $F \supset G \supset H$. We show that for every symmetric space $F/G$, the generalized sine-Gordon models can be derived from the $G/H$ WZW action, plus a potential term that is algebraically specified. Thus, the symmetric space sine-Gordon models describe certain integrable perturbations of coset conformal field theories at the classical level. We also briefly discuss their vacuum structure, Backlund transformations, and soliton solutions.

Abstract:
It is shown that the McCall-Hahn theory of self-induced transparency in coherent optical pulse propagation can be identified with the complex sine-Gordon theory in the sharp line limit. We reformulate the theory in terms of the deformed gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten sigma model and address various new aspects of self-induced transparency.

The Bäcklund transform and the nonlinear superposition rule for the complex sine-Gordon theory are presented and from which, exact solutions, solitons and breathers with U(1) charge, are derived. We clarify topological and nontopological nature of neutral and charged solitons respectively, and discuss about the duality between the vector and the axial U(1) charges.

Various classical aspects of the matrix sine-Gordon theory are addressed. We find exact solutions, solitons and breathers which generalize those of the sine-Gordon theory with internal degrees of freedom, by applying the Zakharov-Shabat dressing method and explain their physical properties. Infinite current conservation laws and the Bäcklund transformation of the theory are obtained from the zero curvature formalism of the equation of motion. From the Bäcklund transformation, we also derive exact solutions as well as a nonlinear superposition principle by making use of the Bianchi's permutability theorem.

In particular, the affine $(A_{1},SU(2))$-Toda theory describes the integrable deformation of the minimal conformal theory for the critical Ising model by the operator $Φ_{(2,1)}$. We derive infinite conserved charges and soliton solutions from the Lax pair of the affine $(A_{1}, SU(2))$-Toda theory. Another type of integrable deformation which accounts for the $Φ_{(3,1)}$-deformation of the minimal model is also found in the gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten context and its infinite conserved charges are given.

We investigate various boundary conditions in two dimensional turbulence systematically in the context of conformal field theory. Kee** the conformal invariance, we can either change the shape of boundaries through finite conformal transformations, or insert boundary operators so as to handle more general cases. Effects of such operations will be reflected in physically measurable quantities such as the energy power spectrum $E(k)$ or the average velocity profiles. We propose that these effects can be used as a possible test of conformal turbulence in an experimental setting. We also study the periodic boundary conditions, i.e. turbulence on a torus geometry. The dependence of moduli parameter $q$ appears explictly in the one point functions in the theory, which can also be tested.

Exact solutions of conformal turbulence restricted on a upper half plane are obtained. We show that the inertial range of homogeneous and isotropic turbulence with constant enstrophy flux develops in a distant region from the boundary. Thus in the presence of an anisotropic boundary, these exact solutions of turbulence generalize Kolmogorov's solution consistently and differ from the Polyakov's bulk case which requires a fine tunning of coefficients. The simplest solution in our case is given by the minimal model of $p=2, q=33$ and moreover we find a fixed point of solutions when $p,q$ become large.
