We have investigated the vortex dynamics in a thin film of an iron-based superconductor FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ by observing second-harmonic generation (SHG) in the THz frequency range. We visualized the picosecond trajectory of two-dimensional vortex motion in a pinning potential tilted by Meissner shielding current. The SHG perpendicular to the driving field is observed, corresponding to the nonreciprocal nonlinear Hall effect under the current-induced inversion symmetry breaking, whereas the linear Hall effect is negligible. The estimated vortex mass, as light as a bare electron, suggests that the vortex core moves independently from quasiparticles at such a high frequency and large velocity $\approx$300 km/s.

When the photoinjected carrier density exceeds $\sim$10$^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$, a cyclotron resonance is clearly observed, signifying the emergence of unusual carriers with 2000-times higher mobility than those in equilibrium. The result can be attributed to a drastic change in the band structure owing to screening of the electron correlation, highlighting the significant role of many-body effects in this kagome compound in equilibrium. Our study opens up a new phase of transport properties in correlated kagome materials under highly nonequilibrium conditions.

We have investigated the photoexcited transient responses of stripe-ordered phase in a cuprate superconductor, ${\rm La}_{1.6-x}{\rm Nd}_{0.4}{\rm Sr}_{x}{\rm CuO}_{4}~(x = 0.12)$ using optical-pump terahertz (THz)-probe spectroscopy. Upon the near-infrared photoexcitation with the electric field polarized along the $c$-axis, a clear plasma edge appears in the THz reflection spectrum along the $c$-axis with its position nearly coinciding with the Josephson plasma resonance of similarly doped ${\rm La}_{2-x}{\rm Sr}_{x}{\rm CuO}_{4}~(x = 0.125)$ in the low-temperature superconducting phase. The appearance of light-induced plasma edge sustains up to the onset temperature of the charge-stripe order, indicating the inherent interplay between the light-induced phase and the charge-stripe order. The optical conductivity spectrum of the light-induced state is mostly reproduced by the Drude model with a scattering rate as small as a few meV, and its imaginary part does not exhibit $1/ω$-divergence behavior in any temporal region after the photoexcitation. We discuss the possible origin of the observed coherent interlayer transport behavior as manifested by the narrow Drude response in the THz reflectivity along the $c$-axis.

Recent advancement in laser technology has opened the path toward the manipulation of functionalities in quantum materials by intense coherent light. Here, we study three-dimensional (3D) Dirac electrons driven by circularly polarized light (CPL), when the photon energy lies within the Dirac bands. As an experimental realization of this setup, we irradiate a thin film sample of elemental bismuth, which is a well-known semimetal hosting 3D Dirac electrons, with mid-infrared CPL. We successfully observe the emergence of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) via terahertz Faraday rotation that is both pump-helicity-dependent and instantaneous. We compare our experimental findings with the results of Floquet theory, which is a powerful framework for analyzing the electronic band structure driven by coherent light. The contribution from the band structures near the one-photon resonant positions to the AHE shows a field-strength dependence consistent with our experimental results. The effective Hamiltonian on which we base our model calculations also implies that a pair of "double Weyl points" emerge due to the CPL-induced hybridization between the occupied and unoccupied 3D Dirac bands. Our findings shed light on ultrafast control of material properties in nonlinear topological optics.

The concept of the chiral gauge field (CGF), originally developed in theoretical particle physics, has now emerged in condensed matter systems in materials known as Weyl semimetals. In general, Weyl semimetals emerge from Dirac semimetals when time-reversal or spatial-inversion symmetries are broken. Recently, it has gained a growing interest to manipulate such topological states of matter by implementing the CGF by shining light to materials. Here we have demonstrated the emergence of CGF in a massive 3D Dirac electron system in the paramagnetic phase of Co3Sn2S2, which exhibits a ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal phase at low temperatures. We first show theoretically that the illumination of circularly polarized light implements the CGF in the paramagnetic state of Co3Sn2S2 and gives rise to a topological Weyl state, which can be realized only in the nonequilibrium state. Then we demonstrated that the presence of light-induced CGF through the observation of light-induced anomalous Hall effect, the behavior of which quantitatively agrees with the calculation from the Floquet theory. The light-induced AHE manifests the Berry curvature which becomes nonzero as the bands split due to the light-induced CGF. Our demonstration paves a new pathway for ultrafast manipulation of topological phases in 3D Dirac semimetals and for further exploring new quantum matter phases which can be only achieved by light.

Recent observation of the light-induced superconducting (SC)-like transient response in the $c$-axis optical conductivity far above the SC transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO) has attracted great attention in the field of high-$T_{\mathrm{c}}$ superconductors. Since then, various theoretical and experimental studies have been devoted to elucidating its microscopic origin. One prominent fingerprint of the light-induced superconductivity is the emergence of $1/ω$-like spectral behavior in the imaginary part of the optical conductivity in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. However, the spectral profile can also be described by the Drude response of the quasiparticles (QPs) with a substantially low scattering rate. To circumvent this critical ambiguity, we investigated the light-induced nonequilibrium state in an underdoped YBCO sample with $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ of 61 K using the nonlinear THz optical response originating from the SC collective excitation of the ac-driven Josephson current. Upon the near-infrared (NIR) photoexcitation above $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ in the YBCO sample, the $1/ω$-like spectral behavior in the imaginary part of the optical conductivity emerges, consistent with the previous studies. However, the THz third-harmonic generation arising from the ac-driven Josephson current along the $c$-axis was absent in the NIR photoexcited state. These results indicate that the NIR-pump induced state exhibiting the $1/ω$-like response above $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ is distinct from the long-range ordered SC state in equilibrium. Based on these observations, the possible origins of the irregularly coherent charge carrier response along the $c$-axis induced by the photoexcitation are discussed.

We study optical responses of Leggett modes in multiband superconductors in the linear response regime. The Leggett mode is a collective mode unique to multiband superconductors that arises from relative phase fluctuations of superconducting orders for different bands. We use the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) description to study the collective modes in multiband systems. We find that multiband superconductors generally allow a linear coupling between the Leggett mode and external electric fields due to the presence of a cross term between different components of superconducting orders in the GL theory. The presence of a linear coupling for the Leggett mode is in sharp contrast with the absence of that for Higgs (amplitude) modes in single-band superconductors that only support nonlinear optical responses such as third harmonic generation (THG). We further confirm such a linear coupling in multiband superconductors by a more microscopic description based on a diagrammatic approach. We study the collective modes within the random phase approximation (RPA) and compute their contribution to the linear optical conductivity. These findings suggest a new route to observe the Leggett mode by optical absorption.

In the superconducting state a THz Kerr signal is observed and assigned to non-linear THz coupling to superconducting degrees of freedom. The polarization dependence of the THz Kerr signal is remarkably sensitive to the coexistence of a nematic order. In the absence of nematic order the $C_4$ symmetric polarization dependence of the THz Kerr signal is consistent with a coupling to the Higgs amplitude mode of the superconducting condensate. In the coexisting nematic and superconducting state the signal becomes purely nematic with a vanishing $C_4$ symmetric component, signaling the emergence of a new superconducting collective mode activated by nematicity.

We demonstrate that the phase of the second-harmonic (SH) signal flips when the direction of supercurrent is inverted, i.e., the signal is ascribed to the nonreciprocal response that occurs under broken $\mathcal{P}$- and $\mathcal{T}$-symmetries. The temperature dependence of the SH signal exhibits a sharp resonance, which is accounted for by the vortex motion driven by the THz electric field in an anharmonic pinning potential. The maximum conversion ratio $η_{\mathrm{SHG}}$ reaches $\approx10^{-2}$ in a thin film NbN with the thickness of 25 nm after the field cooling with a very small magnetic field of $\approx1$ Oe, for a relatively weak incident THz electric field of 2.8 kV/cm at 0.48 THz.

Superconducting (SC) fluctuations in cuprate superconductors have been extensively studied to gain a deep insight into preformed Cooper pairs above the SC transition temperature $T_{\text{c}}$. While the various measurements, such as the terahertz (THz) optical conductivity, Nernst effect, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements have provided the signature of the SC fluctuations, the onset temperature of the SC fluctuations depends on the measurement scheme. Here, we shed light on the Higgs mode to investigate the SC fluctuations, as it is the direct fingerprint of SC order parameter and can help elucidate the development of SC phase coherence. We perform THz pump-optical probe spectroscopy for underdoped and overdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ (Bi2212) thin films. The oscillatory behavior in the pump-probe signal (THz Kerr signal) observed in the SC phase has been identified as the Higgs mode in single crystals in our previous work [K. Katsumi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 117001 (2018)], but two onset temperatures are identified above $T_{\text{c}}$. Combined with the results of the single crystals in a wide range of do**, we find that the first onset $T_1^{\text{ons}}$ is 10-30 K above $T_{\text{c}}$. $T_1^{\text{ons}}$ coincides with that of the superfluid density $N_s$ extracted from the THz optical conductivity. Hence, $T_1^{\text{ons}}$ is interpreted as the onset of macroscopic SC phase stiffness. On the other hand, the second onset $T_2^{\text{ons}}$ is identified at substantially higher than $T_{\text{c}}$, whose origin is discussed in terms of preformed Cooper pairs.

When a continuous symmetry of a physical system is spontaneously broken, two types of collective modes typically emerge: the amplitude and phase modes of the order-parameter fluctuation. For superconductors, the amplitude mode is recently referred to as the ''Higgs mode'' as it is a condensed-matter analogue of a Higgs boson in particle physics. Higgs mode is a scalar excitation of the order parameter, distinct from charge or spin fluctuations, and thus does not couple to electromagnetic fields linearly. This is why the Higgs mode in superconductors has evaded experimental observations over a half century after the initial theoretical prediction, except for a charge-density-wave coexisting system. With the advance of nonlinear and time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy techniques, however, it has become possible to study the Higgs mode through the nonlinear light-Higgs coupling. In this review, we overview recent progresses on the study of the Higgs mode in superconductors.

The hole density decreases below the structural transition temperature while electron density increases, which is attributed to the band structure modification in the electronic nematic phase. The scattering time of the hole carrier becomes substantially longer than that of the electron at lower temperature, which accounts for the increase of the positive dc Hall coefficient at low temperature.

In multiband superconductors, multiple collective modes exist associated with the multiple order parameters. Oscillations of the amplitude and the relative phase of the order parameters are called Higgs and Leggett modes, respectively. Recently, it has been suggested that nonmagnetic impurity scattering would enhance nonlinear coupling between the Higgs mode and an electromagnetic wave with a frequency located in the superconducting gap region, while its effect on the Leggett mode is still unresolved. Here, we theoretically investigated the nonlinear optical response of multiband Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-type superconductors in the presence of nonmagnetic impurities with a density matrix approach extending the Mattis-Bardeen model of linear response. We found that the drastic enhancement of nonlinear optical response due to the nonmagnetic impurity scattering occurs only for the Higgs modes and not for the Leggett mode. As a result, both the light-induced dynamics of the superconducting gaps and the resulting third-harmonic generation are dominated by the Higgs modes. We also examined the role of quasiparticle excitations to find that they give the subdominant contribution to the third-harmonic generation.

In high energy physics, the Higgs field couples to gauge bosons and fermions and gives mass to their elementary excitations. Experimentally, such couplings can be inferred from the decay product of the Higgs boson, i.e. the scalar (amplitude) excitation of the Higgs field. In superconductors, Cooper pairs bear a close analogy to the Higgs field. Interaction between the Cooper pairs and other degrees of freedom provides dissipation channel for the amplitude mode, which may reveal important information about the microscopic pairing mechanism. To this end, we investigate the Higgs (amplitude) mode of several cuprate thin films using phase-resolved terahertz third harmonic generation (THG). In addition to the heavily damped Higgs mode itself, we observe a universal jump in the phase of the driven Higgs oscillation as well as a non-vanishing THG above Tc. These findings indicate coupling of the Higgs mode to other collective modes and potentially a nonzero pairing amplitude above Tc.

With increasing the photoexcitation intensities, the Josephson plasma resonance shows a gradual redshift, indicating the suppression of superconductivity by the photoexcitation. With further increasing the photoexcitation intensities, a new longitudinal mode in the loss function spectrum appears and grows from the high energy side, accompanied by a new transverse mode as manifested in the conductivity spectrum. The observed spectra are described by the multilayer model with alternating interlayer Josephson couplings. The new longitudinal and transverse modes sustain much longer than several hundred picoseconds after the photoexcitation, indicating that the new metastable phase with possessing alternating interlayer Josephson couplings is induced by the strong photoexcitation.

We investigated the terahertz (THz)-pulse driven nonlinear response in the d-wave cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi2212) using a THz pump near-infrared probe scheme in the time domain. We have observed an oscillatory behavior of the optical reflectivity that follows the THz electric field squared and is strongly enhanced below Tc. The corresponding third-order nonlinear effect exhibits both A1g and B1g symmetry components, which are decomposed from polarization-resolved measurements. Comparison with a BCS calculation of the nonlinear susceptibility indicates that the A1g component is associated with the Higgs mode of the d-wave order parameter.

We performed a rate equation analysis on the dynamics of exciton Mott transition (EMT) with assuming a detailed balance between excitons and unbound electron-hole (e-h) pairs. Based on the Saha equation with taking into account the empirical expression for the band-gap renormalization effect caused by the unbound e-h pairs, we show that the ionization ratio of excitons exhibits a bistability as a function of total e-h pair density at low temperatures. We demonstrate that an incubation time emerges in the dynamics of EMT from oversaturated exciton gas phase on the verge of the bistable region. The incubation time shows a slowing down behavior when the pair density approaches toward the saddle-node bifurcation of the hysteresis curve of the exciton ionization ratio.

Recent advances in time-domain terahertz (THz) spectroscopy have unveiled that resonantly-enhanced strong THz third-harmonic generation (THG) mediated by the collective Higgs amplitude mode occurs in s-wave superconductors, where charge-density fluctuations (CDF) have also been shown to contribute to the nonlinear third-order susceptibility. It has been theoretically proposed that the nonlinear responses of Higgs and CDF exhibit essentially different polarization dependences. Here we experimentally discriminate the two contributions by polarization-resolved intense THz transmission spectroscopy for a single-crystal NbN film. The result shows that the resonant THG in the transmitted light always appears in the polarization parallel to that of the incident light with no appreciable crystal axis dependence. When we compare this with the theoretical calculation here with the BCS approximation and the dynamical mean-field theory for a model of NbN constructed from first principles, the experimental result strongly indicates that the Higgs mode rather than the CDF dominates the THG resonance in NbN. A possible mechanism for this is discussed such as the retardation effect in the phonon-mediated pairing interaction beyond BCS.

Ultrafast responses of BCS superconductor Nb1-xTixN films in a nonadiabatic excitation regime were investigated by using terahertz (THz) pump-THz probe spectroscopy. After an instantaneous excitation with the monocycle THz pump pulse, a transient oscillation emerges in the electromagnetic response in the BCS gap energy region. The oscillation frequency coincides with the asymptotic value of the BCS gap energy, indicating the appearance of the theoretically-anticipated collective amplitude mode of the order parameter, namely the Higgs amplitude mode. Our result opens a new pathway to the ultrafast manipulation of the superconducting order parameter by optical means.

Right- and left-handed circularly polarized light interact differently with electronic charges in chiral materials. This asymmetry generates the natural circular dichroism and gyrotropy, also known as the optical activity. Here we demonstrate that optical activity is not a privilege of the electronic charge excitations but it can also emerge for the spin excitations in magnetic matter. The square-lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$ offers an ideal arena to test this idea, since it can be transformed to a chiral form by application of external magnetic fields. As a direct proof of the field-induced chiral state, we observed large optical activity when the light is in resonance with spin excitations at sub-terahertz frequencies. In addition, we found that the magnetochiral effect, the absorption difference for the light beams propagating parallel and anti-parallel to the applied magnetic field, has an exceptionally large amplitude close to 100%. All these features are ascribed to the magnetoelectric nature of spin excitations as they interact both with the electric and magnetic components of light.

We investigated the photoexcited carrier dynamics in Si by using optical pump and terahertz probe spectroscopy in an energy range between 2 meV and 25 meV. The formation dynamics of excitons from unbound e-h pairs was studied through the emergence of the 1s-2p transition of excitons at 12 meV (3 THz). We revealed the thermalization mechanism of the photo-injected hot carriers (electrons and holes) in the low temperature lattice system by taking account of the interband and intraband scattering of carriers with acoustic and optical phonons. The overall cooling rate of electrons and holes was numerically calculated on the basis of a microscopic analysis of the phonon scattering processes, and the results well account for the experimentally observed carrier cooling dynamics. The long formation time of excitons in Si after the above-gap photoexcitation is reasonably accounted for by the thermalization process of photoexcited carriers.

One of these electromagnon is ascribed to the zone-edge magnon mode based on the calculated magnon dispersions.

Recent spectroscopic studies at terahertz frequencies for a variety of multiferroics endowed with both ferroelectric and magnetic orders have revealed the possible emergence of a new collective excitation, frequently referred to as electromagnon. It is magnetic origin, but becomes active in response to the electric field component of light. Here we give an overview on our recent advance in the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy of electromagnons or electric-dipole active magnetic resonances, focused on perovskite manganites--$R$MnO$_3$ ($R$ denotes rare-earth ions). The respective electric and magnetic contributions to the observed magnetic resonance are firmly identified by the measurements of the light-polarization dependence using a complete set of the crystal orientations. We extract general optical features in a variety of the spin ordered phases, including the $A$-type antiferromagnetic, collinear spin ordered, and ferroelectric $bc$ and $ab$ spiral spin ordered phases, which are realized by tuning the chemical composition of $R$, temperature, and external magnetic field. In addition to the antiferromagnetic resonances of Mn ions driven by the magnetic field component of light, we clarify that the electromagnon appears only for light polarized along the a-axis even in the collinear spin ordered phase and grows in intensity with evolution of the spiral spin order, but independent of the direction of the spiral spin plane ($bc$ or $ab$) or equivalently the direction of the ferroelectric polarization $P_{\rm s}$ ($P_{\rm s}\| c$ or $P_{\rm s}\| a$). A possible origin of the observed magnetic resonances at terahertz frequencies is discussed by comparing the systematic experimental data presented here with theoretical considerations based on Heisenberg model.

Such an electric-dipole active spin excitation as observed at THz frequencies can be ascribed to the two-magnon excitation in terms of the unique polarization selection rule in a variety of the magnetically ordered phases.

We identify the pronounced absorption continuum (1--8 meV) with a peak feature around 2 meV, which is electric-dipole active only for the light $E$-vector along the a-axis. This absorption band grows in intensity with lowering temperature from the spin-collinear paraelectric phase above the ferroelectric transition, but is independent of the orientation of spiral spin plane ($bc$ or $ab$), as shown on the original $P_{\rm s}$ (ferroelectric polarization) $\parallel c$ phase as well as the magnetic field induced $P_{\rm s}\parallel a$ phase. The possible origin of this electric-dipole active band is argued in terms of the large fluctuations of spins and spin-current.

The temporal profiles of the transmittance and of the demagnetization measured by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy are found to coincide. Well below the Curie temperature, the maximum amplitude of the slow component of the differential transmittance as a function of the probe energy is on the rising edge of the linear absorption peak, suggesting that ferromagnetic ordering can be explained by a coupling of the Mn local spins through bound magnetic polarons.

The dynamics of magnetization under femtosecond optical excitation is studied in a ferromagnetic semiconductor Ga_{0.94}Mn_{0.06}As with a time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect measurement with two color probe beams. The transient reflectivity change indicates the rapid rise of the carrier temperature and relaxation to a quasi-thermal equilibrium within 1 ps, while a very slow rise of the spin temperature of the order of 500ps is observed. This anomalous behavior originates from the thermal isolation between the charge and spin systems due to the spin polarization of carriers (holes) contributing to ferromagnetism. This constitutes experimental proof of the half-metallic nature of ferromagnetic Ga_{0.94}Mn_{0.06}As arising from double exchange type mechanism originates from the d-band character of holes.
