Capturing a 3D human body is one of the important tasks in computer vision with a wide range of applications such as virtual reality and sports analysis. However, conventional frame cameras are limited by their temporal resolution and dynamic range, which imposes constraints in real-world application setups. Event cameras have the advantages of high temporal resolution and high dynamic range (HDR), but the development of event-based methods is necessary to handle data with different characteristics. This paper proposes a novel event-based method for 3D pose estimation and human mesh recovery. Prior work on event-based human mesh recovery require frames (images) as well as event data. The proposed method solely relies on events; it carves 3D voxels by moving the event camera around a stationary body, reconstructs the human pose and mesh by attenuated rays, and fit statistical body models, preserving high-frequency details. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms conventional frame-based methods in the estimation accuracy of both pose and body mesh. We also demonstrate results in challenging situations where a conventional camera has motion blur. This is the first to demonstrate event-only human mesh recovery, and we hope that it is the first step toward achieving robust and accurate 3D human body scanning from vision sensors. https://florpeng.github.io/event-based-human-scan/

Schlieren imaging is an optical technique to observe the flow of transparent media, such as air or water, without any particle seeding. However, conventional frame-based techniques require both high spatial and temporal resolution cameras, which impose bright illumination and expensive computation limitations. Event cameras offer potential advantages (high dynamic range, high temporal resolution, and data efficiency) to overcome such limitations due to their bio-inspired sensing principle. This paper presents a novel technique for perceiving air convection using events and frames by providing the first theoretical analysis that connects event data and schlieren. We formulate the problem as a variational optimization one combining the linearized event generation model with a physically-motivated parameterization that estimates the temporal derivative of the air density. The experiments with accurately aligned frame- and event camera data reveal that the proposed method enables event cameras to obtain on par results with existing frame-based optical flow techniques. Moreover, the proposed method works under dark conditions where frame-based schlieren fails, and also enables slow-motion analysis by leveraging the event camera's advantages. Our work pioneers and opens a new stack of event camera applications, as we publish the source code as well as the first schlieren dataset with high-quality frame and event data. https://github.com/tub-rip/event_based_bos

Optical flow estimation methods that work on packets of events trade off speed for accuracy, while event-by-event (incremental) methods have strong assumptions and have not been tested on common benchmarks that quantify progress in the field. Towards applications on resource-constrained devices, it is important to develop optical flow algorithms that are fast, light-weight and accurate. This work leverages insights from neuroscience, and proposes a novel optical flow estimation scheme based on triplet matching. The experiments on publicly available benchmarks demonstrate its capability to handle complex scenes with comparable results as prior packet-based algorithms. In addition, the proposed method achieves the fastest execution time (> 10 kHz) on standard CPUs as it requires only three events in estimation. We hope that our research opens the door to real-time, incremental motion estimation methods and applications in real-world scenarios.

Contrast maximization (CMax), which provides state-of-the-art accuracy on motion estimation using events, may suffer from an overfitting problem called event collapse. Prior works are computationally expensive or cannot alleviate the overfitting, which undermines the benefits of the CMax framework. We propose a novel, computationally efficient regularizer based on geometric principles to mitigate event collapse. The experiments show that the proposed regularizer achieves state-of-the-art accuracy results, while its reduced computational complexity makes it two to four times faster than previous approaches. To the best of our knowledge, our regularizer is the only effective solution for event collapse without trading off runtime. We hope our work opens the door for future applications that unlocks the advantages of event cameras.

Following recent image-based deep-learning achievements, optical flow estimation methods for event cameras have rushed to combine those image-based methods with event data. However, it requires several adaptations (data conversion, loss function, etc.) as they have very different properties. We develop a principled method to extend the Contrast Maximization framework to estimate optical flow from events alone. We investigate key elements: how to design the objective function to prevent overfitting, how to warp events to deal better with occlusions, and how to improve convergence with multi-scale raw events. With these key elements, our method ranks first among unsupervised methods on the MVSEC benchmark, and is competitive on the DSEC benchmark. Moreover, our method allows us to expose the issues of the ground truth flow in those benchmarks, and produces remarkable results when it is transferred to unsupervised learning settings. Contrast maximization (CMax) is a framework that provides state-of-the-art results on several event-based computer vision tasks, such as ego-motion or optical flow estimation. However, it may suffer from a problem called event collapse, which is an undesired solution where events are warped into too few pixels. As prior works have largely ignored the issue or proposed workarounds, it is imperative to analyze this phenomenon in detail. Our work demonstrates event collapse in its simplest form and proposes collapse metrics by using first principles of space-time deformation based on differential geometry and physics. We experimentally show on publicly available datasets that the proposed metrics mitigate event collapse and do not harm well-posed warps. To the best of our knowledge, regularizers based on the proposed metrics are the only effective solution against event collapse in the experimental settings considered, compared with other methods. We hope that this work inspires further research to tackle more complex warp models.

This paper aims at providing the summary of the Global Data Science Project (GDSC) for COVID-19. as on May 31 2020. COVID-19 has largely impacted on our societies through both direct and indirect effects transmitted by the policy measures to counter the spread of viruses. We quantitatively analysed the multifaceted impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on our societies including people's mobility, health, and social behaviour changes. People's mobility has changed significantly due to the implementation of travel restriction and quarantine measurements. Indeed, the physical distance has widened at international (cross-border), national and regional level. At international level, due to the travel restrictions, the number of international flights has plunged overall at around 88 percent during March. In particular, the number of flights connecting Europe dropped drastically in mid of March after the United States announced travel restrictions to Europe and the EU and participating countries agreed to close borders, at 84 percent decline compared to March 10th. Similarly, we examined the impacts of quarantine measures in the major city: Tokyo (Japan), New York City (the United States), and Barcelona (Spain). Within all three cities, we found the significant decline in traffic volume. We also identified the increased concern for mental health through the analysis of posts on social networking services such as Twitter and Instagram. Notably, in the beginning of April 2020, the number of post with #depression on Instagram doubled, which might reflect the rise in mental health awareness among Instagram users. Besides, we identified the changes in a wide range of people's social behaviors, as well as economic impacts through the analysis of Instagram data and primary survey data.

We demonstrate the first reinforcement-learning application for robots equipped with an event camera. Because of the considerably lower latency of the event camera, it is possible to achieve much faster control of robots compared with the existing vision-based reinforcement-learning applications using standard cameras. To handle a stream of events for reinforcement learning, we introduced an image-like feature and demonstrated the feasibility of training an agent in a simulator for two tasks: fast collision avoidance and obstacle tracking. Finally, we set up a robot with an event camera in the real world and then transferred the agent trained in the simulator, resulting in successful fast avoidance of randomly thrown objects. Incorporating event camera into reinforcement learning opens new possibilities for various robotics applications that require swift control, such as autonomous vehicles and drones, through end-to-end learning approaches.

Theoretical understanding of how deep neural network (DNN) extracts features from input images is still unclear, but it is widely believed that the extraction is performed hierarchically through a process of coarse-graining. It reminds us of the basic concept of renormalization group (RG) in statistical physics. In order to explore possible relations between DNN and RG, we use the Restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM) applied to Ising model and construct a flow of model parameters (in particular, temperature) generated by the RBM. We show that the unsupervised RBM trained by spin configurations at various temperatures from $T=0$ to $T=6$ generates a flow along which the temperature approaches the critical value $T_c=2.27$. This behavior is opposite to the typical RG flow of the Ising model. By analyzing various properties of the weight matrices of the trained RBM, we discuss why it flows towards $T_c$ and how the RBM learns to extract features of spin configurations.

We show that these equations of motion have solutions in terms of the coordinates on M2- and M5-branes. We also discuss the geometric equations, and show that there are static solutions when M2- or M5-brane exists alone and also when M5-brane wraps around M2-brane. This situation is realized because our Einstein-like equation contains an extra term which can be interpreted as gravitational energy contributing to the curvature, thus avoiding the usual intersection rule.

Hence it may provide the microscopic description of the black branes ($p$-soup proposal). This fact motivates us to test this proposal in the intersecting black branes which have multiple brane charges and/or momentum along the brane direction. We consider the case that the multiple branes satisfy the intersection rule and feel no force when they are static, and find the agreement to the black hole thermodynamics.

Maximally supersymmetric (p+1)-dimensional Yang-Mills theory at large N and finite temperature, with possibly compact spatial directions, has a rich phase structure. Strongly coupled phases may have holographic descriptions as black branes in various string duality frames, or there may be no gravity dual. In this paper we provide tools in the gauge theory which give a simple and unified picture of the various strongly coupled phases, and transitions between them. Building on our previous work we consider the effective theory describing the moduli of the gauge theory, which can be computed precisely when it is weakly coupled far out on the Coulomb branch. Whilst for perturbation theory naive extrapolation from weak coupling to strong gives little information, for this moduli theory naive extrapolation from its weakly to its strongly coupled regime appears to encode a surprising amount of information about the various strongly coupled phases. We argue it encodes not only the parametric form of thermodynamic quantities for these strongly coupled phases, but also certain transcendental factors with a geometric origin, and allows one to deduce transitions between the phases. We emphasise it also gives predictions for the behaviour of a large class of local operators in these phases.

We consider a model of D-dimensional supergravity coupled to elementary p-branes. We use gravitational arguments to deduce the low energy effective theory of N nearly parallel branes. This is a (p+1)-dimensional scalar field theory, where the scalars represent the positions of the branes in their transverse space. We propose that the same theory in a certain temperature regime describes a `soup' of strongly interacting branes, giving a microscopic description of near extremal black p-branes. We use natural approximations to estimate the energy density of this soup as a function of the physical parameters; N, temperature, brane tension and gravitational coupling. We also characterise the horizon radius, measured in the metric natural to the branes, with the thermal vev of the scalars. For both quantities we find agreement with the corresponding supergravity black brane results. Surprisingly, beyond the physical parameters, we are naturally able to reproduce certain irrational factors such as pi's. We comment on how these ideas may explain why black hole thermodynamics arises in gauge theories with holographic duals at finite temperature.

We explore the proposal that the six-dimensional (2,0) theory on the Riemann surface with irregular punctures leads to a four-dimensional gauge theory coupled to the isolated N=2 superconformal theories of Argyres-Douglas type, and to two-dimensional conformal field theory with irregular states. Following the approach of Gaiotto-Teschner for the Virasoro case, we construct W_3 irregular states by colliding a single SU(3) puncture with several regular punctures of simple type. If n simple punctures are colliding with the SU(3) puncture, the resulting irregular state is a simultaneous eigenvector of the positive modes L_n, ..., L_{2n} and W_{2n}, ..., W_{3n} of the W_3 algebra. We find the corresponding isolated SCFT with an SU(3) flavor symmetry as a nontrivial IR fixed point on the Coulomb branch of the SU(3) linear quiver gauge theories, by confirming that its Seiberg-Witten curve correctly predicts the conditions for the W_3 irregular states. We also compare these SCFT's with the ones obtained from the BPS quiver method.

Our approach is based on a localization method, which reduces the problem to the simulation of a simple matrix model. The new approach opens up the possibility of probing the quantum aspects of M-theory and testing the AdS_4/CFT_3 duality at the quantum level. We give some evidences which imply that W(1+infinity) algebra describes the symmetry behind AGT(-W) conjecture: a correspondence between the partition function of N=2 supersymmetric quiver gauge theories and the correlators of Liouville (Toda) field theory.

We derive the super Yang-Mills action of Dp-branes on a torus T^{p-4} from the nonabelian (2,0) theory with Lie 3-algebra. Our realization is based on Lie 3-algebra with pairs of Lorentzian metric generators. The resultant theory then has negative norm modes, but it results in a unitary theory by setting VEV's of these modes. This procedure corresponds to the torus compactification, therefore by taking a transformation which is equivalent to T-duality, the Dp-brane action is obtained. We also study type IIA/IIB NS5-brane and Kaluza-Klein monopole systems by taking other VEV assignments. Such various compactifications can be realized in the nonabelian (2,0) theory, since both longitudinal and transverse directions can be compactified, which is different from the BLG theory. We finally discuss U-duality among these branes, and show that most of the moduli parameters in U-duality group are recovered. Especially in D5-brane case, the whole U-duality relation is properly reproduced.

Authors:

Abstract:
At a 3/2-cusp of a given plane curve $γ(t)$, both of the Euclidean curvature $κ_g$ and the affine curvature $κ_A$ diverge. In this paper, we show that each of $\sqrt{|s_g|}κ_g$ and $(s_A)^2 κ_A$ (called the Euclidean and affine normalized curvature, respectively) at a 3/2-cusp is a smooth function of the variable $t$, where $s_g$ (resp. $s_A$) is the Euclidean (resp. affine) arclength parameter of…

Moreover, we give a characterization of the behaviour of the curvature functions $κ_g$ and $κ_A$ at 3/2-cusps. On the other hand, inflection points are also singular points of curves in affine geometry. We give a similar characterization of affine curvature functions near generic inflection points. As an application, new affine invariants of 3/2-cusps and generic inflection points are given.

In particular, we derive the explicit form of 5-point correlation functions in the lower orders and confirm the agreement with Nekrasov's partition function for SU(3)xSU(3) quiver gauge theory. The algorithm to derive the correlation functions can be applied to general n-point function in A_2 Toda theory which will be useful to establish the relation for more generic quivers. Partial analysis is also given for SU(3)xSU(2) case and we comment on some technical issues which need clarification before establishing the relation.

Here the 3-algebra was a generalized one with d+1 pairs of Lorentzian metric generators and expressed in terms of a loop algebra with central extensions. In this paper, we derive the precise relation between the coupling constant of the super Yang-Mills, the moduli of T^d and some R-R flux with VEV's of ghost fields associated with Lorentzian metric generators. In particular, for d=1, we derive the Yang-Mills action with theta term and show that SL(2,Z) Montonen-Olive duality is realized as the rotation of two VEV's. Furthermore, some moduli parameters such as NS-NS 2-form flux are identified as the deformation parameters of the 3-algebras. By combining them, we recover most of the moduli parameters which are required by U-duality symmetry.

We show that such a system in general describes a supersymmetric massive vector multiplets after the ghost fields are Higgsed. Simple systems with nontrivial interaction are realized by infinite dimensional Lie 3-algebras associated with the loop algebras. The massive fields are then naturally identified with the Kaluza-Klein modes by the toroidal compactification triggered by the ghost fields. For example, Dp-brane with an (infinite dimensional) affine Lie algebra symmetry $\hat g$ can be identified with D(p+1)-brane with gauge symmetry $g$.

We investigate the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson model associated with the Nambu-Poisson algebra as a theory describing a single M5-brane. We argue that the model is a gauge theory associated with the volume-preserving diffeomorphism in the three-dimenisonal internal space. We derive gauge transformations, actions, supersymmetry transformations, and equations of motions in terms of six-dimensional fields. The equations of motions are written in gauge-covariant form, and the equations for tensor fields have manifest self-dual structure. We demonstrate that the double dimensional reduction of the model reproduces the non-commutative U(1) gauge theory on a D4-brane with a small non-commutativity parameter. We establish relations between parameters in the BLG model and those in M-theory. This shows that the model describes an M5-brane in a large C-field background.

The N2H+, HC3N, and NH3 lines are detected toward most of the objects. On the other hand, the CCS emission is detected toward none of the objects. The [CCS]/[N2H+] ratios are found to be mostly lower than unity even in the Spitzer 24 micron dark objects. This suggests that most of the massive clumps are chemically more evolved than the low-mass starless cores. The CH3OH emission is detected toward 18 out of 55 objects. All the CH3OH-detected objects are associated with the Spitzer 24 micron sources, suggesting that star formation has already started in all the CH3OH-detected objects. The velocity widths of the CH3OH J_K=7_0-6_0 A+ and 7_{-1}-6_{-1} E lines are broader than those of N2H+ J=1-0. The CH3OH J_K=7_0-6_0 A+ and 7_{-1}-6_{-1} E lines tend to have broader linewidth in the MSX dark objects than in the others, the former being younger or less luminous than the latter. The origin of the broad emission is discussed in terms of the interaction between an outflow and an ambient cloud.
