We design a motion planning algorithm to coordinate the movements of two robots along a figure eight track, in such a way that no collisions occur. We use a topological approach to robot motion planning that relates instabilities in motion planning algorithms to topological features of configuration spaces. The topological complexity of a configuration space is an invariant that measures the complexity of motion planning algorithms. We show that the topological complexity of our problem is 3 and construct an explicit algorithm with three continuous instructions.

Abstract:
Using novel approaches to dataset development, the Biasly dataset captures the nuance and subtlety of misogyny in ways that are unique within the literature. Built in collaboration with multi-disciplinary experts and annotators themselves, the dataset contains annotations of movie subtitles, capturing colloquial expressions of misogyny in North American film. The dataset can be used for a range of NLP tasks, including classification, severity score regression, and text generation for rewrites. In this paper, we discuss the methodology used, analyze the annotations obtained, and provide baselines using common NLP algorithms in the context of misogyny detection and mitigation. We hope this work will promote AI for social good in NLP for bias detection, explanation, and removal.

Abstract:
We present observations of the 1.35+/-0.07 Earth-radius planet L 98-59 c using Wide Field Camera~3 on the Hubble Space Telescope. L 98-59 is a nearby (10.6 pc), bright (H=7.4 mag), M3V star that harbors three small, transiting planets. As one of the closest known transiting multi-planet systems, L 98-59 offers one of the best opportunities to probe and compare the atmospheres of rocky planets that…

As one of the closest known transiting multi-planet systems, L 98-59 offers one of the best opportunities to probe and compare the atmospheres of rocky planets that formed in the same stellar environment. We measured the transmission spectrum of L 98-59 c during a single transit, with the extracted spectrum showing marginal evidence for wavelength-dependent transit depth variations which would indicate the presence of an atmosphere. Forward modeling was used to constrain possible atmospheric compositions of the planet based on the shape of the transmission spectrum. Although L 98-59 is a fairly quiet star, we have seen evidence for stellar activity, and therefore we cannot rule out a scenario where the source of the signal originates with inhomogeneities on the host-star surface. While intriguing, our results are inconclusive and additional data is needed to verify any atmospheric signal. Fortunately, additional data will soon be collected from both HST and JWST. Should this result be confirmed with additional data, L 98-59 c would be the first planet smaller than 2 Earth-radii with a detected atmosphere, and among the first small planets with a known atmosphere to be studied in detail by the JWST.

Abstract:

We present a comprehensive analysis of the 0.3--5\,$μ$m transit spectrum for the inflated hot Jupiter HAT-P-41b. The planet was observed in transit with Hubble STIS and WFC3 as part of the Hubble Panchromatic Comparative Exoplanet Treasury (PanCET) program, and we combine those data with warm \textit{Spitzer} transit observations. We extract transit depths from each of the data sets, presenting the STIS transit spectrum (0.29--0.93\,$μ$m) for the first time. We retrieve the transit spectrum both with a free-chemistry retrieval suite (AURA) and a complementary chemical equilibrium retrieval suite (PLATON) to constrain the atmospheric properties at the day-night terminator. Both methods provide an excellent fit to the observed spectrum. Both AURA and PLATON retrieve a metal-rich atmosphere for almost all model assumptions (most likely O/H ratio of $\log_{10}{Z/Z_{\odot}} = 1.46^{+0.53}_{-0.68}$ and $\log_{10}{Z/Z_{\odot}} = 2.33^{+0.23}_{-0.25}$, respectively); this is driven by a 4.9-$σ$ detection of H$_2$O as well as evidence of gas absorption in the optical ($>$2.7-$σ$ detection) due to Na, AlO and/or VO/TiO, though no individual species is strongly detected. Both retrievals determine the transit spectrum to be consistent with a clear atmosphere, with no evidence of haze or high-altitude clouds. Interior modeling constraints on the maximum atmospheric metallicity ($\log_{10}{Z/Z_{\odot}} < 1.7$) favor the AURA results. The inferred elemental oxygen abundance suggests that HAT-P-41b has one of the most metal-rich atmospheres of any hot Jupiters known to date. Overall, the inferred high metallicity and high inflation make HAT-P-41b an interesting test case for planet formation theories.

Abstract:
In 2000, Rees and Shalaby constructed simple indecomposable two-fold cyclic triple systems for all v congruent to 0, 1, 3, 4, 7, and 9 (mod 12) where v = 4 or v>11, using Skolem-type sequences. We construct, using Skolem-type sequences, three-fold triple systems having the properties of being cyclic, simple, and indecomposable for all admissible orders v, with some possible exceptions for v = 9 an…

We construct, using Skolem-type sequences, three-fold triple systems having the properties of being cyclic, simple, and indecomposable for all admissible orders v, with some possible exceptions for v = 9 and v = 24c + 57, where c >1 is a constant. To prove the simplicity we used a Mathematica computer program. We list in the Appendix the code and the results of the program.
