A recent experiment observes a series of quantum spin Hall effects in transition metal dichalcogenide moiré MoTe$_2$ [K. Kang, \textit{et. al}, Nature 628, 522-526 (2024)]. Among them, the filling $ν=3$ state points to a time-reversal pair of edge states resembling those of the even-denominator fractional Chern insulators (FCIs). Inspired by this discovery, we investigate whether a robust incompressible quantum Hall liquid can be stabilized in the half-filled Chern band of twisted MoTe$_2$ bilayers. We use the continuum model with parameters relevant to twisted MoTe$_2$ bilayers and obtain three consecutive nearly flat Chern bands with the same Chern number. Crucially, when the second moiré miniband is half-filled, signatures of non-Abelian states are found via exact diagonalization calculations, including the stable six-fold ground state degeneracy which grows more robust for larger lattice sizes and is consistent with an even-denominator FCI state. We further perform flux insertion simulations to reveal a 1/2 quantized many-body Chern number as direct evidence of topological order. Furthermore, the ground state density structure factors show no sharp peak, indicating no charge density wave order. These evidences signal the potential of realizing the non-Abelian state at zero magnetic field in twisted bilayer MoTe$_2$ at the fractional hole filling 3/2.

We study twisted bilayer MoTe$_2$ systems at fractional fillings of the lowest hole band under applied out-of-plane displacement fields. By employing exact diagonalization in finite-size systems, we systematically map out the ground state quantum phase diagram for two filling fractions, $ν=1/3$ and $2/3$, and provide a detailed characterization of each phase. We identify the phase transition between a fractional Chern insulator (FCI) and a layer-polarized charge density wave (CDW) at a filling fraction of $ν=1/3$, denoted as CDW-$1$. Additionally, we demonstrate that the competition between the displacement field and twist angle leads to another phase transition from a layer-polarized CDW-$1$ to a layer-hybridized CDW-$2$, identified as a first-order phase transition. Furthermore, at $ν=2/3$ filling of the lowest hole band, we observe that the FCI remains stable against the displacement field until it approaches proximity to a transition in single-particle band topology at a smaller twist angle.

We study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice with the first and second nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$, $J_2$, as well as the three-spin scalar chiral coupling $J_χ$. Using density matrix renormalization group calculations, we obtain a quantum phase diagram of this system for $0 \leq J_2/J_1 \leq 1.0$ and $0 \leq J_χ/J_1 \leq 1.5$. We identify the Néel and stripe magnetic order phase at small $J_χ$ coupling. With growing $J_χ$, we identify the emergent chiral spin liquid (CSL) phase characterized by the quantized spin Chern number $C = 1/2$ and entanglement spectrum with the quasidegenerate group of levels agreeing with chiral SU(2)$_1$ conformal field theory, which is an analog of the $ν= 1/2$ Laughlin state in spin system. In the vicinity of the Néel and CSL phase boundary, our numerical results do not find evidence to support the phase coexistence of Néel order and topological order that was conjectured by mean-field calculations. In the larger $J_2$ and $J_χ$ coupling regime, the entanglement spectrum of the ground state also exhibits the chiral quasidegeneracy consistent with a CSL, but the adiabatic flux insertion simulations fail to obtain the quantized Chern number. By analyzing the finite-size scaling of magnetic order parameter, we find the vanished magnetic order suggesting a magnetic disorder phase, whose nature needs further studies. Different from the spin-$1$ $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_χ$ model, we do not find the coexistent stripe magnetic order and topological order. We also investigate the $J_χ$ dominant regime and find a strong tendency of the system to develop a dimer order rather than the chiral spin magnetic order observed in the spin-$1$ model.

Generalized Wigner Crystal (GWC) is a novel quantum phase of matter driven by further-range interaction at fractional fillings of a lattice. The role of further range interaction as the driver for the incompressible state is akin to Wigner crystal. On the other hand, the significant role of commensurate filling is akin to the Mott insulator. Recent progress in simulator platforms presents unprecedented opportunities to investigate quantum melting in the strongly interacting regime through synergy between theory and experiments. However, the earlier theory literature presents diverging predictions. We study the quantum freezing of GWC through large-scale density matrix renormalization group simulations of a triangular lattice extended Hubbard model. We find a single first-order phase transition between the Fermi liquid and the $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ GWC state. The GWC state shows long-range antiferromagnetic $120^\circ$ N{é}el order. Our results present the simplest answers to the question of the quantum phase transition into the GWC phase and the properties of the GWC phase.

The Hubbard and closely related t-J models are exciting platforms for unconventional superconductivity. Through state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group calculations using the grand canonical ensembles, we address open issues regarding the ground-state phase diagram of the extended t-J model on a square lattice in the parameter regime relevant to cuprate superconductors. On large 8-leg cylinders, we demonstrate that the pure t-J model with only nearest-neighbor hop**s and superexchange interactions, for a wide range of hole do** ($δ= 0.1 - 0.2$), hosts an exotic SC state where the d-wave and unidirectional pair density wave SC co-exist with spin and charge bond orders. Furthermore, a small next nearest neighbor hop** $t_2$ suppresses the pair density wave and other co-coexisting orders, leading to a d-wave SC phase in both electron- and hole-doped cuprate model systems. We reveal a simple mechanism for SC in the t-J model, in which the nearest neighbor hop** plays an essential role in driving the formation of Cooper pairs with real-space sign oscillations balancing the competition between the kinetic and exchange energies. Our work validates the t-J model as a proper minimum model for describing fundamental physics of cuprate superconductors

As one of the most intriguing states of matter, the chiral spin liquid (CSL) has attracted much scientific interest while its existence and mechanism in crystalline strongly correlated systems remain hotly debated. On the other hand, strong correlation driven emergent phenomena can be realized in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers with a tremendously tunable large length scale providing a new platform for the emergence of CSLs. We focus on a strongly correlated model relevant to heterobilayer $\textrm{WSe}_{2}/\textrm{MoSe}_{2}$ and investigate the Mott insulating phase at half filling under an out-of-plane magnetic field. Considering both its orbital and spin Zeeman effects we identify three conventionally ordered phases including a $120^{\circ}$ Néel phase, a stripe phase, and an up-up-down phase. For intermediate fields an emergent quantum spin liquid phase is identified with partial spin polarization. We further characterize its topological nature as the $ν$ = 1/2 Laughlin CSL through the topological entanglement spectrum and quantized spin pum** under spin flux insertion. In addition, we map out the quantum phase diagram for different twisted angles in an experimentally accessible parameter regime.

The square-lattice Hubbard and closely related $t$-$J$ models are considered as basic paradigms for understanding strong correlation effects and unconventional superconductivity (SC). Recent large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations on the extended $t$-$J$ model have identified $d$-wave SC on the electron-doped side (with the next-nearest-neighbor hop** $t_2>0$) but a dominant charge density wave (CDW) order on the hole-doped side ($t_2<0$), which is inconsistent with the SC of hole-doped cuprate compounds. We re-examine the ground-state phase diagram of the extended $t$-$J$ model by employing the state-of-the-art DMRG calculations with much enhanced bond dimensions, allowing more accurate determination of the ground state. On 6-leg cylinders, while different CDW phases are identified on the hole-doped side for the do** range $δ= 1/16-1/8$, a SC phase emerges at a lower do** regime, with algebraically decaying pairing correlations and $d$-wave symmetry. On the wider 8-leg systems, the $d$-wave SC also emerges on the hole-doped side at the optimal $1/8$ do**, demonstrating the winning of SC over CDW by increasing the system width. Our results not only suggest a new path to SC in general $t$-$J$ models through weakening the competing charge orders, but also provide a unified understanding on the SC of both hole- and electron-doped cuprate superconductors.

Understanding the doped Mott insulator is a central challenge in condensed matter physics. This study identifies an intrinsic Berry-phase-like sign structure for the square-lattice $t$-$t'$-$J$ model with the nearest-neighbor ($t$) and next-nearest-neighbor hop** ($t'$), which could help explain the origin of the quasi-long-range superconducting and stripe phases observed through density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation. We first demonstrate that the hole binding underlies both the superconducting and stripe orders, and then show that the hole pairing generically disappears once the phase-string or mutual statistics component of the sign structure is switched off in DMRG calculation. In the latter case, the superexchange interaction no longer plays a crucial role in sha** the charge dynamics, where a Fermi-liquid-like phase with small hole Fermi pockets is found. It is in sharp contrast to the large Fermi surfaces in either the stripe phase found at $t'/t<0$ or the superconducting phase at $t'/t>0$ in the original $t$-$t'$-$J$ model on the 6-leg ladder.

Particularly, the homobilayer TMDs under displacement field are believed to be described by a generalized triangular-lattice Hubbard model with a spin-dependent hop** phase $θ$. To explore the effects of $θ$ on the system, we perform density matrix renormalization group calculations for the relevant triangular lattice t-J model. By changing $θ$ at small hole do**, we obtain a region of quasi-long-range superconducting order coexisting with charge and spin density wave within $0<θ<π/3$. The superconductivity is composed of a dominant spin singlet $d$-wave and a subdominant triplet $p$-wave pairing. Intriguingly, the $S_z=\pm 1$ triplet pairing components feature pair density waves. In addition, we find a region of triplet superconductivity coexisting with charge density wave and ferromagnetism within $π/3<θ<2π/3$, which is related to the former phase at smaller $θ$ by a combined operation of spin-flip and gauge transformation. Our findings provide insights and directions for experimental search for exotic superconductivity in twisted TMD systems.

We study local density of state (LDOS) oscillations arising from the scattering of electrons at atomic edge defects in topological insulator (TI) surfaces. To create edge scattering on the surface of a TI, we assume that half of its surface is covered with a semiconductor. In addition to modifying the TI states in the covered half, the presence of the semiconductor leads to a localized edge potential at the vacuum-semiconductor boundary. We study the induced LDOS by imposing time-reversal (TR) invariance and current conservation across the boundary. Additionally, we explore how the scattering of TI junctions with dissimilar spin textures and anisotropic Fermi velocities affect the modulations of the LDOS away from the junction edge. In all cases, for energies close to the Dirac point, we find that the decay envelope of the LDOS oscillations is insensitive to the scattering at the atomic edge defect, with a decay power given by $x^{-3/2}$. Quantitative differences in the amplitude of these oscillations depend on the details of the interface and the spin textures, while the period of the oscillations is defined by the size of the Fermi surface.

Here we report an example of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid emerging in spin-$3/2$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice. By tuning Heisenberg exchange interaction and scalar chirality interaction, we map out a quantum phase diagram enclosing three conventional magnetic orders and a chiral spin liquid based on density matrix renormalization group studies. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a long-sought bosonic version of Read-Rezayi state that supports non-Abelian Fibonacci anyonic statistics, identified by the ground state entanglement spectrum. Significantly, we establish that the non-Abelian CSL emerges through the enlarged local degrees of freedom and enhanced quantum fluctuations near the classical phase boundaries of competing magnetic orders. Our numerical discovery of an exotic quantum spin liquid in spin-$3/2$ system suggests a new route for discovering fractionalized quantum phases in frustrated higher spin magnetic compounds.

The topological superconducting state is a highly sought-after quantum state hosting topological order and Majorana excitations. In this work, we explore the mechanism to realize the topological superconductivity (TSC) in the doped Mott insulators with time-reversal symmetry (TRS). Through large-scale density matrix renormalization group study of an extended triangular-lattice $t$-$J$ model on the six- and eight-leg cylinders, we identify a $d+id$-wave chiral TSC with spontaneous TRS breaking, which is characterized by a Chern number $C=2$ and quasi-long-range superconducting order. We map out the quantum phase diagram by tuning the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) electron hop** and spin interaction. In the weaker NNN-coupling regime, we identify a pseudogaplike phase with a charge stripe order coexisting with fluctuating superconductivity, which can be tuned into $d$-wave superconductivity by increasing the do** level and system width. The TSC emerges in the intermediate-coupling regime, which has a transition to a $d$-wave superconducting phase with larger NNN couplings. The emergence of the TSC is driven by geometrical frustrations and hole dynamics which suppress spin correlation and charge order, leading to a topological quantum phase transition.

Including the relativistic spin-orbit coupling, such systems often exhibit nontrivial band topology, allowing for gapless edge modes between flat bands at several locations in the band structure, and dispersive bands or at the Dirac band crossing. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that a multiorbital system on a kagome lattice is a versatile platform to explore the interplay between nontrivial band topology and electronic interaction. Specifically, here we report that the multiorbital kagome model with the atomic spin-orbit coupling naturally supports topological bands characterized by nonzero Chern numbers $\cal C$, including a flat band with $|{\cal C}| =1$. When such a flat band is $1/3$ filled, the non-local repulsive interactions induce a fractional Chern insulating state. The mechanism of the unconventional topological superconductivity (TSC) remains a long-standing issue. We investigate the quantum phase diagram of the extended $t$-$J$-$J_χ$ model including spin chiral interactions on triangular lattice based on the state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group simulations. We identify distinct classes of superconducting phases characterized by nonzero topological Chern numbers $C=1$ and $2$, and a nematic d-wave superconducting phase with a zero Chern number. The TSC states are shown to emerge from do** either a magnetic insulator or chiral spin liquid, which opens new opportunities for experimental discovery. We study quantum phases and phase transitions in a one-dimensional interacting fermion system with a Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) type anomaly. Specifically, the inversion symmetry enforces any symmetry-preserving gapped ground state of the system to be a Kitaev chain, following a Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type theorem that we prove. Alternatively, via the Jordan-Wigner transformation, this system describes a spin system whose gapped ground states must break either the inversion or the Ising symmetry associated with fermion parity. We obtain a phase diagram using analytical methods and variational matrix product state simulations, and study the critical behaviors of the quantum phase transitions therein using entanglement entropy, energy variance and finite size scaling of order parameters. In particular, we observe continuous phase transitions between different ordered phases that are beyond the Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson paradigm, in analogy to the deconfined quantum critical points in two spatial dimensions. We show this type of 1D deconfined quantum critical point is described by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory, and extract the Luttinger parameter and critical exponents. We also identify a gapless phase between two ordered phases, which cannot be described by a U(1) Luttinger liquid.

We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term $J_χ$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further unveil a stripe magnetic order coexisting with this spin liquid. Our results not only establish a rare example of non-Abelian spin liquids in simple spin systems but also demonstrate the coexistence of fractionalized excitations and magnetic order beyond mean-field descriptions.

Recent experiments on hetero-bilayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) Moiré systems are exciting in that they manifest a relatively simple model system of an extended Hubbard model on a triangular lattice. Inspired by the prospect of the hetero-TMD Moiré system's potential as a solid-state-based quantum simulator, we explore the extended Hubbard model on the triangular lattice using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Specifically, we explore the two-dimensional phase space of the kinetic energy relative to the interaction strength $t/U$ and the further-range interaction strength $V_1/U$. We find competition between Fermi fluid, chiral spin liquid, spin density wave, and charge density wave. In particular, our finding of the optimal further-range interaction for the chiral correlation presents a tantalizing possibility.

Unravelling competing orders emergent in doped Mott insulators and their interplay with unconventional superconductivity is one of the major challenges in condensed matter physics. To explore possible superconductivity state in the doped Mott insulator, we study a square-lattice $t$-$J$ model with both the nearest and next-nearest-neighbor electron hop**s and spin Heisenberg interactions. By using the state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group simulations with imposing charge $U(1)$ and spin $SU(2)$ symmetries on the large-scale six-leg cylinders, we establish a quantum phase diagram including three phases: a stripe charge density wave phase, a superconducting phase without static charge order, and a superconducting phase coexistent with a weak charge stripe order. Crucially, we demonstrate that the superconducting phase has a power-law pairing correlation decaying much slower than the charge density and spin correlations, which is a quasi-1D descendant of the uniform d-wave superconductor in two dimensions. These findings reveal that enhanced charge and spin fluctuations with optimal do** is able to produce robust d-wave superconductivity in doped Mott insulators, providing a foundation for connecting theories of superconductivity to models of strongly correlated systems.

We propose moiré bilayer as a platform where exotic quantum phases can be stabilized and electrically detected. Moiré bilayer consists of two separate moiré superlattice layers coupled through the inter-layer Coulomb repulsion. In the small distance limit, an SU(4) spin can be formed by combining layer pseudospin and the real spin. As a concrete example, we study an SU(4) spin model on triangular lattice in the fundamental representation. By tuning a three-site ring exchange term $K\sim \frac{t^3}{U^2}$, we find SU(4) symmetric crystallized phase and an SU(4)$_1$ chiral spin liquid (CSL) at the balanced filling. We also predict two different exciton supersolid phases with inter-layer coherence at imbalanced filling under displacement field. Especially, the system can simulate an SU(2) Bose-Einstein-condensation (BEC) by injecting inter-layer excitons into the magnetically ordered Mott insulator at the layer polarized limit. Smoking gun evidences of these phases can be obtained by measuring the pseudo-spin transport in the counter-flow channel.

Using the density matrix renormalization group with SU(2)$_{\rm{spin}} \otimes $U(1)$_{\rm{charge}}$ symmetries implemented, we study the triangular-lattice Hubbard model defined on the long cylinder geometry up to circumference $W=6$. A gapped quantum spin liquid, with on-site interaction $9 \lesssim U / t \lesssim 10.75$, is identified between the metallic and the antiferromagnetic Mott insulating phases. In particular, we find that this spin liquid develops a robust long-range spin scalar-chiral correlation as the system length $L$ increases, which unambiguously unveils the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. In addition, the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum supports symmetry fractionalization and spinon edge modes in the obtained ground state. The possible origin of chiral order in this intermediate spin liquid and its relation to the rotonlike excitations have also been discussed.

We show a coupled dimer and bond-order-wave (BOW) state in the weak coupling regime for the localized spins and itinerant electrons, respectively. The quantum phase transitions for the dimer and the BOW orders occur at the same critical coupling parameter $J_{c}$, with the opening of a charge gap. The emergence of the combination of dimer and BOW order agrees with the experimental findings of the simultaneous Peierls and spin-Peierls transitions at low temperatures, which provides a theoretical understanding of such phase transition. We also show that the localized spins in this insulating state have quasi-long ranged spin correlations with collinear configurations, which resemble the classical dimer order in the absence of a magnetic order.

We numerically study the three-dimensional (3D) quantum Hall effect (QHE) and magnetothermoelectric transport of Weyl semimetals in the presence of disorder. We obtain a bulk picture that the exotic 3D QHE emerges in a finite range of Fermi energy near the Weyl points determined by the gap between the $n=-1$ and $n=1$ Landau levels (LLs). The quantized Hall conductivity is attributable to the chiral zeroth LLs traversing the gap, and is robust against disorder scattering for an intermediate number of layers in the direction of the magnetic field. Moreover, we predict several interesting characteristic features of the thermoelectric transport coefficients in the 3D QHE regime, which can be probed experimentally. We investigate the evolution of the Mott insulators in the triangular lattice Hubbard Model, as a function of hole do** $δ$ in both the strong and intermediate coupling limits. Using the advanced density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, at light hole do** $δ\lesssim 10\%$, we find a significant difference between strong and intermediate couplings. Notably, at intermediate coupling an unusual metallic state emerges, with short ranged spin correlations but long ranged spin-chirality order. Moreover, no clear Fermi surface or wave-vector is observed, this chiral metal also exhibits staggered loop current, which breaks the translational symmetry. These features disappear on increasing interaction strength or on further do**. At strong coupling, the 120 degree magnetic order of the insulating magnet persists for light do**, and produces hole pockets with a well defined Fermi surface. On further do**, $δ\approx 10\%\sim 20\%$ SDW order and coherent hole Fermi pockets are found at both strong and intermediate couplings. At even higher do** $δ\gtrsim 20\%$, the SDW order is suppressed and the spin-singlet Cooper pair correlations are simultaneously enhanced. We also briefly comment on the strong particle-hole asymmetry of the model.

We study the quantum phase diagram of spinful fermions on kagome lattice with half-filled lowest flat bands. To understand the competition between magnetism, flat band frustration, and repulsive interactions, we adopt an extended $t$-$J$ model, where the hop** energy $t$, antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction $J$, and short-range neighboring Hubbard interaction $V$ are considered. In the weak $J$ regime, we identify a fully spin-polarized phase, which can further support the spontaneous Chern insulating phase driven by the short-range repulsive interaction. This phase still emerges with in-plane ferromagnetism, whereas the non-interacting Chern insulator disappears constrained by symmetry. As $J$ gradually increases, the ferromagnetism is suppressed and the system first becomes partially-polarized with large magnetization and then enters a non-polarized phase with the ground state exhibiting vanishing magnetization. We identify this non-polarized phase as an insulator with a nematic charge density wave. In the end, we discuss the potential experimental observations of our theoretical findings.

Motivated by experimental observation of the non-magnetic phase in the compounds with frustration and disorder, we study the ground state of the spin-$1/2$ square-lattice Heisenberg model with randomly distributed nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ couplings. By using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation on cylinder system with circumference up to $10$ lattice sites, we identify a disordered phase between the Néel and stripe magnetic phase with growing $J_2 / J_1$ in the presence of strong bond randomness. The vanished spin-freezing parameter indicates the absence of spin glass order. The large-scale DMRG results unveil the size-scaling behaviors of the spin-freezing parameter, the power-law decay of the average spin correlation, and the exponential decay of the typical spin correlation, which all agree with the corresponding behavior in the one-dimensional random singlet (RS) state and characterize the RS nature of this disordered phase. The DMRG simulation also provides insights and opportunities for characterizing a class of non-magnetic states in two-dimensional frustrated magnets with disorder. We also compare with existing experiments and suggest more measurements for understanding the spin-liquid-like behaviors in the double perovskite Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$O$_6$.

Recent thermal Hall experiment pumped new energy into the problem of $ν=5/2$ quantum Hall effect, which motivated novel interpretations based on formation of mesoscopic puddles made of Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian topological orders. Here, we study an interface between the Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states, which may play crucial roles in thermal transport, by means of state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group simulations on the cylinder geometry. We provide compelling evidences that indicate the edge modes of the Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian state strongly hybridize with each other around the interface. Moreover, we demonstrate an intrinsic electric dipole moment emerges at the interface, similar to the "p-n" junction sandwiched between N-type and P-type semiconductor. Importantly, we elucidate the topological origin of this dipole moment, whose formation is to counterbalance the mismatch of guiding-center Hall viscosity of bulk Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian state.

Topological quantum liquids contain internal degrees of freedom that are coupled to geometric response. Yet, an explicit and microscopic identification of geometric response remains difficult. Here, taking notable fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states as typical examples, we systematically investigate a promising protocol -- the Dehn twist deformation on the torus geometry, to probe the geometric response of correlated topological states and establish the relation between such response and the universal properties of pertinent states. Based on analytical derivations and numerical simulations, we find that the geometry-induced Berry phase encodes novel features for a broad class of FQH states at the Laughlin, hierarchy, Halperin and non-Abelian Moore-Read fillings. Our findings conclusively demonstrate that the adiabatic Dehn twist deformation can faithfully capture the geometry of elementary FQH droplets and intrinsic modular information including topological spin and chiral central charge. Our approach provides a powerful way to reveal topological orders of generic FQH states and allows us to address previously open questions.

We investigate the ground state properties of the spin S=1 Kitaev honeycomb model under a magnetic field based on the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation. With the time reversal symmetry breaking due to the magnetic field, a gapped Kitaev spin liquid is identified for both ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev couplings. The topological nature of such Kitaev spin liquid is manifested by the nearly quantized Wilson loop, degeneracy in the entanglement spectra and existence of edge modes. While the FM Kitaev spin liquid is destroyed by a weaker magnetic field $H_*^\text{FM}$, the AFM one demonstrates a robustness up to an order of magnitude larger critical field $H_*^\text{AFM}$. Moreover, an intermediate nonmagnetic phase appears only for the AFM case at larger fields, $H_*^\text{AFM} < H < H_{**}^\text{AFM}$, before the transition to a high-field polarized paramagnet. The stability of the Kitaev spin liquid against the Heisenberg interactions is also examined. Our findings may further inspire the investigation of recently proposed S=1 Kitaev materials.

We obtain a quantum phase diagram with both conventionally ordered and topologically ordered phases. In particular, the long-sought Kalmeyer-Laughlin CSL is shown to emerge under a small $J_χ$ perturbation due to the interplay of the magnetic frustration and chiral interactions. The CSL, which is a non-magnetic phase, is identified by the scalar chiral order, the finite spin gap on a torus, and the chiral entanglement spectrum described by chiral $SU(2)_{1}$ conformal field theory.

By tuning the relative value of the Kitaev and Heisenberg exchange couplings, we obtain the whole phase diagram with two spin liquid phases and four symmetry broken phases. We identify that the spin liquid phases are gapless by calculating the central charge at the pure Kitaev points without Heisenberg interaction. Comparing to its spin-1/2 counterpart, the position and number of gapless modes of the spin-1 case are quite different. Due to the approximate $Z_2$ local conservations, the expectation value of Wilson loop operator measuring the flux of each plaquette stays near to 1, and the static spin-spin correlations remain short-range in the entire spin liquid phases.

The powerlaw scaling remains unchanged for different forms of interaction including Coulomb and short-range ones, demonstrating the robustness of non-Fermi-liquid behavior at low $T$. In contrast, for $1/3$ fractional quantum Hall state, $α_{xy}$ vanishes at low $T$ with an activation gap associated with neutral collective modes rather than charged quasiparticles. Our results establish a new manifestation of the non-Fermi-liquid nature of quantum Hall fluids at finite temperature.

We study the transition numerically within a model that contains all leading single particle corrections to the band-structure of bilayer graphene and includes the fluctuations between the $n=0$ and $n=1$ cyclotron orbitals of its zeroth Landau level to delineate the most favorable region of parameters to experimentally access this unconventional critical point. Here, using density-matrix renormalization group calculation, we unveil a bosonic integer quantum Hall phase in two-dimensional correlated honeycomb lattice, by full identification of its internal structure from the topological $\mathbf{K}$ matrix. Moreover we demonstrate that imbalanced periodic chemical potentials can destroy the bosonic integer quantum Hall state and drive it into a featureless trivial (Mott) insulator, where all physical observables evolve smoothly across the critical point. At the critical point the entanglement entropy reveals a characteristic scaling behavior, which is consistent with the critical field theory as an emergent QED$_3$ with two flavors of Dirac fermions.

We study the interplay of competing interactions in spin-$1/2$ triangular Heisenberg model through tuning the first- ($J_1$), second- ($J_2$), and third-neighbor ($J_3$) couplings. Based on large-scale density matrix renormalization group calculation, we identify a quantum phase diagram of the system and discover a new {\it gapless} chiral spin liquid (CSL) phase in the intermediate $J_2$ and $J_3$ regime. This CSL state spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry with finite scalar chiral order, and it has gapless excitations implied by a vanishing spin triplet gap and a finite central charge on the cylinder. Moreover, the central charge grows rapidly with the cylinder circumference, indicating emergent spinon Fermi surfaces. To understand the numerical results we propose a parton mean-field spin liquid state, the $U(1)$ staggered flux state, which breaks time-reversal symmetry with chiral edge modes by adding a Chern insulator mass to Dirac spinons in the $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid. This state also breaks lattice rotational symmetries and possesses two spinon Fermi surfaces driven by nonzero $J_2$ and $J_3$, which naturally explains the numerical results. To our knowledge, this is the first example of a gapless CSL state with coexisting spinon Fermi surfaces and chiral edge states, demonstrating the rich family of novel phases emergent from competing interactions in triangular-lattice magnets.

We study the many-body ground states of SU($N$) symmetric hardcore bosons on the topological flat-band model by using controlled numerical calculations. By introducing strong intracomponent and intercomponent interactions, we demonstrate that a hierarchy of bosonic SU($N$) fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states emerges at fractional filling factors $ν=N/(MN+1)$ (odd $M=3$). In order to characterize this series of FQH states, we figure the effective $\mathbf{K}$ matrix from the inverse of the Chern number matrix. The topological characterization of the $\mathbf{K}$ matrix also reveals quantized drag Hall responses and fractional charge pum** that could be detected in future experiments. In addition, we address the general one-to-one correspondence to the spinless FQH states in topological flat bands with Chern number $C=N$ at fillings $\widetildeν=1/(MC+1)$.

We report the existence of the charge density wave (CDW) in the ground state of 1D Kondo lattice model at the filling of n=0.75 in the weak coupling region. The CDW is driven by the effective Coulomb repulsion mediated by the localized spins. Based on our numerical results using the density matrix renormalization group method, we show that the CDW phase appears in the paramagnetic region previously known as the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. The emergence of this phase serves as an example of CDW phase induced without bare repulsive interactions, and enriches the phase diagram of the 1D Kondo lattice model.

We study the antiferromagnetic kagome Heisenberg model with additional scalar-chiral interaction by using the infinite projected entangled-pair state (iPEPS) ansatz. We discuss in detail the implementation of optimization algorithm in the framework of the single-layer tensor network based on the corner-transfer matrix technique. Our benchmark based on the full-update algorithm shows that the single-layer algorithm is stable, which leads to the same level of accuracy as the double-layer ansatz but with much less computation time. We further apply this algorithm to study the nature of the kagome Heisenberg model with a scalar-chiral interaction by computing the bond dimension scaling of magnetization, bond energy difference, chiral order parameter and correlation length. In particular, we find that for strong chiral coupling the correlation length, which is extracted from the transfer matrix, saturates to a finite value for large bond dimension, representing a gapped spin-liquid state. Further comparison with density matrix renormalization group results supports that our iPEPS faithfully represents the time-reversal symmetry breaking chiral state. Our iPEPS simulation results shed new light on constructing PEPS for describing gapped chiral topological states.

Inspired by recent discovery of correlated insulating states in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), we study a two-orbital Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice with two electrons per unit cell. Based on the real-space density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulation, we identify a metal-insulator transition around $U_c/t=2.5\sim3$. In the vicinity of $U_c$, we find strong spin/orbital density wave fluctuations at commensurate wavevectors, accompanied by weaker incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) fluctuations. The spin/orbital density wave fluctuations are enhanced with increasing system sizes, suggesting the possible emergence of long-range order in the two dimensional limit. At larger $U$, our calculations indicate a possible nonmagnetic Mott insulator phase without spin or orbital polarization. Our findings offer new insights into correlated electron phenomena in twisted bilayer graphene and other multi-orbital honeycomb materials.

We study a ground-state ansatz for the single-hole doped $t$-$J$ model in two dimensions via a variational Monte Carlo (VMC) method. Such a single-hole wave function possesses finite angular momenta generated by hidden spin currents, which give rise to a novel ground state degeneracy in agreement with recent exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMGR) results. We further show that the wave function can be decomposed into a quasiparticle component and an incoherent momentum distribution in excellent agreement with the DMRG results up to an $8\times 8 $ lattice. Such a two-component structure indicates the breakdown of Landau's one-to-one correspondence principle, and in particular, the quasiparticle spectral weight vanishes by a power law in the large sample-size limit. By contrast, turning off the phase string induced by the hole hop** in the so-called $σ\cdot t\text{-}J$ model, a conventional Bloch-wave wave function with a finite quasiparticle spectral weight can be recovered, also in agreement with the ED and DMRG results. The present study shows that a singular effect already takes place in the single-hole-doped Mott insulator, by which the bare hole is turned into a non-Landau quasiparticle with translational symmetry breaking. Generalizations to pairing and finite do** are briefly discussed.

The fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect at the filling number $ν=5/2$ is a primary candidate for non-Abelian topological order, while the fate of such a state in the presence of random disorder has not been resolved. Here, we address this open question by implementing unbiased diagnosis based on numerical exact diagonalization. We calculate the disorder averaged Hall conductance and the associated statistical distribution of the topological invariant Chern number, which unambiguously characterize the disorder-driven collapse of the FQH state. As the disorder strength increases towards a critical value, a continuous phase transition is detected based on the disorder configuration averaged wave function fidelity and the entanglement entropy. In the strong disorder regime, we identify a composite Fermi liquid (CFL) phase with fluctuating Chern numbers, in striking contrast to the well-known $ν=1/3$ case where an Anderson insulator appears. Interestingly, the lowest Landau level projected local density profile, the wavefunction overlap, and the entanglement entropy as a function of disorder strength simultaneously signal an intermediate phase, which may be relevant to the recent proposal of Pfaffian-anti-Pfaffian puddle state.

We study the coupled quantum Hall bilayers each at half-filled first excited Landau levels with varying the layer distance. Based on numerical exact diagonalization on torus, we identify two distinct phases separated by a critical layer distance $d_c$. From $d_c$ to infinite layer distance, the topological phase is smoothly connected to a direct tensor product of two Moore-Read states, while the interlayer coherence emerges at $d<d_c$ characterized by the $xy$ easy-plane ferromagnetic energy spectra, gapless pseudospin excitations and the finite exciton superfluid stiffness, corresponding to the exciton superfluid state. More interestingly, the results of the ground state fidelity, the evolution of energy spectra, and the superfluid stiffness indicate a possible continuous transition. Theoretically it can be interpreted as a topological phase transition which simultaneously changes the topology of ground state and breaks symmetry, providing an interesting example of transitions beyond Landau paradigm.

We study the quantum phases of spinless fermion at one-third filling on a Kagome lattice featuring a quadratic band touching Fermi point. In the presence of weak first and second nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions ($V_1$ and $V_2$), we demonstrate an interaction driven quantum anomalous Hall effect by employing exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group methods. The time-reversal symmetry is broken spontaneously by forming loop currents that exhibit long-range correlation. Quantized Hall conductance corresponding to Chern number of $\pm1$ is obtained by measuring the pumped charge through inserting flux in a cylinder geometry. We find that the energy gap, which topologically protects the emerging ground states, can be enhanced remarkably by a moderate $V_2 < V_1$ via calculating the spectrum and charge excitation gaps, which highlights the experimentally feasible scheme of realizing interaction driven topological phase by spatially decaying interactions on topologically trivial lattice models.

Interaction driven topological phases can significantly enrich the class of topological materials and thus are of great importance. Here, we study the phase diagram of interacting spinless fermions filling the two-dimensional checkerboard lattice with a quadratic band touching (QBT) point. By develo** new diagnosis based on the state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization, we determine accurate quantum phase diagram for such a system at half-filling with three distinct phases. For weak nearest-neighboring interactions, we demonstrate the instablity of the QBT towards an interaction-driven spontaneous quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect. For strong interactions, the system breaks the rotational symmetry realizing a nematic charge-density-wave (CDW) phase. Interestingly, for intermediate interactions we discover a symmetry-broken bond-ordered critical phase sandwiched in between the QAH and CDW phases, which splits the QBT into two Dirac points driven by interaction. Instead of the direct transition between QAH and CDW phases, our identification of an intermediate phase shed new light on the theoretical understanding of the interaction-driven phases in QBT systems.

We study dynamical spin structure factor (DSSF) of S = 1/2 Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice (KAFM) by means of density-matrix renormalization group. By comparison with the well-defined magnetic ordered state and chiral spin liquid sitting nearby in the phase diagram, the KAFM with the nearest-neighbor interaction shows distinct dynamical response behaviors. First of all, the DSSF displays important spectral intensity predominantly at low frequency region around Q = M point in momentum space, and shows a broad spectral distribution at high frequency region for momenta along the boundary of the extended Brillouin zone. Secondly, spinon excitation spectrum is identified from momentum and energy resolved DSSF, which shows critical behavior with much reduced spectrum intensity comparing to the neighboring chiral spin liquid. By adding a weak Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction, the DSSF demonstrates a strong sensitivity to the boundary condition smore consistent with a gapless spin liquid. These results capture the main observations in the inelastic neutron scattering measurements of herbertsmithite, and indicate the spin liquid nature of the ground state with fractionalized spinon excitations. By following the DSSF crossing the quantum phase transition between the CSL and the magnetical ordered phase, we identify the spinon condensation driving the quantum phase transition.

We investigate the nature of doped Mott insulators using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. Persistent spin currents are revealed in the ground state, which are concomitant with a nonzero total momentum or angular momentum associated with the doped hole. The latter determines a nontrivial ground state degeneracy. By further making superpositions of the degenerate ground states with zero or unidirectional spin currents, we show that different patterns of spatial charge and spin modulations will emerge. Such anomaly persists for the odd numbers of holes, but the spin current, ground state degeneracy, and charge/spin modulations completely disappear for even numbers of holes, with the two-hole ground state exhibiting a d-wave symmetry. An understanding of the spin current due to a many-body Berry-like phase and its impact on the momentum distribution of the doped holes will be discussed.
