In this paper, we discuss how gauging one-form symmetries in Chern-Simons theories is implemented in an A-twisted topological open string theory. For example, the contribution from a fixed H/Z bundle on a three-manifold M, arising in a BZ gauging of H Chern-Simons, for Z a finite subgroup of the center of H, is described by an open string worldsheet theory whose bulk is a sigma model with target a Z-gerbe (a bundle of one-form symmetries) over T^* M, of characteristic class determined by the H/Z bundle. We give a worldsheet picture of the decomposition of one-form-symmetry-gauged Chern-Simons in three dimensinos, and we describe how a target-space constraint on bundles arising in the gauged Chern-Simons theory has a natural worldsheet realization. Our proposal provides examples of the expected correspondence between worldsheet global higher-form symmetries, and target-space gauged higher-form symmetries.

We also specialize to the case that the fusion category is multiplicity-free. We discuss how to construct a modular-invariant partition function from a choice of Frobenius algebra structure on H^*. We discuss how ordinary G orbifolds for finite groups G are a special case of the construction, corresponding to the fusion category Vec(G) = Rep( C[G]^* ). For the cases Rep(S_3), Rep(D_4), and Rep(Q_8), we construct the crossing kernels for general intertwiner maps. We explicitly compute partition functions in the examples of Rep(S_3), Rep(D_4), Rep(Q_8), and Rep(H_8), and discuss applications in c=1 CFTs. We also discuss decomposition in the special case that the entire noninvertible symmetry group acts trivially.

We generalize Coulomb-branch-based gauged linear sigma model (GLSM)-based computations of quantum cohomology rings of Fano spaces. Typically such computations have focused on GLSMs without superpotential, for which the IR phase of the GLSM is a pure Coulomb branch, and quantum cohomology is determined by the critical locus of a twisted one-loop effective superpotential. Here, we systematically extend to cases for which the IR phase is a mixture of Coulomb and Higgs branches, where the latter is a Landau-Ginzburg orbifold. We describe the state spaces and products of corresponding operators in detail, comparing a geometric phase description, where the OPE ring is quantum cohomology, to the IR description in terms of Coulomb and Higgs branch states. As a concrete test of our methods, we compare to existing mathematics results for quantum cohomology rings of hypersurfaces in projective spaces in numerous examples.

It was recently argued by Nguyen-Tanizaki-Unsal that two-dimensional pure Yang-Mills theory is equivalent to (decomposes into) a disjoint union of (invertible) quantum field theories, known as universes. In this paper we compare this decomposition to the Gross-Taylor expansion of two-dimensional pure SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in the large N limit as the string field theory of a sigma model. Specifically, we study the Gross-Taylor expansion of individual Nguyen-Tanizaki-Unsal universes. These differ from the Gross-Taylor expansion of the full Yang-Mills theory in two ways: a restriction to single instanton degrees, and some additional contributions not present in the expansion of the full Yang-Mills theory. We propose to interpret the restriction to single instanton degree as implying a constraint, namely that the Gross-Taylor string has a global (higher-form) symmetry with Noether current related to the worldsheet instanton number. We compare two-dimensional pure Maxwell theory as a prototype obeying such a constraint, and also discuss in that case an analogue of the Witten effect arising under two-dimensional theta angle rotation. We also propose a geometric interpretation of the additional terms, in the special case of Yang-Mills theories on two-spheres. In addition, also for the case of theories on two-spheres, we propose a reinterpretation of the terms in the Gross-Taylor expansion of the Nguyen-Tanizaki-Unsal universes, replacing sigma models on branched covers by counting disjoint unions of stacky copies of the target Riemann surface, that makes the Nguyen-Tanizaki-Unsal decomposition into invertible field theories more nearly manifest. As the Gross-Taylor string is a sigma model coupled to worldsheet gravity, we also briefly outline the tangentially-related topic of decomposition in two-dimensional theories coupled to gravity.

In this paper we propose a definition of torsion refined Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) invariants for Calabi-Yau threefolds with terminal nodal singularities that do not admit Kähler crepant resolutions. Physically, the refinement takes into account the charge of five-dimensional BPS states under a discrete gauge symmetry in M-theory. We propose a mathematical definition of the invariants in terms of the geometry of all non-Kähler crepant resolutions taken together. The invariants are encoded in the A-model topological string partition functions associated to non-commutative (nc) resolutions of the Calabi-Yau. Our main example will be a singular degeneration of the generic Calabi-Yau double cover of $\mathbb{P}^3$ and leads to an enumerative interpretation of the topological string partition function of a hybrid Landau-Ginzburg model. Our results generalize a recent physical proposal made in the context of torus fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds by one of the authors and clarify the associated enumerative geometry.

Trivially-acting symmetries in two-dimensional conformal field theory include twist fields of dimension zero which are local topological operators. We investigate the consequences of regarding these operators as part of the global symmetry of the theory. That is, we regard such a symmetry as a mix of topological defect lines (TDLs) and topological point operators (TPOs). TDLs related by a trivially-acting symmetry can join at a TPO to form non-trivial two-way junctions. Upon gauging, the local operators at those junctions can become vacua in a disjoint union of theories. Examining the behavior of the TPOs under gauging therefore allows us to refine decomposition by tracking the trivially-acting symmetries of each universe. Mixed anomalies between the TDLs and TPOs provide discrete torsion-like phases for the partition functions of these orbifolds, modifying the resulting decomposition. This framework also readily allows for the consideration of trivially-acting non-invertible symmetries.

We prove a `Whitney' presentation, and a `Coulomb branch' presentation, for the torus equivariant quantum K theory of the Grassmann manifold $\mathrm{Gr}(k;n)$, inspired from physics, and stated in an earlier paper. The first presentation is obtained by quantum deforming the product of the Hirzebruch $λ_y$ classes of the tautological bundles. In physics, the $λ_y$ classes arise as certain Wilson line operators. The second presentation is obtained from the Coulomb branch equations involving the partial derivatives of a twisted superpotential from supersymmetric gauge theory. This is closest to a presentation obtained by Gorbounov and Korff, utilizing integrable systems techniques. Algebraically, we relate the Coulomb and Whitney presentations utilizing transition matrices from the (equivariant) Grothendieck polynomials to the (equivariant) complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials. The calculations of K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of wedge powers of the tautological subbundles on the Grassmannian utilize the `quantum=classical' statement.

We review work on `decomposition,' a property of two-dimensional theories with 1-form symmetries and, more generally, d-dimensional theories with (d-1)-form symmetries. Decomposition is the observation that such quantum field theories are equivalent to (`decompose into') disjoint unions of other QFTs, known in this context as "universes." Examples include two-dimensional gauge theories and orbifolds with matter invariant under a subgroup of the gauge group. Decomposition explains and relates several physical properties of these theories -- for example, restrictions on allowed instantons arise as a "multiverse interference effect" between contributions from constituent universes. First worked out in 2006 as part of efforts to resolve technical questions in string propagation on stacks, decomposition has been the driver of a number of developments since. We give a general overview of decomposition, describe features of decomposition arising in gauge theories, then dive into specifics for orbifolds. We conclude with a discussion of the recent application to anomaly resolution of Wang-Wen-Witten in two-dimensional orbifolds. This is a contribution to the proceedings of the conference Two-dimensional supersymmetric theories and related topics (Matrix Institute, Australia, January 2022), giving an overview of a talk given there and elsewhere.

A number of finite algorithms for constructing representation theoretic data from group multiplications in a finite group G have recently been shown to be related to amplitudes for combinatoric topological strings (G-CTST) based on Dijkgraaf-Witten theory of flat G-bundles on surfaces. We extend this result to projective representations of G using twisted Dijkgraaf-Witten theory. New algorithms for characters are described, based on handle creation operators and minimal multiplicative generating subspaces for the centers of group algebras and twisted group algebras. Such minimal generating subspaces are of interest in connection with information theoretic aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence. For the untwisted case, we describe the integrality properties of certain character sums and character power sums which follow from these constructive G-CTST algorithms. These integer sums appear as residues of singularities in G-CTST generating functions. S-duality of the combinatoric topological strings motivates the definition of an inverse handle creation operator in the centers of group algebras and twisted group algebras.

In this paper we discuss the relationship between noninvertible topological operators, one-form symmetries, and decomposition of two-dimensional quantum field theories, focusing on two-dimensional orbifolds with and without discrete torsion. As one component of our analysis, we study the ring of dimension-zero operators in two-dimensional theories exhibiting decomposition. From a commutative algebra perspective, the rings are naturally associated to a finite number of points, one point for each universe in the decomposition. Each universe is canonically associated to a representation, which defines a projector, an idempotent in the ring of dimension-zero operators. We discuss how bulk Wilson lines act as defects bridging universes, and how Wilson lines on boundaries of two-dimensional theories decompose, and compute actions of projectors. We discuss one-form symmetries of the rings, and related properties. We also give general formulas for projection operators, which previously were computed on a case-by-case basis. Finally, we propose a characterization of noninvertible higher-form symmetries in this context in terms of representations. In that characterization, non-isomorphic universes appearing in decomposition are associated with noninvertible one-form symmetries.

Briefly, it has been argued by e.g. Wang-Wen-Witten, Tachikawa that an anomalous orbifold can sometimes be resolved by enlarging the orbifold group so that the pullback of the anomaly to the larger group is trivial. For this procedure to resolve the anomaly, one must specify a set of phases in the larger orbifold, whose form is implicit in the extension construction. There are multiple choices of consistent phases, which give rise to physically distinct resolutions. We apply decomposition, and find that theories with enlarged orbifold groups are equivalent to (disjoint unions of copies of) orbifolds by nonanomalous subgroups of the original orbifold group. In effect, decomposition implies that enlarging the orbifold group is equivalent to making it smaller. We provide a general conjecture for such descriptions, which we check in a number of examples.

We review how this irregularity is classified by cohomology and how extending the orbifold group can remove it. Working with such extensions requires an understanding of the consistent ways in which extending groups can act on the twisted states of the original symmetry, which leads us to a discrete-torsion like choice that exists in orbifolds with trivially-acting subgroups. We review a general method for constructing such extensions and investigate its application to orbifolds. This paper describes a generalization of decomposition in orbifolds. In general terms, decomposition states that two-dimensional orbifolds and gauge theories whose gauge groups have trivially-acting subgroups decompose into disjoint unions of theories. However, decomposition can be, at least naively, broken in orbifolds if the orbifold has discrete torsion in the trivially-acting subgroup. (Formally, this breaks finite global one-form symmetries.) Nevertheless, even in such cases, one still sees rudiments of decomposition. In this paper, we generalize decomposition in orbifolds to include such examples of discrete torsion, which we check in numerous examples. Our analysis includes as special cases (and in one sense generalizes) quantum symmetries of abelian orbifolds.

In this paper we describe a systematic method to compute elliptic genera of (2,2) supersymmetric gauge theories in two dimensions with gauge group G/Gamma (for G semisimple and simply-connected, Gamma a subgroup of the center of G) with various discrete theta angles. We apply the technique to examples of pure gauge theories with low-rank gauge groups. Our results are consistent with expectations from decomposition of two-dimensional theories with finite global one-form symmetries and with computations of supersymmetry breaking for some discrete theta angles in pure gauge theories. Finally, we make predictions for the elliptic genera of all the other remaining pure gauge theories by applying decomposition and matching to known supersymmetry breaking patterns.

In this note we study IR limits of pure two-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories with semisimple non-simply-connected gauge groups including SU(k)/Z_k, SO(2k)/Z_2, Sp(2k)/Z_2, E_6/Z_3, and E_7/Z_2 for various discrete theta angles, both directly in the gauge theory and also in nonabelian mirrors, extending a classification begun in previous work. We find in each case that there are supersymmetric vacua for precisely one value of the discrete theta angle, and no supersymmetric vacua for other values, hence supersymmetry is broken in the IR for most discrete theta angles. Furthermore, for the one distinguished value of the discrete theta angle for which supersymmetry is unbroken, the theory has as many twisted chiral multiplet degrees of freedom in the IR as the rank. We take this opportunity to further develop the technology of nonabelian mirrors to discuss how the mirror to a G gauge theory differs from the mirror to a G/K gauge theory for K a subgroup of the center of G. In particular, the discrete theta angles in these cases are considerably more intricate than those of the pure gauge theories studied in previous papers, so we discuss the realization of these more complex discrete theta angles in the mirror construction. We find that discrete theta angles, both in the original gauge theory and their mirrors, are intimately related to the descriptions of centers of universal covering groups as quotients of weight lattices by root sublattices. We perform numerous consistency checks, comparing results against basic group-theoretic relations as well as with decomposition, which describes how two-dimensional theories with one-form symmetries (such as pure gauge theories with nontrivial centers) decompose into disjoint unions, in this case of pure gauge theories with quotiented gauge groups and discrete theta angles.

The existence of a global one-form symmetry in two dimensions typically signals a violation of cluster decomposition -- an issue resolved by the observation that such theories decompose into disjoint unions, a result that has been applied to, for example, Gromov-Witten theory and gauged linear sigma model phases. In this paper we describe how gauging one-form symmetries in two-dimensional theories can be used to select particular elements of that disjoint union, effectively undoing decomposition. We examine such gaugings explicitly in examples involving orbifolds, nonsupersymmetric pure Yang-Mills theories, and supersymmetric gauge theories in two dimensions. Along the way, we learn explicit concrete details of the topological configurations that path integrals sum over when gauging a one-form symmetry, and we also uncover `hidden' one-form symmetries.

In this paper we extend the nonabelian mirror proposal of two of the authors from two-dimensional gauge theories with connected gauge groups to the case of O(k) gauge groups with discrete theta angles. We check our proposed extension by counting and comparing vacua in mirrors to known dual two-dimensional (S)O(k) gauge theories. The mirrors in question are Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds, and for mirrors to O(k) gauge theories, the critical loci of the mirror superpotential often intersect fixed-point loci, so that to count vacua, one must take into account twisted sector contributions. This is a technical novelty relative to mirrors of gauge theories with connected gauge groups, for which critical loci do not intersect fixed-point loci and so no orbifold twisted sector contributions are pertinent. The vacuum computations turn out to be a rather intricate test of the proposed mirrors, in particular as untwisted sector states in the mirror to one theory are often exchanged with twisted sector states in the mirror to the dual. In cases with nontrivial IR limits, we also check that central charges computed from the Landau-Ginzburg mirrors match those expected for the IR SCFTs.

Many of the geometries can be realized mathematically in terms of joins. We discuss how joins can be described in terms of GLSMs and how the associated Calabi-Yaus arise as phases in the GLSMs. Due to strong-coupling phenomena in the GLSM, the geometries are realized via a mix of perturbative and non-perturbative effects. We apply two-dimensional gauge dualities to construct dual GLSMs. Geometries that are realized perturbatively in one GLSM, are realized non-perturbatively in the dual, and vice versa.

We begin by reviewing the physical realization of sigma models on stacks, as (universality classes of) gauged sigma models, and look in particular at properties of sigma models on gerbes (equivalently, sigma models with restrictions on nonperturbative sectors), and decomposition, in which two-dimensional sigma models on gerbes decompose into disjoint unions of ordinary theories. We also discuss stack structures on examples of moduli spaces of SCFTs, focusing on elliptic curves, and implications of subtleties there for string dualities in other dimensions. In the second part of this article, we review the physical realization of derived categories in terms of renormalization group flow (time evolution) of combinations of D-branes, antibranes, and tachyons. The pure spinor formulation of superstring theory includes an interacting sector of central charge $c_λ=22$, which can be realized as a curved $βγ$ system on the cone over the orthogonal Grassmannian $\text{OG}^{+}(5,10)$. We find that the spectrum of the $βγ$ system organizes into representations of the $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{e}_6$ affine algebra at level $-3$, whose $\mathfrak{so}(10)_{-3}\oplus {\mathfrak u}(1)_{-4}$ subalgebra encodes the rotational and ghost symmetries of the system. As a consequence, the pure spinor partition function decomposes as a sum of affine $\mathfrak{e}_6$ characters. We interpret this as an instance of a more general pattern of enhancements in curved $βγ$ systems, which also includes the cases $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{so}(8)$ and $\mathfrak{e}_7$, corresponding to target spaces that are cones over the complex Grassmannian $\text{Gr}(2,4)$ and the complex Cayley plane $\mathbb{OP}^2$. We identify these curved $βγ$ systems with the chiral algebras of certain $2d$ $(0,2)$ CFTs arising from twisted compactification of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs on $S^2$.

In this paper we propose a systematic construction of mirrors of nonabelian two dimensional (2,2) supersymmetric gauge theories. Specifically, we propose a construction of B-twisted Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds whose correlation functions match those of A-twisted supersymmetric gauge theories, and whose critical loci reproduce quantum cohomology and Coulomb branch relations in A-twisted gauge theories, generalizing the Hori-Vafa mirror construction. We check this proposal in a wide variety of examples. For instance, we construct mirrors corresponding to Grassmannians and two-step flag manifolds, as well as complete intersections therein, and explicitly check predictions for correlation functions and quantum cohomology rings, as well as other properties. We also consider mirrors to examples of gauge theories with U(k), U(k1) x U(k2), SU(k), SO(2k), SO(2k+1), and Sp(2k) gauge groups and a variety of matter representations, and compare to results in the literature for the original two dimensional gauge theories. Finally, we perform consistency checks of conjectures of Aharony et al that a two dimensional (2,2) supersymmetric pure SU(k) gauge theory flows to a theory of k-1 free twisted chiral multiplets, and also consider the analogous question in pure SO(3) theories. For one discrete theta angle, the SO(3) theory behaves the same as the SU(2) theory; for the other, supersymmetry is broken. We also perform consistency checks of analogous statements in pure supersymmetric SO and Sp gauge theories in two dimensions.

Each genus g Riemann surface is constructed using recent GLSM tricks, as a double cover of P^1 branched over a degree 2g + 2 locus, realized via nonperturbative effects rather than as the critical locus of a superpotential. We focus in particular on special cases corresponding to a set of Kahler twistor spaces of certain hyperKahler four-manifolds, specifically the twistor spaces of R^4, C^2/Z_k, and S^1 x R^3. We study 2d $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories that describe the low-energy dynamics of D1-branes at Calabi-Yau fourfold (CY$_4$) singularities. On general grounds, the holomorphic sector of these theories---matter content and (classical) superpotential interactions---should be fully captured by the topological $B$-model on the CY$_4$. By studying a number of examples, we confirm this expectation and flesh out the dictionary between B-brane category and supersymmetric quiver: the matter content of the supersymmetric quiver is encoded in morphisms between B-branes (that is, Ext groups of coherent sheaves), while the superpotential interactions are encoded in the $A_\infty$ algebra satisfied by the morphisms. This provides us with a derivation of the supersymmetric quiver directly from the CY$_4$ geometry. We also suggest a relation between triality of $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ gauge theories and certain mutations of exceptional collections of sheaves. 0d $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric quivers, corresponding to D-instantons probing CY$_5$ singularities, can be discussed similarly.

We also discuss GLSMs for intersections of Grassmannians and Pfaffians with one another, and with their images under various maps, which sometimes form exotic constructions of Calabi-Yaus, as well as GLSMs for other exotic Calabi-Yau constructions of Kanazawa. Much of this paper focuses on a specific set of examples of GLSMs for intersections of Grassmannians G(2,N) with themselves after a linear rotation, including the Calabi-Yau case N=5. One phase of the GLSM realizes an intersection of two Grassmannians, the other phase realizes an intersection of two Pfaffians. The GLSM has two nonabelian factors in its gauge group, and we consider dualities in those factors. In both the original GLSM and a double-dual, one geometric phase is realized perturbatively (as the critical locus of a superpotential), and the other via quantum effects. Dualizing on a single gauge group factor yields a model in which each geometry is realized through a simultaneous combination of perturbative and quantum effects.

In this short paper we look at the action of T-duality and string duality groups on fermions, in maximally-supersymmetric theories and related theories. Briefly, we argue that typical duality groups such as SL(2,Z) have sign ambiguities in their actions on fermions, and propose that pertinent duality groups be extended by Z_2, to groups such as the metaplectic group. Specifically, we look at duality groups arising from map** class groups of tori in M theory compactifications, T-duality, ten-dimensional type IIB S-duality, and (briefly) four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills, and in each case, propose that the full duality group is a nontrivial Z_2 extension of the duality group acting on bosonic degrees of freedom, to more accurately describe possible actions on fermions. We also walk through U-duality groups for toroidal compactifications to nine, eight, and seven dimensions, which enables us to perform cross-consistency tests of these proposals.

As a fractional line bundle, it is nontrivial (though torsion) over the uncompactified moduli stack, and its restriction to the interior, excising corners with enhanced stabilizers, is also fractional. It becomes an honest line bundle on a moduli stack defined by a quotient of the upper half plane by a metaplectic group, rather than SL(2,Z). We review and compare to results of recent work arguing that well-definedness of the worldsheet metric implies that the Bagger-Witten line bundle admits a flat connection (which includes torsion bundles as special cases), and give general arguments on the existence of universal structures on moduli spaces of SCFTs, in which superconformal deformation parameters are promoted to nondynamical fields ranging over the SCFT moduli space.

We compute the ring structure of sheaf cohomology valued in exterior powers of $\mathcal{E}$, also known as the polymology. This is the first part of a project studying the quantum sheaf cohomology of Grassmannians with deformations of the tangent bundle, a generalization of ordinary quantum cohomology rings of Grassmannians. A companion physics paper [arXiv:1512.08586] describes physical aspects of the theory, including a conjecture for the quantum sheaf cohomology ring, and numerous examples.

One of the open problems in understanding (0,2) mirror symmetry concerns the construction of Toda-like Landau-Ginzburg mirrors to (0,2) theories on Fano spaces. In this paper, we begin to fill this gap by making an ansatz for (0,2) Toda-like theories mirror to (0,2) supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on products of projective spaces, with deformations of the tangent bundle, generalizing a special case previously worked out for P1xP1. We check this ansatz by matching correlation functions of the B/2-twisted Toda-like theories to correlation functions of corresponding A/2-twisted nonlinear sigma models, computed primarily using localization techniques. These (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg models admit redundancies, which can lend themselves to multiple distinct-looking representatives of the same physics, which we discuss.

In this paper we study the quantum sheaf cohomology of Grassmannians with deformations of the tangent bundle. Quantum sheaf cohomology is a (0,2) deformation of the ordinary quantum cohomology ring, realized as the OPE ring in A/2-twisted theories. Quantum sheaf cohomology has previously been computed for abelian gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs); here, we study (0,2) deformations of nonabelian GLSMs, for which previous methods have been intractable. Combined with the classical result, the quantum ring structure is derived from the one-loop effective potential. We also utilize recent advances in supersymmetric localization to compute A/2 correlation functions and check the general result in examples. In this paper we focus on physics derivations and examples; in a companion paper, we will provide a mathematically rigorous derivation of the classical sheaf cohomology ring.

We study two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}{=}(0,2)$ supersymmetric gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) using supersymmetric localization. We study two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}{=}(0,2)$ supersymmetric gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) using supersymmetric localization. We consider $\mathcal{N}{=}(0,2)$ theories with an $R$-symmetry, which can always be defined on curved space by a pseudo-topological twist while preserving one of the two supercharges of flat space. For GLSMs which are deformations of $\mathcal{N}{=}(2,2)$ GLSMs and retain a Coulomb branch, we consider the $A/2$-twist and compute the genus-zero correlation functions of certain pseudo-chiral operators, which generalize the simplest twisted chiral ring operators away from the $\mathcal{N}{=}(2,2)$ locus. These correlation functions can be written in terms of a certain residue operation on the Coulomb branch, generalizing the Jeffrey-Kirwan residue prescription relevant for the $\mathcal{N}{=}(2,2)$ locus. For abelian GLSMs, we reproduce existing results with new formulas that render the quantum sheaf cohomology relations and other properties manifest. For non-abelian GLSMs, our methods lead to new results. As an example, we briefly discuss the quantum sheaf cohomology of the Grassmannian manifold.

It was recently argued that quantum field theories possess one-form and higher-form symmetries, labelled `generalized global symmetries.' In this paper, we describe how those higher-form symmetries can be understood mathematically as special cases of more general 2-groups and higher groups, and discuss examples of quantum field theories admitting actions of more general higher groups than merely one-form and higher-form symmetries. We discuss analogues of topological defects for some of these higher symmetry groups, relating some of them to ordinary topological defects. We also discuss topological defects in cases in which the moduli `space' (technically, a stack) admits an action of a higher symmetry group. Finally, we outline a proposal for how certain anomalies might potentially be understood as describing a transmutation of an ordinary group symmetry of the classical theory into a 2-group or higher group symmetry of the quantum theory, which we link to WZW models and bosonization.
