Optical bistability in a $Λ$-type atomic system including near dipole-dipole interaction
Abstract: The advantage of optical bistability (OB) using three-level electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) atomic system over the two-level system is its controllability, as absorption, dispersion, and optical nonlinearity in one of the atomic transitions can be modified considerably by the field interacting with nearby atomic transitions. This is due to induced atomic coherences generated in such… ▽ More

Absorption-dispersion in a three-level electromagnetically induced transparency medium including near dipole-dipole interaction effects
Abstract: Dynamical evolution and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is investigated here in a three-level $λ$-type atomic system including near-dipole-dipole interaction among atoms. The system is driven by the probe and coupling fields. Exact numerical solutions under steady-state condition are given for the density operator equation to get information about population in various levels and th… ▽ More

Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics with Quantum Interference in a Three-level Atomic System
Abstract: Spontaneously generated coherence and enhanced dispersion in a V-type, three-level atomic system interacting with a single mode field can considerably reduce the radiative and cavity decay rates. This may eliminate the use of high finesse, miniaturized cavities in optical cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments under strong atom-field coupling conditions.

Modeling a nanocantilever based biosensor using a stochastically perturbed harmonic oscillator
Abstract: Nanoscale biosensors are devices designed to detect analytes by combining biological components and physicochemical detectors. One of the well known methods of constructing these sensors is by using nanocantilevers. These microscopic 'diving boards' are coated with binding probes that have an affinity to a particular amino acid, enzyme or protein in living organisms. When these probes attract some… ▽ More

Refractive index of a transparent liquid measured with a concave mirror
Abstract: This paper describes the spherical concave mirror method for measuring the index of refraction of transparent liquids. We derived the refractive index equation using Snell's law and the small-angle approximation. We also verified the validity of this method using the traditional spherical mirror and thin-lens Gaussian equations.

Visualizing the logistic map with a microcontroller
Abstract: The logistic map is one of the simplest nonlinear dynamical systems that clearly exhibit the route to chaos. In this paper, we explored the evolution of the logistic map using an open-source microcontroller connected to an array of light emitting diodes (LEDs). We divided the one-dimensional interval $[0,1]$ into ten equal parts, and associated and LED to each segment. Every time an iteration took… ▽ More

Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics of a two-level atom with modulated fields
Abstract: We studied the interaction of a two-level atom with a frequency modulated cavity mode in an ideal optical cavity. The system, described by a Jaynes-Cumming Hamiltonian, gave rise to a set of stiff nonlinear first order equations solved numerically using implicit and semi-implicit numerical algorithms. We explored the evolution of the atomic system using nonlinear dynamics tools, like time series,… ▽ More

Demonstration of double EIT using coupled harmonic oscillators and RLC circuits
Abstract: Single and double electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a medium, consisting of four-level atoms in the inverted-Y configuration, are discussed using mechanical and electrical analogies. A three coupled spring-mass system subject to dam** and driven by an external force is used to represent the four-level atom mechanically. The equations of motion of this system are solved analytical… ▽ More

Studying springs in series using a single spring
Abstract: Springs are used for a wide range of applications in physics and engineering. Possibly, one of its most common uses is to study the nature of restoring forces in oscillatory systems. While experiments that verify the Hooke's law using springs are abundant in the physics literature, those that explore the combination of several springs together are very rare. In this paper, an experiment designed t… ▽ More

Finding the Center of Mass of a Soft Spring
Abstract: This article shows how to use calculus to find the center of mass position of a soft cylindrical helical spring that is suspended vertically. The spring is non-uniformly stretched by the action of gravity. A general expression for the vertical position of the center of mass is obtained.

Coherent Manipulation of Multilevel Atoms for Quantum Information Processing
Abstract: In quantum information processing, quantum cavities play an important role by providing the mechanisms to transfer information between atom qubits and photon qubits, or to couple single atoms with the optical modes of the cavity field. We explore numerically the population transfer in an atom + cavity system by using the $π$-pulse and adiabatic passage methods. While the first method is very effic… ▽ More

Higher Landau levels contribution to the energy of interacting electrons in a quantum dot
Abstract: Properly regularized second-order degenerate perturbation theory is applied to compute the contribution of higher Landau levels to the low-energy spectrum of interacting electrons in a disk-shaped quantum dot. At ``filling factor'' near 1/2, this contribution proves to be larger than energy differences between states with different spin polarizations. After checking convergence of the method in… ▽ More
