T Pyx is one of the most enigmatic recurrent novae, and it has been proposed as a potential Galactic type-Ia supernova progenitor. Using spatially-resolved data obtained with MUSE, we characterized the geometrical distribution of the material expelled in previous outbursts surrounding the white dwarf progenitor. We used a 3D model for the ejecta to determine the geometric distribution of the extended remnant. We have also calculated the nebular parallax distance ($d = 3.55 \pm 0.77$ kpc) based on the measured velocity and spatial shift of the 2011 bipolar ejecta. These findings confirm previous results, including data from the GAIA mission. The remnant of T Pyx can be described by a two-component model, consisting of a tilted ring at $i = 63.7$ deg, relative to its normal vector and by fast bipolar ejecta perpendicular to the plane of the equatorial ring. We find an upper limit for the bipolar outflow ejected mass in 2011 of the bipolar outflow of $M_{ej,b} < (3.0 \pm 1.0) \times 10^{-6}$ M$_{\odot}$, which is lower than previous estimates given in the literature. However, only a detailed physical study of the equatorial component could provide an accurate estimate of the total ejecta of the last outburst, a fundamental step to understand if T Pyx will end its life as a type-Ia supernova.

The recurrent nova RS Oph underwent a new outburst on August 8, 2021, reaching a visible brightness of V = 4.8 mag. Observations of the 2021 outburst made with the high resolution UVES spectrograph at the Kueyen-UT2 telescope of ESO-VLT in Paranal enabled detection of the possible presence of 7Be freshly made in the thermonuclear runaway reactions. The 7Be yields can be estimated in N(Be)/N(H) = 5.7 x 10^(-6), which are close to the lowest yields measured in classical novae so far. 7Be is short-lived and decays only into 7Li. By means of a spectrum taken during the nebular phase we estimated an ejected mass of about 1.1 x 10^(-5) Msun, providing an amount of about 4.4x 10^(-10) Msun of 7Li created in the 2021 event. Recurrent novae of the kind of RS Oph may synthesize slightly lower amount of 7Li per event as classical novae, but occur 10^3 times more frequently. The recurrent novae fraction is in the range of 10-30% and they could have contributed to the making of 7Li we observe today. The detection of 7Be in RS Oph provides further support to the recent suggestion that novae are the most effective source of 7Li in the Galaxy.

We analyse high resolution spectra of two classical novae that exploded in the Small Magellanic Cloud. $^7$Be II resonance transitions are detected in both ASASSN-19qv and ASASSN-20ni novae. This is the first detection outside the Galaxy and confirms that thermo-nuclear runaway reactions, leading to the $^7$Be formation, are effective also in the low metallicity regime, characteristic of the SMC. Derived yields are of N($^7$Be=$^7$Li)/N(H) = (5.3 $\pm$ 0.2) $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ which are a factor 4 lower than the typical values of the Galaxy. Inspection of two historical novae in the Large Magellanic Cloud observed with IUE in 1991 and 1992 showed also the possible presence of $^7$Be and similar yields. For an ejecta of $M_{H,ej} =$ 10$^{-5}$ M$_{\odot}$, the amount of $^7$Li produced is of $M_{^7 Li} = (3.7 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-10}$ M$_{\odot}$ per nova event. Detailed chemical evolutionary model for the SMC shows that novae could have made an amount of lithium in the SMC corresponding to a fractional abundance of A(Li) $\approx$ 2.6. Therefore, it is argued that a comparison with the abundance of Li in the SMC, as measured by its interstellar medium, could effectively constrain the amount of the initial abundance of primordial Li, which is currently controversial.

We report on the spectral confirmation of 18 QSO candidates from the "QUasars as BRIght beacons for Cosmology in the Southern hemisphere'' survey (QUBRICS), previously observed in the optical band, for which we acquired new spectroscopic data in the near-infrared band with the Folded-port InfraRed Echellette spectrograph (FIRE) at the Magellan Baade telescope. In most cases, further observations were prompted by the peculiar nature of the targets, whose optical spectra displayed unexpected absorption features. All candidates have been confirmed as bona fide QSOs, with average emission redshift $z\simeq 2.1$. The analysis of the emission and absorption features in the spectra, performed with Astrocook and QSFit, reveals that the large majority of these objects are broad-absorption line (BAL) QSOs, with almost half of them displaying strong Fe II absorption (typical of the so-called FeLoBAL QSOs). The detection of such a large fraction of rare objects (which are estimated to account for less than one percent of the general QSO population) is interpreted as an unexpected (yet favourable) consequence of the particular candidate selection procedure adopted within the QUBRICS survey. The measured properties of FeLoBAL QSOs observed so far provide no evidence that they are a manifestation of a particular stage in AGN evolution. In this paper we present an explorative analysis of the individual QSOs, to serve as a basis for a further, more detailed investigation.

We report the search for 7Be isotope in the outbursts of the classical nova V6595 Sgr by means of high resolution UVES observations taken at the ESO VLT in April 2021, about two weeks after discovery and under difficult circumstances due to the pandemic. Narrow absorption components with velocities at about -2620 and -2820 km/s, superposed on broader and shallow absorption, are observed in the outburst spectra for the 7BeII 313.0583, 313.1228 nm doublet resonance lines, as well as in several other elements such as CaII, FeI, MgI, NaI, HI but LiI. Using CaII K line as a reference element, we infer N(7Be)/N(H) ~ 7.4 x 10^{-6}, or ~ 9.8 x 10^{-6} when the 7Be decay is taken into account. The 7Be abundance is about half of the value most frequently measured in novae. The possible presence of over-ionization in the layers where 7Be is detected is also discussed. Observations taken at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) in La Palma 91 days after discovery showed prominent emission lines of Oxygen and Neon which allow to classify the nova as ONe type. Therefore, although 7Be is expected to be higher in CO novae, it is found at comparable levels in both nova types.

The 7BeII 313.0583, 313.1228 nm doublet resonance lines are detected in the high velocity components of Nova Mus 2018 and ASASSN-18fv during outburst. On the other hand 7BeII is neither detected in ASASSN-17hx and possibly nor in Nova Cir 2018, therefore showing that the 7BeII is not always ejected in the thermonuclear runaway. Taking into account the 7Be decay we find X(7Be)/X(H) approx 1.5 x10 ^{-5} and 2.2 x 10 ^{-5} in Nova Mus 2018 and ASASSN-18fv, respectively. A value of 7Be/H about 2 x10 ^{-5} is found in 5 out of the 7 extant measurements and it might be considered as a typical 7Be yield for novae. However, this value is almost one order of magnitude larger than predicted by current theoretical models. We argue that the variety of high 7Be/H abundances could be originated in a higher than solar content of 3He in the donor star. The cases with 7Be not detected might be related to a small mass of the WD or to relatively little mixing with the core material of the WD. The 7Be /H, or 7Li/H, abundance is about 4 dex above meteoritic thus confirming the novae as the main sources of 7Li in the Milky Way.

{We combine the results of our earlier study of the UV characteristics of 18 classical novae (CNe) with data from the literature and with the recent precise distance determinations from the Gaia satellite to investigate the statistical properties of old novae. All final parameters for the sample include a detailed treatment of the errors and their propagation. The physical properties reported here include the absolute magnitudes at maximum and minimum, a new maximum magnitude versus rate of decline (MMRD) relation, and the inclination-corrected 1100--6000-Å accretion disk luminosity. Most importantly, these data have allowed us to derive a homogenous set of accretion rates in quiescence for the 18 novae.
All novae in the sample were super-Eddington during outburst, with an average absolute magnitude at maximum of $-7.5\pm1.0$. The average absolute magnitude at minimum corrected for inclination is $3.9\pm1.0$. The median mass accretion rate is $\log\dot{M}_{1M\odot}=-8.52$ (using $1M\odot$ as WD mass for all novae) or $\log\dot{M}_{M_{WD}}=-8.48$ (using the individual WD masses). These values are lower than those assumed in studies of CNe evolution and appear to attenuate the need for a hibernation hypothesis to interpret the nova phenomenon.
We identified a number of correlations among the physical parameters of the quiescent and eruptive phases, some already known but others new and even surprising. Several quantities correlate with the speed class $t_3$ including, unexpectedly, the mass accretion rate ($\dot{M)}$. This rate correlates also with the absolute magnitude at minimum corrected for inclination, and with the outburst amplitude, providing new and simple ways to estimate $\dot{M}$ through its functional dependence on (more) easily observed quantities. There is no correlation between $\dot{M}$ and the orbital period.}

High and low resolution $IUE$ spectra of V838 Her in the early outburst stages exhibit a strong absorption feature shortward of $λ$3130. We discuss the nature of this spectral feature and provide convincing evidence that it corresponds to the blue-shifted resonance doublet of singly-ionized $^7$Be, recently discovered in other novae. During the evolution of the outburst the appearance of an emission feature close to $λ$3130 is also identified as $^7$Be II $λ$3132 because the usual identification as the O III $λ$3133.7 Bowen fluorescence line is hardly compatible with both the known oxygen under-abundance in the nova ejecta and the low optical depths in the nebula due to the high outflow velocity. The average $^7$Be abundance relative to hydrogen, estimated by four different methods, i.e. the $^7$Be II / Mg II absorption ratio, and the $^7$Be II / Mg II, $^7$Be II / He II$_{1640}$, and $^7$Be II / H$β$ emission ratios is N(Be)/N(H) $\approx$ 2.5 $\times 10^{-5}$ (by number), i.e. $\approx$ 1.7 $\times 10^{-4}$ by mass. This corresponds to an overproduction of $^7$Be by about 1 dex in comparison with the theoretical models of massive CO and ONe novae. Since $^7$Be all converts into $^7$Li, the $^7$Be/H abundance implies a $^7$Li/H overabundance of about 4 dex over the $^7$/H meteoritic value and indicates a total ejected mass of $^7$Li of $\approx$ 9.5$\times$10$^{-10}$ $M_{\odot}$. These data are in line with previous observations and indicate that large amounts of $^7$Li can be synthesized in a variety of novae, including very fast ONe novae.

We investigated the nature and the origin of these instruments, in particular the spyglass depicted in a painting dated 1609-1612 that represents the most ancient reproduction of an early spyglass, and the two sophisticated spyglasses with draw tubes that are reproduced in two paintings, dated 1617-1618. We suggest that these two instruments may represent early examples of keplerian telescopes. Concerning the other scientific instruments, namely an astrolabe, an armillary sphere, a nocturnal, a proportional compass, surveying instruments, a Mordente's compass, a theodolite, etc., we point out that most of them may be associated with Michiel Coignet, cosmographer and instrument maker at the Court of the Archduke Albert VII of Hapsburg in Brussels.

An optical tube that appears in the Extensive Landscape with View of the Castle of Mariemont, dated 1608-1612, represents the first painting of a telescope whatsoever. We collected some documents showing that Albert VII obtained spyglasses very early directly from Lipperhey or Sacharias Janssen. Thus the painting likely reproduces one of the first man-made telescopes ever. Two other instruments appear in two Allegories of Sight made in the years 1617 and 1618. These are sophisticated instruments and the structure suggests that they may be keplerian, but this is about two decades ahead this mounting was in use.

This allowed the first direct estimate of the total mass accreted before outburst, M$_{accr}$=$\dot{M}_{pre-OB}$ $\cdot Δ$t, and its comparison with the critical ignition mass M$_{ign}$. We found M$_{accr}$ and M$_{ign}$ to be in perfect agreement (with a value close to 5 $\times$ 10$^{-7}$M$_{\odot}$) for M$_1$ $\sim$ 1.37 M$_{\odot}$, which provides a confirmation of the thermonuclear runaway theory. The comparison of the observed parameters of the eruption phase, with the corresponding values in the grid of models by Yaron and collaborators, provides satisfactory agreement for values of M$_1$ close to 1.35 M$_{\odot}$ and log$\dot{M}$ between -8.0 and -7.0, but the observed value of the decay time t$_3$ is higher than expected. The long duration of the optically thick phase during the recorded outbursts of T Pyx, a spectroscopic behavior typical of classical novae, and the persistence of P Cyg profiles, constrains the ejected mass M$_{ign}$ to within 10$^{-5}$ - 10$^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$. Therefore, T Pyx ejects far more material than it has accreted, and the mass of the white dwarf will not increase to the Chandrasekhar limit as generally believed in recurrent novae. A detailed study based on the UV data excludes the possibility that T Pyx belongs to the class of the supersoft X-ray sources, as has been postulated. XMM-NEWTON observations have revealed a weak, hard source and confirmed this interpretation.

A new measure of reddening (E$_{(B-V)}$$\sim$0.00) has been obtained from the comparison between the observed and the theoretical intensity decrement for 20 emission lines of the $\ion{He}{ii}$ Fowler (n$\to$3) series. This value has been confirmed by the STIS and IUE continuum distribution, and by the value of n$_H$ from the damped profile of the IS H Ly-$α$ line. We have obtained very accurate measurements for about thirty Bowen lines of $\ion{O}{iii}$ and a precise determination of the efficiency in the O1 and O3 excitation channels (18 % and 0.7 %, respectively). The relative $\ion{O}{iii}$ intensities are in good agreement with the predictions by Froese Fischer (1994). A detailed study of the decays from all levels involved in the Bowen mechanism has lead to the detection of two new $\ion{O}{iii}$ Bowen lines near $λ$ 2190. High resolution IUE data have shown a nearly linear decline with time, from 1978 to 1995, in the efficiency of the O1 and O3 processes, with a steeper slope for the O3 channel. A detailed study of the $\ion{N}{iii}$ $λ$ 4640 lines and of their excitation mechanism has shown that, recombination and continuum fluorescence being ruled out, line fluorescence remains the only viable mechanism to pump the 3d $^2D_{5/2}$ and 3d $^2D_{3/2}$ levels of $\ion{N}{iii}$. We point out the important role of multiple scattering in the resonance lines of $\ion{O}{iii}$ and $\ion{N}{iii}$ near $λ$ 374 and show that the observed $\ion{N}{iii}$ line ratios and intensities can be explained in terms of line fluorescence by the three resonance lines of $\ion{O}{iii}$ at $λ$$λ$ 374.432, 374.162 and 374.073 under optically thick conditions.

We have studied the UV spectral behavior of the recurrent nova T Pyx during 16 years of IUE observations. We examined both the IUE line-by-line images and the extracted spectra in order to understand the reality and the origin of the observed spectral variations. The UV continuum of T Pyx has remained nearly constant in slope and intensity over this time interval, without any indication of long-term trends. The reddening determined from the UV data is E(B-V}=0.25 \pm 0.02. The best single-curve fit to the dereddened UV continuum is a power-law distribution $\propto λ^{-2.33}$. The tail of this curve agrees well with the B, V, and J magnitudes of T Pyx, indicating that the contribution of the secondary star is negligible. One peculiar aspect of T Pyx is that most emission lines (the strongest ones being those of CIV 1550 and HeII 1640) show substantial changes both in intensity and detectability, in contrast to the near constancy of the continuum. Several individual spectra display emission features that are difficult to identify, suggesting a composite spectroscopic system. We tentatively ascribe the origin of these transient emission features either to loops and jets from the irradiated secondary or to moving knots of the surrounding nebula that are (temporarily) projected in front of the system. The inspection of all IUE line-by-line images has led to the detection of emission spikes outside the central strip of the spectrum, which in some cases seem associated to known emission features in the (main) spectrum. A comparison with other ex-novae reveals a surprising similarity to the spectrum of the very-slow nova HR Del, whose white dwarf primary has a mass that is allegedly about one half that of T Pyx.

This new UV study of the ex-nova HR Del is based on all of the data obtained with the IUE satellite, and includes the important series of spectra taken in 1988 and 1992 that have not been analyzed so far. After the correction for the reddening (EB-V)=0.16), adopting a distance d =850 pc, we have derived a mean UV luminosity close to Luv ~ 56 Lsun, the highest value among classical novae in "quiescence". Also the "average" optical absolute magnitude Mv=+2.30 is indicative of a bright object. The UV continuum luminosity, the HeII 1640 A emission line luminosity, and the optical absolute magnitude all give a mass accretion rate Mdot very close to 1.4*10**(-7) Msun/yr, if one assumes that the luminosity of the old nova is due to a non-irradiated accretion disk. The continuum distribution is well fitted with either a black body of 33,900 K, or a power-law F(lambda) ~ lambda**(-2.20). We show that the "quiescent" optical magnitude at mv ~ 12 comes from the hot component and not from the companion star. Since most IUE observations correspond to the "quiescent" magnitude at mv ~ 12, the same as in the pre-eruption stage, we infer that the pre-nova, for at least 70 years prior to eruption, was also very bright at near the same Luv, Mv, Mdot and T values as derived in the present study for the ex-nova. The wind components in the P Cyg profiles of the CIV 1550 A and NV 1240 A resonance lines are strong and variable on short timescales, with vedge up to -5000 km/s, a remarkably high value. The phenomenology in the short-time variations of the wind indicates the presence of an inhomogeneous outflow. We discuss the nature of the strong UV continuum and wind features and the implications of the presence of a "bright" state a long time before and after outburst on our present knowledge of the pre-nova and post-nova behavior.

UVES-VLT Observations of the OIII Bowen Lines in RR Tel
Authors:

Abstract:
The exceptional resolution of UVES has allowed the detection of weak spectral features and the separation of components in blended lines. The intensities of all of the OIII fluorescence lines produced by the O1, O3 and other channels, including the 5592 Angstrom charge-exchange line, have been measured and their ratios compared with models.

We present here the first results of UVES observations of RR Tel. The exceptional performances of the instrument have allowed the detection of new spectral features and have led to an improvement in the identifications of several emission lines. A direct comparison with the IUE observations in the range 3045-3300 A has revealed the appearance of many weak and shallow lines, most of them lacking a convincing identification. The Balmer lines are visible up to H38 and are accompanied by the He II lines of the Pickering series. Also, all of the He II emissions of the Pfund series, from 5858 A to 6408 A have been detected. We made definite identifications of additional TiO bands at 4955 A (alpha R_2 1-0), 5167 A (alpha R_2 0-0), 5445 A (alpha R_2 0-1), 5598 A (beta R_1 0-0), 5847 A (gamma 'R_1 1-0), and 6148 A (gamma ' {^S} R_21 0-0). The Halpha line has very wide wings, extending to at least 5000 km/s, which are similar to those reported for the planetary nebula IC 4997 and attributed to Raman scattering by Ly beta photons. A selective pum** mechanism via the HeII 237 A emission is proposed to explain the intensity of the high-lying lines of O IV mult. 1 and 2.

Abstract:
We report on photometric observations of V 1493 Aql during the early decline and highlight some uncommon aspects of the light curve. V 1493 Aql was hotter at maximum light than in the following phases, and was characterized by the presence of a long lasting secondary maximum, that, unlike in other novae, was quite red in color. The mean of three distance estimates yields d ~ 18.8 +/- 3.6 Kpc. Su…

Abstract:
The spectroscopic and photometric evolution of the 1999 outburst of the eclipsing and recurrent nova U Sco is presented. The photometric evolution closely matches that of the previous events. The FWZI=10,000 km/sec for emission lines at maximum has decreased to 4000 km/sec by day +23, with continuous and dramatic changes in the line profiles. No nebular line has become visible and the ionization degree has increased during the brightness decline. A not previously reported and quite puzzling splitting of the emission lines into three components after the first two weeks is outstanding in our spectra. The radiated luminosity is found to be a tiny fraction of that of classical novae for any reasonable distance to U Sco.
