Filamentation of high-power femtosecond laser pulses in air is accompanied by a fairly strong release of optical energy into the propagation medium due to laser-induced ionization of air molecules and production of an underdense plasma of charged species. We present the results of our laboratory experiments and numerical simulations aimed to the estimation of energy deposition amount by laser filament upon propagation in air depending on the conditions of spatial focusing, pulse energy, and radiation wavelength. For the first time to our knowledge, our study reveals a more than 50% decrease in the filament energy deposited in air in the range of moderate numerical aperture values, approximately from 0.003 to 0.007, at the carrier wavelengths of 740 nm and 470 nm. We attribute such a considerable reduction in the laser pulse energy release for femtosecond plasma to the competing effects of Kerr self-focusing and geometric divergence of focused laser pulse.

Propagation of a tightly focused high-power ultrashort laser pulse in an optical medium is usually substantially influenced by the medium optical nonlinearity that can noticeably affect the laser pulse parameters around the nonlinear focus and lead to unavoidable and often undesirable spatial distortions of the focal waist. We present the results of our experimental study and numerical simulations on a femtosecond Ti-Sapphire laser pulse propagation in air under different spatial focusing. We concentrated our study on spectral-angular and spatial pulse transformations under different focusing regimes, from linear to nonlinear one, when pulse filamentation occurs. For the first time to the best of our knowledge, we found the laser pulse numerical apertures range, namely, from NA=0.002 to 0.005 (for laser pulse energy of 1 mJ), where the laser pulse distortions both in frequency-angular spectrum and pulse spatial shape are minimal. By means of the numerical simulations, we found the threshold pulse energy and peak power in a wide range of focusing conditions, within which a transition between the linear and strongly nonlinear laser pulse focusing in air takes place. This energy limit is shown to decrease with pulse numerical aperture enhancement. Our findings identify the laser pulse numerical apertures and energy adequate for getting a maximum laser intensity with a good beam quality around the focal point suitable for various laser micropatterning and micromachining technologies.

It was shown that the saturation increases for the detectors based on finer films with a lower value of Rs300/Rs20. The decreasing of Rs300/Rs20 related to increasing influence of quantum corrections to conductivity of superconductors and, in its turn, to decreasing electron diffusion coefficient. An influence of multi-line CO laser focusing on spectral characteristics of broadband sum-frequency generation in ZnGeP2 nonlinear crystal was experimentally and numerically studied. Maximal frequency conversion was experimentally observed under tight focusing of the multi-line rather than single-line CO laser. The tight focusing resulted in broadening sum-frequency generation spectrum and increasing total, i.e. integrated over the spectrum, frequency conversion efficiency. These effects were due to increasing phase-matching bandwidth and angular dispersion. Maximal conversion efficiency of the multi-line CO laser was numerically demonstrated to take place at the focal length of 0.4 times that for the single-line one.

We have developed the deposition technology of WSi thin films 4 to 9 nm thick with high temperature values of superconducting transition (Tc~4 K). Based on deposed films there were produced nanostructures with indicative planar sizes ~100 nm, and the research revealed that even on nanoscale the films possess of high critical temperature values of the superconducting transition (Tc~3.3-3.7K ) which certifies high quality and homogeneity of the films created. The first experiments on creating superconducting single-photon detectors showed that the detectors SDE (system detection efficiency) with increasing bias current (Ib) reaches a constant value of ~30% (for 1550 nm) defined by infrared radiation absorption by the superconducting structure. To enhance radiation absorption by the superconductor there were created detectors with cavity structures which demonstrated a practically constant value of quantum efficiency >65% for bias currents Ib>=0.6Ic. The minimal dark counts level (DC) made 1 s^-1 limited with background noise. Hence WSi is the most promising material for creating single-photon detectors with record SDE/DC ratio and noise equivalent power (NEP).

We fabricated superconducting single photon detectors based on NbN thin films with a meander-like sensitive region of area from 2x2um2 to 11x11um2. The effect is connected with the dependence of the detector resistance, which appears after photon absorption, on its kinetic inductance and hence on detector length. This conclusion is confirmed by our calculations in the framework of the two-temperature model.

A variant of continuous nonequilibrium thermodynamic theory based on the postulate of the scale invariance of the local relation between generalized fluxes and forces has been proposed. This single postulate replaces the assumptions on local equilibrium and on the known relation between thermodynamic fluxes and forces, which are widely used in classical nonequilibrium thermodynamics. It has been shown that such a modification not only makes it possible to deductively obtain the main results of classical linear nonequilibrium thermodynamics, but also provides a number of statements for a nonlinear case (maximum entropy production principle, macroscopic reversibility principle, and generalized reciprocity relations) that are under discussion in the literature.

Filamentation of linear polarized ultrashort laser pulses in non-axisymmetric optical schemes with preferential directions to the optical axis in dependence on the beam orientation was experimentally studied. Our experiments demonstrated strong influence of a laser beam orientation on self-focusing of the beam and plasma generation during filamentation. Maximum of linear plasma density generated by an astigmatic laser pulse was different in both meridional and sagittal foci and depended on the beam orientation. A difference of linear plasma density was observed in the case of superposition of two parts of the laser beam going through a two-hole diaphragm depending on the beam orientation and through a slit for collinear and normal slit orientation relative to the beam orientation. Laser pulses in IR and UV wavelength domains led to similar result.

The supporting numerical electrodynamic modeling indicates that the electron emission is increased not owing to a larger effective aluminum surface, but due to instant local electromagnetic field enhancement near the nanoantenna, contributed by both the tip's lightning rod effect and the focusing effect of the pit as a microreflector and annular edge as a plasmonic lens.

We consider relaxation of an isolated system to the equilibrium using detailed balance condition and Onsager's fluctuation approximation. There is a small deviation from the equilibrium in two parameters. For this system, explicit expressions both for the dependence of trajectory entropy on random thermodynamic fluxes and for the dependence of entropy production on the most probable thermodynamic fluxes are obtained. Onsager's linear relations are obtained for the considered model using two methods (maximization of trajectory entropy and Ziegler's maximization of entropy production). Two existing interpretations of the maximum entropy production principle - as a physical principle and as an effective inference procedure - are discussed in the paper.

In this paper it is shown that a measurement of the relative luminosity changes at the LHC may be obtained by analysing the currents drawn from the high voltage power supplies of the electromagnetic section of the forward calorimeter of the ATLAS detector. The method was verified with a reproduction of a small section of the ATLAS forward calorimeter using proton beams of known beam energies and variable intensities at the U-70 accelerator at IHEP in Protvino, Russia. The experimental setup and the data taking during a test beam run in April 2008 are described in detail. A comparison of the measured high voltage currents with reference measurements from beam intensity monitors shows a linear dependence on the beam intensity. The non-linearities are measured to be less than 0.5 % combining statistical and systematic uncertainties.

We present a new photon number resolving detector (PNR), the Parallel Nanowire Detector (PND), which uses spatial multiplexing on a subwavelength scale to provide a single electrical output proportional to the photon number. The basic structure of the PND is the parallel connection of several NbN superconducting nanowires (100 nm-wide, few nm-thick), folded in a meander pattern. Electrical and optical equivalents of the device were developed in order to gain insight on its working principle. PNDs were fabricated on 3-4 nm thick NbN films grown on sapphire (substrate temperature TS=900C) or MgO (TS=400C) substrates by reactive magnetron sputtering in an Ar/N2 gas mixture. The device performance was characterized in terms of speed and sensitivity. The photoresponse shows a full width at half maximum (FWHM) as low as 660ps. PNDs showed counting performance at 80 MHz repetition rate. Building the histograms of the photoresponse peak, no multiplication noise buildup is observable and a one photon quantum efficiency can be estimated to be QE=3% (at 700 nm wavelength and 4.2 K temperature). The PND significantly outperforms existing PNR detectors in terms of simplicity, sensitivity, speed, and multiplication noise.

The optical-to-electrical conversion, which is the basis of optical detectors, can be linear or nonlinear. When high sensitivities are needed single-photon detectors (SPDs) are used, which operate in a strongly nonlinear mode, their response being independent of the photon number. Nevertheless, photon-number resolving (PNR) detectors are needed, particularly in quantum optics, where n-photon states are routinely produced. In quantum communication, the PNR functionality is key to many protocols for establishing, swap** and measuring entanglement, and can be used to detect photon-number-splitting attacks. A linear detector with single-photon sensitivity can also be used for measuring a temporal waveform at extremely low light levels, e.g. in long-distance optical communications, fluorescence spectroscopy, optical time-domain reflectometry. We demonstrate here a PNR detector based on parallel superconducting nanowires and capable of counting up to 4 photons at telecommunication wavelengths, with ultralow dark count rate and high counting frequency.

Abstract:
The beam diagnostic system of U-70 beam transfer lines (beam profiles, intensity and beam losses measurements) was designed in the beginning of 80-th on the base of 8-bit microprocessor, SUMMA hardware and home made serial communication link. Because of the maintenance problems the decision was taken to upgrade the hardware and software parts of the system.

Abstract:
Stability of cylindrical and spherical crystals growing from a supersaturated solution (in Mullins-Sekerka's approximation) is considered using the maximum entropy production principle. The concept of the binodal of the nonequilibrium (morphological) phase transition is introduced for interpretation of the obtained results. The limits of the metastable regions are determined. The morphological p…

The morphological phase diagrams of stable-unstable growth in the plane (surface energy, supersaturation) are given.
