X-ray powder diffraction and electrical resistivity measurements were performed on the tetragonal compound CeCoSi under pressure to elucidate the phase boundary of the pressure-induced structural transition and the change in the 4$f$ electronic state. The temperature-pressure phase diagram has been determined from the shift of the Bragg peaks and from the anomaly in the resistivity. The critical pressure, $P_{\rm s}$ $\sim$ 4.9 GPa at 300 K, decreases to $P_{\rm s}$ $\sim$ 3.6 GPa at 10 K. The decrease of $P_{\rm s}$ is due not only to the decrease in volume of the unit cell but also to an anisotropic shrinkage by cooling. When crossing the boundary to the high-pressure phase, the resistivity shows a significant drop to exhibit a metallic temperature dependence. The results of this study strongly suggest that the structural phase transition can be ascribed to valence instability of Ce-$4f$ electron.

Filled skutterudite compound EuFe$_4$As$_{12}$ shows the highest magnetic ordering temperature of $T_{\rm C}$ = 154 K among Eu-based skutterudite compounds, but its magnetic ground state has not been determined yet. Here, we performed $^{153}$Eu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and $^{75}$As nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on EuFe$_4$As$_{12}$ to reveal its magnetic ground state as well as the physical properties from a microscopic point of view. From the temperature and magnetic field dependence of $^{153}$Eu NMR spectrum in the magnetically ordered state, we found that the Eu ions are in Eu$^{2+}$ state with a nearly 7 $μ_{\rm B}$ corresponding to $S$ = 7/2 spins. Combined with the magnetization measurements which show the reduced saturation moments of 4.5 $μ_{\rm B}$/f.u., we determined the ground magnetic structure in EuFe$_4$As$_{12}$ to be ferrimagnetic where the Eu$^{2+}$ 4$f$ and the Fe 3$d$ ordered moments are ferromagnetically aligned in each sublattice but the moments between the sublattices are antiferromagnetically aligned. We also found the local distortion at the Eu site from the cubic symmetry in the magnetically ordered state. The relationship between the rattling motion of Eu atoms and the local symmetry of the Eu ions is discussed. From the $^{75}$As NQR nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time measurements as well as $^{153}$Eu NMR measurements, we found that the 4$f$ electrons of the Eu ions are well described by the local moment picture in both the magnetic and paramagnetic metallic states.

Motivated by the recent observation of ferromagnetic spin correlations in the filled skutterudite SrFe$_4$As$_{12}$ [Ding et al., Phys. Rev. Knight shift $K$ determined by the NQR spectrum under a small magnetic field ($\le$ 0.5 T) is nearly independent of temperature, consistent with the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature, 1/$T_1T$, is nearly independent of temperature above $\sim$ 50 K and increases slightly with decreasing temperature below the temperature. The temperature dependence is reasonably explained by a simple model where a flat band structure with a small ledge near the Fermi energy is assumed. By comparing the present NMR data with those in SrFe$_4$As$_{12}$, we found that the values of $|K|$ and $1/T_1T$ in SrOs$_4$As$_{12}$ are smaller than those in SrFe$_4$As$_{12}$, indicating no obvious ferromagnetic spin correlations in SrOs$_4$As$_{12}$. From the temperature dependence of 1/$T_1$ in the superconducting state, an $s$-wave superconductivity is realized.

$^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements have been carried out to investigate the magnetic and electronic properties of the filled skutterudite metallic compound SrFe$_4$As$_{12}$. The temperature dependence of Knight shift $K$ determined by the NQR spectrum under a small magnetic field ($\le$ 0.5 T) shows the similar temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility $χ$ which exhibits a broad maximum at $T^\ast$ $\sim$ 50 K. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature, 1/$T_1T$, increases with decreasing temperature and exhibits a broad maximum at $T$ $\sim$ 70 K, similar to the case of $χ$. The temperature dependence of $K$ and $1/T_1T$ is reasonably explained by a simple model where we assume a concave-shaped band structure near the Fermi energy. Based on a Korringa ratio analysis using the $T_1$ and $K$ data, ferromagnetic spin fluctuations are found to exist in SrFe$_4$As$_{12}$. These results indicate that SrFe$_4$As$_{12}$ can be characterized to be a metal with ferromagnetic correlations and also the peculiar band structure responsible for the suppression of $1/T_1T$ and $K$ at low temperatures.

The energy gap in s(w) at ambient pressure, caused by a metal-insulator transition due to an unconventional charge-density-wave formation at 63 K, is gradually filled in with increasing pressure to 10 GPa. At 14 GPa and below 30 K, s(w) exhibits a pronounced Drude-type component due to free carriers. This indicates that the initial insulating ground state at zero pressure has been turned into a metallic one at 14 GPa. This is consistent with a previous resistivity study under pressure, where the resistivity rapidly decreased with cooling below 30 K at 14 GPa. The evolution of electronic structure with pressure is discussed in terms of the hybridization between the 4f and conduction electrons.

Assuming the Arrhenius law in the temperature range 0.5-1 K, we obtained an energy barrier of 9 K. Below 0.5 K, both $τ_{\rm S}$ and $τ_{\rm L}$ show a clear deviation from the thermal activated dynamics toward temperature independent relaxation, suggesting a quantum dynamics.

The temperature dependences of the upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$ and the Ginzburg-Landau (Maki) parameter $κ_2$ suggest an s-wave clean-limit superconductivity. The electronic specific heat coefficient $γ\sim 95$ mJ/K$^2$mol, being $\sim 1.5$ times larger than that for \lra, indicates $4f$-originating quasiparticle mass enhancement. Magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ indicates that the CEF ground state is a $Γ_1$ singlet and a $Γ_4^{(1)}$ triplet first excited state lies at $Δ_{\rm CEF}\sim 30$ K above. Systematic comparison among \pos, \prs, \pra and La-based reference compounds suggests that inelastic exchange- and aspherical-charge-scatterings of conduction electrons from CEF-split $4f$ levels play an essential role for the quasiparticle mass enhancement and the value of $T_{\rm c}$ in the Pr-based filled skutterudites.

The 31P-NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) and muSR (muon spin relaxation) measurements on the filled skutterudite system SmFe4P12 have been carried out. The temperature T dependence of the 31P-NMR spectra indicates the existence of the crystalline electric field effect splitting of the Sm3+$ (J = 5/2) multiplet into a ground state and an excited state of about 70 K. The spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 shows the typical behavior of the Kondo system, i.e., 1/T1 is nearly T independent above 30 K, and varies in proportion to T (the Korringa behavior, 1/T1 \propto T) between 7.5 K and 30 K. The T dependence deviated from the Korringa behavior below 7 K, which is independent of T in the applied magnetic field of 1 kOe, and suppressed strongly in higher fields. The behavior is explained as 1/T1is determined by ferromagnetic fluctuations of the uncovered Sm3+ magnetic moments by conduction electrons. The muSR measurements in zero field show the appearance of a static internal field associated with the ferromagnetic order below 1.6 K.

The 31P-NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) measurements of the filled skutterudite SmRu4P12 have been carried out in several applied magnetic fields. The line width of the 31P-NMR spectrum rapidly increases below the metal-insulator transition temperature TMI, which indicates the appearance of an internal field below the temperature. Though no distinct anomaly was observed below TMI in low fields, a complicated structure was observed between the Neel temperature TN and TMI (TN < TMI) above 70 kOe. The spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 is almost independent of temperature above TMI, and rapidly decreases below TMI. The 1/T1 in low fields decreases monotonously, whereas the strong suppression of 1/T1 occurs between TN and TMI above 70 kOe. The structure of the spectra and the suppression of 1/T1 become apparent with increasing field.

The filled skutterudite compound SmRu_4P_{12} undergoes a complex evolution from a paramagnetic metal (phase I) to a probable multipolar ordering insulator (phase II) at T_{MI} = 16.5 K, then to a magnetically ordered phase (phase III) at T_{N} = 14 K. Elastic properties under hydrostatic pressures were investigated to study the nature of the ordering phases. We found that distinct elastic softening above T_{MI} is induced by pressure, giving evidence of quadrupole degeneracy of the ground state in the crystalline electric field. It also suggests that quadrupole moment may be one of the order parameters below T_{MI} under pressure. Strangely, the largest degree of softening is found in the transverse elastic constant C_{T} at around 0.5-0.6 GPa, presumably having relevancy to the competing and very different Gruneisen parameters Ωof T_{MI} and T_{N}. Interplay between the two phase transitions is also verified by the rapid increase of T_{MI} under pressure with a considerably large Ωof 9. Our results can be understood on the basis of the proposed octupole scenario for SmRu_4P_{12}.

The pressure-temperature phase diagram of the heavy-electron superconductor URu2Si2 has been reinvestigated by ac-susceptibility and elastic neutron-scattering (NS) measurements performed on a small single-crystalline rod (2 mm in diameter, 6 mm in length) in a Cu-Be clamp-type high-pressure cell (P < 1.1 GPa). At ambient pressure, this sample shows the weakest antiferromagnetic (AF) Bragg reflections reported so far, corresponding to the volume-averaged staggered moment of mord ~ 0.011 mB/U. Under applied pressure, the AF scattering intensity exhibits a sharp increase at P ~ 0.7 GPa at low temperatures. The saturation value of the AF scattering intensity above 0.7 GPa corresponds to mord ~ 0.41 mB/U, which is in good agreement with that (~ 0.39 mB/U) observed above 1.5 GPa in our previous NS measurements. The superconductivity is dramatically suppressed by the evolution of AF phase, indicating that the superconducting state coexists only with the hidden order phase. The presence of parasitic ferro- and/or antiferromagnetic phases with transition temperatures T1star =120(5) K, T2star = 36(3) K and T3star = 16.5(5) K and their relationship to the low-T ordered phases are also discussed.

It is found that the ordering is associated with the onset of a low temperature insulator phase. These conclusions are supported by the facts that the space group of the crystal structure transforms from Im$\bar{3}$ to Pm$\bar{3}$ below the M-I transition temperature and also that the temperature dependence of the superlattice peaks in the insulator phase follows the squared BCS function. The M-I transition could be originated from the perfect nesting of the Fermi surface and/or the instability of the $f$ electrons.

The band gap of CeRu4P12 seems to be formed by strong hybridization of 4f electrons. Pr-L2 XANES spectra indicate that Pr exists in trivalent state over a wide range in temperature, 20 < T < 300 K. We find that the metal-insulator (MI) transition at TMI = 60 K in PrRu4P12 does not originate from Pr valence fluctuation.
